« Third Team In Peavy Deal: Orioles? | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Dunn, Wood, Sheets »
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the Royals signed catcher J.R. House to a split contract. House, 29, hit .306/.378/.480 in 454 Triple A at-bats this year. Back in the day, House was considered the Pirates' top prospect before he was derailed by injuries. There was a time when Jason Kendall was expected to move to the outfield to accomodate him.

"There was a time when Jason Kendall was expected to move to the outfield to accomodate him."
Vintage Littlefield.
In all seriousness though, solid signing for the Royals. He'll probably stick as a backup catcher, and the catching market is horrid.

Signing Hernandez and House? Looks like O's AAA a few years ago. Any chance they pick up Jon Knott too?

As a royals dude, I remember the days when the royals made these type of signings and I was worried because, well, these dudes might actually being playing on April 1st, because they were the most talented in the organization and alot would hang on them.
Now I love these signings because they are low risk, if they pay out great type of signings.
It seems there is little appreciation for how much depth has been added to the Royals during the Moore era.

I also should say that the sentence, "there was once a time when [the pirates] expected Jason Kendall moving to the outfield to accomodate him" is the equivilant to "once upon a time".

JR House isn't much of a catcher anymore. He's a decent 1b option with a little time at 3b. The Astros have been content with the likes of Brad Ausmus, Humberto Quintero, JR Towles and Eric Munson the past few years. If House could adequately play the catcher position, he would have easily had a major league job by now.

Agree with basicslop. The Royals are signing players not because they need them to start on Opening Day but to build depth and competition in the organization - something completely lacking in the last...15 to 20 years.
Last spring we signed Ramon Ramierez for a PTBNL and cash after he had a dismal season in 2007 and he gave us a career year. For that the Royals had a chip to bargain with and landed Crisp.
I don't think any Royals fan is viewing these signings as the greatest thing ever...but you never know. See - Mike Aviles.

i am continously confused how there are so many critics of these small organizational type moves that need to be made by teams.
not every team has all stars at every position from the minors on up; and rather often teams must make these types of signings to plug holes in the organization.
House offers the Royals a backup catcher as well as a backup 1B/DH and gives them minor league depth.
Not sure how a guy who offers them this small amount of organizational depth is a bad move; would they be better off with no one and play with 8 men instead?
Not sure about the Royals but....most organizations choose not to move a young guy with future potential along to quickly just to fill an organizational hole. If the Royals have any decent catchers in their system, they probably dont feel they are ready for AAA yet, so they prefer to sign House which will allow their internal kids to develop at the appropriate levels.
