Are the Rays really likely to spend 10 million on one player? I mean I know they are willing to spend more than they have been before, but still, they are a really small market, and 10 million to one player seems like it will be a good percentage of their payroll

could add mike macdougal to the last category. that was sure a great signing.

Um........Tim Hudson WILL have his option picked up! Bank on it!

Maybe it's just me, but do you really think it's that unlikely that Tim Hudson's option will be picked up? He's not going to pitch much this year, if at all, so I'm not sure how much better he can do on the open market. And for the Braves, while Hudson hasn't been quite the ace they hoped he'd be, that's a pretty affordable amount for a pitcher. I know he's going to be coming off of Tommy John's, but I still feel like both sides will have interest. At worst this seems like a "to be determined" option. Any thoughts?

Mora's won't be exercised.

I agree with Jay, I am positive the Braves will pick up Hudson's option, if not negotiate a contract extension with him over the '09 offseason. I guess it's possible Hudson would choose to be come a FA, but there's never been any indication that he wants to leave Atlanta at this stage of his career. I'd bet he's with the Braves for 2010 and a few years beyond.

Why wouldn't the Braves excerise the option for Tim Hudson at just 12MM? Plenty of pitchers have come back from TJ. They were about to spend a boatload for AJ Burnett who's a bigger flake and injury risk.

Put Mora there because I don't know the amount on the option or buyout...

As for Hudson...what I am trying to answer is whether that option will be exercised by both sides at that amount. If they renegotiate then it was correct to say the option would not be exercised.

I'd have to say Betancourt will bounce back this year and have that option picked up and Huddy will too. Doubt Ramon Hernandez has his picked up at 8.5M. I think Feliz would be a pretty good deal at that price, but who knows.

Here's the thing with mutual options...if the team feels the guy's worth it, he usually feels he can do better. If the team doesn't think he's worth it he usually figures the open market will feel the same.

Tim, I'm seeing Mora's option at 8M with a 1M buyout.

(not sure how reputable that website is)

Huddy's been a great value at his contract relative to other pitchers though. What he does in the 2nd half of '09 will determine whether his option is picked up or not. If he comes back after his surgery and dominates, his option is a near lock to get picked up.

Agreed on MacDougal. His option ain't getting picked up. Neither is Mora's.

Wait. So Adam Eaton's option is mutual. So, even if the Phillies declined his option, Eaton could exercise it and be in line for the 9MM from the Phillies?

I don't think Ryan Franklin's option gets picked up...at least I hope it doesn't.

Missed One

Noah Lowry of the San Francisco Giants has a $6.5M 2010 option that is unlikely to be picked up.

No both Eaton and Philly have to agree to the deal. Which won't happen.

"Wait. So Adam Eaton's option is mutual. So, even if the Phillies declined his option, Eaton could exercise it and be in line for the 9MM from the Phillies?"

The opposite, rather they would both have to agree to pick up the option for it to vest.

"The opposite, rather they would both have to agree to pick up the option for it to vest."

Aah. Thanks. The whole "mutual" thing just threw me off. Horrible at language.

I'd throw Wake in the 'likely' category.

Even though there is no chance of it happening, what if Cliff Lee hit the market? What kind of money would a possible fluke (who knows, right?) get?

I don't see Victor Martinez's option picked up at 7 million in 2010 unless Shoppach is traded. The Indians have less expensive 1B, DH and C options in Garko, LaPorta and Shoppach. Not to mention that Hafner is signed through 2013 and needs a place to play. All that is combined with catching prospects Wyatt Toregas, Carlos Santana and Chris Giminez.

$7 mil? Really? He'd get a lot more on the open market. Martinez is a bargain at that price. If he can go back to being a great hitter and not what he did in '08.

Hudson isn't expected back until the last month of the season isn't he? It's hard for me to believe he'll pitch so well during that one month that he'll be able to get a $12mil/year offer for 2010 from somebody else if he declines his option. Conversely, if he shows he's healthy, the Braves will certainly want him back at $12 mil for 2010.

Frank Catalanotto has a $5 million option for '10 with a $2 million buyout. The Rangers are unlikely to exercise his option.

"I don't see Victor Martinez's option picked up at 7 million in 2010 unless Shoppach is traded. The Indians have less expensive 1B, DH and C options in Garko, LaPorta and Shoppach. Then they'd pick up his option and then trade him. They'll be able to net decent return for a catcher.

No way Mets do not exercise Putz' option. What is likely is the Mets exercise the option and trade him to a team that needs a closer.

Put Putz in the "Likely" column

The Mets will exercise unless J.J.'s health is goes ker-Putz

Just because the Braves dont excercise Hudsons option doesnt mean he would leave. But coming off a major surjury he would likely resign for 6 million with incentives.

Mora is a coin flip. He's a good clubhouse guy, loyal to the O's, and lives in the area. However, if they don't have a slot for him (e.g., if they pick up Dunn on a multiyear deal and keep Huff around), he might be a decline, simply to allow him the option to play somewhere.

My suspicion is that he retires before the 2010 season, after the O's tell him he won't play more than a bit part. I wouldn't be totally shocked if they reupped him (or declined and re-signed him), either, though.

FYI -- I do think Mora is seriously overpaid at his current salary.

Ker-Putz ...good stuff

Surjery**..Wow, thats what happens when you type in a hurry.

I think Carl Crawford would be a great sign and trade as well, especially if the Rays feel he's too expensive to afford. They could get nore if they trade him sooner than later.

Where's option #4; "posititvely will not be exercised"? That's where Adam Eaton should be.........

I'd put Dye on the "To be determined", $12MM isn't bad if he continues what he's been doing, especially with Thome gone after 2009

"Are the Rays really likely to spend 10 million on one player? I mean I know they are willing to spend more than they have been before, but still, they are a really small market, and 10 million to one player seems like it will be a good percentage of their payroll"

Even a poor team like the Rays realize that Crawford is 1 of the best OF'ers in the biz. Unless he gets seriously hurt, there is -0- chance that option does not get picked up.

What kind of injury is Alex Gonzalez suffering from? Just looked and he missed all of 2008, not many better fielding SS's in the game and he's got some pop, just always seems like he is hurt.

Put Vizcaino in the unlikely column. Unless he has a big turnaround year, the Rockies will drop him faster than Matt Holliday. He's been too injured and ineffective with the Rockies this year, and most likely next year to be paid 4 million.

Thornton - not likely;
Putz - yes;
Hudson - yes

The Cards have too much depth in the farm at reliever to spend almost 3 mil on franklin. Its as good as a contract year for him. He'll follow Duncan and Tony right out the door...

Hudson most likely will be getting an extension like John Smoltz's old contract. Where its basically a good base salary and he could make 12-14m but its all incentive based really.

I really doubt hudson is going anywhere he and his wife are very active in the community and have talked about how much they love atlanta. if the braves dont try to bring him back i would be both pissed and surprised. to me he is like a better version of Derek Lowe. Basically someone who will be effective with their sinker until they retire

I really can't see the Braves NOT picking up Hudson's option, Tim.. any reason you think they won't??

ok I just read previous comments... nevermind

I'd love to see Carl Crawford in an Angels uni but the Rays will sign him to an extension. He'll retire as a Devil Rays/Rays and he'll be their TRUE only retired jersey. Cuz Boggs getting his jersey retired by Tampa was bs.

Can Magglio keep going on that knee? It's amazing he's able to run.

Write it down: Wakefield will be on the Red Sox 2009 roster.

Victor Martinez' option will be exercised, even before the season ends if he comes back at full strength from injury. No way they will give up that bat and leadership. Hafner has to prove a lot this year, as does Garko. And LaPorta is a LF for now.
As for the other Tribe players on the list, you are on target as well. Kobayashi has to prove he can pitch a whole season, and Betancourt is too pricey for his inconsistency.

Matt Thornton is a definite, even if he struggles this year, he's been fantastic the last 2 years.

I'd also put Dye in the likely to maybe section. If he comes close to last seasons numbers, it's a lock. Plus as someone said, Thome is gone after this year, I think Dye would then slide into the DH spot.

"Write it down: Wakefield will be on the Red Sox 2009 roster."

He already is... this is a post for 2010

If the Rays are in the market to sign a power bat such as Burrell or Dunn @ 12 million a year, don't you think they are going to pick up Crawford's option at 10MM next season...

Not only that, with their expanding payroll, I wouldn't be suprised to see them extended him passed that to a multiyear deal... They have a growing fan base and teams such as the Royals and Nationals should take note... This is how you compete with big markets such as the Yankees and Red Sox...

One more thing, Feliz had a down year with the bat and if he produces ( even a smidgen) more than he did last year, he'll be picked up for 2010 @ 5MM...
With his glove, he is a steal...
