Adam Dunn's First Choice: Cubs

According to David Kaplan of WGN Radio and Comcast SportsNet, Adam Dunn's first choice is to play for the Cubs. He's not looking for a huge deal, but a fair one.  The concern, of course, would be having Dunn play right field on a regular basis.

A source familiar with the team's thinking told MLBTR the Cubs have "exchanged pleasantries" with Dunn's agents, nothing more.  It's been suggested that Milton Bradley is the Cubs' first choice.

Please sign him, I would take his bat and bad defense over bradley's bat,bad defense, and broken down body.

What do you know about Adam Dunn? Do you know he doesn't even like baseball?

The lack of speculation on Dunn all offseason has really led me to believe JP was on to something that many front offices agree with.

Oh yeah, he doesnt like baseball. That is why he is just looking for a fair deal, not a huge one.

I hope something soon happens for the cubs so I don't have to keep on speculating what will become of right field

What about the lack of talk on Manny and Abreu? What about Sheets? These guys haven't had much said about them, I bet they also hate baseball. Also add Bradley, Burrell, Pedro, and Oliver Perez to that list. None of these guys have had much speculation this offseason, so the conclusion must be they don't like baseball. Great logic 92-93. Way to use your brain.

Bradley, Abreu, and Dunn all belong in the AL. Dunn probably will be the most productive offensively, but will be the biggest liability in right. I'm sure JH is looking at trade options to fill the gap in RF...maybe Hermida?

The Cubs could then have possibly the worst defensive outfield in the history of baseball with Soriano and Dunn in opposite corners.

dear god do i loathe the idea of milton as a cub, games played last 4 seasons, 75-96-61-115 and the last three was when he was in the AL where he could DH, dunn stays healthy and you're guaranteed 40hr, 100rbi and 100bb...i'll take the .250 avg with those numbers and a .380 obp

I want Dunn. Omar Minaya, get him!

I would take Dunn over anyone available mainly because of his age and health.

Also, playing for a contending team might peak his interest in baseball. If he can hit 40 homers and a high OBP he can hate baseball for all i care.

"What do you know about Adam Dunn? Do you know he doesn't even like baseball?"

That meme never gets old.

If Dunn goes to the Cubs, then its pretty much a given that Bradley goes to the Rays.

"The Cubs could then have possibly the worst defensive outfield in the history of baseball with Soriano and Dunn in opposite corners."

Not quite sure theyre the worst. Soriano makes the routine plays at least. Kosuke will be above average in CF which will take part of the burnen off of them. And their offense still makes them overall above average. Sorianos numbers last season were insane considering how much time he missed.

yes, the defense would be horrendous. but, come on. this is a guaranteed source of pop in the lineup. that way everybody can shut up about sori batting leadoff.

soriano
theriot
ramirez
dunn
lee
derosa
soto
reed/kosuke

what's wrong with that? you wouldn't trade that offense for some really bad outfield d? if it's such a liability, late in games you can put kosuke in right, gathright in center, and pull dunn.

Gathright isnt a good defender so why would you put him in over reed johnson??

dunn would hit 30+ homers in wrigley alone. would be great sign for cubbies

With Soriano, Lee, and A-Ram I don't think the cubs should be worrying about offense at the expense of defense unless they want to move one of those three. Whether Dunn likes or hates baseball there's just no getting around that he can barely play first base defensively, so he's just not a good fit fort he cubs.

The cubs are one of the few teams so stacked (offensively) they can trade for Cameron, or take a gamble on Andruw. Could also probably take on Brian Giles who's decent offensively but still can kinda play a corner.

None of the free agent outfielders except for a Milton Bradley that doesn't get hurt really fits the cubs needs.

just one dumb non-cubs fan opinion.

I think Abreu would be a more attractive fit than Bradley (poor defense, can't stay healthy) or Dunn (too many strikeouts, horrible defense). Abreu's defense isn't great but it's at least passes for avg.

I like the idea of Adam Dunn, he makes the routine plays and has a decent arm. He just isn't very fast in the outfield which makes him look awful at D. Yes he strikes out a lot, but his homeruns will far outweigh them. Plus, he can strikeout a ton because as long as he delivers with a big knock or two during the game, we'll have the runners in front for his rbis to stay consistent. He really hasn't played in an excellent lineup likes the Cubs in his whole career. He wouldn't have to be the entire offense like he was for so long in cinci and for those couple months in 'zona.

Why does everyone think that Bradley plays bad defense? He is actually very good and can play all three outfield spots when healthy(I know what I said)

Brian Giles is really the ultimate peice for the Cubs. His numbers are still very good and he plays in pitcher-freindly Petco. He is a very good defender(which would help immensely at Wrigley) and he has a solid bat that they could put in the heart of the order to break up the rightys or they could lead him off if they really wanted to get Soriano out of there. Just my thoughts......

Didn't Dunn talk down about Wrigley Field's outfield near the end of 2007? After Griffey got hurt on a diving play? How ironic that the Cubs are his "first choice." Money and wins can sure change a man's heart overnight, can't they?

My top choice for the Cubs is Abreu, but the guy is 35 and his arm isn't what it used to be. Thankfully, he is a consistent hitter year in and year out. The Cubs don't need Bradley -- as if the injury worries with Soriano and others aren't enough. Let him DH for the Rays and be done with it.

If the Cubs need to pull off a trade or something, send Marquis/Pie packing with some salary coverage and bring in a mid-level player. Just get something done already.

Dunn's strikeouts are not a big concern. He can hit 40/100 every year and anchor a lineup. Being in Cincy for as long as he has, you have to think he'd relish in the idea of hitting around Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, and Soto among others. The 2009 Cubs would be the best lineup he's ever seen.

I guess at this point I'd be fine with either Abreu or Dunn. May the cheaper contract win.

Dunn has absolutely killed it at Wrigley. With the wind blowing out there he'd be full on insanity.

Definitely agree there needs to be a move on somebody. Don't think I agree with the 'stand pat because we won 97 games' philosophy. So what? You can still get better. It's not a team of invincible robots, so you can get better.

I used to hate the idea of Dunn, but now that the cubs havent done anything this offseason (gathright doesnt count) and peavy fell through, we need to do something. I would give up shaky defense for 40hr 100rbi

Dunn, yes, one thousand times, yes. I wouldn't mind Bradley, I hate the idea of another aging OF in Abreu. Hendry, make the move and make it fast.

i agree with garrett, they could probably get andruw for next to nothing if they take on the bulk of the contract, that said, it should be a last resort due to the possible, yet 'unlikely' aquisition of peavy

In my dream world, the O's obviously miss out on Texiera. McPhail still wants a slugger and agrees to trade Roberts and Huff for Soriano. Hendry pays some of Soriano's contract and signs Dunn for left field. With a lineup of Roberts, Theriot, Ramirez, Dunn, Lee, Soto, Fukudome/Johnson, Huff, they will have plenty of lefthanded pop. They even have room to trade DeRosa to Philly and work out that Peavy trade. But then I woke up.

Here's an idea:

Trade Fukudome to Seattle for Jarod Washburn.

An exchange of bodies for a better atmosphere for the players to rebound.

Trade Marquis and Pie to Texas for Milton Bradley (sign-and-trade) and Saltalamaccia.

Primarily a year of innings just to get Pie. Saltalamaccia has no future in Texas.

That moves several bodies around to clear space to sign Adam Dunn.

The bottom line is Bradley and Dunn for little extra payroll.

Dunn could move to first base once Lee's contract expires.

Somewhat complicated; however, the present market (free-agency) requires creativity (sign and trade deals) and movement of (bad) salaries of poor performing players to new scenery to create flexibilty.

1.Soriano
2.Theriot
3.Bradley
4.Dunn
5.Ramirez
6.Lee
7.Soto
8.DeRosa
9.Pitcher

That's line-up!

"Trade Marquis and Pie to Texas for Milton Bradley (sign-and-trade) and Saltalamaccia."

Uh. Why wouldn't the Cubs just sign Bradley in the first place? This isn't basketball. On top of that, you can't sign someone and trade them until I believe June. Sign and trade deals do not happen in baseball.

I love Dunn, mostly because he grew up close to my place and he is a good guy, but I hope he does not go to the Cubs. I would rather him go to the Yankees over the Cubs. But, he might be being persuaded to go there because he is working out with the Cubs 1st rounder this year, Andrew Cashner. I will see Cashner on Tuesday, so I might ask him what Dunn thinks and will send an email to Tim. I hope he doesn't say he wants to go there because I wasn't happy when Cashner fell to them

Geo that makes no sense at all. Why would Texas give up a young catcher for basically Pie and a big contract? Also why would we have both Dunn and Bradley when theres only one spot open? Bradley cant play CF, and youve traded away Fukudome and Pie already. And the money wouldnt work out at all. And the sign and trade also makes little sense.

Just a thought. Thanks for the remarks and for correcting me on sign and trade deals.

I'm a team builder and I really like the idea of Bradley (CF) and Dunn (RF) together; however, Fukudome (CF/RF) stands in the way of that possibilty.

I'd be happy to restructure the Texas trade to: Pie and Marquis plus cash for Saltalamacchia.

Texas needs innings and don't have a place to play Saltalamacchia. A package of Marquis and about $4 million in cash would help their pitching staff.

Texas needs pitching help and Saltalamacchia becomes a useful young C/1B/PH off the bench.

Texas may require additional young talent from the farm; however, the relatively small price for Maruis should help them pull the trigger on such a trade.

I could give a list of why Dunn to the Cubs isn't a good idea but I wont waste my time BECAUSE---after Texiera signs with the Red Sox and Manny signs with the Yankees or Dodgers, Leather Pants Bowden will swoop in and sign Dunn to a three year contract for more than ANY other team will be willing to offer him. Then the Angers will get a good deal on Bobby Abreu.

Bowden has made brash statements about being a "player" in the Free Agent market this year but he doesn't understand that GOOD players DON'T want to play for the Nationals.

Sure Leather Pants can offer Texiera $200 million but WHY would Tex want to go there if the Red Sox have offered $180 million? Is an extra $20 million dollars really worth the pain and depression that comes along with playing for a LOSING team? Also, how many more endorsements could Tex get if he played for the Red Sox than the Nationals?

I think playing meaningful Games in September year after year with the real possibility of going to the Play Offs and World Series, along with the endorsement deals, would trump any extra cash the Nationals would throw Texiera's way.

Nope, Dunn is going to sign a thre year, $39 million dollar deal and be the Nationals Left Fielder next year.

Why is everyone dropping triple crown type Lee to 5 or 6 in their hypothetical order? Why have your best clutch rbi guy sit on the bench as the top of the order flails in the 9th?

Bradley and Lou together in a clubhouse? Would that work?

Dunn has a great personality for northside. He's fun-loving, positive, and he can hit the ever-popular three-run homer. And it's always a blast watching a Cub dick around in the ivy.

How about trying:

Soriano
Theriot
Lee
Ramirez
Dunn
Soto
Pitcher
Fukudome/Johnson
DeRosa

This gives Soriano a chance to be a leadoff hitter in the first and a number three hitter the rest of the way. Pitcher gets pinch hit for from the third at bat usually anyway.

I'd love to have Dunn, but ONLY if he played first. I'm sure Hendry would never consider this idea, but I'd say sign Bradley to play Right, Dunn to play first, and offer up D Lee to SF for for Cain.

And while I'm dreaming, sign Smoltz and get Maddux to stop playing golf in the desert for one last shot.

E K- No way SF would take D Lee for Matt cain

how about a vernon wells/ soriano swap. Blue JAys need Salary relief so take on some money and get a good fielder and younger player.

"E K- No way SF would take D Lee for Matt cain"

Maybe. But I think they might. they need a middle of the order hitter and a firstbaseman desparately!. They have Lincecome and the best pitching prospect in the game ready to come up. Cain will be do a nice raise soon and D Lee's contract is not insane like the others Hendry has dished out. I think they might just make a deal like that.

Uh, why wouldn't the Giants keep Cain, play Sandoval at First Base and sign either Ty Wiggington or Joe Crede to play Third Base?

"Uh, why wouldn't the Giants keep Cain, play Sandoval at First Base and sign either Ty Wiggington or Joe Crede to play Third Base?"

Because like I said, they need a middle of the order bat. Please don't tell me you think either of those two qualify.

"Uh, why wouldn't the Giants keep Cain, play Sandoval at First Base and sign either Ty Wiggington or Joe Crede to play Third Base?"

This is probably the most logical solution for the Giants.

E K- Derrick Lee for Matt Cain just is stupid for the Giants. Cain's locked up to a team friendly contract, is healthy, and a really good pitcher. Lee's contract isn't great; it isn't an albatross but its market value. I don't even do Sanchez for Lee, and I'm not even close to a Giants fan.

"I don't even do Sanchez for Lee, and I'm not even close to a Giants fan. "

LMAO! You had me up til that comment.

Well, let's see; the last time I checked, good starting pitching is the most valuable and sought after thing there is in baseball and Cain is pretty good. So why would the Giants trade him for an older, more expensive player like Lee?

I mean, the NL West isn't going to be sooooo good that the Giants have to get rid of pitching to improve their Offense that much.

So signing Renteria gives them a top of the order hitter. Sandoval gives them a young, inexpensive guy who people seem to think can hit and Wiggington hit some Home Runs and drove in some runs with the Astros last year. He also wouldn't cost nearly as much as Lee would, salary-wise.

Plus, if the Reds have been looking at Wiggington as a middle of the order hitter then why shouldn't the Giants? Neither team has had a good record the last few years and the Reds have to deal with the Cubs in their Division. So, if Ca$htellini and Jocketty are delusional enough to think Wiggington is the middle of the order hitter the Reds need to put them over the top and competing against the Cubs then I don't see why he couldn't help the Giants in a weaker Division.

Dunn has hit a HR in every 2.6 games at Wrigley Field over his career. That projects to 31 HRs a season at Wrigley alone.

"Wiggington hit some Home Runs and drove in some runs with the Astros last year."

That was in Minute Maide Park. Wiggington in SF will be a disaster.

"Plus, if the Reds have been looking at Wiggington as a middle of the order hitter then why shouldn't the Giants?"

That's not much of an argument considering the Reds are aweful.

Cain has been a good pitcher thus far, but I'm not sure he's going to ever be the top of the rotation guy everyone thought he might be. Cain for Lee is a very reasonable trade for both teams IMO.

"So, if Ca$htellini and Jocketty are delusional enough to think Wiggington is the middle of the order hitter the Reds need to put them over the top and competing against the Cubs then I don't see why he couldn't help the Giants in a weaker Division."

Ever think part (most) of the reason they are dillusional about Wiggy is because the launching pad in Cincy is just as friendly a hitters park as Houston?

Dunn hasn't had to play every Home Game in April and May where it is cold (the ball doesn't carry very well) and the wind is blowing in. With his uppercut swing, Dunn isn't a line drive hitter which is what is often required to hit a Home Run when the wind is howling in towards teh Infield.

With his high drives, the wind will blow them back so they can be caught or they will get blown foul.

Dunn also hasn't had to play his Home Games in August in the middle of afternoon. Look at Dunn's career stats in September and you will see they fall of the table.

This is either because A) football season has started and Dunn loses interest in his job, B) Dunn is tall and heavy and playing an entire season tires him out and he loses his power or C) both A and B.

Whatever the answer is, I can just see Dunn staggering around the field, day after day, in 90+ degree heat and THEN being counted on in a September pennant drive to be productive.

Also, most of Dunn's production happens during a couple of two week hot streaks. So, I can just see him getting hot on the Road in May and then coming back to cold and windy Wrigley Field and that hot streak getting cut short.

So, go ahead and sign Dunn. Then watch as he falters early and late in the season.

But oh that 500 foot Home Run in July will more than make up for it all wont it?

Not.

EK.

Why, in this economic environement, get rid of a young, inexpensive Pitcher for an older, highly paid veteran when a team can just go out and sign a corner Outfielder/First Basemen for cheap?

Why not just save the pitching and wait and see if the Giants are in contention before the trade deadline and THEN trade him away if they need to?

A team can ALWAYS waste money on a hitter but they can NOT always have a decent young, inexpensive Pitcher on the team.

EK.

Yes, but adding Wiggington doesn't really help the Reds because OTHER teams can hit Home Runs just as easily in GASP as the Reds can.

Since GASP is a launching pad, the Reds can just as easily get a guy who hits 15 or 20 Home Runs a year and see his production increase.

The Giants, on the other hand, play in a park that is much harder to hit Home Runs in and they were near the bottom of the NL in a LOT of Offensive categories. I think they need to keep their pitching (so as to take advantage of their park) and get a hitter with some power.

So what if Wiggington "only" hits 20 Home Runs for the Giants in 2009? That would be four more than Bengie Molina hit in 2008 when he led the team in Home Runs with 16.

Heck, ALL of the guys who played Third Base for the Giants COMBINED to hit 12 Home Runs and drive in 59 RBI's last year.

First off ctown cowboy... Did you watch the Cubs-Reds game last year when Dunn hit that bomb over Sheffield Avenue and nearly went through the window on the third story of the building?... WTF r u talking about?

But anyways... if we really wanted to get a championship we'd add leadership and hardworkers to our teams to push the Ramirez's of the world to play at the top of their game: Just think about this lineup

1: Jerry "I play harder than anyone in MLB" Hairston Jr. (SS)
2: Derrek "I ground into a dp more than anyone on the planet and still bat 3rd" Lee (1B)
3: Milton "Did I make the All-Star team last year or was that a dream" Bradley (RF)
4: Aramis "I'm clutch, except for the playoffs" Ramirez (3B)
5: Alfonso "I'm worst than Ramirez in the playoffs" Soriano " (LF)
6: Geovany "I'm gonna be the best catcher in the league in 3 years" Soto (C)
7: Mike "could be just as good as Pedroia given the chance" Fontenot (2B)
8: Reed "The heart of the team" Johnson & Kosuke "I spent too much time trying to learn english instead of learning how to hit" Fukudome (CF)

Trades: Mark DeRosa/Josh Vitters/Felix Pie/Kevin Hart for Jake Peavy

Rotation: Zambrano, Dempster, Peavy, Harden, Lilly

Bullpen: Marshall, Gregg, Marmol, Gaudin, Cotts, Samardzija, Guzman, (Another solid lefty reliever)

I know there is a lot of risk involved in this because of injuries and what not but for christ's sake you have to be willing to take the risk to get the reward (which is something the Cubs haven't done for going on 101 years now) Just a thought...

""I don't even do Sanchez for Lee, and I'm not even close to a Giants fan. "

LMAO! You had me up til that comment."

I'll rationalize this.

Derrick Lee is a 3 win player with declining defense, making 13MM a year. Which, frankly, is only 2MM below fair market value (5MM/win) for his production. If his defense declines further, he'll be paid at or above fair market value. You don't give up quality young pitching for a guy who is being paid fair market value or barely below it.

And, Jonathan Sanchez was VERY unlucky last year. A FIP of 3.85 (FIP of 4.76 in '07) is pretty damn good. Generally, pitchers regress to their true talent level, which is shown by their FIP.

The reason why Wiggy is a good idea is because Wiggy isn't a long term solution. Either go for Wiggy at 3B, or, if you really want to sacrifice defense in favor of offense, go for Giambi at 1B. A rebuilding team should NOT be trading young, cost controlled pieces for expensive veterans. Period.

"Trades: Mark DeRosa/Josh Vitters/Felix Pie/Kevin Hart for Jake Peavy"

Who do you trade DeRosa to to get prospects to flip to the Padres for Peavy, since SD has zero use for DeRosa, being a FA after the 2009 season.

Ctownboy, it isnt that much warmer in Cinci at the start of the season than in chicago.I also seem to remember dunn playing pretty well at the end of the season for arizona. It isnt possible to have a couple week hot streaks and hit 40 HR,100R.B.I a season like he consistently does. Are you affraid that dunn will sign with the cubs and not your team?

The Phillies, Cubs, and Padres had a three way deal that would send DeRosa to the Phillies and they would in return send big league ready talent to the Padres but Hendry backed out.

Other than that, according to numerous reports on this website and others there were about 10 teams inquiring about the services of Mark DeRosa

EK

The Giants are not trading Matt Cain. He's signed for 11M over the next 3 years. That's dirt cheap for a #2 starter with no injury history and plus upside (he's younger than Lincecum). Plus Lee has a no-trade contract so he's not going anywhere.

The Giants look like there going young. Ishikawa is a 1B with some nice upside 27 hr's between AA,AAA, and the majors last year. Besides 1B is the easiest position to fill in a trade.

ctownboy

I like the idea of Wiggington. He could maybe play 1st, 3rd and a little LF.

Hoosier,

Yes, but does hitting a Home Run 500 feet count any more than hitting a Home Run 375 feet?

I also saw Dunn misplay a Fly Ball hit by Fukudome in the seventh Inning of a Game Cueto was pitching. There were Two Outs and the Cubs were leading 2 to 0. The ball was easily catchable but Dunn ran a bad route to the ball and didn't know where the wall was. The ball fell in for a "Double", a Run scored and Cueto was visibly upset on the mound.

He was ultimately knocked out of the Game, the Cubs ended up scoring three RUns that Inning and the Cubs won 5 to 0.

If Dunn catches that ball the Inning is over, the Reds get to bat and Cueto is still in the Game.

And the Reds lose 2 - 0.

ptk,

The difference in temperature between Chicago and Cincinnati early in the season can be great. Also, GASP is more of an enclosed stadium than Wrigley is so the wind doesn't blow in as much.

As far as two hot streaks, you obviously haven't watched Dunn. As a Reds fan, I have had the "privilege" of seeing him play for eight years and I don't want him back. EVER. No matter what the cost.

Most players who put up big numbers do it over a full season. You can cherry pick 40 of their best Games and pull the stats from those and they will have big stats. With Dunn, his best Games come in streaks. So, instead of 40 Games spread out through the season, his are all together. The other 120 Games, he isn't very good.

In 2008, in 16 Games from May 14 to May 31, Dunn went 18 for 48 (.375 Batting Average) with 13 Runs scored, eight Home Runs and 17 RBI's.

In 24 Games in July, Dunn went 26 for 84 (.310 Batting Average) with 16 Runs scored, 12 Home Runs and 26 RBI's.

So, in 40 consecutive Games (25.3% of his total Games played) over two hot streaks, Dunn went 44 for 132 (.333 Batting Average) with 29 Runs scored, (36.7% of his season's total) 20 Home Runs (50% of his season's total) and 43 RBI's (43% of his season's total).

The rest of the year, in 118 Games, Dunn went 78 for 385 (.203 Batting Average) with 50 Runs scored, 20 Home Runs and 57 RBI's.

As far as his time in Arizona goes, his Home Runs dropped from hitting 1 in every 11.65 At Bats with Cincinnati to hitting 1 in every 18 At Bats with the D-backs. In a 525 At Bat season, that would mean his Home Runs would drop from 47 to 29.

Combine that drop in production with his BAD Defense and Dunn isn't worth the risk.

sweetswing,

No, the Reds go into the eighth Inning down 2 to 0.

Being down two Runs late in the Game is much different than being down five Runs.

I wouldnt mind Dunn in right field at Wrigley. With the team the Cubs have, If Dunn is slumping, put Derosa or Hoffpauir in Right for a day off.

Either that or resign edmonds to an incentive laden deal :)

ctown... I'm not advocating signing Dunn at all I just think his OBP and power could be useful to the Cubs if they do go in that direction.

I think Milton Bradley (.321/22/77/.436OBP) or Bobby Abreu (.296/20/100/22SB) would be a much better fit because they can bat third (which takes Derrek Lee out of his inning ending douple play routine), they're both faster than Dunn so either one would add team speed, and both have a lot of pop left in their bats.

I also really hope that the trade talks for Peavy aren't completely squashed and Hendry is just making Towers sweat it out in hopes that he won't ask so much in return for Peavy. This being said, we should also unload DeRosa right now while his value is as high as it will ever be... I don't think any true fan of the Cubbies thinks he can repeat the year that he had last year.

Also, I'm not positive on the free agent status of Jerry Hairston Jr. and whether he's been signed or not, but before he got hurt last year he was by far my favorite player in the league. He would be a huge addition, much like Reed Johnson. Being from Indiana, I get FSN Ohio and watch a lot of Reds games and that man shows up to play and gives 110% every night and that's exactly what the Cubs need when the Playoffs roll around next year.

ctown, I know being down 2 runs late is different than being down 5 runs late. But the example you picked doesn't make your point. If Cincy had scored 2 runs, and the Reds had lost 5-2, it would. Besides, why are you going through all this trouble to tell us that Dunn is bad defensively? We know that.

Just sign him already. It's obvious that Bradley doesn't want to play for the Cubs or else he would have already signed. Plus he's a huge injury risk.

Dunn is young and could replace Lee at first base when his contract expires. We'd only have to deal with him in RF for a year or so and we could always put Fukudome, or Johnsen out there for defense in the late innings. Get it done!

This is how I'd put the lineup:

Theriot
DeRosa
Ramirez
Dunn
Lee
Soriano
Soto
Johnson/Fukudome

For once, how about the Cubs do something that makes sense.

With a line of
Theriot
Johnson/ Fukudome
Dunn
Ramirez
Soriano
Lee
Soto
DeRosa

It would be unstopable (Is that even word?)

E K: The Giants are not interested in trading Cain anywhere for anyone. They didn't even blink when Prince Fielder for Cain was brought up around the time of the Ray Durham trade. Prince is more of what they want in comparison to Lee. Younger, cheaper, and will hit balls into the cove more than Lee. (Defense is worse but they were starting Klesko there just 2 years ago). If they wouldn't even think twice about Fielder with 3 1/2 to 3 seasons left on his contract, they sure aren't taking Lee for 2 years.

GEO: why would the Cubs want to trade for a blocked player?? (Salty). Plus the Rangers can get more value for him elsewhere if they want to get rid of him.

Fukodome: I don't get why he is all of a sudden a huge upgrade in CF (enough to make up for Dunn/Soriano) when he claimed all last season that he didn't want to play there and there must be a reason. Plus with the way Lou publically took him to the woodshed I can't see how he will be anything but a bust due to a lack of confidence.

"But, he might be being persuaded to go there because he is working out with the Cubs 1st rounder this year, Andrew Cashner. I will see Cashner on Tuesday, so I might ask him what Dunn thinks and will send an email to Tim."

What could Cashner tell Dunn about the Cubs? Cashner has a few months in the system in the minors. Dunn has played at Wrigley as an opposing player for years. Ofcourse Dunn ranks the Cubs high on his list. He knows they are looking for a lefty bat and he needs a job.

Great analysis and comments from various perspectives.

I wonder if ay team officials read this stuff?

Happy holidays to all!

I would love to have Dunn but at 1B.. Then trade Lee to open up $$$ for Peavy and keep DeRosa in RF... I DO NOT WANT Bradley!!!

Husker: How do the Cubs get Peavy without giving up DeRosa? They don't have much that the Padres want unless DeRosa or even Theriot is dealt for young pitching in a three way deal. The Twins were looking for middle IF to give the Cubs pitching to satisfy the Padres needs. Lee couldn't be traded to the Padres straight up because they already have a pretty good 1B that they are happy with.

Dunn would also be a huge downgrade from Lee on defense.

I just don't think the Cubs need Peavy unless they are scared about Harden or Zambrano getting hurt. They have a good team on paper. They just need that lefty power hitter that they will find. The only other thing they need is to come through when it counts.

EK- Are you insane. When trading Cain, talks would start with a player like Fielder whos is young and under control for acouple years at a cheap price. Plus 20 homers at wrigley isnt exactly a middle of the order hitter you MUST have. Also, Cain is already a top of the rotation pitcher, hes dominant. Theres no possible way that the other 28 teams in the league would sit back and watch Cain be traded for Lee (which is still a joke) and not make a faaaaarrrr better offer.

And the comment you laughed at earlier about Lee not being enough for Sanchez, might want to think before you laugh. While that could be an even trade, again the Giants would look for a younger player who doesnt cost as much. This isnt just poeple talking out of our ass those are things the giants front office has come out and said.

sweetswing,

Sorry. My point was, the ball Fukudome hit was one that wasn't affected by the wind. Dunn just ran a bad route to it and didn't know where the wall was. Being an eight year veteran who has played in Wrigley many times THAT isn't what you should expect.

Now, just think about him having to try and paly Defense when the wind is blowing.

Also, for being a highly recruited high school Quarterback who went to the University of Texas, Dunn doesn't have a very strong or accurate arm.

Last year, Prince Fielder scored from Second on a base hit to Left and Dunn's throw wasn't very strong or very close to getting Fielder out.

If you look at Dunn and Soriano's fielding percantages, Dunn's is better. There is nothing wrong with Dunn's defense besides the fact that he is kinda slow. Plus, I have read that he lost 15 pounds already this offseason.

Dunn is hardly the crappy defensive player everyone is making him out to be. I highly doubt you'll be complaining too much when we have a 5 run lead and Dunn makes an error.
