According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Blue Jays signed catcher Michael Barrett to a minor league deal. Barrett, 32, accepted the Padres' offer of arbitration in December of '07. He injured his elbow in April and broke his nose in July, resulting in a second consecutive lost season.

No! I thought the Marlins could get him!

JP Ricciardi lied to us! He said he wasn't going to spend money!

Aww...I thought the Marlins could get him...

Good signing on a minor league deal. He could end up a bargain, and there isn't any risk involved.

i though the blue jays siad the where done and wherent gana do anything else this offseasoon

If he can hit again they should move him to a corner infield spot as a backup because he is just an awful catcher.

this signing sucks. barrett is a backup lunatic catcher who fights with his pitchers. and if i hear 1 more person say low risk high reward type signing, im gunna go crazy bc this guy doesnt bring any reward with him. he fist fights his pitchers and gives you about a 200 batting average. have fun competing for 5th place toronto!

I'd rather have to bear it than have to have Barrett.

Ah, you have to remember: By Barrett signing with a Canadian team, the pitching staff is sure to be able to take advantage of the socialized medical and dental care that nation has. No doubt the lost teeth from Barrett knuckle sandwiches are small prices to pay for such a solid citizen and contributor.
I knew a guy who used to argue (3 years ago) that this Barrett was one of the top 3 catchers in the game. After naming 7 who were objectively and indisputably better at that time without taking a breath, he backed off.
One positive: The hot stove is now cooking, as the mediocre-at-best-catcher market is really beginning to take shape! (Bard, Barrett, Cash, etc.)

Don't know about his defence/handling of a pitching staff, but those '04-06 OPS numbers are quite tantalizing...
Posted by: Jays2010 | December 29, 2008 at 02:55 PM
His defense stinks, his footwork is off, his arm is ok but he doesn't get good throws off because he's out of position/isn't accurate, pitchers don't especially like to throw to him, has too many passed balls and offensively, he's a zero. Those .800+ OPS numbers are long gone.

the only person needing the canadian insurance is barrett.
he got his ass beat by mr. zambrano, and i don't really see his cage-fighting skills improving since then.

I've heard he was on great behavior during his tenure in San Diego.

This signing will look just fine if the Red Sox spend $10 million a year for Varitek.
A .200 hitter is a .200 hitter; bad attitude or not.

Yeah, he stopped hitting his teammates - and the ball!

They should bring back Shea Hillenbrand and trade for AJ Pierzinsky as their full-time catcher with Barrett as the back-up. At least the Jays would be mentioned on ESPN for the clubhouse fights.

Only if they re-hire John Gibbons as manager or bench coach or something.

I wouldn't consider 2007 a lost season, just a crappy one.
Anyway, a catcher who gets in fights with his pitchers is not exactly a positive, but Barrett can no doubt hit when healthy. Why not just stick him at DH and 3B if he can still throw?
