« Mark Teixeira Rumors: Thursday | Main | Jeremy Guthrie Leaves Boras »
We learned yesterday that Brian Fuentes is a priority for the Cardinals. Tonight, however, ESPN's Steve Phillips reports that the Cards' negotiations with Fuentes have slowed. Two new unknown suitors have entered the picture. Word was yesterday that Fuentes could snag a three-year, $33MM deal, even though Francisco Rodriguez was guaranteed only $4MM more. John Mozeliak told MLB.com's Matthew Leach the Cards would be extremely hesitant to commit $10MM+ to a reliever.

Steve Phillips traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, that guy has 0 credibility, he's an idiot just like Ken Rosenthal.

Im surprised he hasn't been signed yet by someone. Shows that economy is tough unless you are the NY Yankees. A lot teams need a closer.

Cardsfan387 Jim Duquette was the GM who made the Kazmir/Victor Zambrano trade not Steve Philips. So maybe you could get your facts straight instead of questioning credibility and calling people idiots.

Angels
Brewers
Darkhorse:

Absolutely no GM is an idiot, but Phillips is borderline.
There's a reason he hasn't been hired by someone else.

Call it a hunch, but I gotta put the Brewers at the top of the list. With CC gone, the crew needs a closer with Torres and Gagne gone...Fuentes will be a brewer.
Oh and by the way, Phillips is almost as bad as Lou Holtz. Ken Rosenthal is close behind. Much agreed.

Nice work cardsfan.

I'm vehemently against the Cardinals signing him, but I still have to put the Cardinals at the top of the list. Simple. It's a pressure/PR situation. TLR has much more positive vibe than Mo, and TLR went out and said to the media that Fuentes was a good idea. Mozeliak's public relations is a bit negative right now, especially with how the 2008 season went. He's going to have a s#itton of pressure to do what TLR says. Hopefully he doesn't cave in though.

i think hes an angel in the end. They will probably be outbid by the yankees for tex, so mite as well patch up with a decent closer and maybe a cheap veteran.

As an A's fan, I hope this happens.
Fuentes makes sense, but would not be the smartest acquisition for the Angels. Arredondo is laying around, making league minimum and under team control for 5 more years. Get a Juan Cruz type or someone who would work behind Arredondo, and hand Jose the reins.

Angels will get him. I dont see the cardinals dumping that kind of money into Fuentes.

17 blown saves in the lst 3 yrs is not worth 33 mil.
