7:52pm: Fuentes appears to be top priority for the Cardinals and manager Tony La Russa.
6:27pm: Ken Rosenthal has a source who expects Brian Fuentes to score a three-year, $33MM deal. That might be too pricey for the Cardinals, Brewers, and Tigers, leaving perhaps the Angels.

could the Cardinals or Angels get in the bobby jenks sweepstakes if fuentes signs elsewhere??
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | December 10, 2008 at 06:31 PM
I thought the Angels were happy with Arredondo in the closer role in '09?
Posted by: rollingdeuce | December 10, 2008 at 06:42 PM
yeah, this makes no sense. Why not just sign K-Rod for $4M more with a much higher probability?

The Angels inexplicably gave away Bobby Jenks for practically nothing when he was one of their top prospects... I seriously doubt they'd be willing to give up any value now to trade for him. Been there, done that.

Inexplicably? Jenks was a fat, violent, alcoholic who was getting into fights with teammates and managers. There was more than enough reason to get rid of him. And there is no way they'd bring him back.

They got $20k for a closer who's saved 115 games in 3 seasons, and lead his team to a World Championship. I would call that inexplicable.

What happened to the rumors of Fuentes and the Brewers? Oh yeah, Milwaukee isn't going to do anything now that they signed CC. Oh wait, thats right. CC Is a Yankee!
Wake up Melvin!!!! No rumors whatsoever from Milwaukee. This is insane! We have $$$ and are not in the mix.
We liked Kerry Wood, he signs with the Indians. We liked Putz and now seems like he may be traded.
Melvin has a history of overpaying for closers. Gagne worth $10 million. That worked well. Why don't you work from within and just use McClung as the closer and get us some starting pitching Doug?
They like Hoffman as well? Hmmm, get someone at the end of their career. Good thinking.

CardsCrazy87 are you really a Cardinal fan or a cub fan in disquise. Fuentes is one of e best closers available through free agency. He is also a lefty. They want Fuentes because of all the blown saves last year and if you want Perez or Motte to close next year, t you be looking for another losing season.
Posted by: Knuffy | December 10, 2008 at 10:30 PM
Knuffy im a cards fan. I know fuentes is a good closer and is a lefty, but w or wout him the cards arent going to have shot at the playoffs. Save the dough and play the waiting game. Or spend cheap on trevor hoffman. IMO closers are proclaimed great if they ONLY blow 5 games a year, so perez with a little time should be fine. As much as i hate to say it the cubs will win the damn division.
