Brewers Not Close To Looper Deal

5:41pm: Brewers GM Doug Melvin confirmed interest in Looper but denied that they're close to a deal.  Melvin would not say whether the Brewers made an offer, but suggested Looper and the Brewers' other targets want multiyear deals.

10:28am: In the "Etc." section of his Sunday update, Nick Cafardo has some updated information on a few free agents, as well as some potential trades.

  • Updating a key part of the back-of-the-rotation market, Cafardo says Braden Looper is "close to signing with the Brewers."
  • The Diamondbacks and Red Sox may soon revisit the possibility of an Eric Byrnes trade. Such a deal would likely be made more enticing for the Sox if Miguel Montero were somehow included.
  • The Red Sox would really rather not move Clay Buchholz for a catcher, even if that catcher were Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden of the Texas Rangers. However, Daniel Bard may be in play for a potential deal with Texas.
  • The Reds, Indians, Pirates and Giants are all in the mix for Ty Wigginton. Back on Dec. 18, we had a Wigginton update in an Odds and Ends post that said the player was not interested in returning to Pittsburgh.

Other topics of note (found on page 5 of Cafardo's article) include the Tampa Bay Rays' plan for a DH upgrade, as well as some notes on Derek Lowe and Manny Ramirez.

Why do the Brewers need another back of rotation candidate?

They need a #2-3 type guy to go with Gallardo more than they need a BOR candidate IMO.

You have to give up equal talent to get talent. No deal for a Texas catcher should be made without one of Buchholz or Bowden. This is getting old and annoying.

Where would Byrnes play in that already soild Sox outfield?

LF-Bay
CF-Ellsbury
RF-Drew
??-Byrnes

"Tampa Bay Rays - Looks as if they'll add Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell. Seems as if the prices for these guys are dropping rapidly, and the Rays might be able to add a pretty good hitter to replace Cliff Floyd and/or Rocco Baldelli."

Please tell me that is the final 4, I love all 4 of them.

why is Miguel Montero so coveted, he sucks

Rumor has it that Giambi is going to sign with the A's and when the Nats finally realize that they have zero chance of signing Texiera, they'd definitely be in on Dunn (plus, there's his previous relationship with Jim Bwoden to consider).

That would leave Bradley and Burrell. Out of the two, Bradley would be the better fit, but Burrell seems the most likely. There's not really a market for Burrell right now and I could see him signing a cheaper deal than Bradley will.

Brewers go from Sabathia to Looper. Not Good.

The Brewers should just re-sign Sheets on a 2 or 3 year deal and call it a day.

Agreed talent for talent but the Sox are at least in a fortunate enough situation where there are several teams with a catcher to give, so for now they can stay low on their offers until someone gives them the best deal possible.

Going back and forth with Byrnes/Montero will give them some leverage as they won't have to give up much at all if they eat Byrnes entire contract so my guess is they are just using this scenerio to drive the price down with the Rangers.

I like Montero and I think he is capable of hitting .250 with 15-20HR's in the Sox lineup in full time duty, but....he would essentially cost $22 million (Byrnes contract) for the first 2 years.

At some point the Sox have to pick an option, but as of right now they are all in the same ballpark of cost/reward.

1. Trade a young cost controlled pitcher (which the Sox covet as it helps them avoid overspending on lengthy/risky free agent pitchers) for a top tier young catcher like Salty or Teargarden.

2. Eat Byrnes contract and give up little to get Montero. Cost is obvious $22 million for a 4th OF and a average catcher with upside

3. Resign Tek. If the Sox can resign Tek for substantially less then 2 years / 22 million (which is what it cost for option 2.) then I think they go this route.

Outside of Teixeira, the Sox have the need for a 4th OF and a catcher and I think they have 1 budget for both of these holes.

If Tek + Free Agent 4th OF (like Baldelli) would about $22 million for 2 years I think this is the move they make.

If the Sox do give up Buchholz I think they will bring back either Salty or Teargarden and their 4th OF from the Rangers in the same deal.

My best guess is the Sox end up with Saltalamachhia and Byrd for Buchholz; unless Tek comes down on his asking price.

why is Miguel Montero so coveted, he sucks

Posted by: Showtime35 | December 21, 2008 at 10:51 AM

Montero isn't coveted but he does have solid upside. He is 25 (which is young for a catcher ) with 3 years of MLB experience working with guys like Webb/Johnson.

He also has 20+ HR power as he has already shown this power and will continue to develop his power stroke because again he is only 25.

To me, Montero is a lot like Mike Napoli. He won't hit for average but he provides pop and is a decent enough defensive catcher to start at the major league level.

Wiggington anod Balelli would complete the for the Reds.

Baldelli cud play Center, Wiggington or EE in left. (other at third)

We dont get the power hitter..but this could make the best, well rounded offense in years.

We could even trade EE..but i would like that team A LOT even if Votto-Bruce hit 3-4

complete the OF*

i dont know why daniel bard wouldnt cut it for the rangers. he put up a great season, i know how the rangers are looking for a young starter, but he can be a very dominant reliever, and is rated just below bowden according to soxprospects.com.

Michael Bowden is a top 50 prospect. Easily.

Bard isn't. And I'm not talking Bard could rank #51, etc.

Huge, huge difference. Bowden's got frontline upside, which is why the Rangers should demand him.

"Where would Byrnes play in that already soild Sox outfield?"

The original trade idea was some kind of Lugo for Byrnes swap. Lugo would man second for the d-backs, Byrnes would be a 4th outfielder for the Sox. Since Byrnes can play all 3 outfield positions it makes a decent idea.

Byrnes/Montero for Lugo/Bard seems possible since the Sox won't give up Bowden for Montero. Bard would be considered a possibility to close or set up in 2 years. And Montero has great offensive potential, hopefully Tek will come back to train him as a defender. And if Montero doesn't work out, the Sox have some decent prospects in the system (despite being 3-4 years away).

""Tampa Bay Rays - Looks as if they'll add Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell. Seems as if the prices for these guys are dropping rapidly, and the Rays might be able to add a pretty good hitter to replace Cliff Floyd and/or Rocco Baldelli."

That is the final four.

I don't see the Rays settling for 2nd tier guys now that all the prices are through the floor.

good point melonis, didnt think of it that way

Bowden is a top 100 prospect, not a top 50. Everywhere I've read says he has mid-rotation potential, with Jeff Suppan as a good comp.

Bard would be lucky to make the top 100. Relief prospects just aren't that valuable on the trade market, and certainly not valuable enough to net a catching prospect by themselves.

I know that rumors include crazy ideas too, but is there anyone who thinks the Red Sox are going to trade Clay Buccholz for anyone? The man had a poor sophomore season, but he's got #1 stuff and a major league no-hitter on his resume. Sorry to sounds like a petulant child, but he will not be traded - not for one of the Rangers catchers, not for anybody. I'm sure the Rangers are begging for him. It will never, ever happen.

The Red Sox can play the waiting game until someone finally blinks.

Tek is always an option but the Red Sox have in the minors George Kottaras and Dusty Brown who while not good would likely be able to reproduce the same results Tek produced in 2008 for much less money. Platoon them and wait until something better comes along.

"but is there anyone who thinks the Red Sox are going to trade Clay Buccholz for anyone?"

Theo has apparently flat out said Buchholz is off limits. I heard a rumor that some of the Sox vets got on Clay's back about his effort and work habits... so maybe we'll see the potential of Buc come through.

"Everywhere I've read says he has mid-rotation potential, with Jeff Suppan as a good comp."

Bowden has #2-#3 potential... I think he could make it in the top 50 prospects.

Varitek is still out there, isn't that right Boras.

I THINK THE RANGERS SHOULD TRADE SALTAMACHHIA,BYRD AND KASEY KIKER FOR BUCHOLTZ AND BARD OR BOWDEN,BARD AND HAGADONE EITHER ONE OF THOSE TRADES WOULD BE OK FOR BOTH TEAMS THE SOX GET THERE CATCHER OF THE FUTURE THERE 4TH OUTFIELDER AND THE RANGERS GET PITCHING WHAT THEY NEED

kerelcooper: the brewers aren't neccessarily going from Sabathia to Looper. I believe the Brewers want to put suppan in the bullpen or at least create some competition on the back end of the rotation and this would a step towards doing that.

Do not forget that Sheets and Gallardo were out for most of the time Sabathia was pitching. If the Brewers re-sign Sheets, sign Lowe (both unlikely), or find a trade, the rotation won't be much different. Instead of having one main guy, they'd have a couple very solid guys if any one of those three scenarios would work out.

They might also be taking this year off to rebuild a bit and go for it next year. Melvin has said all along that he thought this year's pitching market was very weak besides CC all along. They have Jeffries coming up in a year and next year's market may be more appealing to them. The Brewers aren't an organization that can afford to fail when they take risks. None of the available guys may be worth the risk. (Can't afford to sign another Suppan)

I think its a pretty safe assumption that Michael Bowden will be in the top 50 prospects for 2009.

He was ranked 94th overall coming into last season by Baseball America. He lowered his ERA at AA by 2 full runs (4.28 to 2.33) and upped his K/BB (2.48 to 4.21), having an extremely successful year at AA for a 22 year old (turned 22 in September). He had a good level of success in AAA in limited time and had a successful start in the majors in September.

Between the success of his 2008 season and the graduation from prospect status for a good number of those who were ranked above Bowden, I doubt that there is any question that he'll be in the top 50.

The BoSox could use Byrnes, JD Drew is injury prone and hasnt played more than 140 games 3 times in 11 seasons, Byrne has shown some power and if the Sox could dump a bloated contract (lugo) for a bloated contract (byrnes) is would be a good deal.

So are we saying the Dbacks signed Felipe Lopez so they could make a bad trade for Julio Lugo to be their backup infielder?

If the Sox were to trade for Byrnes, it would be to get Montero in a salary dump situation.

Bard would be all that is needed and Lugo/his contract would not be accepted.

The Diamondbacks want to move Byrnes salary, not replace one bad contract with another and lose a decent young catcher in the process.

Red Sox, listen to me, DONT GET BYRNES. IMO he's always been over-priced and we already know what to expect from him.

Do all you can to get Baldelli. It's almost certain Drew will be on the DL at some point so this 4th OF position is important. Make it Baldelli.

I am just waiting for the Yanks to chuck boatloads of cash Mark Teixeira's way...

Honestly, at this point, I think I'd take Montero over Saltalamacchia. I know Salty is still young with a ton of "upside," but he has still never posted anything resembling impressive numbers (in a decent sample size at least) since 2005 in high-A ball. In fact, those are the only impressive numbers he ever put up in the minors. At least Montero had pretty good numbers between AA and AAA in 2006 and posted respectable numbers last season. Salty's numbers last year were essentially the same as Asdrubal Cabrera (.253/.352/.364 and .259/.346/.366 respectively). Throw in the fact that Salty is still terrible behind the plate (allowed 6 PB and 40 of 49 SB in just 54 games), while Montero is at least decent (0 PB and 27 of 34 SB in 53 games) and I don't think its all that close.

Why would Texas accept bowden? They have a system full of pitchers with more upside than bowden. They hold all the cards in this game. If they don't get buccholz then they can wait til next offseason to trade a catcher, when its very possible that teagarden or salty would net more than buchholz.

The Rangers aren't competing in 2009, the wild card is not coming from the west. They already got rid of Laird and can afford to have Salty and Teagarden split time in 2009. There is ZERO urgency to move either guy so I really think the rangers hold all the cards. So what if the red sox take montero instead because of cost, there will be new suitors next year, bet on it.

If I am Texas, I would dangle Salty for either Bowden + Bard or for Bucholz and I leave it at that.

If patience is the game, the Rangers hold the winning hand. If Tek is the Red Sox ace in the hole, and it probably is, it remains a trump only so long as Jason shows he's still a viable catcher. As has been noted, Texas should have no sense of urgency. Let this thing play out. If the Red Sox come begging, make the deal. If they don't, wait till next year.

And after next year isn't it very possible Buchholz is worth substantially more then Salty or Teargarden?? So I don't really understand this argument.

One thing is certain, either if the Rangers hang on to both guys, at the end of next season one of them will be the starting catcher and the other the backup catcher. Its a good bet that the backup loses value or in the least doesn't suddenly become more valuable.

We are all aware there are other catchers the Red Sox could easily deal for /or sign for next year outside of Teargarden/Salty or Varitek right?

The Rangers don't "need" to trade a catcher and the Red Sox don't "need" to deal with just Texas to fill their catching need.

The list of mediocre free agent catchers is fairly long right now and while Salty or Teargarden project to eventually offer much more then these guys, for their rookie season they would likely struggle and not offer tremendous amounts more then some of the Veteran Free Agent catchers considering they would at least offer some level of experience working with Major League pitchers.

"Why would Texas accept bowden? They have a system full of pitchers with more upside than bowden. They hold all the cards in this game. If they don't get buccholz then they can wait til next offseason to trade a catcher, when its very possible that teagarden or salty would net more than buchholz."

Because the majority of the arms in their farm system are far away from the bigs. Neftali Feliz, Michael Main, Derek Holland, etc. are all aways away.

Guys who are closer to MLB-ready are more likely to reach their ceilings. Bowden is a surer bet to be a solid pitcher than Feliz, although Feliz has more upside than Bowden.

Although I'd still hold off for Bowden + Bard. Or Salty for Buchholz.

I don't trade Teagarden, period.

Then let the Red Sox go sign themselves one of the mutltiudes of excellent free agent catchers. Or milk the husk of Varitek for what he's worth. F-'em. The league doesn't need to bow down to the Yankees and Red Sox.

Maybe that is what the Rangers will do with the Sox. F'em. But, maybe the Sox look at it in another light. They just made it to game 7 of the ALCS with my grandmother playing catcher, while the Rangers haven't sniffed the playoffs in YEARS.

The Rangers don't need 3 catchers, while any team in baseball can use 5+ starting pitchers. The Red Sox don't need to trade a guy they project to be a solid middle of the rotation guy. Meanwhile, the Rangers will either delegate one of their prized catching prospects to DH (Ramirez) and one to backup, because there is no way Salty's or Teagarden's bats can justify sitting Davis. So either the Rangers send 1 or more guys down to the minors, or delegate them to part-time play, which may or may not have a great impact on their future value.

Kangaroo:

Of course Buchholz could be worth more than a catcher at this time next season. Or he could be worth less than he is now. Same goes for the catchers. My point was that Salty/Teagarden could be worth more than just a prospect after a full season (which, for those of you who think negatively of the term "backup", would consitute 90 games for Salty and 72 for Teagarden, plenty to show their ability).

melonis:

Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland COULD be up as early as 2009, but more likely 2010. Michael Main is a bit behind them because he was injured last season. Further away than Bowden? Maybe, but not by very much.

MLB.com doesn't have any of the Red Sox pitchers listed among its Top 50 Prospects for 2009:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/minorleagues/prospects/y2009/

That being said, I think a package of Bowden, Bard and a middle level prospect is fair in exchange for Saltalamacchia.

So, why isn't a deal happening? The problem, as I see it, is that both the Red Sox and the Rangers have stocked minor league systems. It makes it that much harder to do a 3 for 1 deal when someoone will end up having to cut 2 decent players off their 40 man roster to accomodate the new guys. When your farm system is rich, quantity is no longer the issue - it's quality that now matters. This is why the Rangers are inclined towards a 1 for 1 deal of Salty for Buchholz.

If the Rangers and Red Sox want to get a deal done, they may well have to bring a third team into the mix. Perhaps the Giants send Jonathan Sanchez to the Rangers, the Rangers send Salty to the Red Sox, and the Red Sox send Lowell, Bowden and cash to the Giants and Bard to the Rangers. It's complicated, but it just might work.

I'm also in favor of the Bard/Lugo - Montero/Byrnes trade. Red Sox got a lot of money to spare this year so Byrnes being an overpriced 4th OF isnt such a problem. I like that hes got decent speed and can play all positions. I do like Baldell more though ;).

I absolutely love Montero. He's got tons of potential and hes got some pop. I'm sure he'll bring in at least 70 RBIs for the Sox if he plays all year but hey any production is a plus because the Sox showed that they still got a good offensive lineup despite Tek's terrible numbers. As long as he hits above .220 and gets more than 40 or w/e RBI's, hes a plus.

I don't know if this is a good trade for ARI. As a Boston fan all I have natural Boston bias. I don't know much about Bard but I do know Lugo is terrible and way past his prime.

"Further away than Bowden? Maybe, but not by very much. "

Bowden would probably be in the Rangers rotation as it stands and in a majority of teams rotations already as well. Boston has a top rotation and he would be in it if it was not stocked so well. Last season if it was not so deep (Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Wake,Colon, Byrd, Masterson, Bucholz at any given point) there was no way he was getting into that 5 man rotation period, on a team with a much weaker roation and ERA of 5.00+ (Texas) it would have been easy to crack it, but Boston sent him down after his 1 good emergency start vs. Texas.

Just because a good pitcher is at AAA, does not mean he would not be starting, or even a 3-4 guy on another team already.

Doubt seriously Texas would get Bowden + Bard for either Salty or Teagarden either. Bard should make late next season also, they are taking it easy with him. Relievers that can hit 100mph+ are very rare.

"Red Sox, listen to me, DONT GET BYRNES. IMO he's always been over-priced and we already know what to expect from him"

Yeah all you can expect is him playing at 120 percent when given the chance(hurt or playing time)

Posted by: start_wearing_purple | December 21, 2008 at 11:32 AM

sox fans never see it from anyside besides their own. why the hell would the d backs want lugo when we just got felipe lopez? It'd nice to get rid of byrnesy but it will be hard to and get anything good back in return.

i'd give byrnes and montero in return for one of boston's three best pitching prospects.

montero is an great prospect and will bloom into a successful catcher if you just give him consistent playing time. he batted like .290 throughout the minors and was even made like the AP all minor league team or something like that.
