« Braves Sign Dave Ross | Main | Tigers Rumors: Everett, Laird, Garcia »
4:31pm: The results were positive; Carpenter will start a throwing program in January. The Cards could still pursue another starter though.
9:43am: According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter had a nerve conduction test yesterday. The team will learn the results today, and if they're concerned they could target an additional starter for 2009. Given this uncertainty, the Cardinals' decision not to offer arbitration to Braden Looper seems strange.
Elsewhere on John Mozeliak's agenda, Joe Strauss says he still seeks a second baseman and a closer. We haven't heard many names in recent weeks, perhaps because Mozeliak was focused on the Khalil Greene and Trever Miller acquisitions.

The Looper decision was strange indeed. I will say I am quite pleased with Mozeliak so far though and I'm fairly confident he has solid rationale for the decision. I just can't figure out what that rationale is though. Regardless of Carp's test results they need another starter. If his arm is still messed up they need 2 starters.

Idk what to make of Carpenter anymore, his arm seems to have fallen off just like Mulder's had.

More like his career is shaping up like Hampton's with us the last 6 years....

I highly doubt the Pads would take Ludwick as the centerpiece to a Peavy deal. They are trying to slash payroll. Ludwick is probably going to get 3+ million in arb this year and if he keeps up his #'s it will be much higher next year and the year after. Plus they want good young starting pitching that the Cardinals have a lack of.

looper rationale
perhaps moz thought:
1) if carp was healthy he would rather spend the looper money on a closer (rotation of carp, waino, wellemeyer, lohse, pinhead)
2) if carp was not healthy he would need to get a pitcher better than looper
if you offer looper arbitration you have to plan as though he would accept.

If Mo ever counted on Carpenter for anything this year, he is a r3tard and should be fired.
Unless Looper did something to really, really piss off LaRussa, there is no good enough reason that I see to them not offering it to him.
"if you offer looper arbitration you have to plan as though he would accept."
Not really. but in this case, if he did, great. If he didn't, great. But they didn't go for either of those, and it doesn't make a lot of sense why.

use Ludwick as a centerpiece to get Peavy just throw in some A league arms to satisfy the Pads

hahahahahahahaha.

I'm pretty sure Rasmus, not Ludwick, would have to be at the center of any Peavy-to-Cardinals deal.
Why do rumors about Ludwick being traded keep appearing? Selling high? I think Ludwick is part of any Cardinals team that makes a serious run at the division and the Cubs next year.

Well in all seriousness, the Cards could probably compete for the services of Peavy if they're willing to make an offer around Ramus (and don't the Cards have a pretty good pitching prospect?) AND of course Peavy is willing to go to St. Louie.

Carpenter threw 464 IP, not including playoffs, in '05 and '06. That is a stress in anyones arm, but some can take it - he couldn't.

Good news on Carp, a healthy Carpenter will be huge for the Cards

"That is a stress in anyones arm, but some can take it - he couldn't."
He's also had his arm rebuilt multiple times.

Carpenter and Mulder are apples and oranges. Last time I checked Mulder did not have 5 plus pitches and actually know how to pitch (the intangible stuff you can't be taught). Big difference. Give Carp the benefit of the doubt. He can still be a big contributor to this team.

Hombre - I think the Mulder-Carpenter comparison had to do with durability, not stuff.
I think a healthy Carpenter would be a great boost for the Cardinals, but it would be foolish for the organization to count on him throwing 200 innings. The smart move would be to establish some more SP depth and develop a contingency plan.

If Greene and Miller are any indication, Mozeliak is probably targeting Brandon Lyon and Mark Grudzielanek as his closer and second base solutions.

I would actually be somewhat happy seeing Grudzy back in red.

Looper may have been awarded an $8 million salary in arbitration. A sandwich pick would be nice but it isn't worth giving the player (and his agent) that much leverage.
The Cardinals didn't offer him arbitration so they can choose to negotiate with Looper, Wolf, or anyone else on a level playing field.
Mo picked up Lohse on the cheap after his price dropped. Why get locked ito $8 million for Looper when you might have better options?
That makes more sense than hoping he signs with someone else for a snadwich pick.

He just as well might have gotten much less. Quoting the highest he was going to get doesn't do a whole lot here. The cards need pitching, flat out. He would have been a very good one year contract to have, period. Oh, and they would have gotten a draft pick if he left. They passed up on a win win situation. I seriously doubt they will come up with a better pitcher on a better contract than Looper at 1/6.5ish
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 06, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Quoting the lowest salary Looper would have received makes even less sense.
Looper made $5.5 million last year. He would have to get at least a 20-percent raise, which is $6.6 million. His agent would have asked for at least $8 million.
If it actually went to arbitration, it's an either/or proposition. More than likely, they would have settled somewhere in the middle.
That being said, why get locked into a guy for somewhere around $7 million when you might be able to find equal or better value later on (perhaps, even with the same player)?
You seriously doubt it now, but they did it last year with Lohse.
