« Ricciardi Mentions Giambi, Hudson | Main | Pirates Sign Bootcheck, Bautista »
MONDAY, 1:12pm: Kovacevic says Doumit is guaranteed $11.5MM with a maximum value of about $27MM. His three arb years were bought out for $10.7MM. He has further details at his blog.
SUNDAY, 11:21pm: Dejan Kovacevic says the Doumit contract has a one-time trigger for the option on his two free agency years. Talks with Paul Maholm are in progress, but talks with Nate McLouth broke down.
7:31pm: Crasnick has the financials: it could be worth $20MM over four years or $30MM over five years.
4:42pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick is reporting that the Pirates have reached an agreement on a three-year extension for Ryan Doumit, buying out his arbitration years.
Doumit, 27, hit .318/.357/.501 in 465 plate appearances in 2008. His .858 OPS ranks him alongside catchers such as Joe Mauer and Geovany Soto. Not bad company there.
The terms of the deal haven't been released yet, but Crasnick says there is a club option for a fourth year as well. The Pirates will announce the deal in a press conference tomorrow.
Crasnick also says the Pirates are still working to sign Nate McLouth to an extension, but those efforts have reached a stalemate for now.

Good move for the Pirates.

Wow. I had no clue Doumit was that good. I guess you learn something new every day.
Posted by: metsobsessed | December 21, 2008 at 04:58 PM
Doutmit is a good player, but seriously, them Bucs are still a good bit away from competing. Perhaps he becomes a great trade piece...eventually..
Posted by: B3NG4L | December 21, 2008 at 05:01 PM
So, I guess he's not coming to Boston?
Good signing by the Pirates... Wow, that's a shock.
Posted by: soxfan93 | December 21, 2008 at 05:09 PM
The extension only makes him that much more valuable as a trade chip. Don't under-estimate Huntington.
Posted by: MickS | December 21, 2008 at 05:20 PM
He was never going to Boston my man, ever. He's a Bucco and he's not getting traded. Retards.
Posted by: BuccoNation | December 21, 2008 at 05:26 PM
Not getting traded until they realize they won't be contenders. MickS is right, the signing only makes him more valuable as a trade chip. You really think the Pirates can be competitive in the next few years? lol.
Posted by: B3NG4L | December 21, 2008 at 06:05 PM
The signing gives them the chance to be successful. No team in the central is outstanding other than the Cubs, and they way things have be going with them (lots 'o money spent, little results), they may be over-extending themselves. Keep making good future-building signings/moves like this and they could be in the mix in 2010 or 2011.

"He was never going to Boston my man, ever. He's a Bucco and he's not getting traded. Retards."
Foolish Pirate fan. Why was he offered to Boston, then?
Good point by everyone else, though. Now that I think about it, you're right, the extension does make him more valuable to other teams. They know what they would have to pay him, rather than having to go to arbitration.
Posted by: soxfan93 | December 21, 2008 at 06:39 PM
Wouldn't mind Bucholz for Doumit...
Posted by: enchinga | December 21, 2008 at 07:02 PM
Not a big Pirate Fan but growing up with Doumit that is awesome.
Posted by: CubsFan91 | December 21, 2008 at 07:47 PM
If anyone played Fantasy Baseball last year, they definitely know alllllllllll about Doumit. He was probably one of the most valuable roto-wire additions after that draft for many players that didn't get a high end catcher.
My dark-horse catcher, if I don't nab a top-tier one, Mike Napoli. The guy was on FIRE at the end of the year, has easily 30 home run potential, and is good for a high OBP (if your league includes BB's and OBP into stats).
Posted by: MrBlake14 | December 21, 2008 at 08:21 PM
Chin Ling Hu for Doumit
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 21, 2008 at 08:31 PM
Chin Lung Hu for Doumit? That's as bad as the Pirates offering Jack Wilson for Matt Kemp.
5 mil a year for a great offensive catcher, amazing deal. I just hope he stays around and a few of the young hitters develop so he and Nate won't be expected to carry the lineup all year.
Posted by: bigpat | December 21, 2008 at 08:52 PM
I wanna see Julio Lugo for Doumit lol
Posted by: Umair | December 21, 2008 at 08:54 PM
sad thing is Boston fans probably think that's a deal that should happen.
Posted by: indybucfan | December 21, 2008 at 09:02 PM
indybucfan, that's not true. In my opinion:
1. Trade Michael Bowden and a mid-level prospect for Ryan Doumit.
2. Trade Julio Lugo for some new catchers' gear for Doumit.
That's more like it. :)
Posted by: soxfan93 | December 21, 2008 at 09:24 PM
I would love--LOVE--to see Doumit and Bay reunited on the Red Sox. I doubt highly that it will happen, but oh boy would it be great.
Posted by: peterherman | December 21, 2008 at 09:43 PM
Did they say what prospects the Bucs are looking to trade him for in 2 years?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 21, 2008 at 10:02 PM
Yeah Lars Anderson, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Kalish, and Dustin Pedroia for Doumit.
Posted by: vtadave | December 21, 2008 at 10:19 PM
LMAO at vtadave.

Brian McCann > Mauer/Soto/Doumit
Posted by: FanOTheRumors2 | December 21, 2008 at 10:45 PM
^ Agreed, FanOTheRumors2
"His .858 OPS ranks him alongside catchers such as Joe Mauer and Geovany Soto."
Was it just me or were you implying that he had the third best statistical season amongst catchers?

What sets him apart from McCann, Soto, Martin, and Mauer is defense. While some of the names i listed arent great defenders they can handle a staff pretty well, while from the games ive seen Doumit was pretty easy to run on and didnt call the greatest of games. However the pirates has a lot of young pitchers who were he wasnt used to so that may have be an issue. He can certianly hit, however from what ive read and heard he seems like hes destined to play 1st.

"Not getting traded until they realize they won't be contenders. MickS is right, the signing only makes him more valuable as a trade chip. You really think the Pirates can be competitive in the next few years? lol."
How many people thought the Rays were gonna be competitive this year when they signed Pena, Shields, Kazmir, and Longoria to extentions? They were coming off back to back seasons where they had the worst record in baseball but they realized that the only way that was gonna change was to build a nice young nucleus.
At the very least this deal gives the Pirates cost certainty for the next few years. And as others have pointed out it also would enhance Doumits trade value in the future.
Posted by: Steveo26 | December 22, 2008 at 02:49 AM
"Brian McCann > Mauer/Soto/Doumit"
yep, but his defense is worse than Soto's and Mauer's. Martin is in this group as well. I'd go:
1. McCann
2. Mauer
3. Soto
4. Martin
5. Doumit/Y. Molina
6. Y. Molina/Doumit
Those are my ranking when factoring in everything a catcher does...hitting, fielding, game calling, throwing runners out etc. Weiter's probably enters this class very, very soon as well.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Also, I think Doumit is going to have a hard time keeping that OPS, because I don't see him hitting .318 and his OBP isn't all that great for a guyt hat hit .310. So, if he hits like .280, I think he only has an OBP around .320 or so. Still a good catcher...but I would put him a notch below the McCann/Mauer/Soto/Martin group...probably with Y. Molina.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 10:25 AM
I am definitely interested in a signed Ryan Doumit card.
Posted by: Teetz1 | December 22, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Also, I'd definitely take Mauer. Consistently well above average the last 3 years and hit the same peaks as Mccann, while McCann had an off year in 2007 (as far as elite catchers go)
Posted by: Teetz1 | December 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM
Yeah, I would probably say that its kind of a wash IMO between McCann and Mauer...they are the elite class in the leauge right now. Then I think you have Soto and Martin in the next class, then guys like Doumit and Y. Molina a class below that.
If Soto improves on last year, he might enter the elite class.
I'll take McCann over Mauer...right now, but barely.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 11:37 AM
It's close but in my mind, Mauer's ridiculous defense puts him above McCann. Can't really go wrong with either.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 22, 2008 at 12:51 PM
Do the Pirates have any additional talent behindthe plate they may look to trade for some pitching?
Posted by: RunningRed | December 22, 2008 at 01:14 PM
WHO'S THE FASTEST GUY IN THE MAJORS?
Posted by: MLBloggin | December 22, 2008 at 01:16 PM
Still waiting for a response to my craving for a signed Ryan Doumit card.
Posted by: Teetz1 | December 22, 2008 at 01:20 PM
After looking over the numbers, I might actually pick Mauer too. I think I fall in love with McCann's power a little bit...but Mauer is just awesome as well. McCann is a year younger I believe, but both are still 26 and under? Thats sick.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 01:23 PM
This is actually a good signing for the Pirates. They have some good young talent down there that they need to lock up. The comparison to the Rays is not that ridiculous. The difference is that although noone saw the Rays busting out like they did this year, you can see that their front office was doing a good job of locking up their young talented players.
Noone has any reason to believe that the Pirates front office will be smart enough to do that. Maybe this is the first step in the right direction.
Posted by: Chris | December 22, 2008 at 01:24 PM
This is why I don't think the Red Sox will ultimately be doing a deal with Texas. If they're going to get their farm system decimated anyway, there are many young catchers out there who are better than anything Texas has. And there's no such thing as untouchable, for the right price.
Posted by: Little Bear | December 22, 2008 at 01:30 PM
"The comparison to the Rays is not that ridiculous."
yes, yes it is.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 01:30 PM
Bravesfan,
No, I definitely was not implying that Doumit had the third-best season of any catcher in the game. I'm well aware McCann was above him, but McCann ranked a full 40 points higher, so I wouldn't even say Doumit was on the same level last year.
My point in saying that was merely to provide some context for how strong Doumit's season was.
Doumit had a very nice season, but my intention was never to say he had the third-best offensive season among catchers, because he didn't.
Sorry if you interpreted it that way.
Posted by: Steve Adams | December 22, 2008 at 01:31 PM
Duncaroo,
The comparison is not to say that they are going to go to the WS, but that they have a good deal of young talent, and like the Rays they need to start locking them into contracts. Signing Doumit is a good start, now they need to start up again with McLouth.
Posted by: Chris | December 22, 2008 at 01:33 PM
I know what you are getting at Chris, but in order to be the Rays, not only do they have to lock up players that they have, they need to be drafting a little more like the rays have. The Pirates don't have one young David Price or Evan Longoria in their system...
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 01:39 PM
They don't have a David Price (god i wish they did). They do have Andrew McCutchen though. McCutchen is an elite prospect.
Posted by: BucSox | December 22, 2008 at 01:53 PM
He is a good prospect, but lets see him pay dividends in the majors. They need more than him though...but I'll admit, if they could sign McLouth long term as well, it would be a start. I just think that the Rays are the blueprint for the Bucs, but to compare them on any note, other than having little money to spends, is silly.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 02:24 PM
I would argue that David Price hasn't proved anything in the Majors he had some good innings of relief but he hasn't rreally had a crack at starting so I don't see how he has really any much more than McCutchen.
Posted by: BucSox | December 22, 2008 at 03:48 PM
isn't pedro alvarez our evan longoria?
Posted by: yokedog22 | December 22, 2008 at 03:53 PM
GOTTA LOVE IT...
Doumit looked genuinely moved by the whole event, and here are a couple of snippets of what he had to say ...
His first words at the podium: "Wow. I can't relate to you what I feel right now. But I also know that, with a contract like this comes high expectations. And no one has higher expectations of me than I do. I believe in myself. I know what type of player I can be, and I know what type of player the fans expect. It's my job and my duty as a Pittsburgh Pirate to give those fans everything I have."
About the 2009 team: "You're either on board or you aren't. There are certain guys on this team who are on board. Everyone knows what it takes to win, and everyone wants to win. We're going to right this ship, and it's going to start with day one of spring training. ... I truly believe there are going to be some special things happening. If our pitchers show up like I've seen them pitch, if Adam LaRoche can find some holes in April and May, if Jack and Freddy do what they're capable of, and Nate ... enough said ... I saw some great things out of Brandon Moss. ... I'm excited. I can't wait. If I had my way, spring training would start tomorrow."
WE WILL.
Posted by: BuccoNation | December 22, 2008 at 04:21 PM
Aduncaroo: I never said the Pirates are the next Rays, but what I said is they should lock up their young talent like the Rays did to build a nucleus. As one fan pointed out the NL Central is a very poachable division. The Cubs are on top right now, but have a weak farm system and a number of aging players. The Brewers have alot of young hitters but almost no pitching. The Cards and the Astros are each have some great players but also have a lot of questions. And the Reds are in the same boat as the Pirates. The point is 2 years from now the Central could be up for grabs and if the Pirates make some smart moves and a few more good drafts they could contend. I'm not saying they will but I will say they could.
Also remember that Hunington has completely revamped the farm system with a very good draft and solid trades. This is not the cheap Pirate team of the past, they look like they will make solid baseball moves. In a couple of years they could be dangerous.
Posted by: Steveo26 | December 22, 2008 at 04:22 PM
i still thinks its BS that we have to play in a division of 6 teams, we're destined to never make it to the playoffs. put us or someone else in the al west. that is Horse sh*t that 4 teams are in a division
Posted by: yokedog22 | December 22, 2008 at 04:26 PM
Price is the concensus #1 prospect in the nation, and has proved he could do it at the major league level as well.
McCutchen is good...but this is a guy that slugged .398 last year and has never had a full season where he OPSed above .800. I like the guy, and he is a good all around player...but I don't think he is on the same level as Price. His patience at the plate is awesome though.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 22, 2008 at 05:02 PM
Pittsburgh doesn't have the wealth of young pitching talent which was so essential to the Rays success.
It's too bad Littlefield set this team back so much further with his terrible drafts of "signability" college arms, but we will be on the right track soon. We could've had Tim Lincecum but took Brad Lincoln. Then DL gave us the ultimate parting gift of Matt Morris and Daniel Moskos instead of Wieters, who if we drafted him, we'd probably be cashing in on Doumit this season or moving him to 1B and trading Adam LaRoche. It's criminal what he did to this proud franchise.

The Pirates have passed on so many good draft picks...
Hamels, Lincecum, Wieters, etc.
DANG! Come on!
I'm an Astros fan, but I really hope the Pirates do something like the Rays did.
Posted by: averybear11 | December 24, 2008 at 12:36 AM
I hate Dave Littlefield. Why did it take the Pirates so long to fire him? If he had been fired sooner, we might've drafted some of those names averybear11 mentioned and could've been competitive by now.
