J.J. Putz Rumors: Wednesday

2:04pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Cardinals offered Rick Ankiel and a prospect for Putz.  The Tigers remain interested as well.

9:23am: According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, "the Tigers' interest in acquiring closer J.J. Putz from Seattle appears stronger than ever."  Morosi says the Mariners insist the Tigers include Jeff Larish and Matt Joyce in a deal.  If the Ms acquire Larish and are convinced he can play third base, they may be motivated to shop Adrian Beltre.  Morosi adds that Brewers and Cardinals have also inquired on Putz.

Brian Fuentes still seems too pricey for Detroit, and Kerry Wood is apparently off the board.  Morosi says the Tigers have "mild interest" in Baltimore's George SherrillJoe Beimel remains their top choice among lefty relievers, but the Tigers have yet to offer a contract.

id love the reds to trade for beltre and move edwin out to left.

I really, really, really don't think the Tigers should give up Matt Joyce for Putz. Nor should they give up Rick Porcello.

But that's just me.

I'd like to see the Tigers get Fuentes, he's a good closer. Putz would be okay if they don't give up too much and are sure that he's healthy. Putz seems much more of a risk to me. Fuentes is safer and just as good imo.

When healthy, Putz is better than Fuentes. 2007 obviously displays this. Putz's health is a big question, as he is much more injury-prone that Fuentes. Fuentes will likely also cost more in 2009 and 2010.

What about Jeff Larish, Clete Thomas, and Fernando Rodney for Putz?

I don't think Seattle would want anything to do with Rodney.

They want young, affordable talent such as Larrish and/or Joyce.

I hope we only would have to give up one of those guys though.

Oh, and they would not trade one of the top prospects in baseball (Porcello) for a fairly decent closer whose been hurt for the past year. Granted, Putz was lights out before last years injuries, but it won't happen.

DD would have to be swept off his feet by an offer to even consider moving Porcello

Ankiel for Putz would be sweet for the Cards, but I would like Ankiel to be traded for a nice middle infielder.

It would be typical for the Mariners to let Putz go in a 3-1 deal. I'm not sure why GM's let above average players go for mediocre ones, you can't win that way. At least if they got Ankiel, they'd have a middle of the order hitter who could net them draft picks when he becomes a FA.

And Putz would look GREAT in a Cards uniform.

Wasn't it Rosenthal who said the Cards were serious contenders for Burnett? We all know how that turned out.

I would rather trade Ank for a starter... Sonnanstine? I know this doesn't matter to anyone else but he has sentimental value to the Cards...

I thought Larish or Joyce, and another player like Marcus Thames or Brent Clevlen would be enough for Putz. But, trading Larish and Joyce is a high price, though still probably a necessary trade to make considering the Tigers holes in their bullpen. Even if Detroit gets Putz, they still need at least one to two more relievers.

"The Tigers are interested in Putz and the Cardinals have offered center fielder Rick Ankiel and a prospect, according to a rival general manager."

This question is going to come across as synical, but I am serious, if someone could take the time to answer.

How would a rival GM know that the Cards made any kind of trade offer to the Mariners?

Joyce or Ankiel, kind of a tough decision but a good one for the Mariners. I am not sure who'd id rather have.

Larish and Clete Thomas and Rodney ? hmmm, definetly a much lesser package, don't know why they'd go for that if they could get Ankiel or Joyce.

Whats the chances Ankiel will be a type A freeagent next off season ?

Seems like the Cards really want to move an OF. Is Rasmus ready?

next to 0, i would think... he spent a lot of time on the DL this year and played only in August and September in 07

"Seems like the Cards really want to move an OF. Is Rasmus ready?"
------
I'm not sure if he's ready yet or not, but Mozeliak has been talking like he really wants to give Rasmus a chance to make the team out of ST this season..

The Cardinals want to trade a center fielder with an OPS of .843 last year PLUS a prospect for a closer who saved 15 of 23 attempts and made two trips to the DL? What am I missing?

I think the M's would rather have the tigers package, since they are rebuilding, and Ankiel is only under team control for another season. Its makes the most sense to get players who dont have that kind of service time, unless you intent to compete next year, which the M's shouldn't.

Why is there a person that has the same exact username as me?? Why anyone but a Mariners fan would be happy to hear Ankiel being traded Putz is beyond me. All the Cardinals fans will be loving it when Rasmus is hitting .175 in June. We will have our own little version of Felix Pie. Smooth like butter in the field, looks 80 years old at the plate.

The M's are fools if they don't deal Putz for Ankiel and a prospect. Save a ton of money, upgrade the offense and defense all for a guy who plays the most overrated position in baseball.

Putz is a very good reliever... but if the money was even Ankiel provides much more for that team than Putz does. Putz can't save any games if they don't have a lead.

Take the saved money and put it towards a veteran bullpen arm with closer experience if they don't want to put Morrow back there. Brandon Lyon? Maybe even able to afford Fuentes?

If Rasmus is not ready you put Schumaker in CF and Mather/Duncan/Barton in LF.

That said, I don't believe the Cardinals seriously made that offer. I would be excited to have Putz going into '09, he's only on the hook for one year at $5 million which, if you're going to pay for a veteran closer, is better than other options out there. But I would prefer we go into the season and give Perez a chance to prove himself. There's always Trevor Hoffman, as well.

Thats the thing... We aren't rebuilding... We haven't traded our top players for loads of prospects in return. The Cardinals have a hole at shortstop, and have been interested in Yuniesky Betancourt in the past. YuBet+Putz for Rasmus. That makes sense.

I can't believe you would say this if you had seen him. He's an excellent hitter, nothing suggests otherwise.

We already traded for Khalil Greene, who at least will be the all-glove-no-hit shortstop Betancourt is with the added potential for more. Also, a top 10 prospect in all of baseball for one year of a closer who spent time on the DL last year and wasn't terribly effective when healthy, and Betancourt, does not make sense.

Yeah there's 0 chance of the Cardinals pulling the trigger on that one. I'm not sure Betancourt is worth anything at all.

I would like to see Fuentes in a Tigers uniform too, but I doubt they're willing to pay what he asks.

And Seattle taking 2 LHH prospects? Detroit could afford the loss of one but not both.

yeah we (meaning the M's) are like in this floating like state where we aren't exactly rebuilding by sending out our players for groups of young talent, but at the same time we're trying to kind of fool our fans into thinking that we're competing, which makes no sense at all with the Angels easily better than us and Oakland pretty much going to be better when it's all said and done at the end of next season.

With that being said I have never liked Putz, even in his all-star season. I definitely wouldn't mind trading him for Ankiel and a prospect. I for one won't be fooled if this deal gets done thinking we can compete however because of a lot of other areas we lack in..

And yeah Betancourt is aggravating to watch at the plate every time he steps up because it is pretty much a 3 strike out, if he even lets it get that far, but he is very good defensively even now after putting on some weight.

Putz is close to going to the Mets in a three-team trad with the Indians being the third team.

I'm starting to get sick of the NY teams. CC and AJ in the Bronx, and JJ and Frankie in Flushing? Ugh.

"I think the M's would rather have the tigers package, since they are rebuilding"

No we're not.
