"Jack Zduriencik will always remember Russell Branyan as his first free agent signing."
Every time Branyan hits a jack with his bat, Jack will get half a stock.

If Gaudin is non-tendered, I might vomit. I really hope Hendry isn't as clueless as Sully apparently is...

By the way, even as a Cubs fan, the Viva el birdos read is a good one. Very informative and detailed.

Chad Gaudin should not be non-tendered. Seriously.

I am wondering if the Cubs non tender Gaudin as well. The BP is a concern for this team and I hope Hendry can get a good BP arm before ST. Ofcourse, they HAD one...

Gaudin IS a good bullpen arm...the only way I seem them doing this is if his injury from the end of last year is more serious that anyone thought...

That was a great post by Viva el birdos.
I bet teams are going to look back on their arb decisions with major regrets. I don't buy for one second that a player like Dunn will end up taking a one year deal.
The Angels and a few other teams played their cards right and will reap the benefits for offering arb to some of their borderline FA's.

i gotta vent about sully for a moment...he's absolutely awful. half the time he's a grumpy little twat, the other half he's lazy. his end of the year mailbag, after the playoff debacle, was to tell all cubs fans to take down all their cubs paraphernalia, not read about baseball on the internet, basically to completely forget about baseball altogether until next year. good idea paul. that way, you have a built in excuse for NOT tracking down sources and rumors, which you have succeeded in doing so far this offseason with flying colors. i check the trib first thing every morning, before i check foxsports or this site or anything else, and sully almost always has nothing. the sun-times does. sometimes. mark gonzales for the white sox does, sometimes, and for the same paper as sully. but rosenthal and the sun-times ALWAYS have the scoop before sully. he's the first one i read, but the LAST one to actually have the story. he doesn't even give updates on the sale of the cubs. absolutely ridiculous.

i will also throw up if gaudin is non-tendered. especially if marshall gets traded. harden needs his own personal long man, which is why gaudin was acquired in the first place.

Obviously non tendering Gaudin would be because of his injury last year. Maybe he rushed back or had to alter his motion. Either way, he did not pitch the same as before the injury. Hopefully he recovered and comes back to pitch well. This Cub BP needs a guy like him.
100, I agree with your assesment.

The Lee Jenkins article on Teixeira is excellent, and explains why Tex will never sign with the Red Sox.
Posted by: A | December 04, 2008 at 01:18 PM
A,
I respectfully disagree. There is zero information in Lee Jenkins' article to support your conclusion that Teixeira "will never sign with the Red Sox." I can only infer that you base your argument on the idea that Teixeira will hold the current Red Sox GM and the current Red Sox ownership responsible for the perceived slights of the past Red Sox GM and the past Red Sox ownership. The two new regimes are like day and night: players WANT to come to Boston now. I take everything Boras says with a grain of salt, but I don't think he is posturing when he says in the article, "He's [Teixeira's] not gregarious or emotional in his decision making. He is very businesslike, very much about information." I don't know if Tex will sign in Boston, but I highly doubt that Duquette and the previous ownership group will be the determining factors. Like every signing, it will be about dollars, years, and family considerations, which probably makes the Red Sox, among others, a contender for his services.

elguapo,
I agree with you regarding Tex signing with the Sox. The article CLEARLY states that he is a businessman and a businessman never shuts the door on a possiblity. He WILL consider all options. I hope he does come to Boston, but only time will tell after the businessman makes a decision.

Can anyone remind me what non-tendered means and what it means for Gaudin?
Posted by: uww1 | December 04, 2008 at 04:41 PM
Tim has a post on non-tender players a few threads down.

The Cub's already made one mistake by not getting Woody for a one year deal (greatly reduces risk with good chance of a good year). Letting Gaudin go for nothing would be even more stupid. He would be lucky to get 3 million in arb and, if healthy, would be a better, and cheaper, 5th starter than Marquis. Even as a long man/6th starter he would be worth it.

elguapo, what I was referring to is Teixeira has class. The Red Sox sadly do not.
Posted by: A | December 04, 2008 at 08:23 PM
A,
Any basis for that comment or are you just tossing bombs?
The Red Sox organization, owned by John Henry (who players love) and GM'd by Theo Epstein (who players respect) and managed by Terry Francona (who players love and respect) is "classless?"
Why, because you say so, because Dan Duquette had no people skills, or for some other reason?

I have no idea why anyone would think that there is no chance of Tex signing with the Sox. I consider it almost guaranteed that he will. Theo and Tito like him a lot. When Theo sees something e likes he finds a way to get it. And for the record Tex didn't turn even turn down the Sox's offer when he was drafted because he had anything against Duquette or the Sox organization. He turned it down to go to college. They drafted him out of high school. I have heard all kinds of rumors that he would really much rather play for a contending team not a rebuilding team. So that right there rules out Baltimore and Washington. I have also heard rumors that despite what Boras says Tex is really unhappy with the little contact he has had from the Yanks. That leaves the Sox and Angels that I know of. I have heard no other legitimate names mentioned. I have no idea what Boras is talking about with ten teams. And he is a liar and truth twister anyway. So between the two teams have we not heard over and over that he would like to be close to his home in Maryland. I'm not a geography professor or anything but I am pretty sure Boston is closer to Maryland than Anaheim. I have no idea where this notion of players not wanting to come to Boston comes from. Boston has the most dedicated fans in the world. Think about it we stood behind a team that hadn't won a championship in 86 years. Trust me Theo wants this guy and if Tex's biggest concern is the contract length and money, Theo will have his man within two weeks. Shortly after the winter meetings Tex wil be wearing a Sox jersey. And it will be the best Christmas present I could ask for. This kid is either Manny that can switch hit and play defense or Lowell times two minus 7 years of age and with no history of injuries depending on how you look at it.
