« Manuel Gets Contract Extension | Main | Orioles Rumors: Garland, Izturis, Ohman »
7:52pm: Scott Miller says the Orioles are sending $3MM to the Reds, not $1MM as previously reported. Kubatko says it's $2MM.
4:34pm: MLB.com's Mark Sheldon adds that the Orioles will receive prospects Brandon Waring and Justin Turner and will send $1MM to the Reds.
2:39pm: Rosenthal says an agreement has been reached to send Hernandez to Cincy for Freel and two prospects. The Orioles are sending over $1MM, so the deal requires approval of the commissioner's office. I can see how this might work out for both clubs; each player had worn out his welcome.
By the way, Tom Haudricourt rejects the idea that the Brewers were interested.
2:29pm: The Orioles would send cash to Cincy to offset Hernandez's salary. This deal might be announced soon. Walt Jocketty said "we'll have something" later when questioned.
1:56pm: John Perrotto believes a Hernandez for Freel deal will be announced today.
TUESDAY, 12:30pm: Seems that a deal for Hernandez is close, though Roch Kubatko says the Brewers jumped into the mix. Kubatko still thinks Hernandez will be traded to the Reds.
MONDAY, 9:37pm: Walt Jocketty slyly lifted his eyebrows when asked about this rumor, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.
7:11pm: Rosenthal says the Reds would also kick in a prospect in this deal, but want the O's to pay a significant portion of Hernandez's salary.
6:01pm: John Fay of the Cincy Enquirer says he's heard the Hernandez for Freel rumor from both sides.
12:21pm: According to Roch Kubatko of MASN Online, one of the teams interested in catcher Ramon Hernandez would like to swap contracts. The team would send the Orioles a utility guy who can play the infield and outfield.
Kubatko goes on to note that the Reds and Astros are looking for catching. Connecting the dots, Kubatko may have been talking about Ryan Freel above. Hernandez has $9MM left on his contract, while Freel has $4MM.

Could it be Julio Lugo?
Posted by: jimmywallaby | December 08, 2008 at 12:24 PM
I agree, I think its Julio Lugo. Similar salaries this year but Lugo has one more year after this. Lugo did play the outfield in his time with Los Angeles.
Posted by: Mark | December 08, 2008 at 12:27 PM
and doesnt the O's need a SS?
Posted by: Larsen101 | December 08, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Freel or wigington is my prediction. If they get freel then maybe you could put him a t 2nd or 3rd when melvin or b-rob leave. Even though lugo is a good choice.
Posted by: Dj 26 | December 08, 2008 at 12:30 PM
I don't think they'd get Lugo to be a utility guy. I agree with Ryan Freel. Which is good cause I like him. He has Grit!
Posted by: XD23 | December 08, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Freel would run threw a wall for you if he has too lol
Posted by: Larsen101 | December 08, 2008 at 12:32 PM
let it be freel!
Posted by: roguesaw | December 08, 2008 at 12:36 PM
i like the idea of hernandez coming to cincy for freel...if the O's need a SS, we can send A Gon too...but the O's would probably have to throw in a prospect at that point. but i think that the reds and O's match up well for something to get done.
Posted by: coltholt | December 08, 2008 at 12:39 PM
i think the reds would throw IN a prospect if they took A-Gon from us as well.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 08, 2008 at 12:43 PM
I don't think it will be Lugo.
I doubt the red sox want anything to do with Ramon. They played against him about 18 times last year. I'm sure they saw things they didn't like.
Posted by: Glen Burnie Joe | December 08, 2008 at 12:46 PM
hah, was just posting about this in another section.
Personally I still like Hernandez as part of the 3 team Peavy deal, as the Padres are said to be looking for a Veteran catcher as well.
Perhaps Cubs send Marquis/Cedeno for Hernandez.
then move Hernandez/$$/Vitters and whomever else they must for Peavy.
Padres end up with a Veteran catcher not costing more then Peavy (after salary is eaten by the Cubs) and a slew of prospects.
O's end up with same payroll but get a decent young utility IF and an arm that can toss a few innings
Cubs get their man.
Although I admit the Freel thing makes the most sense and is a heck of a lot easier.
I don't forsee the Red Sox/O's trading with each other though although that would be a solid swap for them.
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 08, 2008 at 12:50 PM
if it's Freel I'd be pretty happy about that deal. The Reds need a 2nd catcher and have plenty of guys that serve the same role as Freel for much cheaper...plus it opens a spot for Rosales who i think deserves a chance
Posted by: bowlindj | December 08, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Based on the article and salaries, it looks like Wiggington would give the Os the most flexibility. Freel would give the Os immediate coverage at 2B if 2B Roberts is dealt. What are their gloves like?
The salary dump part is a little imbalanced but the Os might have to give some cash to even it out.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Tim,
Anyone know if the reds still have the offer on the table to Rhodes now that Weathers has accepted arbitration and Lincoln has resigned? DIdn't solve the lefty, but they have some young guys that could come up now that they have to base of their pen set.
Posted by: coltholt | December 08, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Red Sox might like that he hit .327/ .400/ .557 vs NY or .326/ .354/ .465 vs TB.
Posted by: XD23 | December 08, 2008 at 12:55 PM
SO if the Reds can get a new starting C for Freel...
that means EE and more for Sanchez and Winn
AND
Dye for Bailey is still in effect.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 08, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Gmblng
what are you doing at short/3rd?
Posted by: coltholt | December 08, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Just for the record, I don't think the Orioles are that interested in Marquis. Why I only keep seeing his name linked to the Os on this site says more about the Cubs fans' wishes than reality.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 01:05 PM
if you want a signing of furcal on top, leaves the only question at 3rd. Could be filled for under 5, otherwise play Rosales/Kepp. Not a terrible hole to have. Solid rotation. Harang, Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, Sanchez
Owings in long relief as a go to pinch hitter
Posted by: coltholt | December 08, 2008 at 01:05 PM
I'd hate to see the Reds trade 6 years of Bailey who i think is still gonna be pretty good, for 1 maybe 2 years of a 35 year old outfielder who just doesn't impress me all that much...if they're gonna trade for an outfielder make it a young guy under team control for years to come and with tons of potential such as Delmon Young
Posted by: bowlindj | December 08, 2008 at 01:05 PM
XD23 - Good point. Maybe I just don't want to see him at OPACY any more. Ever.
Posted by: Glen Burnie Joe | December 08, 2008 at 01:06 PM
Ramon Hernandez to the Mets for Luis Castillo?
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 08, 2008 at 01:40 PM
METZFAN22 I dont think that would work for the either team
Posted by: fearthechant | December 08, 2008 at 02:04 PM
freel is an absolute ballplayer. freel plays with about 10x more effort than ramon and tejada combined.
he might be a bit overpaid at 7 million for 2 years but hes not as bad of a ripoff has ramon hernandez.
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 08, 2008 at 02:05 PM
It's almost like both these teams are doing this deal moreso because they don't want the player they are trading, than because they want the player they are trading for.
Hernandez is expensive and has had two poor years in a row, while at this point Freel doesn't appear to be much more than a utility guy that can get on base and use his speed once in a while.
I would say that deal is better for Baltimore though, unless they are kicking in money, because they already practically have a ready replacement in Matt Wieters, and Freel could be a potentially useful bench guy for them.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 08, 2008 at 06:07 PM
If it is Freel, that's awesome.
If it isn't, just throw in a sandwich with whoever it is.
As long as that worthless piece of crap isn't in an O's uniform ever again.
Posted by: chrisdragon | December 08, 2008 at 06:11 PM
...if they're gonna trade for an outfielder make it a young guy under team control for years to come and with tons of potential such as Delmon Young
While the Sky's the Limit for Bailey I think that Young has demonstrated more than Bailey has so far. That's probably a place to start, but it would probably require more than just Bailey.
Posted by: mm | December 08, 2008 at 06:18 PM
i can barely contain my excitement. ramon hernandez may finally leave!!! and the o's may dump him for more than a couple peanuts!!! a really nice utility guy AND a prospect?!?! this is almost too good to be true!!!
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 08, 2008 at 07:18 PM
I think this move is a prelude to the Dye-Bailey move.
Posted by: Chunk23 | December 08, 2008 at 07:30 PM
Nevermind that, Hernandez makes too much money.
Posted by: Chunk23 | December 08, 2008 at 07:38 PM
Scribble,
I can only speak for the Os but, I think the reason why the Os might want to shed payroll with Ramon has to do with where that salary sits. It sits in the C spot. That happens to be the same position their super-prospect, Wieters, plays. Shedding 7.5M at catcher opens up salary to sign a pitcher, and, prepares for a more flexible player to hold that slot until Matt Wieters arrives. At the same time, the critical thing about Freel to keep an eye on is that he also plays 2B. Having him on the roster also opens up the possibility to trade Roberts. This deal would do multiple things for the team. It would be a great move.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 07:41 PM
Hey O's fans, why the hatred for Hernandez? Is he a jerk? Or is it just the salary and declining performance?
Posted by: Dan | December 08, 2008 at 07:49 PM
Apparently Walt Jocketty hates rumors and likes to shoot down anything floating around. What a killjoy.
Posted by: Scott Boras | December 08, 2008 at 09:39 PM
As a Reds fan I can honestly say that Freel is not a utility player, he's a corner OF that is willing to play IF positions. His style of play also leads him to spend considerable time on the DL and he's also proven time and time again that he isn't a starter. Honestly I think every team has someone that is comparable to Freel in the minors, and there was probably a semi decent chance that the Reds would have cut him before the start of the season. Hernandez is a mediocre to average catcher at best any more but at least he's something that the Reds need.
Posted by: schellis | December 08, 2008 at 09:42 PM
If Omar Minaya were to get in on this, I suppose the idea would be to swap Luis Castillo for Ramon Hernandez, move Brian Schneider to the Red Sox for prospects and sign Orlando Hudson.
The problem is, Luis Castillo is essentially at the level of a replacement player-- second basemen with questionable range who slug .305 are not exactly tradeable commodities. I don't think anyone's taking Castillo off of Omar's hands any time soon (or ever).
Posted by: JK47 | December 08, 2008 at 09:45 PM
A lot of people have a lot of reasons for wanting to move Hernandez. He was kinda lazy. Didn't block the plate or run out balls. I like him for fantasy baseball. He hits well with RISP (.322 last 3 years combines) and I think he slowed up a bit because he has logged a lot of games the last 3 seasons(383). He missed the 1st month of '07 due to hamstring injuries but still caught 106 games.
My biggest reason is Wieters. O's should be able to bring him up when they think he is ready and not have him blocked by a high priced player.
Posted by: XD23 | December 08, 2008 at 09:50 PM
Jocketty slyly raised his eyebrows? Hot damn, stop the presses!
Posted by: exitfare | December 08, 2008 at 09:52 PM
Dan M: Hernandez is fat, overpaid, and his abilities are declining. It would be nice not to have him blocking (pun intended) Weiters this year.
Plus, we could use that cash for something more important, like a pitcher or a SS that plays above little league level.
Posted by: exitfare | December 08, 2008 at 09:56 PM
The biggest reason to move Ramon is 9M reasons that is blocking the path to a kid named Wieters. Simple as that.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Another point here is that Freel isn't your typical slap-and-run guy. You don't find many .350+ OBP guys who have no power to speak of. He'll pop a few here and there but, he's a "Put the ball in play and RUN" type of bat. He's not useless. The Os have a LFer who they'd want to platoon, Luke Scott. Between Scott at LF spelled by Freel against tough LHPs, it's a strong platoon.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 10:49 PM
The bigger question is how quick is Wieters up when Ramon leaves? Could he possibly break camp with Baltimore?
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 12:36 PM
As a Reds fan, the only problem I have with Freel being traded is it probably means Jerry Hairston Jr is resigned.
Sure, JHJ had a CAREER year last year but he was also injured, just like previous years. JHJ is a Baker Boy and, just like Corey Patterson last year, will be played no matter what.
So, just like Patterson last year, when JHJ is hitting .220 and is in a prolonged slump, Baker will still run him out there and probably bat him lead off when there are other, better options available.
Posted by: ctownboy | December 09, 2008 at 01:00 PM
I call shenanigans on the Brewers inquiring on Ramon. The article says the Crew view him as an upgrade over Kendall.
First Kendall played 151 games at catcher last year. Plus Melvin and Yost (before he got fired) loved the way Kendall called the games for our young pitching crew. Last, Kendall is cheaper.
Why a small market team like the Crew would want to add a $9M backup catcher is beyond me.
Posted by: crudbucket36 | December 09, 2008 at 01:32 PM
CubbyFan: I don't see Weiters breaking camp with the O's. I imagine Zaun will be signed, which will make me dread the games that Dempsey calls even more.
Posted by: exitfare | December 09, 2008 at 01:38 PM
Ctown - your disdain for the Reds is well documented at this point. Maybe go for a different club?
Posted by: davidmp2 | December 09, 2008 at 01:46 PM
"I imagine Zaun will be signed, which will make me dread the games that Dempsey calls even more."
Posted by: exitfare | December 09, 2008 at 01:38 PM
For those unfamiliar, Gregg Zaun is the newphew of former Oriole catcher and current broadcaster Rick Dempsey.
Posted by: PS314 | December 09, 2008 at 01:55 PM
Quick!!! Andy MacPhail!!! Make this deal before the reds realize ramon isnt worth more than peanuts!!!
also, i gotta agree with exitfare. i love dempsey as a player but i despise him as a commentator and when he called the o's-jays games last year, it was painful...
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 09, 2008 at 02:09 PM
Nice to see Jocketty trying to actively fill holes rather than hoping his March signings produce (see Krivsky, Wayne:Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston Jr.)
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | December 09, 2008 at 02:09 PM
For those Orioles fans lambasting Ramon, the Reds catching at the end of last year consisted of Javy Valentin and Ryan Hanigan. Reds needed someone, Os wanted to get rid of Ramon bad, Reds wanted to get rid of Freel bad, so it works.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | December 09, 2008 at 02:11 PM
I like Harriston, I do not think he'll be an everyday player. I think him and Dickerson might platoon for a little, but eventually Stubbs will win it. I think Stubbs is prone for big things, ever since he adjusted his swings, hes cut down on his strikeouts by 15% and raised his batting average about .40 points. he has speed and is a tremendous defender.
Reds will find a slugging right-fielder.
unless the Reds get Beltre...which he could put up massive numbers in a contract year in GABP
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 09, 2008 at 02:14 PM
I don't understand why the Reds/Reds fans want Freel gone so bad. His defense is certainly spastic and sometimes very bad. Too many times we've had to see him dive fast first and completely miss the ball. But his offense has been pretty good when healthy.I would've/would like to see him as a utility or in a platoon.
I just don't see Hernandez as an upgrade to Ryan Hanigan offensively. Also find it odd considering pretty much all the young pitchers like throwing to Hanigan and even Bronson has developed a good connection with Hanigan after Ross was let go.
Posted by: BankStreetGrounds | December 09, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Freel needed to go b/c he can't stay healthy and is fairly redundant with Hopper on the roster. As for Hernandez and Hanigan, results will dictate who starts. If Hernandez is good, it's a decent move that will help improve the team. If he sucks, then we'll see what Hanigan can do in year two. Trying to shore up their weaknesses can't do anything but help em.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | December 09, 2008 at 02:23 PM
"Hey O's fans, why the hatred for Hernandez? Is he a jerk? Or is it just the salary and declining performance?"
He was unbelievably lazy behind the plate last year. There were quite a few PBs and WPs that could have been prevented if he had made an effort.
Wieters will start the year in AAA, but he'll be up by June at the latest.
Posted by: wickedwitch | December 09, 2008 at 02:29 PM
yall do understand though that even with ramons past couple year if he were a free agent this year he would have qualified as a type a. so barring an injury in the upcoming season and he produces like he has he would more than likely still be a type a free agent. just a little something some people might pass over when judging the deal
Posted by: redsfan | December 09, 2008 at 02:33 PM
I heard an O's fan talk about Hernandez...maybe some others can agree or disagree...
The O's pitching staff was young and inexpereienced, leading to bigger leads and good jumps, so Hernandez's throwing out % is skewed....and the same applies for the PB/WP on defense....
I think if he tries he can have a good year for the Reds
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 09, 2008 at 02:40 PM
thats a good point redsfan
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 09, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Hahahahahaha how did Andy get 3 players for Ramon Hernandez. So awesome.
Posted by: dan_the_man | December 09, 2008 at 02:43 PM
"Freel and two prospects"
This could get interesting.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Sweet. The Matt Wieters era in Camden Yards has officially begun.
Yet another reason why I pity Pirate fans.
Posted by: Patrick | December 09, 2008 at 02:44 PM
I wouldn't say he wore out his welcome at all really.
It's more to do with Wieters. Having a huge contract at C prevents us from easily demoting Ramon to backup duty, and, even consider adding Teixeira.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 09, 2008 at 02:45 PM
It is sort of nuts how Andy MacPhail has managed to squeeze extra guys in every deal for the Os.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 09, 2008 at 02:46 PM
Redsfan- The only way the reds are going to see the fruits of type A status is if they offer arbitration and he declines. The chances of that are very slim. In arbitration Ramon would make at least the 9 million he is set to make in 2010, if not more. Furthermore, no team is going to give up a first rounder for Ramon. The Reds would be crazy to offer arbitration to him, and Ramon even crazier to decline it.
Posted by: Birdfan01 | December 09, 2008 at 02:48 PM
how does a guy like freel wear out his welcome in cincy?...is this rosenthal splurging more eronious reports?...as an o's fan, i'm happy with freel, he plays a style of ball that trembley and the fans appreciate.
Posted by: ooooGUTHRIEfan | December 09, 2008 at 02:48 PM
"It is sort of nuts how Andy MacPhail has managed to squeeze extra guys in every deal for the Os."
Which is why I think it's stupid that he got stuck with the nickname Andy McFail... I can't really remember if that was Cubs or Os fans that dubbed him that...
He's done a pretty good job at Baltimore, moreso since he works for a guy that just has to dub his fingers in everything his management team does, lol.
Posted by: Patrick | December 09, 2008 at 02:49 PM
i am floored that macphail was able to get three (three!) players for ramon.
anybody know who the prospects are?
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 09, 2008 at 02:55 PM
"Which is why I think it's stupid that he got stuck with the nickname Andy McFail... I can't really remember if that was Cubs or Os fans that dubbed him that..."
It was Cubs fans, because he was (rightfully) asking the world for Roberts. You start off negotiations high, then go down from there. Not start off saying you'll give up your good players for peanuts.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 02:56 PM
How in the world did Freel wear out his welcome you moronic wanna be reds fan. How do you stay quiet when your stupid excuse for a manager plays Corey Patterson everyday? Freel would have been worth more if Dusty would have played him more. This guy gave his body to the game, hustled like Rose. What are we getting in return...another Paul Bako with a slightly better arm..but not much of a hitter. I sure do like picking up 9 million dollar back up catchers. This is why the Reds lose year after year. I support Jocketty but this one will come back to haunt him.
Posted by: Robert | December 09, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Robert, i respectfully think youre wrong.
Freel is always getting hurt, and we need a slugger and a leadoff hitter.
his 4 million dollars is so bloated. but we need a catcher, and we are ACTUALLY spending about 3.5 million on a catcher. He'll be a type a FA is offered Arb if we decline...so thats a good draft pick.
he has a good arm, his % was thrown off due to inexperienced pitching.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 09, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Depending on who the other two prospects are, I don't mind this deal. Though a defensively minded catcher Hernandez is not. Anyone got an update on Hernandez' WARP?
Posted by: davidmp2 | December 09, 2008 at 02:59 PM
1st freel was hurt for a big part of last year thats why he didnt play.
2nd o's fan getting pumped about the prospects i wouldnt get too exited it wont be any top notch prospects. one name i have heard is chris heisey
Posted by: redsfan | December 09, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Freel, like King Griffey Junior, wore out his welcome because of the size of his salary and his inability to stay healthy, on the field and productive.
By his own admission, Freel has had at 10 concussions in his lifetime. So, since concussions are easier to get and more severe each time you sustain one, all it takes is just one more and his baseball career is over.
With the way Freel plays with reckless abandon, it isn't hard to see how this could very easily happen.
Posted by: ctownboy | December 09, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Well if Rosenthal says it must be true
Posted by: exitfare | December 09, 2008 at 03:01 PM
Robert - Freel played 123 games the past two seasons. It has to do with his reckless play earning him the following stints on the DL:
November 06, 2008 Removed from 60-day DL
July 31, 2008 Transferred to 60-day DL
June 04, 2008 Placed on 15-day DL (Hamstring surgery, right knee)
September 26, 2007 Transferred to 60-day DL
August 07, 2007 Placed on 15-day DL (Torn cartilage, right knee)
July 03, 2007 Recalled from minors rehab
July 03, 2007 Removed from 15-day DL
June 24, 2007 Sent to minors for rehabilitation
May 29, 2007 Placed on 15-day DL (Head/neck contusions)

# of teams who might be interested in Varitek just got decreased by 1 again.
I wonder how Boras will spin this one as being good for his client.
Kind of suprising that of the very few moves made at the winter meetings, two have been for catchers and none have involved the Red Sox.
I like the move for both teams though; and not sure how much the O's save on Payroll here but every penny they do save I imagine is being put to extending Markakis.
If the O's get any prospects of value I'd be suprised; but either way I like the move.
Thats 2 catchers dealt, and very little talent exchanged for either of them so far.
But yeah, some team will pay Varitek $10+ per year for multiple years.ahahhahaah.
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 09, 2008 at 03:08 PM
I feel a little better about now that you talked me out of the clock tower, but I don't think Hernandez is remotely the catcher we need with the pitching we are trying to develop. We keep running guys in there to catch every year and our pitchers will all end up being a fraction of what they could have been. My point is that we could have the next aces in volquez and cueto but we may never find out because in Cincy they always look for stop gaps and are happy about fielding mediocre players in role playing positions. This will never get us to the playoffs.
Posted by: Robert | December 09, 2008 at 03:12 PM
I think saying Ramon Hernandez is Paul Bako is a big misguided.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 03:14 PM
Robert,
As a Reds fan I wasn't quiet. I didn't like it that Baker was hired and said so from teh very beginning. I wanted Pete M to come back as Reds Manager.
Over the last 20 years, the only time the Reds have been successful is when they have had hard ass, disciplinarians as Manager. Guys like Lou Piniella, Davey Johnson, Jack McKeon and Pete M. Guys who had one set of rules for ALL players and who didn't take it lightly when a player loafed. Guys who wanted good, fundamental baseball to be palyed and who would have practices on off days if he saw that that wasn't happening.
With Ray Knight, Bob Boone, Dave Miley, Jerry Narron and now, Toothpick Baker, the Reds have had player's Managers. Guys who do not have one set of rules for everyone, who do not get on star players for loafing and who do not have extra practices to amke sure that the fundamentals are executed correctly.
I didn't like it when Baker came in and said that the Reds NEEDED another Center Fielder even though they already had Freel and Hopper on the team and under contract with Bruce watiing in the Minors.
I didn't sit quietly when Toothpick continued to bat Corey (Automatic Out) Pattersuck in the lead off position, KGJ in the number three hole ("out of respect") and Joey Votto in the number seven spot.
I was saying that somebody else should be batting lead off, Votto should be batting in the number three spot with KGJ moved down in the order and Pattersuck batting at least seventh.
I was also saying that David Ross should NOT have been cut and that Paul Bako should have.
Finally, I kept asking WHY Bako was being allowed to catch when it was September, the Reds were 20 Games out of first place and Hanigan was up and NEEDED to be played as much as possible to see if he really WAS capable of being the starting Catcher in 2009.

Freel was banished to the DL because he was out of options and Dusty blackballed him. Freel wasn't going to play for us obviously but I don't like getting a used up veteren back stop when we should be developing for the future. IE..Hannigan should have started.

Wow.
Ramon is a solid bat. I would say his defensive skills are adequate but he's niether got a gun nor a defensive specialist. His biggest contribution is gamecalling and power (which never got on track last season due to health).
But to get a player we can use, free up a spot for Wieters, and squeeze in two C prospects is a great return on what might have been a simple salary dump. I'm impressed with MacPhail for Baltimore. So far his best moves have been the trades. Not a stinker in the bunch so far.

I wonder if the Freel acquisition could be the precursor to a Roberts trade?

If Freel is your everday second baseman you are in for one rude awakening.

"If Freel is your everday second baseman you are in for one rude awakening."
I think being an Orioles fan is one rude awakening in itself. They suck.
"I wonder if the Freel acquisition could be the precursor to a Roberts trade?"
I wondered this same thing too, considering that the outfield is set with Markakis, Jones and Scott, and they have a solid fourth outfielder in Montanez and a near ready prospect in Reimold. Freel doesn't really seem to have a spot on the Orioles unless Roberts or a different player is moved.
Maybe a team like the Indians or White Sox has been talking up Roberts with Baltimore and it hasn't gotten leaked. Shapiro and KW are generally pretty good and keeping information from the media, although MacPhail not so much.

Seems like a lot for Ramon, but I guess "slightly below average" hitting is "good" for a catcher. Anyone know how he is defensively?
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | December 09, 2008 at 04:41 PM
Freel is a solid super-utility guy though... Plus, he's a walking highlight reel with all his balls-to-the-wall flying catches into the stands and stuff.

Where do these prospects rat e with BA ?
Posted by: kinsler5 | December 09, 2008 at 04:50 PM
finehamabounds,
asking how ramon hernandez is defensively is like asking how good burger king is health wise. in other words, hernandez is a horrible defensive catcher.
instead of getting on his knees and blocking balls, he usually only attempted (and did not succeed) to backhand it. The created way too many passed balls and wild pitchers which were rarely the pitchers fault.
also, ramon would never block the plate and take a hit to get an out.
his pitch selection was so predictable that, according to roch kubatko, pitchers would guess the pitch count in the dugout along with ramon.

both waring and turner are outside the reds top 20 prospects according to john sickels. turner could be a ok utility guy/ backup 2nd baseman. waring plays 3rd . defense is ok and he has some power but his k/bb ratio is HORRIBLE
Posted by: redsfan | December 09, 2008 at 04:59 PM
Haring put up some good #'s (.813 ops) in a-ball but he is about to turn 23 and did strike out 156 times in 441 at bats...which doesn't bode well as the a/aa jump is considered the most difficult. Turner is 24 and put up a pretty decent line (.791 ops) for a second baseman in double-a...could be a decent replacement if Roberts is moved. Either way, pretty good move for the O's.
Posted by: Jared78 | December 09, 2008 at 04:59 PM
Turner is a second baseman who has hit at every level and plays average defense while Waring is a power hitting third baseman with suspect defense...overall decent prospects. Waring got a lot of praise his first year in the minors
Posted by: bowlindj | December 09, 2008 at 05:00 PM
Wow. These are solid C+ guys. Waring has legit power at 3B. He hit 20+ the last few seasons and currently is 22 yrs old. Fringy defense. Last year he played well at AAA. In 2008 he was rated in the Reds Top 20 at around 12-15. Turner might have a little more upside but is really just a C+ prospect too. The knock on both might be their strikeout totals. But, to get 2 actual prospects (i.e. not 25-27 yr old organizational players) who might contribute in some form in what could have been (should have been) a throw away trade is very interesting. If I were a Reds fan, I'd be glad to get rid of Freel but I would be slightly upset to give up some positional depth.
Roch Kubatko worte today that the pitchers on the Orioles started getting upset with Ramon because they thought his pitch selections has gotten really predictable. His defense is decent but not great. The biggest thing that might get some fans upset about him is that he's perceived as a Dogger who doesn't hustle or chase after foul pops.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 09, 2008 at 05:04 PM
both were expendable from the reds standpoints with phillips at 2nd for awhile. and the reds have ee , frazier , soto , francisco who all have higher ceilings than waring which will be fighting for the 3rd base spot in the next year or 2
Posted by: redsfan | December 09, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Correction: Waring played in lower A ball, not AAA. Sorry bout that.

"I wonder if the Freel acquisition could be the precursor to a Roberts trade? "
If Freel were to see playing time aside from util at all, it would be at 3rd or a tryout at ss. No way we would downgrade from brob to freel at 2nd. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of freel, but not in place of roberts

You forgot to mention he drops a lot of popups too Base.

Well, based on Reds fans reports here, maybe we don't think of Freel as a possible replacement to Roberts. Though this fits in line with a Twins-like strategy of finding versatile athletic hungry type of players to fill out the bench. The Twins always seem to have 4 Ryan Freel types on their bench in any given year. The Orioles bench has been a little lame in recent years. What we lacked last season was a decent righty to spell Luke Scott in LF, and, suitable pinch-hitters late in a game.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 09, 2008 at 05:15 PM
Either way, the greatest part of this trade for the Orioles is that it sets the stage for the eventual emergence of Matt Wieters. We may sign Greg Zaun to hold the spot until he's ready (maybe by July?).

I'm surprised that the Orioles actually managed to trade Hernandez and land value in return.
Not only did they reduce payroll by replacing Hernandez' $9M with Freel's $4M, but they also landed a couple of reasonably solid prospects who actually could become good players one day.
I think this is a great deal for MacPhail. Ya know, sometimes he takes forever to make moves, but like the Bedard move I think he's done a very nice job here.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 09, 2008 at 05:55 PM
well first off Waring never even sniffed AAA, he finished the year in low A Dayton, and secondly Turner struck out half as much as Warings 150+ last year. both are decent prospects though with their own +/-'s

"If Freel is your everday second baseman you are in for one rude awakening."
The object of rebuilding is to let your youth develop, and collect prospects. Now that the Orioles are doing it right, the next step is to trade Roberts. The O's aren't going to contend in that division next year. Let Tillman, Matsuz, Arrietta, et all. develop and collect prospects by trading Roberts for a nice haul.
It's perfectly fine for Freel to start at 2B for a rebuilding team.

A corner OF that is always injured (sorry Freel is not a IF lacks the range for 2B and 3B and would be horrible at SS) Even in the OF he's below average because he gets poor reads on balls, but he looks like a gold glover because he makes the circus catches...most of which a good OF would make without leaving his feet. He can really only be counted on for about 50 games, his body just doesn't hold up to his style of play. Right now I would say he's a solid pinch runner and thats about it.
The two minor leaguers look like they'll be nothing more then bench types or career minor leaguers.
In my opinion the deal was basically get half of Ramon's contract off the books and open a slot for Wieters. The players the Reds sent will have minimal impact.
