1:21am: Morosi says the second pitching prospect is indeed Melo.
12:12am: Morosi says an agreement has been reached, and the second prospect is a pitcher. There's speculation that prospect could be Carlos Melo, as he fits Rosenthal's description.
11:27pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Tigers acquired Laird for Moscoso and a second prospect. The second prospect "is a 17-year-old who spent last season in the Dominican Summer League." Could it be shortstops Samuel Ortiz or Domingo Gonzales? Pitchers Rayni Guichardo or Carlos Melo? The deal will be announced Monday. Laird, a Scott Boras client, is under team control through 2010.
Rosenthal adds that the Tigers are considering Adam Everett and Nick Punto as shortstop options.
9:26pm: According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, "The Tigers and Texas Rangers have made significant progress toward a trade that would send catcher Gerald Laird to Detroit and pitching prospect Guillermo Moscoso to the Rangers." It's not known whether the Tigers would include anyone else.
Baseball America ranks Moscoso tenth among Tigers prospects, noting shoulder woes but suggesting a high ceiling. They say he could end up a #3 or #4 starter. He's drawn some comparisons to Jair Jurrjens.

I've been thinking for a while that the only way this deal could get done would be Laird for Moscoso, considering he's really the only pitching prospect that makes this deal logical. He gives Texas a near MLB ready arm that should be able to be a solid 4/5 guy, which helps to balance out some of their more high potential/high risk guys like Feliz, Holland, Main and Beaven.

haha since the jurrjens trade worked so well the first time

and I care so little about this rumor it is not even funny...

Interesting how the Rangers dealing a catcher effectively ups the price on the others they have.

PLEASE, take Punto Detroit. Pleeeease...

Steal for the Rangers. Good show.

I wonder who the second prospect is? Moscoso was someone they probably should have kept. But I like this pick-up for the Tigers if this deal actually happened. Should be a solid catcher to help with Ryan over the next couple years.

im just glad us tigers fans can rest easy tonight...we have our catcher. a Laird/Ryan combo behind the plate will be special in 2009.
Lets go get us some relievers and a shortstop tommorow, boys.

Why are you excited about a career .255/.306/.383 catcher?
Posted by: TheNatural | December 07, 2008 at 11:53 PM
Id bet on the prospect being Carlos Melo. 17 in the DSL with a good fastball and developing secondary pitches. 11 K/9. Type of kid the Rangers would focus on these days.

"a Laird/Ryan combo behind the plate will be special in 2009"
LOL

good move for the tiggers i say!

"Why are you excited about a career .255/.306/.383 catcher?"
Prob cause the Tigers fans don't want to wake up one morning and see that their team was the foolish one that gave Varitek a 3 year deal for 30 mil.
This is a solid move, mostly because they could have made a worse one.
Posted by: BaseBallz | December 08, 2008 at 12:24 AM
The Tigers really need pitching, why would they trade a promising prospect for a crappy catcher? Ugh.
Posted by: Will Smiff | December 08, 2008 at 12:30 AM
I'm just glad the Reds didn't end up trading Bailey for him, now hopefully Dye will be traded somewhere soon so I don't have to worry about that one either!
Posted by: bowlindj | December 08, 2008 at 12:38 AM
And its Carlos Melo.
I win, thank you and goodnight

That would be me.

Sad to see Moscoso go, but at least one question for the lineup has been answered.
Posted by: Calriver | December 08, 2008 at 01:13 AM
that's a good start to pick up Laird to fill the catcher spot -- he ain't too bad
pretty good pick up in my mind
Posted by: I Like Baseball | December 08, 2008 at 01:38 AM
Woo hoo!
As a Reds fan, I was afraid this re-tread would end up in Cincy. Now I can have a sigh of relief.
Hopefully Texas would be willing to part with Teagarden or Salty.
Posted by: Noggy | December 08, 2008 at 01:40 AM
Laird should be a solid catcher next year, and he did hit .299 away from Texas, so he may do better in Detroit where it doesnt get as humid as it does in Texas.
Next on the list for the Tigers is probably going to be JJ Putz. They are interested in him, and Seattle has been looking for an outfielder to replace Ibanez, so they will probably trade Joyce in a package for him, and then deal Larish to the Pirates for Wilson.
Posted by: hitman79 | December 08, 2008 at 01:48 AM
hahahaha i don't think they'll move Saltalamacchia
he has more potential than Teagarden and he's younger
they do need a back up though too
maybe they're willing to part with Ramirez? XD
Posted by: I Like Baseball | December 08, 2008 at 01:49 AM
It gets pretty damn humid in Detroit though too
Posted by: I Like Baseball | December 08, 2008 at 01:49 AM
Oh god please don't trade Larish for Wilson.
Posted by: Will Smiff | December 08, 2008 at 02:12 AM
because Texas is a bad place for a hitter?
While I am interested as to why the Tigers trading pitching, at least its for a younger player as opposed to Renteria, that deal was bad at the time and looks worse.
Texas need pitching, they pretty much have to trade either Salty or Teagarden this off-season.
Posted by: quintjs | December 08, 2008 at 03:30 AM
I like this deal for the Tigers. Sure Moscoso is a decent pitcher, but he is maturing too slowly. Also he isn't really that big of a deal now that Porcello and Perry are in the system.

I was really hoping Detroit was going to overpay for Varitek.
Looks like that pleasure will be Bostons again. I just hope they know they will be bidding against themselves so hopefully they don't pull a Steinbrenner.
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 08, 2008 at 07:19 AM
I hope that Varitek signs elsewhere, and when Boston comes calling to Daniels for Salty, he can simply say to him, "Buchholtz or no deal." Now that Laird is gone, Salty's value goes up, since there's now no reason for Texas to trade him.

uh

good move for texas. they get rid of a whiny player who has shown he can not produce in a full season. they open up the spot for salty and teag to share the duties. laird does really good when he is spitting time, but when he is given the job he either struggles or gets complacent not sure which. also don't try putting your backup in more than once a week or he will cry that he has earned the right to be an everyday player.

this sucks for the red sox.
Posted by: EWS1532 | December 08, 2008 at 09:09 AM
It's going to be a great offseason for Tigers. The first of many major moves has been done. Now they will work on adding Wilson, Punto, or Everett as SS. And then concentrate on Trevor Hoffman in the pen. There is no team that will add as many slightly above replacement level players as the Tigers this offseason.
I apologize for the sarcasm. But it really doesn't seem like the Tigers are setting their sights high but they have very little money to spend on FA's and a weak farm system.
Posted by: kab21 | December 08, 2008 at 09:23 AM
Sure, the Rangers have less of a need to deal a catcher to the Red Sox, but from everything I've heard, they've never been interested in Laird. The Rangers still have 3 catching prospects and very little in the way of pitching. I also read that more catching is available than most would think (that was a quote from Theo). So, the last thing the Sox are going to do here is panic. A catcher is off the board, but one they never considered.
I will be very upset if the Sox deal Buchholz for a catcher.
Posted by: Papelboner | December 08, 2008 at 09:35 AM
I'd rather the Sox overpay for Varitek for another year than trade Buchholz for a catcher, that's how highly I think of the kid.
Posted by: Papelboner | December 08, 2008 at 09:36 AM
"Now that Laird is gone, Salty's value goes up, since there's now no reason for Texas to trade him. "
Why? I think the value goes down. Boston can get someone like Montero for a fringe AA guy and a rookie leaguer. No need to give up a prospect of any substance.

What does this mean for Brandon Inge?
Posted by: MPM | December 08, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Inge is the tigers 3rd baseman in 2009.
i doubt he lasts until the trading deadline though...we should have a Larish/Hessman combo at 3b.
Posted by: Quantumleaper(GoTigers) | December 08, 2008 at 10:35 AM
My contention about Salty's value going up is that the Rangers have solved their logjam problem, and now they have a place for Salty to play at the ML level all season so he can get some precious experience. Just when he got going last year, Laird got healthy and started complaining about having to split time, and the manager stopped playing Salty regularly.
So anyway, I don't think Texas really wants or needs to trade Salty. They do have a lack of ML ready pitching, but they have a number of premium kids coming up - at least 2 guys who are comparable to Buchholtz. So JD can now say to Theo - "Sorry - no deal unless you give us X for Salty." I would also expect that if Boston has pegged Salty as the guy that they definitely want to bring in and groom for the long haul, they aren't going to be too happy to see JD talking with the Yankees about Salty.
So I don't see how this does anything but strengthen the Rangers position.

I thought Carlos Guillen is the 3rd baseman? Does this put Inge back in a 'super utility' role?
Posted by: MPM | December 08, 2008 at 10:45 AM
"I'd rather the Sox overpay for Varitek for another year than trade Buchholz for a catcher, that's how highly I think of the kid."
Papelboner - I think you are exactly right here - it would be crazy for Theo to pull the trigger on this kind of risky deal. This is why I don't think you guys will get Salty if he's traded. All it's going to take is for Salty to get on track and hit a bunch of homers - which he will do in Arlington eventually - and people will be a lot more motivated to give up something of real value for him. For now - I don't see him being moved unless it's one of those mind-blowing deals that don't seem to happen much anymore.
Posted by: J the Dizzolla | December 08, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Inge can't hit at all anymore, I seriously doubt that he holds that job.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 08, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Sorry to beat the proverbial dead horse, but I just saw this in a recent update:
"Speier talked to an official who believes the Rangers would have to be overwhelmed to trade a second catcher."
That was my point exactly. Unless someone like Buchholtz is available, no way Texas moves Salty now.
