Six Suitors For Randy Johnson

Jack Magruder of the East Valley Tribune has the scoop on Randy Johnson's suitors.  He says the Giants, Dodgers, Brewers, A's, Rangers, and Cubs have expressed interest in the 45 year-old lefty.

Johnson wants to play for a contender, and also wants to reach 300 wins and 5,000 strikeouts.  He could get the five wins he needs in the first half, but it'll take a full, excellent season for him to rack up 211 strikeouts.  Johnson's agent Alan Nero expects the market for his client to get moving once some of the other top free agent starters sign.

i dont consider the giants a contender or the a's or the rangers and maybe the brewers are maybe not

out of those teams the cubs seem like the most likely to contend, but he's from walnut creek (near oakland) so i think if the A's load up with more players he'll sign there.

thats some research right there

it is probably cubs and dodgers, giants havent signed anyone that can single handelly change the franchise, and if the dodgers keep their team together from last yr, johnson could be a big part. but my only thing, dont the cubs have 6 starters, looking at peavy AND looking at Johnson? seems like TOO much pitching

I've always liked watching the old man pitch. At 45 he can still bring it at 93-95 mph. I think the A's and Rangers would absolutely be a good fit. They both need pitching and he would be great for the A's young kids to learn from. He brings a lot of nastiness to the mound. I think Nolan would love to have him with in Texas too.

And what's great as well is if the A's are not contending I'm sure he might be willing to be dealt to a contender in July and the A's can turn him into a mid-level prospect.

Out of those teams i can see the Dodgers,A's,and Rangers getting him...The Rangers could really use him,he'd be a huge upgrade from what they have now.

I think the Dodgers would be a great git too, especially sine they're losing Lowe and Penny. He could add some spirit to them as well.

If I were Randy I'd stick to the NL. It's amazing that he can still bring the heat at his age. The Cubs or Dodger would probably be best since they have bullpens.

I'm surprised the Jays aren't in on him. He'd be the #2 they need for a year while Marcum heals up, at a better price tag than Burnett (because of his age, even if it hasn't made him ineffective yet), and no long term risk.

This is the first Dodgers Rumor that I like!

A one year flyer on Johnson makes a lot more sense than just about anything else out there.

With Frank McCout broke and not adding much to the current team.

Padres and Rockies are shedding payroll as fast as possible.

D-Backs are firing staff and not adding payroll.

The Giants might end being the favorite in the division with two or three good additions.

Add C.C. and Johnson to their top three young pitchers.

One of Dunn or Burrell to play a corner OF spot or even 1B would make the Giants the favorites.

Even just C.C. and Dunn would give them a shot.

Agree with you 100% Yanksfan78, the guy can still bring it to some degree and is still as nasty as most pitchers are in mid 30's. The guy is a better option, than say a 1/2 season of a Schilling would be and he can teach pitchers also.

I also do not see why a team like the Yankees would not want to bring him in as a back of the rotation starter either maybe?

"I also do not see why a team like the Yankees would not want to bring him in as a back of the rotation starter either maybe?"

The question is, why WOULD they? He's 45 years old, we don't need anymore seniors. He wasn't all that good with the Yankees and his postseason numbers with the Yanks were horrid. He's also an injury prone player now that he's older and you cannot rely on him.

He is still good enough for NL, any AL team that even thinks twice are plain stupid he would be lit up.

Reason suggested RJ for a inexpensive Yankee signee, is have you actually paid attention to the Yankee potential starters for 2009? it is a scary lot and not for opposing batters either. Hughes and Kennedy could use some tutelage from someone with a vast knowledge of pitching, such as RJ, Wang is recovering from a serious leg injury and do not know how he will perform, Chamberlain may still end up in the BP, no FA's are signed yet.. So yes, RJ for 5, maybe even 6 million would be a great deal for them.

Put it this way Spieg7, as a Red Sox fan for 1 of the several teams that follow, would be delighted for them to sign him to a 1 year and 5-6 million dollar contract for starting depth, something the Yankees do not do.. Get starting pitcher depth and it bit the Yanks last year did it not?

Would like to see the marlins get him also, only they would not be willing/able to pay him that kind of money, though his presence would do wonders for the young pitching staff.

If the Yanks fail to sign CC but manage to sign one of the other big four: Burnett, Sheets, Lowe and Perez (uggg my tummy hurts just thinking of that) then IMO I wouldn't mind bringing him back for one more go. People rip Cashman for bringing him in the first time but I think he did a great job for us. He gave us two seasons of 17 wins, 200+ innings, credibility with a #1 ace and a certain swagger. In his last year his 17 wins came with a plus 5.00 era and he wasn't effective in the post-season but in 09 he wouldn't be looked at as our savior but instead a back of the rotation guy. Even though they are completely different pitchers he might be a good influence for Joba and Hughes. If CC falls thru wouldn't mind seeing a rotation with:

Wang
Sheets/Burnett/Lowe/Perez
Pettite
Joba
Johnson
Hughes

However, that being said, JOhnson couldn't stand the media and the media hated Johnson as well. His first day in NY for a press conference he shoved a camera man and cursed him out on the streets...haha... I Love this guy!!!

LETS GO RANGERS LETS SIGN RANDY JOHNSON

Does anyone realize that RJ was paid $16M last year and turned down $8M to stay with the D'backs this year? What do you expect him to be paid? He is not going to be "inexpensive".

I'd love to see him in SF. One year 8mm.

A

I thought the D-backs offered him 4-6M.

SF will get him lol

And his salary last year was $10 mil not 16 mil. His 2yr/26 mil extension called for a $12 mil signing bonus, $4m in 07 and $10 mil in 08.

If Randy could deliver 170 innings, 12 wins and an era under 4.00 he would be a steal at 8 mil. He would be great for a team with a good bullpen. He can give you 6 quality innings and probably 25-30 starts if his back is ok. If he gets hurt what are you out..8 mil?

If he wants to play for a contender why is he considering the Gnats or A's? those teams aren't contenders! The A's maybe the Gnats are garbage....even with the addition of Renteria or maybe Burrell/Dunn.He should sign with the Dodgers cause there going to probabley bring back Manny and Furcal...then all they need is a solid pitcher or 2
