« Mariners Re-Sign Jamie Burke | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Bradley, Burrell, Dunn »
1:32pm: Heyman now has the Yanks in "deep discussions" with Tex; he says they've stepped up their efforts in recent hours.
1:02pm: Jon Heyman says the Yankees are still in it - they're "talking seriously with Teixeira's people." He agrees that a decision could be made as soon as this afternoon.
12:42pm: Danny Knobler believes it's down to the Nationals and Red Sox. His sources say Teixeira hasn't decided yet but is expected to make up his mind today.
12:08pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has the Nationals at nine years, $180MM and the Red Sox at eight years and around $170MM.
10:55am: Chico Harlan of the Washington Post talked to a Nationals spokesman who is not aware of any plans for an announcement today regarding Teixeira. WEEI's Alex Speier notes that it is not a lock that Teixeira signs by Christmas.
10:28am: Buster Olney and Peter Gammons say Teixeira's decision is "seemingly imminent." The journalists say the Orioles' negotiations for Tex "appear dormant." They suggest the Yankees are lurking in case Boras offers Teixeira to them at a discount (or perhaps just to drive up the price for Boston).
10:20am: According to Thom Loverro of the Washington Times, "there will be an announcement today regarding the future of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira." Loverro says there are strong indications the Red Sox will be the victor, though it's unclear whether those indications are based on inside information.
We learned from Roch Kubatko yesterday evening that the Nationals upped their bid to $178-184MM over eight years (Jim Williams says $178-183MM).

Well if it was the RedSox, it wouldnt exactly be a big surprise.

Good, get it over with so the rest of the market will finally take shape.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 23, 2008 at 10:37 AM
If Boston does pull this out, I'll be pretty impressed by how they handled Boras, as long as they didn't go above $180-185MM.

GOD, please do NOT let the Sox sign him. I know the Yanks are a long shot, but it would be nice. If not, c'mon Nats. NO SOX, NO WAY, NO HOW!

Posted by: OfficeSupplyGeek | December 23, 2008 at 10:44 AM
What I don't get is, yeah it's nice the Nats upped their offer, but it's nothing to blow anyone out of the offer. If they really wanted Teix, they should know it should be 8yr/$188-190 or 9yr/$195. D@mn shame he's going to Boston.
The Red Sox have become what they have hated: an evil empire.
Posted by: HammondsIsAStud | December 23, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Yankees are the only ones that have the money & brains to pull it off!!
Posted by: alan | December 23, 2008 at 10:46 AM
for no particularly good reason (other than the insane amount of money), i have a feeling he'll sign with the nationals. this has taken such a laboriously long time, i just get the feeling boras is trying to squeeze every last penny out of it, and i really don't think the red sox are the highest bidder.
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 23, 2008 at 10:46 AM
I'd love to see him sign with the Nationals and I'm a Braves fan. I just think it would be great for one of the smaller market teams to finally put their money on the line and for a big name FA to take a chance on a rebuilding team and help them become a better product. I mean, it isn't like the Nationals wont be a contender in the 8-10 years he will be there and I don't think this is taking money over winning either like A-Rod going to the Rangers way back when. They have Zimmerman, Dukes, Milledge, Flores and they have made strides with their drafting and farm system in general. To me, the Red Sox aren't a whole lot different than the Yankees in their spending (other than they seem to be just a bit smarter with their money) so since the Braves don't seem at all interested in jumping into the mix I'd like to see him go to the Nationals and hope that takes care of at least one of the teams that struggle to compete with the big boys.
Posted by: jfish26101 | December 23, 2008 at 10:48 AM
HammondIsaStud, are you a Yankees fan? Because that Evil Empire stuff is pretty funny considering the Burnett/Sabathia signings.

A nation waits.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 23, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Well it's been reported the Nats may be willing to go 10 years which should push the offer over 200 mill. I think the Nats are doing everything they can to get it done, it's up to Tex now.

Posted by: stuntin' is a habit | December 23, 2008 at 10:53 AM
No Smog, I don't like the Yankees. But the Sawx are hypocrites and have become what they have always hated.
First kicked out Millar to the curb after everything he did for you, now Lowell.
I think it'd me more wise for the Sox to go get Lowe or Sheets.
Posted by: HammondsIsAStud | December 23, 2008 at 10:54 AM
i agree with ya brah anG3L z27 your right im a yanks fan but the nationals shoudl jsut lock him up so the yankees can go steal manny
Posted by: stuntin' is a habit | December 23, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I hope it is the Yankees so they can sign ALL the best free agents. Perhaps a 2 year/$46M deal for Manny to be the 4th outfielder will be next? Then they can trade for Peavy. Wouldn't it be way cool if the AL All Star team was the Yankees?
Posted by: Brad426 | December 23, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I have a weird feeling it's Washington.
We shall see. :)
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 23, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Heard the Yanks were also trying to sign Jesus in time for Christmas.
Posted by: OmegaMan | December 23, 2008 at 10:57 AM
C'mon, people, it's not the Yanks. I don't think it's the Red Sox either. I still believe it's the O's or perhaps the Nationals. One thing is for certain, he won't leave a dime on the table. The team doesn't have to be a winner, as long as it has the highest bid. With the Nats expected to go 9 or even 10 years, don't be surprised if they are the Texas Rangers of this year like when A-Rod surprised everyone by signing with them before. In fact, Teixeira is a lot like A-Rod in that he's a very good ballplayer who is aloof, not a leader certainly, and has a huge ego.

Good stuff. I'm not sure Jesus would win a starting spot, though.
Posted by: Brad426 | December 23, 2008 at 10:58 AM
i wouldnt say teixiera has a huge ego whatsoever have u even ever heard an interview of him he sounds very well informed and credible unlike all of the unclassy bearded players in boston
Posted by: stuntin' is a habit | December 23, 2008 at 10:59 AM
"Good stuff. I'm not sure Jesus would win a starting spot, though."
Yankee fans would think that Melky was still better. ;)
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Brad426, as a Cub fan, having lots of all-stars doesn't guarantee anything. Last year, the Cubs had the most all-stars they've ever had, won 97 games and what good did it do them in the playoffs? Not a damn thing. Players like A-Rod and Tex may be great players, but teams win with gamers, guys with heart.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Your problem is the Sox kicking MILLAR "to the curb"? That's a new one... Youk came up through the organization and obviously earned his spot, and the Sox had to take Lowell as part of the package for Beckett... which you may remember wasn't exactly an unfair trade based on what Florida got back.
Posted by: Rich | December 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM
seeemingly iminent hmmmmmm....YANKEESS
Posted by: stuntin' is a habit | December 23, 2008 at 11:01 AM
rememberthecoop... not that I have met him personally, but I certainly never got the impression that Tex is aloof or has a huge ego (and I live in Dallas when he was a Ranger and I live in Atlanta now). He always came across as a regular guy that was well like by his teammates. The "not a leader" part I think I agree with, though.
Posted by: Brad426 | December 23, 2008 at 11:01 AM
"First kicked out Millar to the curb after everything he did for you, now Lowell."
So you're saying the Red Sox should keep players around that want more money than they're worth? Since when was paying for past performance a good business decision?
The Red Sox replaced Millar with a home grown Youk who has put up better numbers than Millar for less money. There is no guarantee that Lowell is healthy, so they're going after the best player on the market that plays GG defense, is a switch hitter and is younger. Please tell me what is wrong with what the Red Sox are doing.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 23, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Youk was drafted by the Sox buddy. Right about Lowell though.

I'm so tired of all the Yankee haters out there. IF and this is a BIG IF the Yanks come in and offer Tex a big contract, they're using their greatest resource...their money. Everyone hates on the Yanks just because they go out and get who they want with the cash they have. If any other team had the revenue the Yanks do, they would do the same thing. For the record, I think offering CC a 7 year contract was ridiculous, and if he opts out, 3/69 is a GREAT deal. Furthermore, AJ @ 5/82.5 was AWFUL. They gave him a contract for more years than he's had healthy. But, I digress. The Yanks GENUINELY have a need for a legit first basemen, which they haven't had since Tino retired in '05. I really hope they sign him, but it's looking more and more like the Nats will win. As far as the Sox fans clamoring for him, I believe I saw somewhere that Tex's wife HATES flying and they wanted to be somewhere close to home, which, I believe, is Maryland. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Posted by: YanksFanWB | December 23, 2008 at 11:03 AM
I think its the Nationals. Everyone always assumes the big market team is going to sign a free agent and it drives me crazy because in every single rumor the Yankees and Red Sox have to be included. The Red Sox already have one of the best infields in baseball and Lars Anderson coming up will help it tremendously in the future so i dont really see a fit. But something tells me the Nationals are going to get Mark Teixeira because they need a face to their franchise to attract fans and they need the offense badly to support the young pitchers.

Agreed. I was being sarcastic. I like seeing teams like the Rockies and Rays get to the Series, but in a way it prevents there ever being a change in the screwed up, non-level playing field that baseball has become because people can always point to a team with a relatively low payroll that has done well.

he was actually traded as a compensary pick to the red sox nice try though

YanksFanWB... I applaud the Yankees for always trying to field a winner. It's not them I hate, it's the system. I don't hate the playa, I hate the game.
Posted by: Brad426 | December 23, 2008 at 11:05 AM
"Players like A-Rod and Tex may be great players, but teams win with gamers, guys with heart."
No. Teams win with good players. The Cubs lost not because they had the All-Stars (not that being an All Star matters since they are voted by fans. Hell, Fukudome was an AS), but because they went against a Dodger pitching staff that was well prepared, was full of dominant right handed starters and were able to neutralize the Cubs right handed batters.
If you can afford A-Rod and Teix, you take them over any "gamer" any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Brad426....I couldn't agree more.
Posted by: YanksFanWB | December 23, 2008 at 11:07 AM
The Red Sox cleared $28M just from Manny and Schilling coming off the books, but going out and actually spending some of the revenue they bring in for Tex turns them into the Evil Empire? 4th in the league last year in team salary, nearly $70 mill behind the Yankees, with homegrown guys like Paps, Lester, Lowrie, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Youk on the team.
Do they spend money? Yes, but just because you think the Red Sox are turning into the Evil Empire doesn't mean it's actually happening. The Sox will have signed exactly ONE player this offseaon IF they get Tex.

Posted by: OmegaMan | December 23, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Do you even know what that means? Regardless of how the Sox got that particular slot the fact is they drafted Youkilis in 2001, round 8.
Posted by: Rich | December 23, 2008 at 11:08 AM
cubbyfan 23 he was drafted by the yankees and traded to the red sox go look it up sometime before your team wins another championship....i guess i wont get an answer for another 100 years

Also, Brad426....I thought it might have been, but I couldn't remember if it was AJ or if I heard something about Tex...in any event, I'm just tired of the drama already. Boras is a genius for always pulling this crap, but enough is enough.
Posted by: YanksFanWB | December 23, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Tex would have to be out of his mind to go to the nationals. the sox def landed him. this is the second time they have caught boras with his parents down lol
Posted by: glen_quagmire | December 23, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Brad, maybe "huge ego" is a bit unfair. But I do think "aloof" fits him well. First off, a lot of these guys have egos, it's what makes them so good. They have to believe in themselves and have confidence. And especially with the stars and they way they are treated, always being told how great they are from grade school, through high school and college, etc., one can't help but get a big head. I just don't think Tex fits in the mold of a Pedroia, or a Youkilis or a Craig Biggio or any guy you can think of that play to kill, only care about winning and always put the team first. Tex just doesn't seem like that kind of guy. Which is not to say that I wouldn't want him. You need talent to win. I'm just saying you need the other kind of guys too, or you won't win. For example, you need the guy that behind the scenes will pull a player to the side if he's not hustling and give him an earful. For some reason, I just don't see Tex ever doing something like that. And for this kind of a financial committment, it would be nice if he was that kind of guy.

Stuntin Is A Habit
WTF has you been smoking bro. Did you like forget to take your medicine this morning or are you just slow boy? The Red Sox drafted Youkillis in the 8th round he was not a COMPENSATORY (compensary isnt even a word) pick that was traded to them. He was drafted, home grown, and brought up through the Red Sox system. Your retaliation post might be one of the funniest but dumbest ones i have ever seen on these threads.
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 23, 2008 at 11:10 AM
"cubbyfan 23 he was drafted by the yankees and traded to the red sox go look it up sometime before your team wins another championship....i guess i wont get an answer for another 100 years"
You are an idiot. You cannot trade someone who was just drafted. This is not football.
He was never drafted by New York. The Red Sox took him in the 8th round and he started the year in their system. For him to even be traded, the Yankees would have had to have named him as a Player to be Named Later in a deal with Boston, which means he would have started the year in with New York farm team. That did not happen.
Thanks, try again.

If anybody paid more than $20 million a year for him they got a bad deal. I like Tex as much as, or more than, anyone but he is not a $22.5 million player and that is what 8/180 works out to.
Just because Tori Hunter signed a bad contract for $18 million doesn't somehow make Tex worth $5 million more than a bad contract.
8/180 is the kind of deal RS fans would skewer the Yankees for doing, but somehow they are here HOPING they get him for 8/180. Tex isn't THAT great.
Plus, if you are the RS, you have to trade Lowell and eat some of his contract (add another $4-5 million for each of the next 2 years) and you end up with a wash defensively (Tex is better than Youk at 1B and Youk is not as good as Lowell at 3B), a slight increase in offense (Tex over Lowell) and $26-30 million more in payroll.
He just isn't worth that.

I have nothing against the nationals but if Tex does sign with them after having offers from 3 of the best teams in baseball it would be a bit disappointing. It would finally prove that even the best players would rather have a huge payday than be on a winning team. Kind of a sad day in baseball if this does happen.

Kevin Youkilis was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2001 draft. He was not a compensatory sandwich pick, and he was never in the Yankees orginization.

Does anyone think that the Yankees will hold off on pursuing Tex because they want to wait for Pujol's?
They can get the bat from Manny for the 2-3 years until Pujol's is available. Thoughts?

"Teams win with good players"
