Crasnick On Abreu, Eckstein, Bloomquist, Lowry

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has a bunch of new info.

  • The Braves' interest in Bobby Abreu is described as "lukewarm at best."  And he'd have to be a huge bargain for the Mets to get involved.  Abreu's agent has his work cut out for him.
  • Two middle infield possibilities for the Royals: David Eckstein and Willie Bloomquist.  The Royals also considered Jerry Hairston Jr., but are concerned with his health record.  Also, Dayton Moore continues to deal with payroll limitations.
  • The Rangers are "keeping an eye on" Giants starters Noah Lowry and Jonathan Sanchez.  Lowry had arthroscopic elbow surgery in September.

Why just lukewarm? I've said Abreu fits the bill for what Atlanta needs since the Winter Meetings! Dang it Frank get off your a** and make a move already!!! (And NO, Javier Vazquez doesn't count!)

It would be typical cheap loser Rangers to look at Lowry. On the other hand there's no reason they couldn't get a deal for Sanchez done. (well, despite the mornonic GM).

Could the Giants possibly look into some sort of Sanchez and some (possibly pitching? Schierholtz? Ishikawa?) for Chris Davis?

He'd be the IDEAL addition to that team as young, controllable corner infielder with massive power potential.

If the Giants give up Sanchez, this is the type of deal it ought to be, although Davis isn't likely going anywhere, at least until Smoak is ready.

Because Max Ramirez or Salty though..

**MAYBE Max Ramirez or Salty though..

Does any other team even have interest in Abreu though? Havent heard anything on the guy. The rays and A's were mentioned but the rays have burrell and giambi is likely headed back to the a's. And why shouldnt Vazquez count? Wren should certainly do more with the money they have but why does adding a good pitcher not count as making a move?

The AL East has 2 of the toughest LHP in baseball. Braves need a right handed power hitter otherwise it would be a good fit. FW if we want to compete we need at least a #1 if not ace. The closest guys on the FA market are Lowe and Perez. Perez is a walk waiting to happen when he is not focused, but ive seen him look like a guy capable of a #1 at. He is only 26 so we should at least be checking on him.

Lowry and Sanchez for who??

The only one Giants would want is Chris Davis.

Sanchez & Ishikawa?

Well, Davis is represented by Scott Boras himself so he won't be a Ranger too long anyway.

I agree. Abreu in LF is a better is a decent fit I think and perhaps a better signing than the Ibanez/Phillies signing depending on the price and length of the contract. I still hope we land Swisher for LF and am holding out hope the Royals and DM will decide they want to take a chance on Francoeur. Even if we can't get Greinke, they have several other players I think would be good fits. I still think highly of Gordon/Butler, DeJesus would be a good addition, Guillen could be worth the chance...I'd love to try Soria as a SP but doubt the odds they part with him in a deal are that much higher than Greinke really. While Wren hasn't made many moves, he hasn't made a mistake yet either so the potential for getting back into the mix for the NL East is still there. I remain optimistic but am also still skeptical of Wren as the long term replacement to JS.

I personally hope the Royals can find the money to sign Eckstein as a second baseman. Great work ethic, good OBP and lead-off candidate, and is good defensively, just doesn't have the arm to play short.

perez is going to look for way too much money, lowe money when all he's shown is the potential to be great but never put it together. i'll pass unless the price falls significantly. As for the LF situation, what right handed power hitter is out there? possibly xavier nady but then you give up prospects and its only one year. abreu with his quickly dropping price tag seems like the better bet to me.

"Sanchez & Ishikawa?"

Ha. I pretty much proposed this same deal like four comments above.

If the Giants could land Davis, then I actually think this team could contend next season, and in the future it could get scary.

You'd be talking about a rotation including Lincecum, Cain, Alderson, Bumgarner and Zito, with a lineup that includes Davis, Sandoval, Posey, Gillespie, Lewis, Villalona (one of Davis, Sandoval and Villalona would end up in left field), Rowand, Noonan and Burriss.

God damn it Glass, quit being so damn cheap and sign Orlando Hudson. And sign a quality starting pitcher you cheap bastard. And you wonder why the Royals always finish last. Dont act like you dont have any money when you were former President and Chief Executive Officer of Wal-Mart Stores. The Royals should of sold the franchise to Miles Prentice and crew.

Vazquez has a history of inability to pitch big games. If Frank Wren thinks he is going to be the guy who will turn this pitching staff around, they are terribly mistaken.

Atlanta needs to do as many of the following as possible:

1) Sign Abreu for left field.
2) Petition the league to allow Jeff Francouer to hit off of a tee in games.
3) Make a serious run at one or two of Jon Garland, Oliver Perez, Derek Lowe, or Randy Wolf.
4) Pick up a utility guy for the bench, who can be a spot-starter if needs be. My suggestion is Eric Hinske, who can play both corner infield and corner outfield positions.

Come on Atlanta, get it together!

The lack of interest in Abreu continues to amaze me. So do the Mets. If ever there were an offseason for them to break the bank, this is it, but I guess they're going to have Wright and Reyes to re-sign pretty soon. Still, starters and corner outfielders abound...

Haha

I said I still hope, it wasn't like I'm counting on it. DM has shown he still thinks highly of Braves players that the Braves have decided they can no longer wait on. I to believe Francoeur for either pitcher would take an awful lot more to get it done but that doesn't mean it's outside the realm of possibilities. /me shrugs

Aren't Wright/Reyes already locked up long term? As is Beltran and Santana correct? I mean most of their core is locked up, it's just surrounding them with the right players and actually getting the job done the Mets need to do. The NL East is always fun to watch and next season certainly could keep that tradition going.

Why not trade Soriano and a guy like Gregor Blanco or B.Jones to the Cards for Ludwick. It seems they are possibly looking for a closer. That gets us our power bat from the right hand side. Then we can make a run at Perez or Lowe if we can get a 1 or 2 year deal. Then We would have Diaz, Infante, Prado and Norton on the bench. I say Soriano because We have other live arms Marek, Stockman, Valdez, Acosta. So we can afford to move him.

The cards aren't going to move ludwick anymore. if they move an outfielder its going to be ankiel.
Bamabosox fan Ive got an even better 4 step plan
1) Sign Derek Lowe 4 years 52-56 million
2) Sign John Smoltz 1 year 5 million plus incentives
3) Sign Bobby Abreu 2 years 15-20 million
4) Sign Kawakami/Andy Pettite

Chris Davis is the ideal corner infielder the Giants are looking for and the rangers have the ideal farm system to match up with the Giants. I think a deal built around Sanchez could work. While Schierholtz may be more major league ready and potentially a better all around player, I don't think he fits the Rangers needs. As an outsider, it appears the Rangers have a very solid OF and a very good crop of minor leaguers. Ishikawa could work to replace Davis but definately doesn't have the long term upside. The Rangers may require 1 more player, possibly Velez, Bowker as major league ready, or a minor league pitcher such as Sosa, but that may be to much for the Giants taste.

I could see a Sanchez/Alderson deal only in the case of the Rangers sending over another top talent, such as Elvis Andrus or Nelson Cruz along with Davis. It's almost to big a deal to actually happen

jfish- Wright is signed through 2012 with an obvious club option for 2013, and Reyes is signed through 2010 with an even more obvious club option for 2011. So I take it back, they have time. They should be getting some combination of Lowe, Manny, and Abreu, but oh well. More power to the Marlins.

There is a massive difference between the value of Elvis Andrus and Nelson Cruz.

An elite shortstop prospect is worth much more than a guy who was seen as a AAAA player before really exploding last season, and now is seen as a potential all around quality player.

1) Sign Derek Lowe 4 years 52-56 million
2) Sign John Smoltz 1 year 5 million plus incentives
3) Sign Bobby Abreu 2 years 15-20 million
4) Sign Kawakami/Andy Pettite

Nice think...how bout maybe a five step plan with signin Garret Anderson/Luis Gonzalez as a fourth OFer

Bravesfan10 --

As a fellow Braves fan, I am appalled at all your options except #2.

Derek Lowe is a good SP, but not an ace (he only looks like one while playing in the NL West) and is not worth that kind of contract.

Bobby Abreu is not the kind of player that the Braves need. He's left handed and we already have a lefty dominated lineup. Plus, he doesn't have any heart and thinks he's better than everyone else. He would not fit in with the Braves mentality.

Not sure on Kawakami (don't know a lot about him), but signing Andy Pettite is just an awful idea. He's greedy (turning down a $10 MM deal from the Yankees), old (we already have enough old SP who are injury risks), and overrated.

Just my thoughts, but I think the Braves need to look elsewhere to improve this club.

Oh, and I forgot to mention Anderson and Gonzalez. The last thing we need is more old, injury risk (ala Andy Pettite). Neither of these bats would be a useful as Diaz, Blanco, or Josh Anderson.

How about maybe take a look and see if Kevin Towers would pursue a peavy deal if we included Casey Kotchman. WELL,maybe us braves fan are givin this guy too much hell. Anyone that says if they were swapped for Big Tex and not try too hard to prove to people like me that it wasnt a fluke for us, is a liar. So lets try and see if Kotcher can show us why Angel fans considered him tha future of their franchise

First off he simply agreed with me so your going after my remarks. Look at the peripherals for Lowe before you judge him by his basic stats. Yeah the NL West isnt great offensively but that doesnt make Lowe a bad pitcher. What better option is there?
Bobby Abreu is left handed but puts up consistent numbers, will come at a discounted rate, and what right handed hitter do you suggest we get?
Andy Pettite is where you're the farthest off. greedy? because he turned down a less than stellar offer. just take a look at his stats beyond era and win % and you would change your tune. And I havent checked the dictionary definition for old lately but when did injury risk and old become the same thing? Look he's old for a ballplayer but he stays in good shape and nothing suggests that he'll get injured soon. Pettite has quickly gone from overrated to underrated also

the only thing i agree is we dont need to add a bench player, we've got plenty of good ones. you forgot norton and infante though

I don't think Lowe is a bad pitcher, in fact is is good to very good, depending on where he plays. I just don't think he's an ace (nor do I think there are any SP out there who qualify). I think the Braves would be overpaying if they outbid the Mets for Lowe. Of course, I'm happy they didn't Burnette, too. The Braves have plenty of young, talented pitching which should carry them for a while (maybe not in 09, but after).

Rather than Abreu, I think Nady would be a good option. If the Braves do get a LH outfielder, I'd prefer Dunn. He's about the same quality fielder as Abreu, but walks and has more power.

Pettite is greedy to turn down such a lucrative offer from a team which he supposedly wants to play for. He is old, there's no questioning that, and with older pitchers you never know when they're going to completely fall off the table. I also don't think Pettite would be happy in Atlanta and that would surely cause his performance to suffer.

scribbletone....apparently youve forgotten about eugenio velez (best name in baseball) in your immaculate future projections of the giants

Depending on young pitchers to pan out is a risky move, if you have money and a hole you should fill it. Lowe and Pettite in no way block our pitching prospects, you put the young guys around the proven ones thus keeping the pressure off the rookies. I still dont see how its greedy to turn down a 6 million paycut when he put up solid numbers? 1 year 10 million is certainly not lucrative to a guy like pettite. If he gets paid, he'll be fine or he'll he'll go elsewhere if he doesn't want to play in atlanta. Just saying hes a pitcher we should look into. Nady over Abreu? Pass. Nady is signed for only one year, we would have to give up useful pieces in a trade, and the monetary difference will be minor. Finally its Burnett not Burnette
