« Levine On Young, Dye, Poreda, Peavy, Heilman | Main | Williams Shoots Down Dye Rumor »
Ken Rosenthal and Jim Salisbury have both heard from major league sources that the Phillies are interested in Nomar Garciaparra as a bench player.
Salisbury writes that the Phillies haven't yet made an offer, but could if Nomar seems interested.
Both Rosenthal and Salisbury hear that the Phillies have some interest in Gabe Kapler.

Wouldn't the Phils have to get rid of one of their LH bats (Dobbs, Jenkins, or Stairs) first in order to have to roster space to sign Nomar? I'd assume it'd be either Jenkins or Stairs, but I can't see any teams lining up to trade fir either of them.

Good place to revive a career.

Neither Stairs nor Jenkins will block Nomar from a roster spot. I'd be very surprised to see Stairs back - much as he's still a useful player on the right team, he's not as good a hitter as Dobbs at this point, and he lacks Jenkins' defensive skills at the outfield corners. He's redundant on this team.
Nomar's a nice pickup if he doesn't cost too much. He'd be in the mix at 2B early in the year, and if he hits and stays healthy (ha!) he could take a bunch of at bats from Feliz at 3B. He also would give the Phils a viable SS option if Rollins gets hurt, and a platoon partner for Dobbs if Howard goes down.

I don't see Stairs making the club.. we are already LH heavy, and we can prolly trade him for a minor league player. The Blue Jays may want him back... Nomar would be a solid signing.

I am surprised the Twins dont get in on him. He might be a good fit for 3b. If he can stay healthy. I think of it as a low risk propostion for them.

Marcus Giles was invited to Spring Training, as well as our biggest prospect Jason Donald. Those 2 will compete for a roster spot if Utley starts the year on the DL.
Our Offense is good enough that either player would do fine. Plus both are righties, which help even out the lineup too.
Chase will not be out long...

so just a question......why arent the phils going after a number 5 pitcher? yea i know they have corrasco, kendrick, park, and happ but besides park who is proven? wouldn't signing Garland or Looper be better? with Garland u get an innings eater and looper you get someone that u know what ur gettin, a 4 ERA not alot of walks......and with Romero out for 50 games wouldnt signing a Garland ease the strain on the bullpen? he shouldnt get too much maybe 3/29? and even if the phils are so high on corrasco (as i am) or happ( again on the wagon) wouldnt signing someone like sheets make sense? high reward, ace skills and if he gets hurt you have Happ or Corrasco...sign sheets for 1 yr, 5.5 mil with incentives.
