« Uggla's Arbitration Hearing Is Today | Main | Miguel Tejada Admits Lying »
WEDNESDAY: Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says a D'Backs reunion with Cruz is unlikely, because they'd lose the chance at a compensation pick.
MONDAY: On Friday, ESPN's Jayson Stark mentioned that the Diamondbacks "do have some interest in bringing back Juan Cruz in the right deal." Cruz's Type A status and rejection of Arizona's offer of arbitration has crippled his market.
Today MLB.com's Steve Gilbert confirms Stark's note, writing that the D'Backs have discussed re-signing Cruz. We learned when the D'Backs signed Jon Garland that recent circumstances have freed up cash for Arizona. Cruz, 30, boasts huge strikeout rates but has poor control.

I would love to have Juan back. He's a strikeout machine and if we can get get him on a one year deal for 5 mill or less that be a huuuuuuuuuge steal

Why don't the Mets go after Cruz. They have improved the bullpen greatly but it is still the Mets bullpen. A top caliber middle reliever (Which are to find) would be an excellent addition to an improving pen.

The Dbacks are puttin together quite a team.

D-Backs have it all ... they just need another bullpen presence, Cruz would be great to setup Qualls.

Note to Cashman: Get him!
He's only going to cost the Yankees a fourth-rounder. He fits in perfectly as a set-up guy (greater than 10K/9 last year) or in the 7th inning if Marte is used in the set-up role.
By making this move, I would be content with the roster in full. Don't let him slip, you'll regret, and I think he's the final piece.
Just this one final move. Please!

The Yankees are calling Juan, do you accept the call? You can make as much or more than with the Dbacks, and you might win a championship.

I'm starting to wonder if this Type A problem could actually lead to a sort of "sign and trade scenario." A negotiation between Cruz, the Dbacks, and a second team. The 3 agree to a fair contract and the second team offers a B prospect in return for Cruz and his contract.

Are you allowed to sign a free agent and trade him after he's been signed? Aren't there rules prohibiting teams to do that?

"Are you allowed to sign a free agent and trade him after he's been signed?"
Well I remember in 06 the Red Sox signed Alex Gonzalez as a sop gap... a month or so later they were talking about trading him and Manny as a package for a Tejada package. I remember reading something about how a newly signed player has an automatic no trade clause through a certain date, but that could be waived like any no trade clause with the players permission. Seems like it's the same situation here.

Ah, I thought you meant a sign-and-trade. In that case, that seems like a likely scenario. Losing a B-prospect is easier than losing a first round pick.
I have no idea why teams with protected first round picks are thinking of signing Cruz. They only lose out on a second round pick, don't they?

Man if the Dbacks can get him back that will be one hell of a bullpen i think. Especially if Tom Gordan is healthy,.

Wow... that's a kick in the teeth.

If Cruz could ever keep his walks down, he would be one of the most dominant relievers in baseball.
His raw stuff is nasty, and his strikeout numbers are huge. He's an excellent middle reliever, and a great power guy that can get guys out from both sides of the plate.
This is a guy who could become a pretty damn good closer, if he improves his command even a tad. He's a little old, but if he did it, he could be a steal for someone.

Come on Cashman, add another Dominican to the bullpen.

The Os have some pretty good bullpen pieces to trade. Considering the DBacks' farm, the Os might be a perfect trade partner.

It really would be a lovely bullpen in NY if they signed him. A pre-Mariano pen of Cruz, Marte, Bruney, Edwar, Veras and either Albaladejo or, if ready, Melancon would be the best we've had in forever.

Ummmmm.....why do the D'backs think that this late in the game there exists a team that will suddenly be willing to sign Cruz and give up a 1st rnder? They would be better off resigning him and trading him, either w/ his permission immediately, or w/o it in July.
