Rounding up links involving possible Mariners trades...
- Start with Jon Paul Morosi's article at FOX Sports. Morosi talked to Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik, who is in no hurry and has not received any offers yet. Seattle, at six games out in the AL West, is technically still focused on the pennant race.
- SI's Jon Heyman writes about Erik Bedard, who may just be the best pitcher available this summer. His contract's not a problem, and I should mention that unlike Jake Peavy, Bedard does not have no-trade protection. Heyman believes that Bedard would probably require a better package than the one the White Sox were going to send to San Diego for Peavy. He likes the Phillies, White Sox, and Brewers as possible suitors.
- Heyman rattles off other Mariners trade candidates when the time comes: Jarrod Washburn, Miguel Batista, Adrian Beltre, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Russell Branyan. In his article, Morosi wondered if now is the time to sell high on reliever David Aardsma.
- Larry LaRue of The News Tribune has the local take.
"Heyman believes that Bedard would probably require a better package than the one the White Sox were going to send to San Diego for Peavy. He likes the Phillies, White Sox, and Brewers as possible suitors."
Four months of Bedard and maybe some draft picks is going to cost more than Poreda, Richard and two pitching prospects?
Psh, screw that..

Clayton Richard > Erik Bedard. Healthier, younger, cheaper.

can branyan play OF at least mediocrely? he and diaz could make a real nice offensive platoon i think for the next year and a half,

heyman is an IDIOT if he thinks Bedard will get more than the Padres were offered for Peavy. Then keep him and someone will BUY him in the offseason. Sorry i'm not giving up top tier talent for him. Its NOT a sound investment.

I also wouldn't go near Branyan at all. Didnt' he bounce around Philly and Cincy a couple years back? he was on the scrap heap. Sure he's done good this year but I expect him to fall back to mediocrity if he was traded. sorry, nothing of value given for him either.

Branyan is OPSing 1000 this year. Even if he is bellow average in LF/RF an if he drops off 200 points or so he would be a huge upgrade over Francy.

If the Mariners could recoop one guy of the same type of talent they gave away in Adam Jones and Chris Tillman (not to mention Sherril) I'd consider Jack Z a wizard. As a smart and prudent GM, he's got to blow a fuse everytime he looks at what Bavasi gave away.
An outfield of Shin Choo Choo, Adam Jones, and Ichiro sounds pretty dog gone incredible.

Bedard must be a Boras client. Heyman is pretty much a mouthpiece for Boras.

If Bedard is healthy then it is a worthy investment. He really is that good and worth all of a team's top tier talent. National League fans really have no idea how good he is. They're just looking at numbers, not from watching games and how hitters react to him. The problem with Bedard is (and very valid) is that he has never posted a full healthy season in the bigs. So even if he reaches the All-Star Break healthy with strong numbers, there should be some concern that he could breakdown down the stretch when he's needed the most. If a team traded their top 2 and change prospects for him, then this could be a disaster.
I'm an Os fan and I've followed Bedard since he was a minorleaguer. Two years before he left the Os Bedard was whispered about as being a dispassionate, cold, distant guy who wasn't willing to put himself on the line to win games. I speculate that this attitude probably has much to do with his time as a minorleaguer with a major injury with a 50/50 chance he may never be the same pitcher again. It was supposedly a little more than just the elbow. Eventually tho the whispers around Baltimore was that it took very little to knock him out of the lineup, He was being extra cautious with himself so he had no qualms about removing himself. A lot of the injuries that had him sitting on the bench were fairly mild knee strain and the like. His media personality can also come off as sarcastic, arrogant, and contemptuous.
I mentioned all of this to Seattle fans when the trade rumors were being circulated. Most of them responded by saying that the Os are a losing team, and once he's an Mariner he will be a different person since he's on a winning ballclub.

No, he's not. A summer rental is not worth all of a team's top tier talent. And he also wasn't worth the top tier talent Seattle gave for him. Which most folks realized at the time.
"National League fans really have no idea how good he is. They're just looking at numbers, not from watching games and how hitters react to him."
Really? I have a pretty good idea of how good he is this year: he's got a 3.60 FIP. That's really good. It's not out of this world, and it's about his career average. Of all the guys out there being mentioned as "top of the rotation" guys on the trade-block, he should be the easiest to get. If Seattle wants to try to overvalue him because they gave so much for him in 07, they're not doing themselves any favors. Sunk cost.

I wasn't involved in that conversation, because I would have told you that if the M's traded Jones for Bedard than I'd swear off Mariner baseball for life...and then they go and trade Jones, Sherrill, and Tillman for Bedard. Unfortunately I swore off Mariner Baseball for life, but couldn't stick to it, and now I see Tillman's AAA Line and Jones' offensive numbers and wish I would've. Bedard could have won a Cy Young award last year and I would still be disgusted with that deal.

Branyan, on the other hand is a real solid hitter, I was sour on this pick-up at first, but have been very pleased. He's even hitting Lefties reasonably. He'll be a solid pick up for someone at the deadline.

A Summer Rental deal is worth it if it gets you over a hump and turns the tide for you. It's exactly those kinds of moves that swing momentum into your favor. It's happened before. St Louis adding Mark McGwire. The Brewers adding C.C. for a historic run last year. For my team Frank Robinson traded to the Orioles. If it turns the tide of fans back to the team then it can get a ball rolling. Sure, maybe the player may end up leaving, but you will be compensated in the draft (for what that's worth), and, if you're a team that was close then you'd gladly trade those pieces for a championship. If you're a team without real quality minor league depth then sending out good prospects will hurt bigtime, in which case, you really have no right thinking about making such a trade. I am just talking about those teams who are a player or two away, having every slot filled with a quality guy, and quality depth in the minors. If those teams don't trade prospects who would be blocked anyways for a chance at a run, then that's not a winning attitude to me.

Russell Branyan to the Braves to play LF (awful defense, but the offensive improvement is worth it). Pull the trigger, Wren.

As far as the Phillies are concerned, I doubt they have enough to get Halladay or Peavy. That leaves Bedard as the next best pitcher available. Summer rental or whatever, he's exactly what they need if they hope to compete.
For the Phillies to clutch their "top" prospects is to potentially concede the division and the playoffs. Happ, Moyer, Kendrick and company are flying on a wing and a prayer, not to mention the fans and their brass if they don't make a move for a legitimate #2 starter.
I get the impression that PhilsWSchamps doesn't want to make the playoffs, or thinks he/she can get Peavy/Halladay for cheap. In either case, PhilsWSchamps would have to change his/her name.
Aardsma and Branyan would be good co-chips to go along with Bedard, Washburn and Beltre. Maybe no one respects the Mariners, their woes or their talent, but if you watch these guys play they look strong.
