« Padres Promote Pitching Prospects: Plausible Peavys? | Main | First Baseman? Mets Need a Shortstop »

Odds and Ends: Big Papi, Ray, Murphy

The night in baseball so far...

  • David Ortiz finally homered after 149 regular-season at-bats without a home run dating back to September 22, 2008. Home runs tend to come in bunches, so if Ortiz quickly follows with a few more, consider the Red Sox less interested in hitters like Aubrey Huff or Nick Johnson.
  • Chris Ray is throwing with desired velocity, but still doesn't have his location, according to Spencer Fordin or MLB.com. Watch Ray's walk rate. He's walked nine in 12 2/3 innings. But with 15 strikeouts in that time, he's a bit of control away from helping the Orioles-or perhaps a contending team, come the trade deadline.
  • All those thinking the Mets will trade for a first baseman, watch the next four games carefully. The Mets are giving Daniel Murphy a chance to grab the position, and Murphy, a natural third baseman, should have an easier adjustment there than in left field.

If the Sox replace Ortiz, that means they'll be paying $12.5 million dollars in 2010 for a pinch hitter. Ouch.

Don't think too hard about Ortiz. He hit a bad pitch on a night where the wind was carrying everything out of Fenway. It's a fluke.

He'll still be in the single digits by the end of the year.

I'm sick of hearing people talk up Chris Ray. He flat out sucks this year, they would be trading him at his lowest point. Way too inconsistent to close like many suggested, he needs a good month or two before a decision is made on him. Any pitcher that makes George Sherrill look like a great closer needs some work.

Howard,

I really like these topics that you brought up this evening 1st of all tonight and hope that MLB Rumors site continues this practice.

Ortiz did hit a couple of nice, fat pitches from 1st of all a tiring lefty and then a righty with -0- control, but am sure that Sox fans and ortiz both will gladly hope that it is a huge confidence boost for him, he (and the Sox) dearly need his bat, as well as to save the farm from having to give up a prize prospect in a desperation move to replace his bat.

It was also really nice to see that sweet HR especially that Tek hit to dead CF. He is certainly able to get around on the FB this year, something I never figured he would be able to do again.

Yeah, there was some cool information posted tonight. Not really all hot stove stuff, but good discussion material.

Agreed...great work Howard. I hope to see you as a reguar here.

Ditto. I look forward to reading your work, Howard.

Except Ortiz has also been the victim of bad luck. He's driven at least six or seven pitches that, on most days, would be out of their respective parks. Whether his true power numbers ever return is a mystery, but I expect him to hit more home runs as the season progresses and luck evens out.

Unless I'm mistaken, Ortiz is still bothered by the wrist, no? Believe me, he will be okay, as long as he gets that wrist to 100 percent. Mets fans watched Delgado struggle with wrist problems for 2 years, we all thought he was done, but all it really was was Carlos trying to overcompensate for his wrist, start earlier because he didn't have the bat speed, which caused him to swing at a bunch of bad pitches and commit to early. He was late on fastballs, chasing the high one, way out in front on breaking balls, chasing them in the dirt. Delgado and Ortiz are very similar hitters, and for big power guys like that, your hands and wrists are everything. Once Ortiz gets completely healthy and begins to trust his hands and his quickness, he will be fine. I'm sure of it.
