Phillies To Pursue One Impact Pitcher

Brett Myers is out for the season with hip surgery.  Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports spoke to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr., who said the Phillies don't have the money to add multiple starters.  Instead they'll aim high, with names like Erik Bedard and Roy Oswalt speculated by Rosenthal.  So, not a Brad Penny type.  SI's Jon Heyman wrote about Bedard's appeal earlier today.

Rosenthal also wonders if Myers' surgery could restore some lost velocity, making him an intriguing free agent after the season.

If they sign Bedard he can be injured with them for the rest of the year instead of the M's...it could be interesting if a trade doesn't happen for awhile because in my opinion the mets and phillies both need a starter, and they will do alot to keep one away from each other...giving a team like Houston a huge trading advantage.

to phils: taylor buchholz & brad penny or rocco baldeli (need a RH bat of the bench)

to sox: carlos corrasco, lou marson, jason donald and other lesser prospect

I really dont like the move. Bedard is a big risk and Oswalt is throwing 5MPH slower then he was a few years ago. I rather take a shot at Clay Buckholtz for Marson and a marginal prospect. We have to build our farm back up and I would not part ways with Kyle Drabeck. He will be in AA by the end of the season and might be the Phillies #3 starter next season.

meant clay not taylor, my bad

as harry or whitey would say "his friends call him taylor"

Dear Ruben,

In making dealings for Erik Bedard, please keep Drabek, Taylor, Brown, and Carrasco firmly entrenched in Phillies Nation.

PS. Please thank Pat for Josh Outman. Those 9 Ks in Arlington today were beast.

Signed,
Me

Time for Omar to cock block a little bit, try to drive up the price.

I think the phillies know what the mets can and cant afford right now, and going after one of the pitchers that the phillies are going for, i have a feeling ruben amaro would decide to not call omar's bluff and let the mets overpay for someone like bedard lol

As a Braves fan, I'm praying it's not Oswalt...He has dominating stuff when he has it together and could kill the NL East down the stretch.

lilmar04- Where you getting that info about Oswalt because his last start he was hitting 96 and 97. I don't think he has ever been higher than that, except for maybe when he was in the pen as a rookie. He has always been in that 92-96 range and not seeing 5 MPH difference at all. But there should be no way that Oswalt goes without Drabek and Corrasco as the centerpoints of a deal.

I have to believe that if the Phillies really wanted a dominant ace to take charge in the East, Roy Oswalt or Jake Peavy would be a Phillie now

"I have to believe that if the Phillies really wanted a dominant ace to take charge in the East, Roy Oswalt or Jake Peavy would be a Phillie now"

Care to explain that? I really don't agree with that at all. We're less than 50 games into the season, the trade market hasn't even developed yet. Plus, Myers was just injured on Wednesday and made a decision on surgery today. How quickly do you expect the Phillies to move?

The smart move for Amaro and the Phillies would be to call up someone like Bastardo or Carrasco for a few spot starts and dip their feet in the trade pool. No reason to panic and overpay when we're not even sure what starting pitchers will be available come late July.

"to phils: taylor buchholz & brad penny or rocco baldeli (need a RH bat of the bench)

Might want to be a little worried about acquiring Rocco Baldelli, His recent muscle *tightness* problem *may* be linked to his fatigue disorder problem saw on the Globe site a few days ago. He was removed after running out a GB to 1st and found nothing wrong, only was tired in his legs and has not played since.

On the rest of the proposed offer, Clay Bucholz I doubt would go in any deal that would have nothing but more prospects and none as top as himself.

Myers isn't out for the year. His rehab will take 3-4 months. He could be back late in the season and be ready for a playoff push.

trade for astros...

Phillies get Roy Oswalt, Jose Valverde(in place of Lidge if his struggle continues)...

Astros get Lou Marson, Carlos Carrasco, Kyle Drabek

^^^

Phils aren't on an unlimited budget... Valverde is too expensive coupled with Oswalt... If you took some salary off the Phils books maybe, but that would defeat the purpose of the deal...

Oswalt, by himself, would make sense... However, that package is too expensive for the Phils...

Bastardo is a man child and probably the best Phils pitching prospect in the organization... He is better than Carrasco now...

If the Phils get really desperate, they could offer the Pads their bounty of prospects ( something the Cubs can't do ) and then guarantee Peavy's 2012 option for 22MM so he would waive his no trade clause...

This would, more than likely, get him to Philadelphia... It's highly risky, but as Floyd Mayweather Jr. said, " if it makes dollars, it makes sense "...

"PS. Please thank Pat for Josh Outman. Those 9 Ks in Arlington today were beast."

First off, I'll thank Oakland for Blanton. He was a huge cog in us winning the World Series. They can have Outman's 9 K's. His previous start he had zero strikeouts and 5 walks. He may be a good player, but it also may be a case of the hitters in the league needing to see him a few more times until they figure him out. Time will tell. That trade by Gillick was a great win now trade. And guess what? We won it all baby!

Clay Buccholz will not be traded for prospects. Only a massive/proven/young talent would inspire the Sox to deal him. So, basically, he won't be traded.

I doubt he is truly a consideration for the Phils. That is just blog speculation. Oswalt or Bedard could be huge, though they both come with question marks.

"to phils: taylor buchholz & brad penny or rocco baldeli (need a RH bat of the bench)

I'd go Marson for Bucholz straight up but that trade has the Phils giving up way too much for too little.

I'd better not hear about any scouts in Clearwater. Drabek and Brown should be off the table deal breakers. Drabek had a dominating complete game shutout last night. he should have been in AA earlier this year but the Phils rarely ever rush someone.

I'm also hearing that the callup to replace Myers' start in San Diego will be either Bastardo or Kendrick. I'm praying for Bastardo. I can't stand a reprise of the Kyle Kendrick show. He still hasn't worked on his changeup enough.

Frankly, I don't think the Phillies' budget would stop them from dealing for a Penny type even after acquiring a frontline starter. If they wanted Penny specifically, the Red Sox are a team that has the resources to eat his reasonable salary in exchange for a better return.

"the Red Sox are a team that has the resources to eat his reasonable salary in exchange for a better return."

It's almost a certainty that if they are going to move him at all, that whoever gets him is going to pay him the total amount. Even with what he is performing at right now and with no improvement, he is still at #4 at least on most playoff team performance wise and better than that on some that are still looking for a starter.

If Penny continues to improve each time out like he has the last several times out, the price for him will go up anyway prospect wise.

Yeah we really miss Josh Outman....ha

I don't think Bedard will be cheap. They will probably ask for Carrasco or Brown

Donald could be of interest based on SEAs poor SS situation? Maybe Mike Taylor, Donald and a lesser arm....Stutes or Worley

I think that is some good, near league ready quality for SEA, without giving up our very best guys

The Phils would have a hard time convincing Oswalt/Peavy to waive their NTC to play in that sand box. Bedard seems like a better match.

Still don't get why Penny would not be on their wish list. They already needed a starter before Myers got hurt, so they need 2 now, right??

"Yeah we really miss Josh Outman....ha"

I know the Blanton trade was
great for the Phillies and helped them become WFC. The Outman thing was sarcasm. Phillies fans shouldn't miss him IMO.

"The Phils would have a hard time convincing Oswalt/Peavy to waive their NTC to play in that sand box. Bedard seems like a better match."

Minute Maid Park is just as much of a sandbox as CBP. And, the Phillies are more likely to win games than the Astros.

"Donald could be of interest based on SEAs poor SS situation? Maybe Mike Taylor, Donald and a lesser arm....Stutes or Worley"

Bedard shouldn't net more than 1.5 years of Harden did. Michael Taylor shouldn't come close to a Bedard deal. Remember, Bedard is injury prone and only under control for half a year. And with how few innings he pitched last year, he might not even be Type A.

Is there really a risk he won't be Type A? I guess it's hard to know for sure at this point

I know Bedard's injury prone, but I also know the Phillies need for a starter who can miss bats is really dire right now

I also know that he's going to cost some quality. You could look at any deal on paper and say, "2/3 year of Bedard for 6 years of "Phils top 10 Prospect X" isn't a sound decision

By offering Taylor, who is probably the 3rd best org prospect, they are holding onto Brown (their top overall player) and all their top arms (Carrasco, Bastardo, Drabek, Knapp).

Also consider that only one OF spot is open on the big club before 2012 (RF, 2011 after Werth expires). I know Ibanez will be approximately 50 by then, but he's looking strong so far

It's a short term focused deal but I think the Phils would go for it. I also think Seattle would be interested in that package

There are some other options if they are interested in Marson (less likely with their having a good C prospect)....maybe Marson, Donald, Worley, Collier

bedard for carrasco, marson, donald.....

bedard leaves seattle and doesnt lose a game all year, pitches more 6 innings, in every game, leads philly to another world series and all the people who said bedard is just to injury prone has to eat there words and the mariners are still looking up from the 3rd worst record in the major leagues but finally has the curse of the bedard trade over and done with. 2010 will be a lot better. i can only hope

Would a Johjima for Penny trade have any interest in Boston?

Would reunite Johjima and Daisuke, he's five years younger than Varitek, and though he's signed to a stupid contract (2 years, $16M left) he'd make a good stop gap solution between Vtek and catcher of the future.

Obviously it would be a deadline deal because Joh is out until close to the trade deadline.

and theoretically involve Penny to Seattle.

"Would a Johjima for Penny trade have any interest in Boston? "

Johjima is on the DL and out for 2 months....

I noted that. I said it would occur near the deadline.

Oswalt's velocity is UP in 2009.

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=571&position=P#pitchtype

He would be a great pickup for the Phillies if he will waive his full no trade clause.

word out of philly is that bastardo is getting the call for Tuesday's game against the Padres.

I'm so friggin happy!!!!

The timing for his first start is intriguing...

It will start the speculation train if he does well...
Bastardo has been getting high praise lately... He been getting some lofty comparisons... I hope we can return half of hype for production... We'd have one hell of a pitcher...

allabouthephils,

My fear about bastardo is that he has only 2 quality pitches. His third time around a lineup may be difficult. And while he thankfully starts in Petco against the not so great offense of the padres (PITCH AROUND ADRIAN GONZALEZ PLEASE), if he continues in the rotation he'd end up in a Sunday night game vs the Dodgers and then a Saturday game vs the Red Sox. In those he could struggle. We'll see. My main reason for my happiness is that it isn't Kendrick.

oh and as for the Santana comparisons its ridiculous. Jayson Stark should know better.

scuttfarkas wrote, "I'd go Marson for Bucholz straight up but that trade has the Phils giving up way too much for too little."

Not too much of a homer, are you Scutt? Buchholz is higher rated than any prospect in the Phillies organization. He already has a big league no-hitter under his belt. No way the Red Sox will give him up for a player with a minor league career average of .270 who has never hit double-digit home runs in a season. Marson alone might be enough to get Brad Penny. Buchholz would probably cost the Phils Marson plus someone like Jayson Werth.

If I'm Seattle, heres what I'm lookin for. Out of the Top 10 Prospects, I'd only be focused on 4. Both OFs (Brown & Taylor), Donald, & Carrasco. And of those 4 I'd only be asking for 2 in return, 1 being either Brown &/or Taylor, &/or Carrasco. Just from what I've heard locals & other fans say, Donald has the glove but may not prove to be a viable hitter. Of the OFs, I'd love to have Brown (just b/c not only is he #1 in the system, but also b/c he hits for avg. & has the best arm as well) but wouldn't be opposed to Taylor at the same time.

i dont really care who we get as long as his name is erik jake roy or cliff. i wont settle with brad penny or taylor bucholz isnt he a reliver anyway. but it is not worth all those prospects if we get them for 1-2 years get peavy and lock him up for awhile
