6:22pm: Jon Heyman of SI.com chimes in via Twitter, saying he hears "no dice on Pedro and Chisox." Heyman does suggest some team should be interested in Pedro.
9:04am: Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times was wondering yesterday whether a couple of free agents might be able to help the White Sox.
DH Jim Thome has been bothered here and there by a heel injury, though he played in the last two games. Cowley asked GM Ken Williams if Barry Bonds would be Plan B if the heel injury worsened, and Williams emailed back, "No."
Cowley quizzed manager Ozzie Guillen about Pedro Martinez, who would conceivably become the team's fifth starter if Jose Contreras is booted. Ozzie's answer left the door just barely ajar:
"Pedro Martinez was mentioned in spring training, but just because a couple of his friends called me, and my job is to give Kenny the information. But that's it, no, Pedro, no, not right now. I don't know if we're going to because that's Kenny's decision, but right now that's not on my mind.''
According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, top pitching prospect Aaron Poreda is not an immediate candidate if Contreras falters Thursday.

Cleveland could use Pedro - they could use anybody.
These Bonds questions have to stop. No one is ever signing him again. He's in his mid-forties and is a year out of the game.

Yes, Pedro would be a good fit on the White Sox.
But can Kenny and Ozzie PLEASE hurry up and boot Contreras out of the rotation and replace him with Clayton Richard. He's just better at baseball at this point. Has Richard done something to piss off Ozzie?

I was about to make literally the exact same post until I saw this.
I've actually been pleasantly surprised with Colon so far, but the White Sox just can't move forward with Contreras in the rotation the way he's been pitching.
Pedro would make for a serious upgrade over what Contreras has given thus far.
As for non-Pedro replacements for Contreras, I totally agree that Richard needs to be promoted into the rotation.
Richard doesn't miss many bats, but he's a lefty that doesn't walk guys often and he induces a lot of groundballs, and that's a pretty solid plan for success.
I would move Richard into the rotation, and then bring up Poreda at some point to help out the bullpen if necessary. Otherwise, I'd hope that both Richard and Poreda could join Danks, Buehrle and Floyd in a nearly all-lefty 2010 rotation.

Why bother with Bonds when they have the AMAZING DARRYL WARD!!!
:)

No kidding, xethicx. Erubiel Durazo is still available too, guys!

I would prefer if the White Sox went out and added a Geoff Jenkins/Frank Catalanotto type if Thome is going to be out for a while.
That way, they could move Dye and his crap defense to the DH spot, and the new addition could get time in right field.
They should move a poor defensive player to DH if Thome is out, and get the upgrade defensively, because they don't have any options that can come close to Thome's production.

It's amazing nobody has gone out and signed Cat yet. Perfect opportunity for him here with the Chisox and they are in a playoff hunt as well and even Cat plays better corner OF defense than Dye does.
When the Chisox are stuck with Thome, Konerko and Dye, all old and barely mobile and none worth anything on defense, it's impossible to hide them all at DH scribbletone and you are 100% correct on now being the time to hide Dye at DH while they can.

I bet 20 teams in baseball right now or more could use the Cat. No clue why he hasnt been picked up, especially when he is available for real cheap, itd probably only take 400-500K to grab him and have him walk right into the line up and start contributing offensively and defensively.
Do these teams know something we dont?

Not even just the Cat either what about:
Richie Sexson - Im sure he still has some pop in that bat, or at least enough to be worth a half mill.
Mark Grudzielanek - Good in the clubhouse and could still provide enough defense and contact hitting even in a temporary role to be worth signing.
Then you have Pedro, Byrd, Perez, Mulder and more who could walk into the rotation and help out some of the teams hurt by injuries.
I dont understand...

Bonds, at this point, probably doesn't want to be signed since he's got a huge huge huge payout coming when he files a grievance with the union.

If the White Sox are looking for a DH, why not sign the guy they replaced with Thome...Frank Thomas. He couldn't do any worse than Thome!
