| Sammy Sosa Set To Announce Retirement »

Some early thoughts about the Nate McLouth deal from around the blogosphere...
- Bob Smizik says the Pirates send a message to their fan base with the move: The present be damned. "His trade is bound to have a pronounced negative impact on the clubhouse, much like last season when the team collapsed after the July trades of Xavier Nady and Jason Bay." That seems a little extreme, but the Pirates did just move perhaps their most recognizable player.
- Bucs Dugout is naturally excited by the prospects in the deal, but they're not blown away. They also note that this kind of move makes perfect sense given the Bucs' current situation, and that they should be listening to offers for their other veterans as well.
- Talking Chop declares the move a win for the Braves, but says the biggest story is how fast Frank Wren & Co. have acted to correct the team's flaws. I still can't but wonder if they'll continue to look for an upgrade in rightfield as well.
Mike Axisa writes for River Ave. Blues.
Talking Chop has it right. Wren didn't sit around and wait until the deadline, if the phils and mets search for improvements lingers til the deadline, this gives the braves a "head start" if you will with their improved team

We got Mclouth so we outta keep Frenchy. He does come in handy sometimes like last night when he hit the game tying home run.I now think we schould look for a utility man and a decent reliever.

Solid haul for the Pirates. Yeah, if this was a competitive team, dealing a McLouth would be stupid, but the Pirates' organization has NO pitching, whatsoever, and Morton and Locke immediately jump into the short list of their top prospects.

To me this was a great move for both sides. The Bucs are not a contender this year and most likely not in the next 2 years. How do you get a competitive team back on the field? You either spend a good chunk of change to get a fix now or you stockpile prospects to build a team of the future. Bucs don't have that much money to spend to the choice is obvious...they need to do whatever it takes to move veterans for solid prospects to build the farm for the future. With a good draft this year and getting more good prospects for LaRoche, Sanchez, Wilson, etc they could put together a decent team in 2-3 years...and maybe a very good team in 3-4 yrs. From the Braves standpoint they got a guy that is under control for a few years and is very productive at a key position (CF). They didn't give away any of their top 3 prospects (Hanson, Heyward or Schafer). Win-Win on this trade really.

I don't get what the Pirates are doing, at some point they have to actually build around players they have. And if they are gonna trade away their veteran players, they have to get at least one player of worth back. They've traded away an entire outfield (Bay, McLouth, Nady) without getting one impact player back.

Hmm, add Yunel Escobar, and this package is what the Padres wanted for Peavy in November.
Peavy >> McLouth. Solid haul, all around.

How fast Wren was to correct the problem? Is this the same problem that they failed to address since the end of 2008? Is that really fast? Was Garrett Anderson ever considered a solution? Please....

The Pirates need to put together a solid pitching staff before they can even think of being competitive. Andy LaRoche seems to finally be putting it together. Alvarez at 1B. Solid outfield with McCutchen and Morgan with Tabata and Hernandez working their way up. A healthy Doumit gives them a solid catcher.
Middle infield and pitching (major league and high-minors depth) is what the need to be competitive.

Congrats to Pittsburgh, great trade Gorkey and Morton are legit. You look at the trade and what the hell happened with Jason Bay trade? The Cubs, Yankees, Mets, Sox may spend the most dollar wise on there players but man Atlanta spends the most resources. Nefalti, Salty, Andurus, Holland, Morton, Gorky for Nate and Tex? Wow. Nice job Wren

Solid haul LOL a # 5 starter maybe and a high ceiling outfield prospect who hasn't been showing it and Locke -WHO. LOL

True, but yunel would have been the best player in that package by quite a bit. I don't think he gets enough recognition...he's a real good SS. Peavy's contract is also alot less team friendly, and pitchers have a much greater risk of injury.

Yunel remains the best piece offered to the pads. A cheap SS with 15 hr power, .300 avg, and very good defensively is worth a ton

Where is the power going to come from in the Pirates lineup? Aside from Alvarez, does anyone else on the team even have 10 home run power?
I know that isn't everything, but still, the Pirates have enough speedy outfielders. I sure hope McCutcheon is all that he's supposed to be because suddenly there's a ton of pressure on him.
Sure Andy LaRoche, Morgan, and Moss are nice little players, but none of them are difference makers in a lineup. LaRoche and Moss were brought in for power potential and they have none. This team will continue to struggle on offense if they have eight of the same player.
The rotation is second in the league in quality starts and the offense had 15 games where they've scored one run or fewer. That's a big deal.

Justink8996 - Wren didn't make the Tex trade.

If the Pirates wait a while for their young guys to develop, they should have the money to go after some bats in a couple of years. It'll work out.

Great move by Pitt. The only thing the Pirates have going for them is outfield depth and Mclouth really wasn't needed.

The last thing the phils or mets should do is be reactive to this. The Braves still have issues. Does this help, yes, does Hanson's callup help, yes and moreso than this but I still don't see them winning the division this year.

How sick would the braves lineup look if we somehow could get Jermaine Dye to replace Frenchy in right.
1.McClouth
2.Escobar
3.Jones
4.McCann
5.Dye
6.Johnson
7.Anderson
8.Kotchman

i'm excited about McClouth. i think that he is going to help the Braves Lineup. i hope we can get a RF maybe if we don't deal Frenchy you can bring him off the bench.

This is a great move by Frank Wren. McLouth offers a clear upgrade and is under club control for 3 more seasons. And the move was made without parting with the untouchables.
Sure, I'll miss the prospect of seeing Gorkys Hernandez plays for the Braves but he wasn't going to be ready in time for the last few years of Bobby Cox, Chipper Jones, and the gang.

If I'm a Pirates fan I'd stay away from the park for awhile until this organization shows that it knows what it's doing. Time will tell if any of these guys work out, or they will just have an amazing AAA team. The key is to drafting wisely. They'll be running out of trading chips soon. I'd say that McLouth was the last one they had. They won't get anything for Jack Wilson or Adam LaRoche.

The only way this deal works out for the Pirates is if McLouth steps into a hole, rips his archilles heel to shreds and is forced to retire.
IMHO, this was a bean counter's swap, a salary dump. It has all the markings.

And I think a lot of people underrate the Pirates' starting pitching. It's not good, but its taking strides in the right direction and building depth.
Maholm and Duke are good.
Then you've got Snell, Ohlendorf, Karstens, Gorzellany, and Morton competing to fill the rest of the rotation. You've got depth. Guys like Locke and Morris are in the minors for later on.
If they draft a Crow or a Matzek, there's their ace potential guy.
They have an awful bullpen, but bullpens can be fixed in a year.
