Cardinals Pursuing Matt Holliday

SATURDAY, 7:05pm: Peter Gammons tweets (account protected) that any discussions would have to start with Brett Wallace, as the A's don't need to trade Holliday.

FRIDAY, 11:13pm: The Cardinals are "redoubling efforts to acquire" Matt Holliday, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  Strauss says the Cards have warmed to the idea of offering a multiplayer package.  They were previously reluctant to send a Ryan Ludwick-fronted package to Colorado in November.  Strauss believes that the Cardinals would now probably be willing to offer Ludwick, one of Jason Motte, Chris Perez, and Kyle McClellan, and a prospect to Holliday's current team, the Athletics.  Strauss adds:

Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr., who opposed the November deal for Holliday, is apparently on board with assuming the remainder of Holliday's $13.5 million salary.

Only about $7.6MM remains on Holliday's contract, and he is of course a free agent after the season.  Holliday, a Scott Boras client, currently profiles as a Type A free agent despite a decrease in production with Oakland.

Ludwick has about $2MM remaining on his contract this year.  He's under team control through 2011 as an arbitration-eligible player.  Ludwick was actually drafted by the A's in 1999, 60th overall.  In 2002, they sent him to the Rangers with Gerald Laird and others for Carlos Pena and Mike Venafro.  Ludwick, like Holliday, has dropped off significantly from his huge 2008 season.

Oh please get done. As long as they can sign him to an extension I would absolutely give up Ludwick, Perez/McClellan, and another prospect (Jay, Anderson, Jones, T. Green?) for Holliday.

Bench Duncan, play Rasmus in CF full time, and let Ankiel play in RF and you have a much better OF both offensively and defensively.

eh. nooo cardinals! the braves should get holiday lol

As an A's fan, Ludwick doesn't excite me. The A's need to be looking for solutions at 3B and CF. However, I'm assuming Wallace and Rasmus are off the table...
So..

Yeah this doesn't really excite me.

This sounds like a rumor started by Billy Beane. No way they go Luddy PLUS RHP PLUS a prospect for half a year of Holliday.

"eh. nooo cardinals! the braves should get holiday lol"

Just doesnt look like the Braves are willing to take on a big salary. That said, the Cards better do something to protect Albert. Tonight against the twins ( and a very average pitcher in Perkins) was just more of the same of what has been going on. Get the man some protection Mo.

"As long as they can sign him to an extension"

Yea, good luck. His agent is Scott Boras. He is filing for free agency this November.

does it really make sense to trade away a player who makes peanuts and is under team control for someone who has barely better production and makes tons more?

Holliday would be great. But why give up Ludwick when he could heat up any time. Ankiel or duncan should be the ones to give up.Both are slumping or approaching free agency.

"But why give up Ludwick when he could heat up any time. Ankiel or duncan should be the ones to give up.Both are slumping or approaching free agency."

If your Beane, why would you take 2 guys who will be approaching FA? You want the guy who is locked up for cheap. It goes both ways guy.

Rolling, none of those guys are approaching FA. Luddy is under control for 3 more years.

I have to find the link, but wasn't it just posted a few days ago that Holliday was very interested in playing for the Cards and would definitely listen to an extension offer if traded there?

This seems like a solid fit for the Cards, and no Duncan and Ankiel will not be part of this trade...well, unless we just throw in Duncan and ask for a mid tier pitching prospect.

If the cards get this deal done, could they afford both Pujols and Holliday? Holliday wont deserve the money he will get, Pujols certainly will, it seems smarter to just keep Ludwick.

Ack, i'm sorry, reading comprehension failure after seeing Ludwick's name involved in this silly rumor; i blame the high blood pressure.

yeah, Ankiel isn't useful to beane. Duncan MIGHT be, if he thinks he can be fixed. Luddy is the guy he'll be asking about, or rasmus/jones, both of whom BETTER be off the table.

"If your Beane, why would you take 2 guys who will be approaching FA? You want the guy who is locked up for cheap. It goes both ways guy."

I know two months of matt holliday aren't worth two and a half seasons of ludwick. The guy hasn't put up the numbers he should have and now the A's have to choose between a pick in the draft or major league ready talent. And not to mention the high price for holliday. Don't make holliday look like manny ramirez just because you want more.

SleepyCA-ankiel is a free agent after the season. Get the facts.

Right, i thought rolling was talking about Luddy. As I said, reading comprehension failure, ankiel isn't going to be traded.

Ludwick, Motte and a prospect for Holliday..

Yes please.

I have said that the Cards will get Holliday sometime this season for awhile now. He would look great in Cardinal red and would provide an adrenaline rush to the club when they see the front office make such a big move. I believe that Holliday would resign with us because everyone loves St. Louis and even ex Cardinal players say that St. Louis is still their home: Holliday will be no different. It also helps being in a lineup with and hitting behind the best player in baseball in Albert Pujols. Right now, this team is playing so sluggishly, it is hard to watch. We should have won at least 3 of the 4 games against the Mets, considering 9 key players for them are on the DL, but we lost 3 of 4. PATHETIC! We were embarassed. Our OF's were 2 for 40 in that series. What is this, little league? This is why we need Holliday. The Brewers are now tied with us for first place, the Cubs are right behind them, and the Reds aren't too far back. We need Holliday now and I hope we get him as quickly as possible because every Cards fan know we need him. A deal of Ludwick, Motte, and Brian Anderson for Holliday would be great, but I kinda wish we could get Holliday and keep Ludwick. Ludwick may not put up 37 HR's again, but he definetly has 25 HR potential. Be aggressive Mo, and make a huge statement to the Central division by getting Holliday and the protection for Albert that we need.

who's better?
player 1
.276./.389/.487
player 2
.269/.367/.423
player 3
.250/.349/.470
or player 4
.270/.387/.390

Player 1 = Gary Sheffield
Player 2 = Matt Holliday
Player 3 = Hideki Matsui
Player 4 = Eric Hinske

Yeah I guess Holliday is worth 3 years of Ludwick because he's soooo much better

ludwick is 30 yrs old. pass

motte/perez. A's are loaded with relievers. at AAA alone they have Hrod/Demel/Carignan (when healthy)/Webb/Blevins/Gray etc

Cody - Can we at least compare Holliday to the player that is being discussed (Ludwick):
.226 .300. 421
I'll take Holliday, thanks.

Dear Cody,
Holliday is still a career 300 hitter on the road. And lets not forget that miguel cabrera's BA dropped average dropped 30 points upon his transfer to the AL. Maybe all he needs is another year to adjust to the AL or a retun to the NL to put up his normal beastly numbers (M-cab, 15 homers, 337 this year, career highs in everything except HR's, RBI's).

sure use Ludwick's stats but how can you sell the cards holliday for ludwick ,$7.6MM one of Jason Motte, Chris Perez, and Kyle McClellan and a prospect. it's almost thievery if you think about it. Matt holliday is worth only 1.8 WAR which is equivalent to $8.1 million for the entire season. I just don't think this is a fair trade.

Holliday is a .281 hitter for his career on the road plus he only has a .452 slugging percentage sixty points lower than his numbers at the super friendly confines of coors field. And don't give me that he struggling in oakland's park. He has the same ammount of homeruns there that he has away.

I can't really see Beane going for Ludwick.

I have to find the link, but wasn't it just posted a few days ago that Holliday was very interested in playing for the Cards and would definitely listen to an extension offer if traded there?

here's the link:
http://www.stltoday.com/discussions/sports/joe-strauss-live/LD061909796

Joe Strauss: My information is that Holliday badly wants to play in St. Louis and would be receptive to a long-term arrangement if the Cardinals acquire him.

Cody,

Holliday has a 2.0 WAR so far, and has been worth 8.8 million so far, WAR goes up as the season progresses as long as he doesn't completely suck, which he won't. Plus if you wanna talk WAR, Ludwick's so far this year is .5 and only worth 2.3 million. Motte, Perez and McClellan have a COMBINED WAR of -.2 totalling a worth of 1 million dollars. So Ludwick plus one of those guys and a prospect really isn't an unfair trade. (depending on the prospect of course)

I really don't see the prospect being much more than a guy like Shane Robinson.

A lot of Cardinal fans do not want to see this trade. It is not a terrible trade (other than money wise). I believe that although Holliday is not in Coors anymore, he is still having a down year. I would like this trade so much more if I knew they could get him resigned.

As an A's fan, I'd do it.

1- Ludwick can contribute now, and in 2010-2011. He's a cheap power bat. Complement him and Jack Cust with another good bat, and this team is good to go. With the amount of payroll the A's have coming off the books this offseason, they can go for a third bat to round out the order.

2- you can never, never have too much pitching. The A's could flip one of the young closers this offseason for a haul.

3- Ludwick's offensive numbers this year are poor because of a flukish BABIP. This is exactly what happened to Swisher last year. Even if he puts up the .818 OPS he did in 2007, that controlled for the next 2 years and with his defense is a valuable asset to the A's.

I am not surprised Holliday wants to play for the Cards.

He is .385/.478/1.350 with 5 HRs in 46 PA. I think he would like to play there more.

Fun facts
tOPS
Busch II 186
Fenway 46
Miller 101
GreatUSA 62
Minute Maid 57

And this looks classic Billy Beane. This is a pure buy low on Luddy. No hitter sustains a BABIP of .220. That's gotta come up, and when it does, he's easily an .800 OPS guy who plays plus defense.

If Cust can get out of his funk, that's two rather formidable bats, especially consdering what the A's have pitchingwise.

Sorry that should be Wrigley, not Fenway. His tOPS in Fenway is 154.

Career tOPS by park
Busch II 186 Wrigley 46 Great American 62 Miller 101 Minute Maid 57

"Of course he'll consider an extension. CONSIDER. That's very different from accept. I've heard so many players say they would consider an extension only to leave for more money or more years."

Exactly. Getting out of Oakland helps his extension bids in many ways.

I have to say that the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Giants, and Braves (they shed a lot of payroll after the season) could use an outfielder this offseason. And I'm just counting the big money teams.

A's can find a better deal
maybe reds, braves, yanks, mets, etc. first of all, A's wont accept a sub par deal due to hollidays contract. thats a non issue. Ludwicks 30 something OLDER than holliday. STL keep your relievers, A's dont need them. Give me the 2 picks over an offer that is no different than the offseason.

The birds need to move Ankiel I don't know what you would get 4 him he is mediocre at the plate (streaky)But he is defensively sound as long as there isn't a wall near... They really need to look for an every day 3rd baseman I would like 2 Holliday in the lineup but I would hate to see Ludwick go It seems like a good trade though and they need to do something sooner than later

Id say Billy isnt turning down Ludwick, Perez & McClellan for Holliday. If that deal hits the table its a go.

2 relievers and a 30 something OF, The cards dont even touch their farm system.

perez/mclellan is no different than what A's already have in their bullpen...keep them and replace those with a hitting prospect or 2

mlb:bailey/casilla/ziegler/devine (when healthy next yr)

AAA: gray/webb/blevins/demel/hrod/carignan/marshall/kilby

the last thing A's need are relievers and i'm not convinced ludwich had had his best (career) seasons w/ STL and would regress in AL

What about Ludwick, Glaus & Ankiel for Holliday, Buck & Kennedy?

A's look like
C Suzuki
RF Cust
LF Ludwick
DH Glaus
1B Giambi
CF Ankiel
2B Ellis
SS Cabrera
3B Garciaparra/Hannahan

Cards look like
RF Schumaker/Buck
2B Kennedy
LF Holliday
1B Pujols
CF Rasmus
SS Ryan
C Molina
3B Greene

Better for Oakland, definitely, STL, I think so too...but I feel the Cards would need a prospect to get it done. FYI to everyone, Travis Buck could very easily be packaged in a deal with Holliday, he's been vocal about his lack of playing time and being bumped to AAA to often and is danger of being blacklisted, the A's like Cunningham & Sweeney more anyway. Buck's the kind of player that could become an All-Star if a team in the NL just ran him out there everyday.

PL: I don't think that deal would work for the A's...seeing as Glaus and Ankiel will both be FA's. Also, the Cardinals are looking for a bat to put behind Pujols...the whole idea is to get protection for Pujols, not to move him into the 4 spot. If you can keep Pujols hitting 3rd, you guarantee him the opportunity to hit in the first inning and therefore get him more at bats.

So you think Buck can become an All-Star if he played everyday in the NL, but yet you have the Cards platooning him in right with Skip? Something doesn't add up...

@Yanksallday

Thats just for this year, Skip can play everywhere too, regardless Kennedy is a FA and can be let go because theres no way he will keep hitting like he is this year, Skip goes back to 2B, Buck in RF in '10.

@Billiken
Yep, that deal contains 4 FA's actually, 2 each, but it works out a little more in Oakland's favor because Beane gets his draft picks just like he wanted for Holliday. And sorry, I meant to have Pujols hitting #3 and Holliday #4, my bad, obviously I know about the "get the high OPS guys the most ABs" thats why Cust should have been hitting #2 all along in Oakland (he's slumping hard this year though, ouch). So the deal gets Ludwick traded for Buck and the Cards get the chance to sign Holliday long term. Fair? It kinda is.

Cards dont want Kennedy, they got rid of him in the offseason.

I like duncan + Ankiel + motte+ prospect for holliday.

holliday, rasmus, ludwick playing everyday.

If we dont get holliday i would like to see Perez swapped for brandon wood.

Id swap ankiel for chien ming wang too. Dave duncan with wang... Wow.

But who am i kidding? Its the cardinals.

I really do not like this deal at all for the A's. Ludwick is kinda old and only had one big year. I'd rather take my chances with the draft picks.

If oakland do this trade and get McClellan, Perez and Ludwick, I love Ludwick as a Cardinal fan, and McClellan was a starter in the minors so he can go in the rotation for Oakland. Perez can close and Ludwick can be the DH. For the Cardinals, they get protection for Pujols. The Cardinals will trade either DUncan or Ankiel, probally the latter, for some pitcher to replace Wellemeyer in the rotation and release Wellemeyer. That means Rasmus can start everyday, and Wellemeyer probably go to the Cubs, wherte all the Cardinal rejects go, Marquis, Miles, and Taguchi.

The A's don't need relievers. They need hitting prospects. So you can take Motte and Perez and shove them up your ass.

How 'bout Holliday and Cabrera for Yunel Escobar and a minor leaguer? Think the Braves would go for that? A's need a long-term SS, Braves get rid of the headache plus a SS replacement and the power-hitting OF they need.

PL-

I don't think the Cards take Kennedy back. I don't think TLR would play him, as a lot of why Kennedy was released by them last year had to do with TLR.

And, Ankiel and Glaus will both accept arbitration, especially Glaus (Ankiel is less likely, I wouldn't mind Ankiel accepting). If Glaus accepts, that's over 10MM committed to a guy who might be relegated to 1B/DH.

"How 'bout Holliday and Cabrera for Yunel Escobar and a minor leaguer? Think the Braves would go for that? A's need a long-term SS, Braves get rid of the headache plus a SS replacement and the power-hitting OF they need."

The Braves can't add payroll.

And, Frank Wren should be fired immediately if that deal ever comes to frutition. Even if the A's eat all of Holliday and Cabrera's salary.

Yeah, so our OF's went 1-12 in todays game (including Ludwick's PH AB). This is why we need Holliday. And I hope Mo was watching the game because Albert single handedly won the game for us. I actually have my fingers crossed for this trade going through. Ludwick, Motte, and someone like Anderson or T. Greene for Holliday would be awesome. I'm assuming though if this trade goes through, then the Cards won't be getting Derosa because I don't think both Perez and Motte would be traded.

Morgasm, you can never have too much pitching. You could always trade whichever reliever you get for someone you would need. And I am sure that Motte, Perez, and McClellan are better than at least one or two relievers you have.

melonis rex, I would mind if Ankiel accepted arbitration. He needs to go and hopefully he won't return next year. Actually I am hoping he is gone before the trading deadline.

And I am so tired of Wellemeyer. It's to the point where everytime he is scheduled to pitch, no matter what team its against, I assume that we will lose. He is horrible and last year was a fluke. He needs to get out of the rotation and out of St. Louis because we don't want him anymore. Hopefully, we swing him and Ankiel in a deal for another starter, one that can go longer than 2 and a third innings.

motley14, i agree. i was so nervous today in the early innings of the game. the only reason why i didnt turn it off, because of our team, which albert is our team. i give credit to skip for gettin on base though. ankiel and duncan make me sick. i hate whatching them bat or just out on the field. rasmus is on and off, he left 5 on base today though..but we gotta keep him. wellemeyer has to go. hes is terrible. get him out of st. louis. ludwick needs to also he cant do what he did last year. id say perez/ludwick/ankiel for holliday and a pitching prospect. i still wanna see derosa though... ( but i dont know how)

If a deal goes down for Holliday i think it will include Ryan Ludwick, Chris Perez, Brian Anderson, Jess Todd.

It mite cost us another mid level position player.

If true, the Cards would be getting completely ripped off. I'd rather keep Luddy. Plus, you don't trade with Oakland. Ever. Remember the Mulder trade? How nice would it be to have Dan Haren right now? Go get Aktins for less and keep Ludwick.

Speaking for most A's fans, they dont want an OLDER player than holliday that had a career season. keep the relievers too. everything about that offer does nothing to fill the A's other positional needs. better off taking draft picks

If Wallace is on the table, the A's need to get it done, NOW.

Future 3B for the next 6 years? Yes.

Peter Goddamn Gammons tellin it like it is. You don't bundle spare parts to try and get an All-Star.

will wallace stay at 3b, though?

"will wallace stay at 3b, though?"

I think he can stay for about 2-3 years, assuming he keeps his weight under control.

As long as the SS can play good defense.

Still there's no way the A's don't take that deal if offered.

if the A's say the deal MUST include Wallace, then the Cards should laugh at them and leave

Ya i agree with mitch, if the A's say Wallace has to be included then screw them. I dont want to give up the future for a guy who is barely better than ludwick. I was hestitant with the last offer, no way they give up wallace.

Mitch beat me to it. It's ridiculous to include Wallace or Daryll Jones in any deal right now. Both are only a year or so from the majors.

Giving up Ludwick, (Motte, Perez or McClellan), and a Grade C prospect is plenty. If not, move on.

cards have been talking about getting albert protection for years now. 100 bucks says they do nothing by the deadline!

Cards fans how about Freese, Ludwick, perez and anderson? 4 players seems like too much, but this is more quantity. I still think Freese can be productive. 2008 .306/.361/.550
26 hr
2007 .302/.400/.489 17 hr
He's been old for his level, but he is improving.

I would be more than willing to part with freese.

Mo hang up the phone. Beane is insane now. We might as well go after someone like Aubrey huff or Melvin Mora who have a lower price tag. Then We sign Holliday after the season. Keep the farm intact.

why did it post my comment three times? Darn internet, jk

I can promise you Wallace won't be going to Oak for 1/2 year of Wallace. Maybe if an extension was involved, which isn't going to happen, and even then probably not. Beane will trade him for less than that. It's just posturing.

Beane got the Cardinals with the Mulder/Haren deal, but they got us in the Mcgwire deal. So actually the Mulder deal was payback.

Thez316-Fun fact way back in '97 Ryan Ludwick's brother Eric was sent to oakland in the McGwire deal.

I couldn't even remember who the third guy was, I just remember Blake Stein and T.J. Mathews. I hated the trade then and I hate it now. Which is why if Oakland can't get a #1 or 2 prospect for Holliday I would rather take the draft picks.

Wallace will not be leaving St. Louis in this deal if one is made. I'd give that less than a 1% chance of happening.

If the deal is anything more than Ludwick, Todd, and a no name prospect for Holliday, then hang up on Billy Brainless...

"If the deal is anything more than Ludwick, Todd, and a no name prospect for Holliday, then hang up on Billy Brainless..."

lol, I didn't know asking for the best value possible when trading your players was brainless. Set the bar high.

"SATURDAY, 7:05pm: Peter Gammons tweets (account protected) that any discussions would have to start with Brett Wallace, as the A's don't need to trade Holliday."

Gammons could have just typed something like, "Holliday will not be traded to St. Louis. Asking price is ludicrous."

Seven years of MLB control of Brett Wallace for three months of Matt Holliday and two draft picks?

You don't deal players like Wallace unless you're going to get a controlled, star-quality player in return.

Idiotic. And the irrational love affair with Matt Holliday continues. There's little reason to think that post-Coors Holliday would be a significant upgrade, if an upgrade at all, over Ludwick.

Unbelievable.

If the A's make a deal with Holliday involved with the Cards I would be shocked. All of the offers don't make sense. Ludwick has 1 good year and Cardinal fans think he has trade value? The A's definitely do not need to add relievers either seeing that it is one of the strengths of the organization. I to believe Wallace is to much to ask for Holliday so as an A's fan I don't expect any deal to get done with the Cardinals.

With the Chris Perez for Mark Derosa deal, Chris Perez is obviously off the table. Rick Ankiel, Jason Motte, and a prospect for Holliday and our lineup looks like this,
2B-Schumaker
LF-Holiday
1B- Pujols
3B- Derosa
RF- Ludwick
C- Molina
CF- Rasmus
P- Carpenter(example)
SS- Ryan
