Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that Jason Bay's focusing on baseball for now and sorting out his next contract after the season, when he becomes a free agent. Any number of teams could go after Bay. After all, his OPS is over 1.000 and he's second in the league in both homers and RBI. He'll be 31 when the season ends, so he should have several productive years left. He may be able to command as much as $70MM for five years, as J.D. Drew did. Morosi considers three possible suitors for Bay:

5/70 seems a little light if he can continue to post an OPS of 1000.

I am crazy in thinking the Giants are perfect suitors for Bay? They lose Winn's 8 million, Johnson's 8 million and Lowry's 6 million. Seems like a fit to me.

I agree, Bay seems like an ideal target for the Giants, along with Beltre, I just don't know if Bay would want to leave Boston to go to San Francisco, even though they are on the upswing.

Bay could very well be a difference maker on the Giants and he'd probably be the first major free agent signing of theirs in years who would work out really well. They'd need to go big for him. Perhaps 6 years/100 million, like how the Astros picked up Carlos Lee.

Boston should- and almost certainly will- re-sign Bay, but I don't know that I'd say they 'don't have an obvious player within their system who's ready to replace,' him. I'd shift Drew to left and try Josh Reddick in right. Kid's 22 in Double A and has a 1.002 OPS. He's got the range and speed for center, but the arm to play right- an absolute cannon. Reminds me a little of Nick Markakis, though I don't think he'll hit for average as well as Markakis or post the same kind of walk/OBP numbers, but WILL hit for more power than the Orioles' RF. Just my take. Reddick could be ready for a big league gig by next spring if he keeps rolling at Portland. Still...I'm not suggesting the Sox let Bay walk. Dude's a beast.

Bay to the BRAVES! They'll have quite a bit of money after this season with Huddy/Vazquez being traded or huddy wont have his option picked up. Soriano and Gonzo give us about 8 million as well. Not to mention, we should non-tender FYF.
Thats about 18 to 23 million we would have to add an OF bat and a closer.
Bay with Nasty Nate McLouth and Jason Heyward (best prospect in minors) would be a nasty outfield for the next 4 years.

Bay loves the atmosphere in Boston. He stays in Beantown for say $39M/3 with a mutual for year #4
Posted by: hawkny | June 05, 2009 at 02:10 PM
I would think Bay would be in more of the 5/85 or 6/100 range. He's absolutely flourishing outside of Pittsburgh.
Posted by: The Globalizer | June 05, 2009 at 02:42 PM
I think it's worth mentioning that Bay is as bad or even worse at fielding than Manny Ramirez, and clubs seem to be wising up to defense.

Jordan Schafer?

Bay has been unbelievable and has saved the Red Sox offense from completely tanking due to Papi's struggles. If it's true that the Yankees are looking to add outfield help in the summer, I will be really, really disappointed if we lose Bay. Hopefully the Yankees go after someone else because we really need Bay to resign.

"Hopefully the Yankees go after someone else because we really need Bay to resign."
The Yankees always go after the top FA on the market and in the 2009 case, Bay is the top offensive player and fills a corner OF need for them. Boston may hope that Bay will want to resign with them for less, or pursue Holliday and his devil agent instead if his price has significantly dropped should Bay go to the Yankees.

Come home to Canada Jason! Your home country is calling!

2010
Don't forget Bengie's 6 mill and Dave Roberts 6 mill.
Jason Bay would be a GREAT pickup. A decent 1B as well. Nick Johnson?
Burriss 2B
Renteria SS
Sandoval 3B
Bay LF
Johnson 1B
Rowand CF
Schierholtz RF
Posey C
Not a bad lineup.

I hope Holliday does horrible average this year. The Yankees could probably sign him for a 3/30 deal. Maybe 3/40. Hell be perfect for NYs ballpark. everyone saw what he did in Colorado. He could easily put up those numbers in NY. And it alot better than paying 5/70 for Bay.
I think it would be smart for the Giants to sign Bay. They need the offense. I think he'll either resign with the Sox or with the Giants. I hope the Giants get better so there be some competition in the West.
Posted by: yankfan1 | June 05, 2009 at 03:21 PM
* I meant Holliday be average.
Posted by: yankfan1 | June 05, 2009 at 03:22 PM
Outbid? YOu mean that good ol fashioned competetive bidding will return to MLB this off season? There wasn't any last winter. I guess the Yanks just over pay for whomever they want and the other teams divvy up what's left- and beat them.
Posted by: Tigerdog | June 05, 2009 at 03:45 PM
"According to fangraphs, Holliday has been outperforming Bay once you factor in fielding."
A lot of his shortcomings have been nicely covered up at Fenway where LF is so small and he actually has not looked that bad on the road either, not that he could be mistaken for JD Drew in RF for either his glove, nor arm by any means, but he is adequate on defense at Fenway and much better than Ramirez was.
I have a feeling that if the Sox do not make a move this summer on a controllable power hitting outfielder as protection against Bay leaving, that either Bay, or Holliday will end up in Boston next year with the other in pinstripes Yanksfan1 and think we may have chatted about this before?

I don't agree. Heyward, Schafer and McLouth is a good looking OF. There really isn't much Atlanta has to do, other then wait for Heyward, Freeman, Hanson and Schafer to eventually become impact players on this team. I wonder if they would look into Beltre for 3B, and then move Chipper into LF until Heyward is ready, though there it would seem there would be some overlap where you have 3 guys for two positions. The Braves really need to try to find Chipper's replacement, and besides that, they are pretty much set.

McClouth, McCutchen, and Tabata sounded like a good one, too. cot damn...

If this were 2007 going into 2008 and Bay puts up numbers like .290/38/130, I would agree but not in 2009 going into 2010. Reasons? The economic times have changes and I do not believe that TEE is in the financial position to dole out another $18-20M year contract...for say..5/6 years. Besides Bay is 31 now...a might too old for a long term deal...

Bay's defense has already cost the Red Sox 9 runs this year. How many losses is that the rest of the year, nevermind the length of a contract?

Delete the Yanks from the list of teams bidding for Bay this winter and he will still easily eclipse the 3/39 mark, even if it's just by adding more years. Bay will easily see at least 5 years and a minimum of $13 mil.

Yankees go after what they need just like every other team that plays the FA game.
PLEASE keep this in mind:
winter 2008-2009: Sabathia, Tex and Burnett
winter 2007-2008: No new major FA signed. Resigned Arod, Posada, Pettite and Rivera.
Passed on/didn't sign: Tori Hunter, Andru Jones, Aaron ROwand, Carlos Silva, Mike Lowell
winter 2006-2007: Pettite, Igawa, Kyle Farnsworth
Passed on/couldn't sign: Dice-K, Aramis Ramirez, Soriano, Zito, Bonds, Jason Schmidt, Carlos Lee
winter 2005-2006: Damon, Matsui (resigned)
Passed on/couldn't sign: AJ Burnett, Konerko, Wagner, Garciapara, BJ Ryan
winter 2004-2005: Pavano, Wright, Gordon, Quantrill
Passed on/couldn't sign: Beltran, Beltre, Clemens, Pedro, Ordonez
winter 2003-2004: Sheffield, Gordon, Lofton
Passed on/couldn't sign: Vlad, Bartolo Colon, Tejada, Maddux, Pettite, Milwood, Palmeiro
winter 2002-2003: Matsui,
winter 2001-2002: Giambi
winter 2000-2001: Mussina
Not exactly signing the biggest and most expensive free agent every year.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | June 05, 2009 at 09:25 PM
Personally, I think Bay will let himself get to free agency so he can hear other teams offers before he decides on the Red Sox. The comment he made about how the Red Sox are high on his list basically spells out the fact that there will be no extension before free agency and that the Red Sox will have to compete for his services.
Jason Bay said last year that "playing in Toronto would be a dream come true for any Canadian born player and I hope I get the chance at some point in my career"
Im not saying that's going to be next year but I am absolutely 100% positive without a shadow of a doubt that IF Bay reaches free agency, Rogers and JP will put together an offer that will compete with any team in baseball. They have tonnes of money to spend if they need it and this would be a real exception.
HOWEVER, that being said, there's still a lot to be said for him remaining in Boston because let's face it, this is Boston were talking about. But I think Bay wants to see what kind of moves the Red Sox are going to make for their rotation and to fill the other spots that are going to need filling as well.
I think the Yankees will be more about Holliday than they will be Bay, I dont see Bay in pinstripes but you never know what could happen these days.

Bay is obviously an amazing young ballplayer. He needs to go to a team that could get him a championship. (The main reason why he left Pittsburgh.) I would like to see him either go back to pittsburgh. The main reason for this is that now that McClouth is on the braves, Andrew mccutchen has been on fire. With the outfield of: Nyjer Morgan, Andrew McCutchen, and Jason Bay, the buccos could be unstoppable. Or, I'd like to see him stay in Boston because the people of Boston, love him and respect him. Jason Bay will continue to be clutch throughout his career, and I wish him good luck.

the case is closed the yankees are gonna sign bay for 10 year and thn sign holiday for 12 years and going to trade for torrie hunter...then trade ian kenndy and cano for hanley ramirez uglla josh johson and mayben the prospect and fix our rotation that way...then trade mayben and swisher for chris carpenter and pujols to sure the rotation and line-up...pujols would play dh and 3b in the field and arod moves to second...and move hanley to short and jeter to bench to come and hit and sign hoffman for good measure for about 5 years and 36 million...so the 2010 yankees look as follows if they follow my insider advice.
lineup
jeter SS
tex 1B
bay LF
holiday RF
Arod 3B
Pujols DH
Ramirez SS
Hunter CF
Posada C
Pitching
CC
Carpenter
AJ
Josh johnson
Pettite
bullpen
joba
rivera
marte
coke
hughes
bruney
tomko
and hoffman
2010 record 108-54 and sweep through the playoffs and win the world series.

Jason Bay has already turned down 2 x $14 mil from Boston, so he will also turn down any multiples of $14 mil. I believe he will get a 5 year deal that starts at $18 mil the first year and rises a mil or 2 each year like most other big contracts. I know that sounds high but let's wait and see. Dave in Trail
