Cubs Acquire Jeff Baker, DFA Ryan Freel

12:07pm: In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated Ryan Freel for assignment, according to a team press release. Freel, 33, put up an OPS of .369 in 14 games for the Cubs.

11:27am: ESPN.com's Bruce Levine reports that the Rockies receive right-hander Alberto Alburquerque, who was pitching in A ball for the Cubs. The 23-year-old has struck out 44 and allowed 40 baserunners in nearly 35 innings pitched this year.

8:41am: The Cubs acquired Jeff Baker from the Rockies, according to Yahoo Sports. It's unclear what the Rockies will receive in exchange for the infielder. Baker, 28, has played in just 12 games this year for Colorado, but he posted a respectable .791 OPS in over 100 games last year. He's played all four corner positions in his five-year career, but he's played mostly at second base.

Wow. They did't even wait for him to return after injury. Interesting to see what this means for Atkins as he is now the only other corner utility player on the Rox. I really liked Baker, too bad his injury prevented him to create any type of real trade value.

A utility guy that has played most of the time at 2B. Hendry loves this type of guy.

Rehab assignment in the minors...already an upgrade over Miles or Freel.

Is this the end of Aaron Miles? As in unconditional release.

Season saved!

"Interesting to see what this means for Atkins as he is now the only other corner utility player on the Rox"

What about Ian Stewart?

It should be noted that Baker isn't really a 2B. He's a 3B throughout his minor league career, but he's a good enough athlete that he wasn't a defensive black hole at 2B. He won PotM in 2008 by crushing the baseball, and while his hot streaks are typically .900+ OPS, his cold streaks are pretty bad, and he doesn't have the sheer glove to be a consistent positive influence on the lineup.

He's best at 3B, and he can handle 2B well enough, but he's played all 4 corners for the Rockies in addition to 2B.

Best of luck to him.

Top 3 Jeff Baker moments:

1. RBI Single through the 1B hole during game 3 of the 2007 NLDS to give the Rockies the goahead run.

2. Crushing a PH homer to straightaway CF on opening day, 2007.

3. He batted like .368 during September '06, and his PotM in 2008 - pick one.

RoyalsRetro:

Stewart, despite being cold right now, is still the Rockies 3B going forward. We have enough OF and MI depth that he doesn't need to be utility.

Hurdle and Tracy are very different in this regard. Hurdle will slide his bench players all over the field in interest of getting them starts. Tracy sticks with a consistent lineup and uses his bench players as the occasional spell and PHs, not as a team of utility players juggling around 4 or 5 consistent starters.

As it stands, Atkins has regained the 3B position, but it could just be a setup to get him traded. Stewart will more than likely play as a PH and/or defensive replacement until then, rather than bumping Spilborghs or Smith out of potential starts in the OF or Barmes from 2B.

Guy doesn’t even come off the DL till tomorrow. I thought players on the DL couldn’t be traded. Anyway, reading the note on him, it sounds as if the Rockies were expected to DFA him when they did have to take him off the DL. This just makes it easy for them.

Baker will probably be our new, new 3B until Ramirez returns, with Hoffpauir (hopefully) of Fuld being sent down to make room. Then, when Miles is back (think Monday), Blanco is sent packing and we have the wonderful bench depth of Miles/Fontenot, Fox, Freel, Fuld and Hill

Does anyone else hate that this takes time away from Fox? I don't care if he is below average at 3rd...he can rake.

I can't believe the Rockies got a whole city for Baker. Thats crazy. I sure hope the Isotopes come with the package.

SuzysMan really? Send Blanco down when he gets to every ball, while Aaron Miles sucks. And no that bench help sucks. Fuld is back in Des Moines once Reed comes back, Freel is gone once Aramis is back. Fontenot has not been hitting this year he lost his spot to Blanco. Fox is the only bright spot in that bench

As poor as the Cubs fans consider Baker, it seems to me you got a steal. A 23 year old stuck in SINGLE FREAKING A is a poor trade for someone thats probably one of the better pinch hitters out there and is servicable as a back up 3B or 1B.

I don't consider Baker poor. I just love Fox's bat. Its as simple as that. I guess if Baker gets most of his time at 2nd then sure, as long as it means Miles and Freel are the ones losing time here, not Fox.

Jeff Baker's home/away splits the last 3 years:

Home: .298/.350/.551/.901

Away: .221/.279/.365/.644

Typical Hendry move.

"SuzysMan really? Send Blanco down when he gets to every ball, while Aaron Miles sucks."

Yep, Blacno will go when Miles is activated. Well, unless Hoff goes and then Blanco is around till Baker makes it here. Not sure when we should expect him. No matter, Miles makes a load of cash, both this year and next. They wont release him for Blanco, but they cant keep both. I guess it is possible Fontenot is gone with Miles and Blanco staying, but he is the strongest hitter of the bunch (yes, I realize that isnt saying much)

And yeah, isnt our bench horrendous?

"Does anyone else hate that this takes time away from Fox? I don't care if he is below average at 3rd...he can rake."

Not really. I imagine Fox will still get the ABs in the OF that are currently going to Hoffpauir. But I am also fearful of saying someone can rake just because he sits with a career 7 doubles and 2 home runs. Extreme small sample size, and we just say what it did to Micah, so I am not getting to excited yet.

^ just SAW what it did

(this site needs an edit button)

I always liked Ryan Freel so I hate it for him.

http://panthersfanatic.net/

I was excited for Baker to return, as it would have given a little flexibility to move Atkins, now I'm not sure what the Rockies plan is.

Maybe the Rockies should have moved Baker before they let Koshansky go?

If they move Atkins too who is going to get the call up to back up Helton and Stewart?

Also, right handed bats are kinda rare on the Rockies...especially with rumors of Spilborghs also being traded?

Joe stop spamming your web site on every post you make.

I don't know if I would say what "it did to Micah"...him doing badly isn't much of a bigger sample size than him doing great. I think both are above average big league hitters, but neither play any position very well. However, Fox is probably passable at 3rd, where Micah is not.

Or, I guess we keep Hoffpauir and DFA Freel. Which I hate because it means Fuld is sticking around for a while. Reed being out with back issues, we might need the 3rd CFer. I liked having Freel for the spot as he could cover CF and some in the infield as well. He was like our fixall at the end of the bench that we never used anyway. I dont understand Fuld even being here. But whatever.

ProgMatinee:

Baker won't provide much more than Christian Colonel or Mike McCoy could. This trade was "hey we got a warm body out of this!" rather than just giving him away.

"I don't know if I would say what "it did to Micah"...him doing badly isn't much of a bigger sample size than him doing great."

His small sample size that looked so great evened itself out when given more ABs. I expect the same from Fox. Unlike you, I dont see anything in either that says they are really "above average big league hitters", and I am a tad surprised to hear a fan even say it.

Like Fontenot, they can be serviceable in really small doses. Anything more, and we are probably in trouble.

Magic# : Colonel would probably be a good call up.

How about Ryan Freel to the Twins? I know a light hitting utility player is not exactly what the twins need at the moment, but with freels ability to play multiple positions, the Twins could send Buscher or Tolbert back down to the minors and play Freel at 2nd and 3rd? Freel has put up decent numbers before, and has relatively good speed too.

i always wanted the phils to get ryan freel. tough player.

The Phils supposedly coveted Baker in the offseason, but Colorado said they wanted Kyle Kendrick in return then. Now he goes for a 23-year-old single-A reliever? Philadelphia could have used the bat, considering they're carrying Paul Bako on the roster and using Chris Coste in the exact role Baker would have filled.

That said, Freel would also be a perfect addition - if the Phils can get him, that works for me too.

I like the Jeff Baker addition for the Cubs.

They could use a decent bat off the bench, and Baker has shown some ability to hit.

His home/road splits do concern me (.901 OPS at home in '06-'08, .644 OPS away from Coors), but I'd rather have him on the bench than Aaron Miles or Ryan Freel.

This isn't going to fix the offense, but I think that the only things that can do that are the return of Aramis Ramirez and some improvement from Soriano, Soto, Bradley and Fontenot.

"I am a tad surprised to hear a fan even say it."

So what you are saying is that you are surprised to hear that a fan thinks that Fox and Micah are capable of putting up a 101 OPS+ over a full season? I hardly think that this "fan" is the only one that believes that

Yeah, kind of.

At 26 and 29, if they were above average ML hitters, I cant imagine they would have still be sitting around in our AAA this long. In small sample sizes, I have hope they can provide positive results. Over a full seasons of AB, I cant imagine pitchers wouldn’t take advantage of the holes in their swings. I mean, it is looking more and more like Fukudome might in jeopardy of once more falling under that mark, and neither are better hitters then he is in my mind. Players like Brandon Phillips and Garrett Anderson often struggle to break a 100 OPS+, and I think of them as being better hitters as well. You must just think it is much easier to reach then I.

Keep in mind both Fox and Hoffpauir are older rookies because neither have proven they have developed a position. Both have shown they can hit in the minors and really have nothing more to prove there. I'm not saying either is 'all that', but you can't just look at age as why they did not make it to MLB so far. Both are MLB bench guys or AAAA right now. We don't know yet. The sample is too few of ABs. I do like Fox's compact swing. Obviously, how they adjust to pitchers adjusting to them, will tell all. On a small sample size, Fox seems ok in the field...not pretty, but gets it done.

I would rather see Blanco platooning with Fonteno and spelling Theriot when he needs a day off over Miles. But Miles is owed a lot more money. It's unlikely Hendry cuts Miles since he was the DeRosa replacement.

"I can't believe the Rockies got a whole city for Baker. Thats crazy. I sure hope the Isotopes come with the package."

If you are referring to the Simpsons episode where the Isotopes are moving to Albuquerque, it would be super hilarious because that episode is on right now. and I see you made that post quite a while ago.

I dont want to sound redundant but the whole Miles thing erks me. I never liked him for any team. Even if Blanco isnt producing that well, hes not getting paid. Miles doesnt produce and hes getting paid more. If all the Cubs big money players were producing like we all hoped. No one would care who was playing second base. The 8 hitter is "supposed to" be hitting .230. Not our leadoff. I love DeRosa and wanted him to stay. But with all the talent on the team and the numbers they SHOULD be putting up. That deal wouldnt have been so bad. Even if we still had DeRo and guys like Milton, Kosuke, and Soriano, Soto numbers are what they are. The Cubs still wouldnt be doing that great. DeRosa would be a bright spot but those guys I named need to start earning their pay. I know there is a website that tells you if they are playing up to their contract but just watching them makes me cringe for how lousy they look at times. Soto is starting to hit. But we need some huge step up. Phil Rogers and the whole Zambrano thing wouldnt have been said if there was some runs being scored for the Cubs. To conclude my novel... HURRY UP A-RAM!!!

"I'm not saying either is 'all that', but you can't just look at age as why they did not make it to MLB so far."

Yes, I know why there are the ages they are. But if they were truly better hitters then 50% of the league and we had no use for them, some one else would have taken them from us long ago. Would have brought a very good bullpen arm if nothing else. Or, more likely, would have been taken in the Rule-V. And then you would also have to question Hendry burying hitters that are better then 50% of the league while spending a fortune every single year on outfielders if it was the case. Just cant imagine it is.

The way I see it, we have a couple guys with some talent who can do a solid enough job filling in when needed. Fulltime duty, we might be in for some trouble. Spot starts here and there with some pinch hit appearances, we stand a good chance of being thrilled.

I dont understand Fuld even being here. But whatever.

The reason why Sam Fuld is up is bc hes good Lou finnialy opened his eyes reasted Soriano plus he put in flud so ur asking so what who cares right.
But What Flud did was help the Cubs win he got on base and guse what the cubs won so hes hitting they only do good when they have guys hitting. with Flud in the leadoff spot and soriano resting for a while the cubs are going to bounce back!!!! by the way im a cubs fan GO CUBS P.S. about freel leaving and baker comming give the kid a chance but i did like freels viratility

No offense Wrigleyterror. But Im going to go pound a bunch of Jameson so I can better understand what you wrote. I like that no strike call today in the game.

wooohooo
