« The Other Blue Jays Trade Candidates | Main | Discussion: Evaluating Theo Epstein »
Pedro Gomez of ESPN is reporting that that Nationals are "not on pace" to sign phenom Stephen Strasburg by the August 17 deadline. The information was given to Gomez by a "source close to the negotiations."
In spite of an "ongoing dialogue" with Scott Boras, Strasburg's advisor, the Nats have not made an offer other than the minor league tender that clubs must make within 10 days of drafting a player.
Nats interim GM Mike Rizzo talked to the Washington Post but revealed little, saying that a lot was happening "behind the scenes" but that the Nationals will not negotiate "through the media."

I didn't think the Nats would sign him. His demands are ridiculous.

What "pace" is the right one?
I don't buy it for a second. He'll be a Nat. This is Boras negotiating through the media. I don't buy that the Nats drafted him without planning to give him at least $15 million, and I don't see anyone, much less a pitcher, taking the risk of passing on that much.

I wonder who leaked that... The nats will sign him
Posted by: theredskin | July 21, 2009 at 06:35 PM
Stole the words right out of my mouth.

I think he signs.
It's just not going to be announced and finalized until like a minute before the deadline.
Selig is an idiot.

@James F: Could it be the Nats negotiating through the media?
And yes, what exactly "on pace" means is unclear. I'll keeping digging for more info on this.

Its pointless and expensive for him not to sign since the Nats are going to have the number one pick next year anyway (and number two if he doesn't sign).

I have no problem with Boras but he has derailed some young talent by holding out for the next years draft.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | July 21, 2009 at 06:48 PM
Boras wants to break the Rule4 draft is what his target is anyway. Only if he can get 40M or so does he want this kid to sign and to h@ll with this kid is how he sees it, it's all about his kid and Boras's ego as a power broker. Boras wants to take him to Japan (probably) for a year and try to bring him back as a totally 100% FA and bring him back. I hope that if he does try that, the NPB league twarts him and makes him a 9 year guy there and they get to see him play there for awhile, or force a team to put up a huge posting fee if Strassburg has a hissey fit, Boras starts his usual whining, etc..

If this story is true, the nats better start negotiating better because you don't have his talent come by often
Posted by: PhilliesPhan8 | July 21, 2009 at 06:51 PM
You also don't have an injury risk this big come by often.
If I was Rizzo, I'd be just fine with the first two picks next year.

The Nationals are not going to sign Strasburg because they don't have the money to sign him.
If he doesn't sign with the team, I would love to see Strasburg in a Met uniform. I know that it also might be unlikley, but the Mets have enough money to sign him, so why not sign him.
Posted by: Baseball4ever | July 21, 2009 at 07:07 PM
....because the Mets CAN'T sign him, maybe? That's why not.
Posted by: jdub | July 21, 2009 at 07:10 PM
it would be wonderful if he brought up that crap about going to japan again, i would love to see him go there. i am not familiar with contracts over there, but i doubt he would get more than 20 million on a deal there

@Brian Shephard:
I think these Nats are too stupid and indecisive to negotiate through the media, don't you?
Posted by: James F | July 21, 2009 at 07:19 PM
$15 million?
How about $7.5 million, take it or sit out a year.
Posted by: tuna411 | July 21, 2009 at 07:45 PM
How do the Nats not have the money to sign him? We have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball, and it's only going to get lower once they trade Nick Johnson and get rid of Austin Kearns.

Dear Padres, keep tanking..thanks.
Posted by: Myk13 | July 21, 2009 at 07:56 PM
I was under the impression that even if he went to japan and established residency as boaras is claiming, there is some rule that becuase he was drafted as an amatuer already that he falls under different rules. If i am not mistaken the article said he would have to wait out 4 years to be considered an international FA.
A big risk for a kid who can be pretty set before he even tosses a big league pitch.

Nats made the Second most profit in baseball last year (42.6 million) and lerners worth 3.5 billion... They can afford it...

The only stupid part of the organization resigned in march

Amen.

It's a ploy. He wants to pitch in San Diego.

I am pretty certain Scott Boras will go straight to Hell when he dies...
Posted by: jdd35 | July 22, 2009 at 07:41 AM
Can someone please explain to me what happens if he isn't signed by the deadline? Does he become available for all clubs to bid on or does he go back into the draft next year, etc.??

What the hell are you talking about? They have some of the richest owners. They're worth is around 3.5 billion dollars. If they don't sign Strasburg, its not because of money issues, its the fact that the owners don't want to spend money. Same story as this franchise.
Plus, where the hell did you get the Mets from? No way they can even negotiate with him haha

Boras is a bastard....a real waste of space. I wonder what he really likes and loves? It would be great to destroy everything he is interested in just like he's ruined baseball.
I would love to end up alone in an elevator with him some time. It would be worth whatever penalty I get just to knock his f*cking teeth down his throat.
Posted by: Jat | July 22, 2009 at 08:27 AM
If Boras pushes too hard he'll end up hurting himself in the long run. He has to be careful not to create so much backlash that a slotting system is implemented, because that's the last thing Boras wants.

If he is not signed, he can not play in the MLB system (in other words, it's a foreign league or independent league) and goes back into the draft next year.
The Nationals can not draft him next year unless he gives them permission to.
