There's no such thing as too many links...
- Most fans expressed their displeasure with the move in our comments, but Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus defends the Mets' signing of Angel Berroa.
- ESPN's Keith Law tell tells you everything you need to know about the prospects playing in this year's Futures Game, and then some. The game is tomorrow at 1pm CST.
- Yankees scouting director Damon Oppenheimer comfirmed to NoMaas' Lane Meyer that the team has signed two draft picks, including seventh rounder Sean Black. Black was the highest unsigned pick in the 2006 draft, heading to Seton Hall instead of signing with the Nationals as the 59th overall selection.
- MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports that Pedro Martinez "has said the parties are negotiating a deal," referring to his representatives and the Phillies.
- Jeff Blair of The Globe and Mail says he's "hearing some interest in (Scott) Rolen." He mentions that there are a dozen scouts at tonight's Blue Jays game, including two from the Dodgers.
Nomaas getting an exclusive. ahahahaha

Yankees signed only 2 draft picks? HAHAHA
Posted by: The #1 Pick | July 11, 2009 at 06:16 PM
Have signed. They can still sign them and most likely will.

They signed two draft picks TODAY.

Only way the Dodgers are scouting Rolen is if Toronto is making LA take him in a potential Halladay type deal.
Posted by: oshea2002 | July 11, 2009 at 06:40 PM
why would Toronto force anyone to take Rolen with Halladay? Rolen has decent value by himself he's having a monster year.

"why would Toronto force anyone to take Rolen with Halladay? Rolen has decent value by himself he's having a monster year."
My point exactly. This is not like when the Marlins packaged Mike Lowell with Josh Beckett.

Why would the Dodgers be scouting Rolen unless they would have to lose someone like Loney or Blake in the Halladay deal? Rolen and Blake's numbers are very similar.

Interesting, it must be Alex Rios lol
Dodgers also conveniently called up scott elbert today
Posted by: blu3bomber | July 11, 2009 at 07:02 PM
That's because Broxton's out for an extended period of time. Big toe injury.
Posted by: BaseballBryce | July 11, 2009 at 07:04 PM
nice that KLAW didn't even mention Kyle Drabek pitching in the futures game.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | July 11, 2009 at 07:07 PM
Elbert is up b/c Broxton is out, and Weaver and Kershaw are pitching these next two days.
Posted by: oshea2002 | July 11, 2009 at 07:19 PM
Ya i know but i believe stults is available and more versatile.
I'm just speculating its some type of showcase with all the halladay/rolen rumors flying around
Posted by: blu3bomber | July 11, 2009 at 07:28 PM
Didn't the Dodgers pass up a trade for Rolen a while back because he and Larry Bowa don't get along? What's changed since then?
Posted by: NorCalDodgersFan | July 11, 2009 at 07:34 PM
it might be alex rios, his contract BALLOONS after this year: 08:$0.735M, 09:$5.9M, 10:$9.7M, 11:$12M, 12:$12M, 13:$12.5M, 14:$12.5M, 15:$13.5M club option ($1M buyout)
trading rolen and rios may save the jays from actually giving up Halladay
Posted by: blu3bomber | July 11, 2009 at 07:48 PM
jays also have snider waiting in the minors
Posted by: blu3bomber | July 11, 2009 at 07:50 PM
Snider is not ready to come back up tho, and no he's not getting delt if that is what your hinting at.
Posted by: Devmac | July 11, 2009 at 08:00 PM
Why would we take Rios' contract? And scout Rolen? My guess is its Rolen and Halladay for Loney+ top prospects. Blake at 3B, Rolen at 1B or vice versa...
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | July 11, 2009 at 08:25 PM
Broxton is only out till the ASG, and Elbert is getting a chance to see what he has.
With Rolen rumors in the past, it was more they wanted Kemp+ than Bowa. Im sure they can get along. Also, Rolen makes 12M annually through 2010. With Halladay, thats over 30M they save.
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | July 11, 2009 at 08:29 PM
also, Elbert just pitched 2.2 hitless innings, with only one walk, and 4KS. Good re-debut
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | July 11, 2009 at 08:35 PM
If the Jays are desperate to dump Rios' contract I'm sure the Braves would be interested in the off-season, as long as it doesn't take top prospects. At least I'd be interested

"Yankees signed only 2 draft picks?"
It's early in the signing period with well over a month left and they drafted a toughie in Heathcott, same with Detroit who have not signed either #1-2 and #1 is Jacob Turner, another guy who dropped down only because he is going to get a huge payday, so don't pay any attention to most of the teams with resources and non signed top picks.. They will get them signed more than likely.
You may want to watch out for Texas and Mathew Purke and Tanner Scheppers, drafted in the 1st and supplemental 1st rounds however who are both going to want/get huge paydays if that club is as bad off financially as has been written.

Keith Law writes that "but you'll also hear his name often in trade talks" regarding Alcides Escobar.
I was wondering if there is any substance behind this, considering it has been said that he and Gamel are "untouchable", or if it is just Keith speculating.
Additionally, if there is a possibility he gets traded who do you think the suitors are. I would love a deal focused around him and Buchholz. I dont know what everyone else would think about that though.

Slade Heathcott could be ready in late '10, he's that good.

"nice that KLAW didn't even mention Kyle Drabek pitching in the futures game."
Well, it was also nice that Uncle Charlie took Jayson Werth over Matt Kemp, where the fans elected Victorino over Kemp. Victorino and Werth combined for 4.6 WAR. Kemp has been a 4.3 WAR player on his own to this point.

I guarantee you that Jeff Blair meant Scott Downs, not Scott Rolen when he wrote that. Downs makes a lot of sense for the Dodgers, Rolen makes less than zero sense for them. Either he got his Blue Jay Scotts mixed up, or is kinda making stuff up.
