« Padres Sign Russ Adams | Main | Discussion: What Should The Indians Do? »

Odds & Ends: Halladay, Rays, Indians, Rockies, Draft

With another round of deals today, we're reminded that the trade deadline is just three weeks away. Here's some evening linkage...

  • Joe Haggerty rounds up Peter Gammons' weekly appearance on ESPN Radio's Mike & Mike this morning. Among many other topics, Gammons touched on Roy Halladay, saying that he believes "there’s about a 20 percent chance that Halladay gets traded."
  • MLB.com's Zach Schonbrun writes that Rays owner Stuart Sternberg says the team is unlikely to cut payroll during the season, assuming they stay in the hunt of course.
  • The Indians aren't so lucky. Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer says that when "it comes to setting next year's payroll, the Indians are going to be looking to cut corners because of the economy." He mentions Rafael Betancourt and Kelly Shoppach as candidates to be moved because of their salaries.
  • The Denver Post's Troy Renck says the Rockies are unlikely to move Ryan Spilborghs and "aren't in a hurry" to trade Garrett Atkins.
  • Team president Frank Coonelly refuted a report saying that the Pirates had "essentially completed a deal" with fourth round pick Zack Dodson, according to Dejan Kovacevic.
  • Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports that the Orioles have signed four more draft picks.

How exactly does Gammons decide on 20%?

I don't know how they gauge that... However, when the Cubs didn't trade for Peavy because they didn't have the ammunition, everyone was shocked... It doesn't matter how long they play this game, crazy moves are going to happen and teams are going to make moves that are more and more questionable... It's inevitable...

This has nothing to do with Halladay in particular, but to say that it's only 20 % possible that someone will overpay for Halladay is pretty crazy... It's no sure thing, but Philly has been after him for 2+ yrs... You know they are going to, at least, show serious interest...

I really don't want the newly revamped farm system to be gutted, but I think Ruben is too trigger happen and it's going to happen eventually anyway... Might as well be on a contending team and for the best pitcher in baseball...

In the ESPN report that Olney said the dodgers had 2 scouts, he said a source close to the negotiations that its 50-50...

Peter Gammons lives in Massachusetts and I think that the idea that St. Louis couldn't acquire Halladay without first acquiring a Boston prospect shows him (Gammons) to be more of a homer than a respected journalist. I suspect Gammons has been bought and sold more often than your average street whore.

I wish the Sox would just hire Gammons and replace that skank from SF Watney with him. At least he actually loves this team which isn't exactly a good characteristic for a journalist that should be impartial.

watney looked hotter last year. what happened??

I'm sorry, but does anyone else find it ridiculous 3/4 of the post now are about Roy Holladay? Most of them aren't that important.

Wow, I like Peter just as much as the next guy (which might not mean much nowadays), but he's unquestionably a total homer for the Sox. Is Pete your pops or something?

And CubzWin, Halladay is the best pitcher in the League, and this is a rumors website. He's reportedly being shopped. You connect the dots.

What will it take to get Halladay to the Phillies?

Which of the following packages would get it done:

A)Drabek, Brown or Taylor, Donald or Marson

B)2 of Carrasco, Knapp, Savery, Brown or Taylor, Donald or Marson

C)Happ, Brown or Taylor, Donald or Marson

D)Drabek, Donald and Marson

E)Carrasco, Marson, Donald

none of them. It will probably be A, but it would have to be Brown and Taylor along with the others. Also, it sounds like the Phils are balking at the price, Olney said no one is coming up to amaze them

It's Halladay.

It's not Holiday, Holliday, Holladay, Halliday, or anything else. Holy crap, it's in every topic title, but EVERYONE seems to misspell it. HALLADAY!

Drabek, Brown/Taylor, Donald & Marson will unfortunately probably get Halladay.
Toronto are stupid if they use Phillie for anything other than driving up the price for other teams.
I'd want at least two Grade A prospects, with Phillie they only get one and a bunch of decent prospects.

"I'd want at least two Grade A prospects, with Phillie they only get one and a bunch of decent prospects."

So Baseball America's #17 overall prospects is a "Grade A prospect" while the #23 and #24 ranked prospects are just "a bunch of decent prospects"?
