Odds & Ends: Cubs, Kouzmanoff, Marlins

A tasty handful of Monday evening links...

  • Chris DeLuca of the Chicago Sun-Times gathered a quote from Cubs GM Jim Hendry on the possibility of his club making a move: "We have a pretty good team, and if our guys all play like their capable ... you don’t have to do a whole lot."
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock reports the Padres aren't "getting many hits" from other teams on Kevin Kouzmanoff, but believes that might change soon.
  • According to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon, the Reds have signed four Venezuelan amateurs.
  • Baseball America's Matt Eddy has a rundown of team-by-team minor league transactions from late June.  It's interesting reading for prospect buffs.
  • Will the Marlins be leaving their payroll issues behind when they move into their spanking new facility in 2012?  Carl Hiaasen of the Miami Herald doesn't seem to think so.  He questions whether the club will be able to fill their $634MM, 37,000-seat stadium once the luster wears off.
  • Tommy Rancel of DRaysBay.com has more on Venezuelan third baseman Cesar Perez, who was signed this afternoon by Tampa Bay for $1MM.
  • Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reviews the Ryan Freel trade, noting that the Royals must be labeled as "buyers" as of July 6.  Of course, that could change by the time the July 31 trade deadline rolls around.
  • Remember to tune in for the weekly MLBTR live chat tomorrow at 2pm CST.

I could see the Braves wanting to trade for Kevin Kouzmanoff. Mabie a Manny Acosta or Jeff Bennett type trade?

Chris DeLuca of the Chicago Sun-Times gathered a quote from Cubs GM Jim Hendry on the possibility of his club making a move: "Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits"

I would like to know how the Fish are averaging 16K fans per game, even with selling out all the Yankee games, opening day etc.. It is plainly obvious from watching home game telecasts that pumping up actual seats in the stands on most games is more like 5-6K max and just how any new stadium is going to change that is beyond wild, almost as wild as the Rays and the fans at attendance for non Sox, Yankees games being in the 10-15K max on most occasions and them also trying to con tax payers into an out landish 500M stadium and us to foot the bill.

I really think the Cubs are turning it around!!!! God, I hope im right!!

Why was Neal Cotts placed on the 7-Day DL? He's having Tommy John, last I heard.

Is Bob Dutton nuts? The Royals ARE NOT buyers this year. Heck no. Freel was just DFA'd, they get him, now they're "buyers?" Give me a break.

I'd agree with you, johns, on the Marlin attendance in the new stadium thing, expect for one main thing. It is a DOME. I think the main reason these games aren't attended is because of the heat. With a dome, the problem is easily avoided. I bet you already knew that, but, I think that will make a very noticable difference.

I do however, entirely agree with you on how many people are actually at the park. It is certainly NOT TENS of thousands, just a few grand.

Oh, yes, I forgot to say thank you, Drew (and, to you too, if you ever read this, Matt Eddy)! I love keeping up with prospects, and minor-league transactions. The Baseball America article was great. Thanks very much.

We're here for you, UnbiasedYankee.

cardinals get kevin kouzmanoff padres get brett wallace

Why on Earth would Mozeliak do that? Add in Carrillo, and that's more reasonable.

That was a joke UBYankee.

Wallace is most likely a better hitter right now.

"and if our guys all play like their capable"

An actual journalist wrote that? OMG.

"Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reviews the Ryan Freel trade, noting that the Royals must be labeled as "buyers" as of July 6."

LOL!!! That may be the statement of the year.

The depth is rising in Pads organization when it comes to arm just give us 1 plus arm that is at AA or AAA and you can have Kouz, obviously we aren't talking top 50 prospects in minors here

Regarding the Marlins new stadium. I live in South Florida and try to attend as many games as I can in April and May. But come summer time you can't go to a game. It's 95 degrees, sunny and humid and then in the matter of 15 min. it will be pouring rain. I know that once the new stadium is open I will at least triple the amount of games I go to.

i guess they cubs can get kk but they need to start moving cause the giants will get the wild card and the cardinals are'nt backing down.
