5:30pm: The haul for Lugo is bigger than originally thought. The Sox receive a player to be named later or cash along with Duncan, according to the team's press release.
3:32pm: Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will trade Chris Duncan to the Red Sox for Julio Lugo. Via Twitter Miklasz says the Red Sox will still pay Lugo's salary and Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald agrees.
Duncan has a career .851 OPS against right-handers and is under team control through 2012. Reid Laymance of the Post-Dispatch says the Red Sox are expected to assign Duncan to Triple A Pawtucket.

This means Ankiel, Rasmus, Ludwick all the time now, correct?

HAHAHHAHAAHA, red sox got a steal with this one, im a brewers and yankees fan but a great pickup for the sox
Posted by: jose mchung | July 22, 2009 at 04:33 PM
Great pickup for the Sox? Are you freaking kidding me? Duncan sucks.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | July 22, 2009 at 04:34 PM
Ben, if you read the original post again from Viva El Birdos, the trade did not happen. Chris Duncan was instead optioned to Triple-A because the Red Sox had instead acquired Adam LaRoche.

Posted by: CarniifeX | July 22, 2009 at 04:36 PM
It's a great pickup for the Sox because no matter how bad Duncan sucks, Lugo will out-suck him.
Posted by: GP | July 22, 2009 at 04:36 PM
Carnifex, that was earlier today...this thread about Duncan being traded was just posted.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | July 22, 2009 at 04:37 PM
Thanks Cardsfan387 for clearing that up. I had aso seen on other sites he was traded so I was getting somewhat confused.
I think it's a good deal for both teams. Although I don't know where Duncan will fit in? Maybe against some righties because of the struggles Jason Bay has gone trough of late? I don't know.
Posted by: CarniifeX | July 22, 2009 at 04:39 PM
Sources indicate that the Sox will still be responsible for the remaining $13.5 million on his contract, but by dealing him, they at least get a body in return. It’s expected that Duncan, 27, will be assigned to Pawtucket.

This is such bullshit, stop giving away players to the Red Sox for free.
Posted by: Thee4stringking | July 22, 2009 at 04:41 PM
It only makes sense because Lugo is coming for free.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | July 22, 2009 at 04:42 PM
WOW what a steal of a deal for the Red Sox. Duncan is one of the least played and most under rated guys out there. Watch him mash with a change of scenery.
Posted by: xethicx | July 22, 2009 at 04:42 PM
Entertaining. Good deal for both sides IMO. I assume this means Kotsay is gone to make room for LaRoche.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 22, 2009 at 04:43 PM
Are you guys not reading the link's source. The last line says this deal did not happen.
Posted by: Chris | July 22, 2009 at 04:43 PM
Duncan was told he was being traded last night.
Today, despite knowing he was being traded, Mozeliak denied a deal was in place. That is when I had to state that something must have fallen through.
Truth is, Duncan had to agree to be sent down, Tony and Dave had to be coaxed and the deal had to be completely finalized.
Posted by: HL | July 22, 2009 at 04:45 PM
I like this deal. Duncan in a Cubs killer, and I'm glad to get him out of the division.

looks like a deal to me
Posted by: Roy Hobbs | July 22, 2009 at 04:47 PM
you would think someone else would report this. I'm dumbfounded, if true, that anyone would give up anything for julio lugo. amazing. Sox players take less than market value deals, while other teams give them players and take their crap. wow.

ooops didnt see that someone already posted that link

Cardinals option Duncan to Triple-A
Slumping utilityman sent down; infielder Barden recalled
This is right from the Cardinal's Official website
Posted by: CubCrazy | July 22, 2009 at 04:48 PM
Of course the mets don't try to upgrade thier SS position while reyes is out. I love my team and will always support them but man this organization is in shambles, bad stadium choices, unintelligent trades, crazy VP's and clueless Brooklyn Dodger fans as owners. Julio Lugo would of been a nice upgrade over Alex Cora. We could of had Alex Cora come off the bench as he really is not a starter.....well lets go mets in 2010
Posted by: Metsfanatic79 | July 22, 2009 at 04:48 PM
The Cardinals will get Julio Lugo for free the next two season.
Lugo had to clear waivers. Chris Duncan was already a Red Sox property last night.
Posted by: HL | July 22, 2009 at 04:49 PM
"Steal of a deal." Are we talking about Chris Duncan? (1) Duncan had surgery on a career-threatening neck injury last season, so his future is by no means bright. (2) Duncan strikes out a lot, which limits his offensive upside. (3) Duncan's power, which is basically his only good attribute, has disappeared this season. (4) Duncan's glove is horrible.
I don't see this as a steal for the Red Sox; more like a double-dump, with some potential that it could work out sort of OK for either side.
Posted by: mullin | July 22, 2009 at 04:49 PM
This is like when the Sox dealt Wily Mo Pena to the Nats for Chris Carter. Epstein salvaged something out of his mess. If Duncan can turn things around in the next few years, he could be used in a deal later on down the road.
Posted by: Gstill45 | July 22, 2009 at 04:50 PM
I am crying in laughter. Duncan is the worst player on a major league roster. He's batting .227. Has 5HR in 260 ABs, or one per 52 ABs. And is hands down the worst fielder in baseball atleast in the outfield. He makes soriano and dunn seem like gold glovers. Not to mention STL doesn't pay a dime of lugo's salary. STL got better optioning him to memphis... got even better with this trade.
Posted by: Boylanca | July 22, 2009 at 04:53 PM
Steal of a deal for the Red Sox? Chris Duncan has been TERRIBLE since April. If he can't hit, he's the most worthless player in baseball because he's bad defensively.
Last 7 days: .111 OPS (.000 SLG&)
last 14 days: .200 OPS (.000 SLG%)
last 28 days: .406 OPS (.108 SLG%)
He had a .675 OPS in May, a .608 OPS in June, and a .294 OPS in July.
Might be the worst hitter in baseball right now. Well, Ankiel might give him a run for his money.
Posted by: Cardsfan914 | July 22, 2009 at 04:53 PM
Thank God.
Duncan is terrible. You people saying the Red Sox got a steal have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. Duncan is about as worthless as an MLB player can get. Lugo at least fills a hole, and if the Cards aren't responsible for his contract then its a good deal. Hell, Duncan probably shouldn't even be in the MLB with his back. At least he can DH in the AL. Good swap of crappy players. Maybe a change of scenery will do both some good.
Also, if this did go through it shows Moz has a set of nuts on him. TLR almost went into tears the other night defending Dunc and he is Dave's son.

Epic win for the Red Sox. They were on the hook for all his $ regardless. The fact they got a a player back is just icing.
Posted by: BoSox | July 22, 2009 at 04:54 PM
Hellooo... the sox can't use him as a DH, they have ortiz. Sox fans, you just got the worst player on an MLB roster.
Posted by: Boylanca | July 22, 2009 at 04:57 PM
Overall good deal for the Cards. Lugo's worth about $3M or so per season, and they get him for free.
Epic win for the Sox? Sure, I guess it's better than just releasing him. The Cards still make out better in the deal.
Posted by: bobo | July 22, 2009 at 04:59 PM
BoSox - When you get back a player with negative value, that's not an "epic win." Combine Duncan's laughable defense with his anemic offense, and you come away with an epic fail.
Posted by: mullin | July 22, 2009 at 04:59 PM
Duncan will be fulled healed from his injury next year and may return to showing power.
With Lowell potentially being done and LaRoche leaving next year (possibly), Youk can move to 3rd and Duncan could play 1B if need be.
If his bat is healthy (remember, he had a broken neck) he can be valuable at his natural position of 1B.
Posted by: HL | July 22, 2009 at 04:59 PM
Until Matt Leach of Stlcardinals.com reports this, this deal is all speculation. I'll believe this deal has happened when more outlets (ESPN, CBS, FOXSPORTS) report this and mlb.com confirms this.
Remember last year, Jarrod Washburn was supposedly traded to the Cardinals last August and the next day Mozeliak refuted the information.
Besides, how does this deal help either side? The Red Sox not only have to eat Lugo's salary, they have to pay Duncan as well, and since they just acquired Jason Bay's old buddy, Adam LaRoche to be their first baseman, there isn't going to be any PT for Duncan there. Duncan replacing Bay in LF is obviously not going to happen, and Duncan replacing Big Papi as the DH is obviously not going to happen either.
Meanwhile, the Cards bring in Lugo, who all around has been borderline average at best both offensively and defensively. Makes no sense to me. The Cards already have Brendan Ryan playing well at short, and have depth with Khalil Greene (when he comes off the DL) and Pete Kozma in the minors if he were to be brought up.
Posted by: BKuGotIt | July 22, 2009 at 05:00 PM
Not to mention Tyler Greene in the minors at SS as well. If this deal is real one, then it is also a stupid one.
Posted by: BKuGotIt | July 22, 2009 at 05:03 PM
HL -- that's a hell of a lot of "ifs." You've been reading too much Peter "if then if" Gammons. Granted, losing Lugo is no big loss for the Red Sox, but the odds that Duncan can "return to his old form" after essentially breaking his neck are slim-to-none. It's hard enough to maintain success as a hitter when you don't have a career-threatening knee injury; when you do, it's basically impossible. Optimism abounds for Sox fans; my guess is, Duncan never amounts to squat in Beantown.
Posted by: mullin | July 22, 2009 at 05:03 PM
A swap of talentless baseball player for talentless baseball player. Love it!

"Julio Lugo would of been a nice upgrade over Alex Cora. We could of had Alex Cora come off the bench as he really is not a starter.....well lets go mets in 2010"
I agree with all this, but the thing is, the Mets are done. If Lugo came here for free, fine, but Duncan is an asset. The Mets should not be giving anything up for a guy like that because they aren't winning this year anyway. Why move guys who have even a tiny bit of value for a guy who you aren't going to use in 2010?
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 22, 2009 at 05:05 PM
This isn't epic or anything and no one got a steal. The Red Sox got something small, for nothing. Duncan will likely got to Pawtucket. For 825K a year, I don't care if Duncan poops on home plate. It's better than Lugo wiping his ass with 9MM for pooping on home plate.
Posted by: Kevinfoley46 | July 22, 2009 at 05:11 PM
Atleast, Lugo can play 2nd and Shu can play left field. STL can bench Ankiel. Like I say on the STL paper, Glaus and Greene are on their way back, and then I see the last of Thurston in the starting line-up.

Makes sense, I agree with that, but we got a distant shot at the wild card...and a report came out today that Cora reaggravated his thumb...so now we have freakin Angel berroa playing SS tonight, not sure of Coras' status, I would rather have Lugo here until Reyes comes back, if he comes back. I am tried of watching this triple A team
Posted by: Metsfanatic79 | July 22, 2009 at 05:12 PM
Cards came out on top. they dumped a small piece of salary and got a player for free for the next two years. im sure duncan would make around 1M next year.
And who knows maybe lugo is part of the Halladay trade......LMAO (but it could be possible)
Posted by: bigrob3737 | July 22, 2009 at 05:14 PM

So instead you're paying 9.8 mil for Lugo to poop on home plate and Duncan to do nothing?

Excellent job by Theo, how he talked anyone into giving him anything at all for Lugo is beyond me!
Posted by: gobosox00 | July 22, 2009 at 05:31 PM
gobosox, Stl wanted to give up Duncan. He is a bad hitter and a worst defender. Even at 1st base. Lugo is a bunch better then Duncan, on 1 reason, Lugo can play more then 1 position, Duncan can not even play left field without making a mistake. He was reported that he is getting out because the pitchers are not throwing him fastballs. He has so many holes in his swings.

No this means now that Mark DeRosa in left, Rasmus in center, Ludwick in Right, and Ankiel as a utility outfielder. DeRosa will play left once Glaus comes back and plays third.
Posted by: Ryan | July 22, 2009 at 05:42 PM
Duncan is not showing any signs of getting better. This guys is simply terrible right now. Automatic out. It's a good deal for the Cardinals no matter who they get in return. I no longer have to watch this guy consistantly hit weak ground balls to the second baseman! No more watching this guy look completely lost in the outfield! No more putting this guy in the lineup because Dave is his Dad! If the Red Sox can fix this guy... good for them! It's not likely. I doubt that Lugo is a huge player in the Cards lineup this year. Maybe he can come off the bench. Maybe he does nothing. I don't care. Duncan is gone!

Can we please get this person banned, or in the very least, have his posts deleted? He does nothing more then show up in every Red Sox post spilling this race crud. He does not comment on ability, contracts, players roles, player projections, or anything else having to do with baseball. He solely claims the are racist in each and every post having to do with them.
I can not imagine this website chooses to have people attempting to create race wars over a single persons perception. Considering the site has continualy stated they wanted to stay away from issues such as politics, religion or drug use/criminal behavioral issues, I cant see how you would want this persons gibberish around anymore then we all do. And you can look at his post history to see what I mean:
"V-Mart is Latin and the Red Sox are currently dumping Latin players. So why would they possibly trade for one?"
"So the Red Sox trade away another Latin kid and fill his spot with another white guy. No surprise there."
"Dye's right handed. He'd be ideal for Fenway. For obvious reason though, Boston won't sign Dye if they fail to resign Bay."
"And yet another Dominican gets run out of town in Boston. Next to go? David Ortiz!"
"It's July in Boston, which means it's once again time to play "Smash the Dominican Pinata." The rules of this game are simple. (1) Pick a Dominican player on the Red Sox roster. (2) Now, bash him mercilessly. (3) Isolate and scrutinize his every deficiency. (4) Threaten to waive him. (5) Question his patriotism. (6) Eventually, replace him with a white guy who attended a Pac Ten college. Once finished, repeat steps 1 through 6 until you make candy fly out Big Papi's butt."
"All I'm saying is that if the Red Sox get any whiter, they'll have to trade in their batting helmets for hoods."
We are all tired of his racism! Can someone do something about it now???

I think this deal is a prelude to another move for the Sox. Duncan exudes none of the things that Theo values (power, defense or obp). I think this move was made to create a roster spot for LaRoche. Plus the Sox seem pretty set in the OF w/ Ellsburt, Drew, Kotsay and Baldelli.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 22, 2009 at 05:50 PM
I'm not sure if a single person in this thread has made a valid case for either one of these players being traded. Sox still have to pay Lugo's salary. Cards have middle infield with two reject backups (Lugo and Greene). Somebody explain where this makes any sense. Only thing even close to it is the Cards just dumped 800k in salaray.
The only thing I can theorize in my mind about this is the Cards plan to trade Ankiel, throw Skip Schumaker back in the OF, move De Rosa to 3rd base and platoon Greene, Ryan, and Lugo in the middle infield positions.
Posted by: bravobirds | July 22, 2009 at 05:55 PM
I agree that this is probably the wrong forum for "racial rants", and by NO MEANS am I defending the guy, but can you really be called racist for accusing someone else of racism?
Except for this comment of course...playing the KKK card? Not fair dude.

Who say the Cardinals will not be in the trading market. Getting Lugo also means that Breden Ryan can be on the trading block.
Posted by: Knuffy | July 22, 2009 at 05:59 PM
I'd like to see what/if the yankees/rays do to counter these moves. As a sox fan, I would LOVE to see the yanks get holliday for some prospects (Chamberlain, Hughes?) and have holliday continue to struggle only to leave NY at the end of the season.

In Lugo's defense, while his glove is not very good, he is an upgrade over Greene, Ryan and Thurston. He had limited at bats (109) but is hitting .284/.352 and his last few years support that as non-flukish.
For Boston, obviously he was a superfluous IF player making tons of money.
Pros for St. Louis: An offensive upgrade at SS. A player w/ post-season experience.
Cons for St. Louis: Might cause obvious tension seeing as how his dad is a coach. Other than that, no real downside.
Pros for Boston: Freed up a roster spot for LaRoche thus negating the need to DFA or use an option on a player. Meanwhile, the Sox can afford to sit on Duncan and see if he can contribute later this year nor possibly next year.
Cons for Boston: Less infield depth in case Lowrie or Greene gets hurt.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 22, 2009 at 06:09 PM
As has been alluded to in at least two comments (about trading Lugo or Ryan), perhaps this is a prelude to a second deal for St. Louis. Maybe the Cards want to fortify their SS position depth so as to trade away Ryan, Greene (Tyler), Kouzma, etc. as part of a package for a pitcher? We'll see...
Posted by: Kasafran | July 22, 2009 at 06:11 PM
Ok if this is true then Epstein is God! Lugo is not a good player, Duncan has big power and is still relatively young. How does Boston get a bigger return for Lugo than the pirates got for Laroche???? This guy was about to be released. They also got a second player? I don't care if this second player is a corpse! What the hell is going on???

I was not all that familar with Lugo's stats until I just looked them up. You are 100% right, he is an upgrade over Greene, Thurston, and Ryan. I think this was a setup move for the Cardinals.
Here is what I would do if I was Mozelik. Cardinals trade Rick Ankiel, Brett Wallace, Todd Wellmeyer and Mark De Rosa for Scott Rolen and Roy Halladay and possibly PTBNL.
Cards OF: Ryan Ludwick, Colby Rasmus, Skip Schumaker.
Cards Middle Infield: Brendan Ryan and Julio Lugo.
Cards Corners: Pujols and Rolen.
Cather: Yadi.
Pithing Rotation: Halladay, Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse, Pinero.
Anybody agree?
Posted by: bravobirds | July 22, 2009 at 06:20 PM
The Cardinals will not get Rolen back, sorry.
Posted by: Knuffy | July 22, 2009 at 06:29 PM
I would be shocked if Duncan ever saw the field of Fenway park. The way Theo values metrics and defense I ust don't see him being an OF'er for Boston. Seeing as how 1B and DH are already pretty crowded (Youks, LaRoche, Ortiz and now maybe Lowell) I would be surprised if he were called up this year.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 22, 2009 at 06:36 PM
"Ok if this is true then Epstein is God! Lugo is not a good player, Duncan has big power and is still relatively young. How does Boston get a bigger return for Lugo than the pirates got for Laroche????"
JoeMorgan: Are you nuts? First of all, Duncan HAD big power. This year: 5 HRs in over 250 ABs. If that's big power, I want to know what isn't big power. Second of all, the Red Sox are paying all of Lugo's salary, whereas the Pirates are paying NONE of LaRoche's salary. This obviously affects the return. And third of all, I'd take a backup catcher with good defensive skills (Diaz, one of the two players the Pirates got for LaRoche) over a backup 1B/LF, with no glove (Duncan's defense is downright atrocious) and little power, who strikes out over 25% of the time.
Yet another delusional Red Sox fan who thinks Theo is God. Let me tell you, as an A's fan who used to think Billy Beane was the shizz, you should get rid of any notion that Theo is God right quick (after all, didn't Theo sign Lugo to this albatross of a deal in the first place?).
Posted by: mullin | July 22, 2009 at 06:45 PM
Don't know about this PTBNL, though I can't imagine it being anyone significant.
Hopefully Lugo is one of those guys that just plays better in the NL.
Posted by: RonMexico | July 22, 2009 at 06:48 PM
I haven't been reading the site for long, but what an oddly cynical group for ostensibly well-read baseball fans (generalizing).
Lugo is not horrible. He has seen a rapid and significant decline in his production and levelled off as a sort of injury-prone SS with STREAKY --- as opposed to just bad -- defense. He can still hit (under .300 but probably not below .260) and runs very well.
Duncan's power ceiling remains significantly higher than most. He is returning to AAA, where a player at his age and with his problems belongs. The Sox don't covet his brand of power, but tons of teams do. He's an asset in this sense if not in any other.
Gaining an asset when you'd otherwise simply lose a player (still paying his salary) is a good deal.
Gaining an SS with the profile I just described -- free of charge -- is a good deal.
It seems like many here imbue their commentary with pre-emptive reactions to the millions of fans who over-hype and overrate every player and every deal. Wisdom and that sence of balance are good, but maybe take some care not to simply swing the pendulum all the way over to the place where only the top %5 of players are worth speaking positively about.
That kind of baseball's just as bad.
Posted by: The Reverend Mister Black | July 22, 2009 at 06:50 PM
Not a Red Sox fan by any means. Lugo was DFA that means in a couple days he would have been free! Getting anything for this guy is a huge bonus. Duncan had back surgery so that power has dropped but there is a good chance he can regain it. + another player that is a lot to get back for a player you were going to release!
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | July 22, 2009 at 06:57 PM
I'll take anyone other than Lugo. Give me the worst player in Low class-a, and I'll trade Lugo for him.

“I agree that this is probably the wrong forum for "racial rants", and by NO MEANS am I defending the guy, but can you really be called racist for accusing someone else of racism?”
When everything you see is factored solely on the race of the people involved, then yes, you are being racist just the same. What he is attempting to force on people is really no different then say, J.D. Drew walking into a 7-11 and stating “of course, no white guy behind the counter”.
The guy is screaming racism because a AA shortstop with next to no talent was included in a package for one of only 3-4 available 1B in the game (all of which are “white” – LaRoche, Huff, Johnson, Branyan). That is reverse racism at its finest.
“Not a Red Sox fan by any means. Lugo was DFA that means in a couple days he would have been free! Getting anything for this guy is a huge bonus. Duncan had back surgery so that power has dropped but there is a good chance he can regain it. + another player that is a lot to get back for a player you were going to release!”
Duncan was on the verge of being released as well, so not sure what you mean. Duncan has not been the same since his injury; and nothing, anywhere, shows he will come out of it.
The Red Sox are paying either the entire salary, and receiving a PTNL, or paying almost all the salary and getting just Duncan. You can probably assume the “cash” aspect of it is prorated League Minimum this year, and League Minimum for 2010 (what the Cards would have to pay if they waited for him to be “free” as you put it.. That 500-600K is worth a no-body minor leaguer to many teams. That while the Red Sox are also taking on a guy who is being demoted from the majors to the minors for lack of ability. I cant see how you feel this is some kind of haul.

What made Lugo so bad was the contract. Hell if Soriano was free he would be amazing. Lugo isn't a very good player, but hes not bad and plays a position of need for the cards.
But to be clear, nobody wins this deal. The Red Sox are still paying lugo, so how do they win? Because they got a player who will most likely never play for their MLB team? Oh score! They lose, because they are still paying Lugo. Getting rid of him was merely for a roster spot and nothing more. Duncan isnt very young anymore and was just an awful player, I know true Red Sox fans know they didnt get much, and didnt give up much.

Duncan is a natural first baseman/DH. He obviously would never get time there in St. Louis. Maybe with less time trying to learn a position he's not right for he'll be able to straighten out his hitting. I've also heard he's not 100% health-wise, so a stint in AAA will do him some good. He has plenty of upside if given the opportunity to succeed (which, let's be honest, he didn't have in St. Louis with Mr. Pujols at 1B).
The Cards have to be thinking Lugo will just need a change of scenery. I hope that's the case.
I really don't understand the PTBNL. This looks like a deal for the BoSox (although certainly not a 'steal' as Duncan has yet to live up to his potential and the PTBNL has yet to be named). Boston appeared to be resigned to letting Lugo go for nothing and they've got something at least...
Another note: Glaus might be the next to be traded as he is in a similar situation. I don't believe he'll be able to throw properly this year and therefore would have decent value to an AL team as a 1B/DH. Hopefully he'll have success over there if traded as well. It's just a shame to see players labor in a situation where they're not given a fair shot.

It's all a matter of context, sure. If you are imagining the alternative as never-having-signed Lugo or having some other team take his contract, then sure, this deal sucks.
In fact, though, the alternative was to get nothing for him and pay him anyway. Instead, they got what is, at worst, a potential power asset.
The upside for the cards is clear. In context, both win here.

Um, no? At worst they get....nothing? Wouldnt that be the worst case? And the most likely senerio? I'm not rooting against the guy, I like the Red Sox, but the deal is basically like the Sox getting nothing. I'm not really how you assume at worst the Sox get a power hitter, when this season he hasnt even done that.
Here is why I believe he wont even make the team. The Sox dont need a backup 1b because they have Kotsay. Now they need Kotsay because if Baldelli gets hurt hes their insurance for CF. And Kotsay is much better at 1st than Duncan. Im sure Theo isn't expecting much from Duncan, however anything can happen.

Turd for turd. At least both sides may have gotten a chance at slight help. A very minute chance.

"Here is what I would do if I was Mozelik. Cardinals trade Rick Ankiel, Brett Wallace, Todd Wellmeyer and Mark De Rosa for Scott Rolen and Roy Halladay and possibly PTBNL."
There are a few reasons this would not work. First, you might not have known this so I will let you know. Rollen and LaRussa dislike each other. I use the term 'dislike' in gentle terms. It got bad and very personal between Rollen and LaRusa last time. I seriously doubt they kissed and made up.

Ok, I have just spent some time laughing at most of the posts here...
Bottom line is the cards get better by getting Duncan off the roster. I was ecstatic when I heard he was moved down to Memphis then rejoiced when I found out about this trade...
Im not sure what they are doing (possible trades including ryan/lugo) but what I do know is as long as this gets Thurston out of the lineup I will be happy... an example of why I want him out would be tonights game...
Ps. Im not sure who said earlier that Lugo would be better at short than Ryan... but thats a joke

For whomever says that Lugo will be crap for the Cards is forgetting that Lugo will be coached now by Jose Oquendo. Just take a good long look at what Oquendo has done with Skip Schumaker in less than 1/2 of the season. I'll very gladly take 2 free years of Lugo versus the pain of watching Duncan offensively and defensively.

"For whomever says that Lugo will be crap for the Cards is forgetting that Lugo will be coached now by Jose Oquendo."
Not sure how you can coach a loss of range El Hombre 5. It's not the errors, which the Sox fully expected when they signed him to begin with, he always had a reputation of excellent range, just made errors with erratic arm, but the severe injuries the last 2 years have taken every last bit of his range away.
Look at his SB total for example. His 1st year in Boston, he stole 33 bases and was caught only 5 times, his speed was excellent, last year after the miniscus (spelling) he lost virtually all the speed and range, then this year yet another devastating knee injury that has left him virtually incapable of moving 2 steps either way at SS. STL fans will see soon enough how much of a defensive albatross they have, not only does he still make the "bone headed" errors he always did, but he can't even get to plays that a below average SS would to begin with and he goes to the plate, crouches down trying to draw walk, afraid to hit. He never had anything but gap power at bat and just can't see why STL saw him as a fit, with the fast infield they have. I really pity the Cardinal pitchers when he is on the mound.
Posted by: johns | July 23, 2009 at 02:07 AM
Brendan Ryan is the Cardinals starting shortstop for the foreseeable future. The guy has a slick glove and isn't horrible at the plate.
Hopefully, Lugo will only replace left-handed hitting Joe Thurston off the bench. Thurston has been terrible this year but all of the Cardinals' other middle infielder candidates hit from the right side. (Descalso won't get a look until spring training.)
I like the "turd for turd" description. The Cardinals just needed a heathier turd in a different position. I assume it's the same for the Red Sox.

That is how I see it. Duncan looks exactly like Chris Carter, Bailey and McAnulty already at AAA Pawtucket and Jonathon VanEvery they just released as nothing but a AAAA retread type. Not good enough to stick on a MLB roster and too old to be a prospect.
Sox probably should have gone ahead and released Lugo, since the guys mentioned above are the exact same types.. Power guys that really stink just as bad as Duncan at the MLB level and Aaron Bates at the Sox AAA level will only maybe get blocked if they decide to call this guy up next time around.

MESSAGE TO TLR:
OVER THESE LAST 13 YEARS WITH THE CARDS, YOU HAVE DONE WELL STATISTICALLY. HOWEVER; I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LOOKS PAST THE NUMBERS AND SAYS TO ONESELF...HUH? IN '96, YOU MADE YOUR FIRST BIG MISTAKE, BY DISRESPECTING ONE OF THE MOST LOVED PLAYERS IN OZZIE SMITH. HIS FINAL YEAR AS A CARDINAL AND YOU SHUNNED HIM BY A YOUNGER OVERATED ROYCE CLAYTON. OZZIE'S FINAL AT BAT WAS A POP UP ON THIRD BASE SIDE FOR A OUT. HE SHOULD OF PLAYED ALL YEAR, WITH ROYCE AS A RARE BACKUP ON A OFF DAY. IT TAKES A REAL ASS TO UPSET OZZIE...BUT YOU SUCCEEDED. THE CARDINAL NATION HAS A REPUTATION OF THE BEST FANS IN THE GAME. ITS TRUE! YEARS HAVE PAST AND BRUISED "SOME" FAITH IN UPPER MANAGEMENT HOWEVER. DO NOT FORGET TLR...WE PAY YOUR SALARIES!!! THE ODDACITY OF RAISING UP AT SOME DISGRUNTLE FANS IS A NO..NO. I AGREE IF A PLAYER IS STRUGGLING, YOU MUST RUN HIM OUT THERE TO KEEP CONFIDENCE UP. AFTER A WHILE, YOU HAVE TO TAKE OTHER MEASURES. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITES. WHEN MILWAKEE MAKES A MAJOR MOVE IN A PENNANT RACE, WE EXPECT JOHNNY MO TO TOP IT. OR ANY TEAM IN THE CENTRAL FOR THAT MATTER. I CANNOT SPEAK FOR ALL CARDINAL NATION...BUT I CAN FOR MANY LIKEMINDED. I HOPE THIS FINDS YOU GONE AFTER THIS YEAR FOR GOOD. IM SURE THAT MEANS DAVE WILL BE GOING TOO. I LIKE DAVE..I THINK HE IS A AMAZING COACH. IM IN FAVOR OF BRINGING BACK HERZOG. YOUR UNUSUAL STYLE OF MANAGING WORKS ALOT. BUT IT IS UNORTHADOX IN MANY WAYS. ROLEN HAD ISSUES IN PHILLY GRANTED, AND ISSUES WITH YOU. HOW IS IT, THAT IT IS SO EASY TO PISS PEOPLE OFF THAT PLAY FOR YOU? IS IT ALWAYS THEIR FAULT? WE MAKE YOU VOMIT? TONY; FEELING IS MUTUAL HERE. CHRIS NEEDED A CHANGE OF VENUE. YOU THINK ITS BAD BEING BOOED HERE. HE IS HEADED TO BOSTON.LOL THIS WAS A LUXURY CAMP COMPARED TO THEM. WE EXPECT A WINNING FRANCHISE, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE CARDINALS HISTORY IS. I DONT MIND PAYING $300 FOR A SEAT, PAYING YOUR WAGES. BUT MOST OF US WONT STAND YOUR MOUTH. MOVE ON AND GOOD LUCK. JOHNNY MO...IF MILWAKEE OR OTHER CENTRAL TEAM GETS HALLADAY..SO BE IT. JUST TOP IT SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY. LAST YEAR THEY GOT CC. WE DID NOTHING. DONT SELL OUT ALL THE PROSPECTS HOWEVER. IF WE LOSE PUJOLS, YOU WILL SEE BOOED. IM NOT YET ON YOUR BANDWAGON, BUT I CAN BE. PROVE ME WRONG FOR THE BENEFIT OF WINNING. YOU SHOULD ALSO REPRIMAND TLR. RULE ONE IN CARDINAL NATION..."DO NOT SH**TALK THE FANS.

"Lugo was DFA that means in a couple days he would have been free!"
Well, not exactly free. Any team picking him up would have to pay the league minimum.
Since Boston is picking up 100% of Lugo's remaining salary, and paying Duncan's salary besides, Lugo is actually playing for the Cards for better than free, but is he really worth it?
Posted by: A | July 23, 2009 at 09:22 AM
Defensively; an inanimate orange cone can stop just as many balls from getting past it as these two; offensively, neither could hit a beach ball with a canoe paddle so the main benefit I can see is:
The Red Sox may now have enough brut power hitters with stone hands on defense in AAA to start an arena football team instead.

im a huge cards fan and i like the trade lugo seems like he could hit alot more than duncan and hey ryan has been struggling and really hasnt before this year been used to starting so he might need a break now i really think we should go for holliday he struggled early but is settled in and is on fire like he was in colorado and he doesnt like being in oakland he wants to be in a baseball city that cares even if we give up wallace we would still have depth at third with derosa glaus and other minor leaugers and of course thursten and barden but they are doing horrible and trade ankiel for anything even a crappy prospect so we could use the prospect in a trade or something he gets put in the regulure lineup just for playing time and he just strikes out even before he was injured he wasnt doing good!!!!!!trade him and open up the 5 spot in the linup for derosa for about the lugo trade im excited because at least we have an upgrade in speed and hes good at getting base hits and if youve been a cardinals fan u would know how much duncan has struggled last year and this year he cant hit anything but a fastball just isnt a major leauger!and we need to get a guy like bedard or wasburn welemyer has been horrible i mean it would be nice to have halladay i mean that would be the best rotation if we could get washburn abd halladay
1.chris carpenter
2.roy halladay
3.adam wainwright
4.joel pinerio
5.jarred wasburn
god if those guys are pitching on their game best rotation i mean joel doesnt have the record but he has pitched so many quality starts and if hes pitching good complete game every time!

Yeah about the only way those trades happen are if you trade Pujols to Toronto... Then trade Rasmus and Wallace to Seattle... Not literally, but I mean, there is nothing in the Cardinals system that could get you ONE of those two starters. Your system is pretty much empty after Wallace and Rasmus. You have a couple decent prospect, but you already traded away Chris Perez, and the rest of the guys wouldn't be worth anything to Seattle. We already have too many outfield and fringy pitching prospects. Washburn would actually be 2nd in the rotation after Carpenter and before Halladay if you are going off current value. If for no other reason than to break up the two righties with a lefty, but Washburn is a down right stud, not a #5 as you put it. Homer or not, he's pitched into the 7th inning or later 11 of 19 starts this season. He's pitched 6+ innings 17 o 19 times. The other two times he went 5 and 5.1 IP. Yeah, he's a legitimate #2 pitcher right now. Oh and if you wonder what a rotation would look like equal to your "dream rotation" just see the pitching staff Seattle already runs out there every week. Felix 2.45 ERA, Wash 2.71 ERA, Bedard 2.70 ERA, Vargas 3.81 ERA, Rowland-Smith 3.50-ish ERA career as a starter.
Anyways, there's no way in HELL that the Cardinals acquire Holliday + a F.O.R. pitcher. Nor are they going to get TWO F.O.R. pitchers.

hugecardsfan...
Try writing actual sentences. Think of a complete thought and then put a period. Also, try spacing out what you type, so you never have more than three or four sentences together, unless they are all about the same EXACT thing.
It makes it easier to read when you punctuate better. You should really put a period every 6 words with how you write. I'm out of breath, just reading it. The whole thing is like a big run-on sentence.
Not saying it to be a dick, just trying to give you some advice if you want people to read what you have to say. If your spelling and grammar suck, they'll probably just skip what you write. Unless SuzysServant gets a man crush on you and then he won't ever leave you alone! He does more grab assing than a bi-curious cellmate serving a double life sentence.

Mark Twain once wrote that writing an exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke and it shows poor writing. I tend to smile when I think I'm funny or maybe have a chuckle, so I leave it to just one exclamation point if I'm feeling saucy! Two or more makes me feel like Rodney Dangerfield.

It is also easier to read when you don't write 5 paragraph essay's in a comment section.

As far I can see it the sox traded lugo because he wasn't going to play for them anymore. Green has been servicable at shortstop and Lowrie is returning from injury, so there is no reason to have three shortstops on the roster. All three of those guys can play multiple infield positions, so Lugo's versatility did not come into play. They DFA'd him earier in the week just because he was a waste of a roster spot. I am not saying that Duncan is gonna be an impact player because honestly i have no idea what he is capable of. i think it was a smart move on Theo's part to atleast get a player who maybe someday could be useful, for a shortstop that the sox had totally given up on.

Terrible Deal for the sox. At least with lugo you get a guy who can run the bases and play 2b, SS, 3b and center and they got him for free. The only player worse than chris duncan is his brother shelley, he blows.
