| Dodgers Unlikely To Acquire An Ace? »

A night without baseball just doesn't feel right...
- ESPN's Buster Olney wonders if the "legal wrangling" caused by the McCourts' divorce could affect the Dodgers attempt to land a No. 1 starter this offseason. Within the same piece, Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus notes that the prospects traded in deals for Casey Blake and George Sherrill have thinned out LA's system, meaning they might not have the ammo to pull off a major trade.
- Meanwhile, Phil Wood of MASNsports.com writes that a source told him they believe Joe Torre will manage the Dodgers for years to come. "When push comes to shove, he won't want to leave," said the source.
- Tyler Kepner of The NY Times mentions that Chien-Ming Wang isn't sure if the Yankees will tender him a contract this offseason. “Nothing’s sure,” Wang said. Wang has thrown just 137 IP over the last two seasons due to foot and shoulder injuries.
- Dave Cameron at FanGraphs looks at the David Wright-Jose Cruz Jr. non-trade, and says that the Blue Jays messed up by not making the deal, but not because Wright developed into an All-Star. He says J.P. Ricciardi did wrong by not getting any return for Cruz Jr. before he left as a free agent in the offseason.
Cameron is dead on. Even if Wright turned out to be a nobody it was still a stupid move. Clearing some salary and getting any return is always better than holding onto a player who isn't part of next years plans when the team clearly won't be competing. Especially when arbitration isn't going to be offered.
It's sad, but so many people still don't get this simple principle.

Yeah unfortuanetly the cubs have done some dumb moves.
Hendry's list
Ricky Nolasco, Sergio Mitre, Renyel Pinto for 1 year of Juan Pierre
Jose Mesa (#3 prospect best pitching prospect) for 1 horrible year of Kevin Gregg
Mark DeRosa for Jeff Stevens, Jon Gaub, and some other guy
Letting Kerry Wood go when he would of excepted a 1 year deal.
The whole outfield
Alfonso Soriano 8 year deal
Kosuke Fukudome 4 year deal
Milton Bradley 3 year deal
Signing Aaron Miles, Joey Gathright
Trading Garrett Olsen for Aaron Heilman instead of making a package for Jake Peavy
Good job Hendry on a awful 2009 off season hopefully 2010 will be better

"It's sad, but so many people still don't get this simple principle."
JP had just gotten the job, ripped apart the front office, lambasted the bare cupboard of a farm system to the media, and was going to give away Raul Mondesi for nothing. Now, you can blast him for not trying to rebuild that system, but Cruz Jr. was a fan favorite and it's quite possible at the trade deadline JP didn't want to move 2/3 of his starting OF and further piss off an already alienated fan base. David Wright was in his first full pro season, so for Jays fans, think of him as being where Kevin Ahrens was last year. It's not inconceivable that JP didn't see any utility in that sort of deal, and figured it would be better to hold on to Cruz and decide on arbitration later.
If, however, he knew he wasn't going to be offering Cruz Jr. arbitration at that time and he still turned down the deal, well that just makes no sense. Which is why I don't think it's the case, JP's moves didn't typically reek of a lack of logic. Cue up the posts ripping that last line, but if you're going to try, please come at me with something substantial that I won't be able to easily explain easily in context. Or maybe just realize that the fact Boston has already reached out to JP should tell you something.

That was Jose Ceda, bro. I'm sure you just had a brainfart, because Senor Smoke hasn't been in the league for a few years.

Thank you. Good post. It's hilarious how fast 'fans' are to jump on JP, but rarely have anything to back it up.

Lowe and Jordan Schaefer for Kemp and Pierre.
Yea? yea? Please?

Why would the Dodgers even consider that? They could've signed Lowe if they had wanted him. Kemp is worth twice what Lowe and Schaefer are worth...

"Trading Garrett Olsen for Aaron Heilman instead of making a package for Jake Peavy"
Yes, because Garrett Olsen would've enticed the Padres to trade Peavy. Is that even a serious statement?

"Yes, because Garrett Olsen would've enticed the Padres to trade Peavy. Is that even a serious statement?"
There was media speculation that the Cubs traded for Olson because the Pads wanted him. Again though... speculation.

92-93 - you could be right that JP was planning on offering arb at the time. Still, what changed between in the two months from the trade deadline to the end of the season? The guy actually improved from the trade deadline until the end of the year - posting a great Sept/Oct (OPS of 935). Was JP hoping that Cruz was going to play worse in order to get a better deal? I don't see it.
My post wasn't to pick on JP specifically. I totally agree that there was very little to indicate that Wright would turn out to the be the player he has become. My rant was targeted towards any club that has a situation that falls under these categories:
-- Player has value
-- Team will not offer arb
-- Team will not attempt to resign
-- Team is out of contention
When those facts present themselves you HAVE to make a trade. A bag of balls is better than nothing. At a minimum you will receive some form of a prospect and salary relief that can be used in the off-season.
I hear the whole "don't want to piss off the fan base" comment all of the time when people defend inaction. If you want your fans to be happy then put a winning club on the field. You can't do that if you consistently receive ZERO return for your tradeable assets.
Again - this isn't specific to JP. I think he royally screwed up in both the handling of Burnett last year and Halladay this year. However, he is far from the worst of the GM's. Plenty of these guys improperly evaluate their situation and in turn make bone-headed mistakes.

Actually, Jose Cruz Jr. had another year of service before he became a FA. All the more so why it's understandable JP wanted to get value back if he was going to move him. Why he later decided to non-tender him I don't know, but it's way too tough to analyze these things 7 years later.
You can't say he royally screwed up on either Burnett or Halladay without knowing potential packages he could have received, and there's very little reason to believe he could have gotten enough for either of them.
I hate coming across as a JP apologist all the time, cuz I really have no love for the guy, and I'm happy he is gone. It's just incredible how people can misrepresent fact because of the power of the national media.

Better people on this site that write the facts, and truly look at it in all perspectives.

Torre is fond of money.Very fond of the green and therefore will be going nowhere.Of course,if the Dodgers don't give him enough he can always trash his players and front office in a book with the help of Tom Verducci(hack "journalist" extrodinaire).

There is no reason the Yankees, of all teams, shouldn't tender Wang a contract. That would be an absurd move for any team, let alone the Yanks.
