Odds & Ends: Mariners, Orioles, Indians

If you're up reading, we're up writing!

  • MLB.com's Jim Street takes questions about the Mariners. Among other things, he believes the Mariners will find a veteran catcher to at least split time with prospect Adam Moore.
  • Street's Baltimore counterpart, MLB.com's Spencer Fordin, believes the Orioles will move Koji Uehara to short relief and look to acquire another veteran starter.
  • The Cleveland Plain-Dealer's Paul Hoynes has very positive things to say about Manny Acta, the new Indians' manager.
  • Manny Corpas looks strong in Instructional League play, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com, and Corpas will play winter ball as well. A Corpas revival gives the Rockies some alternatives if they don't want to face a big arbitration number from Huston Street, or pick up the $5.4MM option of Rafael Betancourt.

The Orioles should trade for Derek Lowe. It wont take much to get him. Or they could go for a real eastern look and trade for Kenshin Kawakami, but would require a bigger return. Would it benefit a team to have two japanese players instead of one?

Why would a rebuilding team trade for a $15 million/yr starter?

The Orioles do want a veteran starter, but not at that cost. If the Braves ate, say... half of his salary... I still probably wouldn't trade for him. Yeah, we might be contenders by 2012 (the last year of his deal), but wouldn't it make more sense to bide our time and, if necessary, acquire an expensive veteran starter when we are actually close to contending?

Honestly, I'm just a Braves fan who would like to pawn him off on some crappy team. By suggesting it on message boards I'm hoping to influence that somehow. He's a much better fit with the Mariners anyway.

The Braves would never eat half of his salary, but Lowe for $7.5 million a year would be seen as a bargain by any team...except the Marlins.

KK to the orioles would make some sense. He only makes 6 million per year and would be a good middle of the rotation starter on most teams.

It will take a miracle for the Braves to be able to pawn off Lowe on someone.

Lowe isn't as bad as he's made out to be...he was actually pretty good for three months this season. It's just that he was also pretty awful for three months. He's averaged over 200 innings per season for eight years, and that's worth a lot to a rebuilding ballclub, especially when it's a veteran guy with Lowe's renowned work ethic. The guy is a monster when it comes to preparation: running, working out, watching tape, throwing regimen. To a bunch of promising youngsters, it would be like having another pitching coach around, except this one takes the mound every fifth day.

That being said, nobody is going to take on his $15M salary. The Braves have a better shot at trading KK, but if I were the Braves I'd be pretty happy going into the season with "too many" arms for the rotation.

I live in Golden, CO and played softball with Manny Corpas a couple weeks ago. He's friends with one of our players that works for the Rockies and he subbed for us. They kicked him out after 2 innings because he's a pro. Nice guy though. We've had Luis Gonzalez, Jorge DeLarosa and other Rockies hang out in our dugout before too. Pretty cool.

Yeah, the Koji thing has been common knowledge for months. I think the O's see him as a 1-2 inning guy, innings 6-8, but can be flexed to long relief as needed.

I wish he had a more prominent role, since he's a cool dude and a solid pitcher, but game-wise, it makes sense to pen him.
