Padres Rumors: GM, Cameron, Correia

FRIDAY, 5:53pm: Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports writes that the Padres and Diamondbacks could work out a compensation package for Arizona VP of player personnel Jerry DiPoto.  San Diego CEO Jeff Moorad has what he characterized as a "gentleman's agreement" not to raid his former club for candidates, but Morosi says that the stipulation could be waived for the right price.  Moorad is said to have a "very high opinion" of DiPoto.

In addition to labeling Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer as a "strong candidate" (per industry sources), Morosi writes that some in the industry expect Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng to be considered.  Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine has drawn the interest of the Padres, but the team has yet to seek permission to interview him.

WEDNESDAY, 2:02pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock, via Twitter, says Forst has not been interviewed and the Gillick rumor below is untrue.  Furthermore, the A's emailed the AP to say the Padres have not asked permission to interview Forst.  SI's Jon Heyman's sources believe Hoyer is the favorite.

WEDNESDAY, 8:37am: Center says the Padres have two more GM interviews in addition to the three they've already conducted.  He says Hoyer, David Forst, and Pat Gillick "have surfaced in connection with the Padres vacancy."  Meanwhile, Newsday's Ken Davidoff says via Twitter that the Padres have not contacted the Yankees for permission to speak with Eppler.

TUESDAY: Let's discuss the latest buzz around the Padres.

  • MLB.com's Corey Brock says the team's baseball operations department will be run by manager Bud Black, executive VP Paul DePodesta and assistant GM Fred Uhlman Jr. until CEO Jeff Moorad finds Kevin Towers' replacement at GM.
  • Moorad has interviewed three candidates for GM, with more to come.  He hopes to make the hire within a few weeks.  Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer and Yankees director of pro scouting Billy Eppler have been rumored.
  • Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes about the Padres' offseason needs (they have roughly $10MM to spend).  Center says the team needs a right-handed hitting center fielder, and Mike Cameron's name surfaced.
  • Center suggests that to save money the Padres might have to shop Kevin Kouzmanoff, Heath Bell, or both.  He even wonders if they'd non-tender Kevin Correia and attempt to sign him more cheaply (presumably using his desire to play near home as leverage).
  • On his blog, DePodesta writes about the difficult realities of working within baseball.
  • Mike Axisa of River Ave. Blues suggests the Yankees should add Towers to their front office.

My guess s that Towers either goes to San Fran or Seattle as a special consultant.

I would love to see Cameron back in SD as long as it is only a 1 year deal, he would be a great veteran to have in the club house to help mentor all of the young players that will be on the team next year, but who knows what kind of approach the Padres are planning to take next season.

Milton Bradley rumors and now Mike Cameron? This is why they never develop and take strides forward, they are always living in the past. I respect KT for what he did but one of his major flaws was becoming attached to players and trying to bring them back, sign them after they passed their prime, etc. Let's hope that attitude left with him.

If the Padres are interested in adding an outfielder, then don't they pretty much have to move Kevin Kouzmanoff?

They already have Headley, Blanks, Venable and Gwynn in the outfield, and another outfielder shouldn't really be added to take time away from those first three guys.

If they're gonna add an outfielder, then logically wouldn't they deal Kouzmanoff and install Headley back at third?

Makes sense to me..

That has been the goal the last couple of seasons, but we might end up trading Headley if he is the only one to get us value in a trade.

Also, we'll probably need to get a CF since Venable is not ideal defensively there, although Gwynn would make a solid late inning replacement in center.

Mike Cameron would be great for us in my opinion. Maybe not as good as he was a few years ago, but still a reliable vet who can cover ground and hit for some power. Pads really need a veteran everyday player besides Eckstein (who shouldn't be starting next year in a best case scenario).

Neither Hoyer nor Eppler have been interviewed.

Neither team has been asked for permission to interview them.

Why are they considered as possibilities at this point?

My guess is that Towers goes to the Cubs, Rangers or Giants as GM. Maybe not this season, but certainly by next.

KT has said several times in radio interviews he has done since being let go that he very much wants to stay on the west coast, but if a GM job like the Cubs becomes available he may change his mind.

Yeah, the chance to be the GM that brings a World Series to the Cubs would seem to be awfully appealing, at least to me. He'd be freaking adored here.

Not to mention that he would have a pretty nice payroll to play around with.

The idea of Hendry leaving excites me.

don't know why Forst would take the Padres job. he's basically the A's GM already.

"don't know why Forst would take the Padres job. he's basically the A's GM already."

how so?

From posts by writers like Jon Heyman and Keith Law on Twitter and other articles it looks like the Padres have not interviewed Forst, Hoyer, Eppler, Gillick or Ng. I wonder who they HAVE interviewed?

I could really see either Kouz or Headley, (more likely Kouz) moved to the A's (or another small market team in need of a cheap club controlled 3B).

Kouz has always been a stopgap for Headley. Padres have just been so poor offensively that they needed Kouz and Headley's bats in and had to put him in the OF.

And how the hell is Forst the pseudo A's GM? Beane runs that show.

Regarding the Cubs, if the Alderson rumour are true, I would be willing to bet that is one experience Towers would not do again.

Cameron to me, would be a step backwards. Keep the youth movement going and try to field a reason for Adrian to resign in the next two seasons.

How's Headley's D at third?

Hoyer and Boston Ben Cherington have been interviewed by San Diego.

DTogo,

Do you have a link for that? I can't find a single article that says Hoyer or Cherington ahve definitely been interviewed or even one that says the Red Sox have been asked for permission to interview either of them.

I have read articles that said the Red Sox were not going to allow any personnel to be interviewed until after the playoffs are over, but that was in reference to Harrell. I would assume it applies to Hoyer and Cherington.

Moorad also has said since the day he cut KT loose that he was going to interview two more candidates and he repeated it yesterday so I would assume that unless he is lying, which is certainly a possibility, then he has not interviewed anyone else since he fired Towers.

I would be interested in seeing where you read otherwise.

"I have read articles that said the Red Sox were not going to allow any personnel to be interviewed until after the playoffs are over, but that was in reference to Harrell. I would assume it applies to Hoyer and Cherington."

That was pertaining to Farrell, the active Sox pitching coach. I cannot see Epstein not wanting another of his young assistants not getting a GM job and "thought" saw on Globe, or Herald that they had been asked for permission, but that is just way too much trouble, going line by line through a dozen BB related articles per day for a couple sentences regarding the open job, which Shaugnsey and Cafredo throw into stories like that in particular.

Hoyer would be missed if he left, he is important as far as the Sox go with the rule 4 draft and works behind the scenes on trades, he was one of the guys that made the deal for Beckett and Lowell while Epstein was gone for that month in 2006 also.

If SD (or some fans) think they are better off with rehash GM's circulating about.. Go for it, I, at least am tired of the younger assistants getting peeled away by other teams when they have nobody in house.
