Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has the latest on the Cardinals...
- Goold feels that the Cardinals "will keep tabs on the Jason Bay sweepstakes even while focusing on Matt Holliday." Like most Scott Boras clients, Holliday figures to reach the open market. The Cards have yet to make a formal extension offer; Holliday was one of 79 free agents to file yesterday. In another article, Goold had a nice look at eight potential Holliday suitors.
- Goold says Mark DeRosa "expressed a wish to test the open market," and the Cardinals beat writer expects the Cubs to make an offer. I'm not sure - the Cubs are limited on funds, seemingly happy with Jeff Baker at second base, and probably seeking a left-handed bat to replace Milton Bradley.
- Though the Cardinals have maintained dialogue with John Smoltz, the veteran pitcher expects to sign later in the offseason.
I know many fans want him back. I hope the Cubs do not make DeRosa an offer. For as much as his departure was a mistake last year, bringing him back would be a mistake this year. He is a great clubhouse guy on the downside of his career, who will be too expensive.

I agree.
DeRosa was great in his time here, and the Cubs could use an upgrade from Baker, but there's no need to spend major money on a marginal upgrade.
I would like to see the Cubs look at Coco Crisp. He's a switch-hitter, and the outfield defense would be greatly improved with him in center and Fukudome in right.

I think it would be terrible if Holliday didn't resign with the Cards, ESPECIALLY if he signs with the Yanks.

^Reason being that he would take more money over somewhere he would rather play.

I would love to have Holliday in left field for the Cardinals and protecting Albert, but I don't see how the Cardinals can go any higher than $100-$110 million over six years and still expect to pay Albert.

Coco Crisp? Really? Doesn't matter if he's a switch hitter if he sucks. Aaron Miles is a switch hitter for christ's sake.

If DeRosa were willing to come back to Chicago for $3-4 million a year in a backup roll (LF-RF-2b-3b-1b) then I could see the Cubs bringing him back. Otherwise it wouldn't make much sense. He's declining and not an obvious upgrade anywhere. He may be better than Baker but not enough so to warrant a large contract.

Yeah, Holliday fits into their lineup excellently, but I'm not sure that they can keep Pujols, Carpenter and Wainwright around if Holliday is making $18-20M per season.
I still like the Beltre fit, although David Freese certainly deserves a shot at an everyday job somewhere.

Crisp is 100 times the player that Miles is.
Crisp has decent on-base skills and flashed a huge walk rate in limited action in KC, he's got some gap power, he's a plus defender in center, and he's a good baserunner.
Miles doesn't get on base, has zero power, doesn't steal bases and is below-average at every defensive position he plays.
Crisp would greatly improve their defense while giving them a solid switch-hitter with a little offensive upside.
He's not perfect, but I'd rather have the great defense from Crisp/Fukudome than poor defense and a little more pop from a Fukudome/Fox combo.

I think the Phillies will go after Derosa, given that they nearly got him in that three way trade last year and they need a super utility player/third baseman

Honestly, I doubt that they will, especially if the price is going to be high, which I think it will. He's aging, and is going to need wrist surgery, which could easily limit his power majorly. I'd say stay away, and go after Beltre instead.

God I hope I don't have to see Bay in a cardinal uniform.

I think holliday is leaving St. Louis for as much money as possible. We all know that comes when you start a bidding war with the sox and yankees, with the yankees ultimately winning. The yankees have Matsui, damon and nady coming off the books this year and will throw 20+ at holliday without even blinking.

DEROSA TO DODGERS!
Make it happen.

you guys keep saying holliday will only do to yanks cause of money, have you not reliazed he has stated he has always wanted to play in new york and grew up rooting for both teams? i would rather see the yanks keep damon and godzilla

Cubs don't need to bring Derosa back. With the emergence of Starlin Castro the Cubs will bring him up eventually to play SS and move Theriot to 2nd.
Posted by: legendarycyrus | November 06, 2009 at 06:27 PM
your right lengendarycyrus, but Castro is still at the very least a year away. He might be in the minors 2 or maybe 3 more years, a 2-3 year deal to DeRosa is perfect.

I agree that DeRo was a great player and trading was a mistake, bring him back at 5-7 mill would also be a mistake. Save the money for Figgins, Roberts or even Tejada and move Teriot to 2B. Two primary spots: CF and leadoff. Figgins handles 2B&leadoff & Roberts the same. With the money restrictions, probably neither.Bradley for Roland Giants pay 5-8 mill for contract exchange, use the $ for figgins. CF fixed, 2B & leadoff fixed.

I would like to know why there is so much opposition
to the hiring of McGuire. He said he was using Andro during his career. At that time it was not illegal. Admission of others use has not seems to hurt other athletes. I am asking this just for information. It was a sad time for baseball, and I think they are trying to make up for it now, but those early years will always haunt the sport.
