« Marlins Rumors: Lindstrom, Cantu, Uggla | Main | Rockies Rumors: Hawpe, Atkins, Barmes, Street »
WEDNESDAY, 12:06pm: The Mariners' initial offer to Branyan included a second-year option, the first baseman told Larry Stone of the Seattle Times. Branyan remains optimistic about re-signing, but he wants two guaranteed years for the first time in his career.
TUESDAY, 4:53pm: MLB.com's Jim Street reports that Branyan rejected the team's offer. He'd rather test the free agent market than settle for something less than a two-year deal. Branyan, who hit 31 homers this year, says he would like to return to Seattle. He wants to sign a multi-year deal, however.
Street says Wilson appears to have rejected the Mariners' offer, too.
12:23pm: The Seattle Mariners have extended contract offers to Russell Branyan and Jack Wilson, according to Larry LaRue of the News Tribune.
LaRue does not have specific details on dollar amounts, but adds that the proposal to Wilson is a multi-year deal.
LaRue writes that the team has also engaged in talks with Ken Griffey Jr. though it's still up in the air whether Junior will want to play again in 2010. LaRue doesn't rule out the possibility that the Mariners could retain both Griffey and Mike Sweeney.

Please no Sweeney or JR. Please both retire. They are not going to be better next year! Carp will do better then Griffey!

If Zduriencik gets his way, they'll try to sign the best defensive DH available.
;)

Oh god no. Both?!?!?! We should looking at neither. No offense Griff...I love ya, but I want to win too.

There's no way they retain Sweeney AND Jr.
Probably keeping Sweeney warm in case Jr. hangs it up, or perhaps so that when he retires he'll consider the Ms for a coaching role.

I don't blame Branyan. 30 HR's should get you a decent 2 year gig. Plenty of teams looking for that kind of power.

The Red Sox could use Jack Wilson.

Um, besides the fact that his back is in pretty bad shape..???
I know people love home runs but his back is pretty bad to overlook *just* because he hit 30 home runs.
I'll like to know the amount of money Seattle offered before calling him crazy. It might have been a low base with incentives and he wants guaranteed money.

sorry...thought I was keeping it in line...

I say let them both go. Branyan's not that hot...this is the first time he's had a fulltime gig in his career and look where it landed him (as in, the DL). There's no guarantee on which branyan shows up next year too. As for Wilson, demand for a defensive SS who can't hit isn't greater anywhere else than seattle. If he thinks he's gonna get more than 4 or 4.5 per for more than 2 years, he's just crazy. Jack Z, don't give in! Obviously I haven't seen terms of the offers, but unless we were lowballin' them pretty good, I say let 'em walk. We can find options.

"As for Wilson, demand for a defensive SS who can't hit isn't greater anywhere else than seattle. If he thinks he's gonna get more than 4 or 4.5 per for more than 2 years, he's just crazy."
Here's a few data points for that type of player, from Cot's (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2004/06/free-agent-position-players.html):
John McDonald inf 2 years/$3.8M (2008-09)
Adam Everett ss 1 year/$1M (2009) 1 year/$2.8M (2008)

If Wilson thinks he will get better than 2/8 on the market then he is crazy. Branyan deserves a little more respect. That 2/8 should be fair compensation.

Don't get me wrong...Wilson is worth more (and a lot more) than a John McDonald or an Adam Everett on defensive numbers alone. I figured the M's would be offering him about 2 years and $8M. Hopefully these are both just formalities for a much more realistic set of circumstances.

I don't know much about the M's, but I know Ken Griffey Jr. won't settle for a low base salary contract. Like a few posts above me said, they should keep Sweeney warm in case Griffey hangsit up, I would like to rephrase that. When he gets injured.

Hangs it, sorry.

Jack Wilson seems like a good option to fill the whole with excellent defense until Truinfel is called up, 2 years seems alright for me.
Not alot of options at SS out there that are better.

I believe the Pirates offered Wilson around 2 years / 8 million to stay with the team and was laughed at by Wilson and went to the media through his agent to cry he was lowballed. Have fun dealing with him.

If Branyan leaves the Mariners, Lyle Overbay could be a good fit via trade. He's a solid first basemen from the Seattle area.

I think Branyan on a 2 year deal is a good move. Last year, Branyan was one of the best turnaround stories of the year! Power stroke was back and he was a tough out everytime he stepped to the plate. I think the M's really need to concentrate on how they will replace Adrian Beltre, Jarrod Washburn and most likely Erik Bedard. Please Mariners KEEP KEEP KEEP Felix Hernandez, you build around players of this talent level.

"I think Branyan on a 2 year deal is a good move"
-Because he has a history of consistantly producing back to back seasons?
Cant see what team would give him 2 years- maybe the Giants

Remember Branyan hit those 30 HRs in only 5 months. That being said, the team should have some kind of insurance plan in case his back falters. 1 year and an option seems pretty reasonable as long as the money was right.
What is the right amount for Branyan?
I say 1 year $6 million, with a second year option for $8.
