« Curtis Granderson Rumors: Friday | Main | Wilson & Zduriencik On New Deal »

Mariners Sign Jack Wilson

4:04pm: Kovacevic confirmed it, the deal is worth $10MM.

3:58pm: Kovacevic says the deal is believed to be worth a total of $10MM.

3:33pm: The Mariners signed shortstop Jack Wilson to a two-year deal, according to a team press release.  Terms were not disclosed, but the sides were said by Dejan Kovacevic to be discussing a deal worth more than $8MM.  Wilson's new deal overwrites an $8.4MM club option for 2010.

Wilson, 32 in December, is renowned for his defensive ability.  In Wilson and Franklin Gutierrez, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has acquired two of the game's best defenders at their respective positions in his year with the club.  The Mariners' left-side infield could be a wall if Zduriencik re-signs Adrian Beltre or inks Joe Crede.

Is it possible to make the playoffs with Jack Wilson as your starting SS?

I think "no", but I guess we will find out.

I don't think so.

M's + Playoffs= Highly Doubtful, although I wouldn't mind seeing them make the playoffs

The Tigers made it to their one game playoff with Adam Everett, anything's possible.

if you can win 85 games after playing Yuniesky Betancourt and Josh Wilson for the better part of the season, I'd have to think just about anything is possible.

"Is it possible to make the playoffs with Jack Wilson as your starting SS?"

Why not? The Red Sox made the playoffs with Nick Green and Alex Gonzalez. The Cards made it with Brendan Ryan, the Twins made it with Orlando Cabrera. I'd say Wilson, with his defense, is superior to all these guys. Good move, I prefer Wilson to any FA SS, with the possible exception of Scutaro.

Jack Wilson alone has nothing to do with our chances at the postseason. If anything, his defense increases our chances at making it. This is a solid signing though. Good value, great glove. Especially with no big upside shortstops available and with Hardy already traded.

Dodgers should of went after him to play 2nd base

Wilson is the first elite defensive SS to play for the Mariners since Omar Vizquel was traded before the 1994 season.

No 3400, they really shouldn't have.

If Beltre resigns Mariners have the best defense in Baseball. Even without Beltre, With Gutierrez, IChiro and Wilson the defense is ridiculous.

If lopez is staying in Seattle, he obbviously is no Chase Utley at 2B, but for 5M- I love this deal.
Free Agent Pitchers will love it too. If Rich Harden or John Lackey are signed as the number 2 starter, then yes, Ms can make the playoffs with Jack Wilson at SS.

ur right dave, brandon phillips in dodger blue for 2010!!!!

I like the move. And I want them to keep coming. How about this 3 team trade

Brewers get
Morrow
Lopez
Bannister

Mariners get
Weeks
Gordon

Royals get
Gamel
Aumont
Plus 2 other prospects

Then trade for ryan doumit for luke french, mark lowe and a prospect

Then the ms sign lackey and harden to deals, and resign branyan and king felix.

Lineup
C moore/ doumit
1b branyan
2b weeks
Ss wilson
3b gordon
Lf saunders
Cf guti
Rf icihiro
Dh doumit/ griffey/ carp

Rotation
Felix
Lackey
Harden
Rowland smith
Snell

Bullpen
Rel jakubakus
Hill
White
Jimenez
Fields
Clo aardsma

dude, if you think the M's have best defense ur ridiculously confused. Not saying Orioles have best, but they have to have one of the better ones! Adam Jones is a gold glover, Markakis should have been a gold glover. Roberts is an amazing fielder. and Andino is showing a lot of potential.

I'd love to say yes this will help the M's make the 2010 playoffs, but realistically, no. This is an 80-90 win team with potential. I'm more worried about the offense than the defense right now. It doesn't matter how few runs you give up if you can't score runs. Look at the Royals when Greinke pitched, how many 1-run losses did the guy have?

It's nice to have a great defense, and I believe strongly in defense and pitching being the root of great teams. But, realistically, it looks more like 2011 will be the M's coming out party. They are building smartly and making the right moves. Now we just need some more production from the offense.

I'm not sure on what route to go for that though. I don't believe Jason Bay or Matt Holliday is the proper course, but we shall see. I love the offseason, so much optimism and chance.

Adam Jones is a gold glover. He played in 128 games I believe, Guti should have been a gold glover. Jones is a great centerfielder don't get me wrong. But the way the writers voted on that was ridiculous. Guti is far better than Jones, defensively that is.

hahaha doumit
thats hilarious
keep dreamin kid

I don't think this is a deal breaker, nor do I think it hurts our chances anymore at contending in 2010. The M's stayed in the race all season long with what some would consider a trainwreck of a roster. We have no where to go but up from this point. Especially with all the room we have on our roster and the money we have to unload.

Remember when shortstops used to be a position where it was all about defense?

I think you and whoever votes for the gold gloves are the confused ones.

Have you ever seen Franklin Gutierrez play? There is really not point in putting any other man in the OF because he covers that much ground.

As a Yankee fan, I've watched a lot more of Jones than Gutierrez. I was more impressed by the smaller sample from Gutierrez than Jones. Plus, UZR/150 has Gutierrez ahead of Jones -- by a lot.

The Mariners DO have the best defense in baseball. The O's aren't even close.

Just wait til' Ackley comes on up :)

THANK YOU STRIKETHREE, you are right! Now Im not saying the Mariners have the best defense but I am saying its better than the Orioles. Cody you need to realize that just cuz your favorite team is the orioles doesnt automatically make it the best team in any aspect. One big reason would be well, they are the orioles hahaha. That'd be like me claiming the M's have the best offense which is a joke and a horrible one at that. No more of your ridiculous, uneducated opinions. Oh and Delonge, shhhhh. Please. Not gonna happen. Everyone knows it wouldnt.

Ichiroll

Did Ackley get his are fixed? Where would he play?

Oops, I ment arm

good sign
good quality shortstop

The Seattle Mariners were the runaway leaders in the UZR defensive rankings:

http://www.fangraphs.com/teams.aspx?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&type=0&season=2009&month=0

... and had the most leaders in the Fielding Bible's rankings:

http://www.billjamesonline.net/fieldingbible/complete-votetally.asp

dude, yea, I saw Guti play, I saw him play a lot, but also, have you seen Adam Jones played? every other night he robbed one from over the fence. I know he didnt play a full season, but he is a 23 year old phenom, and he deserved it. Even missing all those games, on Baseball tonight web gem's points he was still near the top. He is a stud. Guti is good, but I wouldnt say he deserved it more.

Seattle has 3-4 decent OF prospects Suanders, Ackley, Halman and I think Martinez is there to. The problem will be who turns out to be the better fit for Safeco and devs well enough to play in MLB. Scary though looking at how little SP there is and how many position players will be ready in 1-3 years.

"he robbed one from over the fence"

So you are basing your opinion on a sample size of one play? Great analysis.

and I aint just saying it cuz I am an O's fan, its because everyone doesnt give a crap about the O's. No1 pays attention to them. and thats fine, but just cuz you dont watch them or pay attention to them, doesnt mean they dont deserve anything. Go look on youtube and if you find a video of him of last season. I bet you will see a lot of him robbing HR's.

Anyone know which field is harder to play in? Baltimore or Seattle. Cus if Seattle is harder to play the outfield in Seattle, Death To Flying Things really got robbed.

Cody people should be paying attention to the O's I agree, Ive been watching them for a long time. They have a great young team that could contend with TB in a season or two cus Boston and NYY are just about to go thru a cycle again just based on how they are being handled. But to say Jones is better then Guitz defensively is a little silly just because he won a popularity contest.

see, and he didnt just rob "one" like I said, just cuz you dont pay attention to the O's doesnt mean they dont do anything. Yea, you saw one of his plays robbing one, but I watched like half of there games last season. Trust me, there was plenty more than "one" HR robbed by him.

Lol pun intended tinynick?

Robbing home runs is only one aspect of playing outfield. I've seen Raul Ibanez rob a home run ball and he was one of the worst leftfielders in baseball last year. Its everything, if robbing home runs is the main criteria for being a gold glove OFer than I'm sure that the players who won would have been different.

dude, idk if he is better than him, but dont sit here and say that he didnt deserve that Gold Glove. ok, Gutiz could have got it too. I understnad that, but ppl sound like he did nothing to deserve it which isnt true.

He played well. Was he more deserving than Guti... definitely not. And Hunter winning it too is a whole other ball game.

Here are the 2009 UZR defensive rankings for centerfielders:

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=cf&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&season=2009&month=0

Franklin Gutierrez was the near-unanimous pick as the top defensive centerfield in the vote of the Fielding Bible's 10 panelists:

http://www.billjamesonline.net/fieldingbible/complete-votetally.asp

Adam Jones finished 22nd among centerfielders in the voting.

dude, he didnt just rob homeruns, he threw bunches of guys out at the plate. he dived for balls and caught them. Not saying it was just robbing HR's.

That should read "top defensive centerfieldER."

Well, considering that gold gloves go to the top 3 outfielders in the league, and Jones was not one of the top 3 defensive outfielders in the League, I'd say he doesn't deserve it.

That being said, Adam Jones is a fine player. I'd love to have him in Seattle's left field, although if he was, Bill Bavasi might still be here.

dude, say what you want. it was definetly not a popularity contest. Cuz the Orioles dont get any love, on Baseball tonight unless they are playing the Yanks or something there highlights are like 2 seconds long. and they dont just talk about the Orioles for 10 minutes like they do other teams. trust me, it was not a poularity contest.

Up With Twinkies: His arm is all better now. He's playing CF as we speak in the AFL.

Look bro.. Your Orioles need some love I understand that. And just because they aren't getting any airtime because the Yankees suck the air outta any room doesn't mean Jones was more deserving. I agree, Jones is a good player and will be a superstar someday. But, all bias aside, he didn't deserve it. Would I love to have him still in the OF, absolutely. Especially next to Guti and Ichiro!, anything hit in the air would be caught. But, every stat in the book says Guti is on a different planet compared to Jones. And people with much much much more baseball knowledge than both you and I agree. Other than the voters because they obviously don't use all these wonderful tools to measure abilities.

I don't think Matt Kemp deserved a Gold Glove, and I'm a Dodgers fan. Mike Cameron was far better, and although Kemp was above average, he won based upon not just his defense, but on his year at the plate and status as a rising star.

Jones certainly didn't deserve to win over Gutierrez, and you can easily make a case for B.J. Upton and other over Jones as well.

I'm glad he saved a few home runs, but I saw Manny grab a couple that were headed over the wall as well. Quite a bit more to winning a GG than making SportCenter a few times.

Cody, you're a goddamn moron. Plain and simple.

Where is the Mariners beat writer? Shouldn't he be reporting this instead of the Pirates beat writer? Oh, that's right, Dejan has this tremendous man crush on Jack and the rest of the former Pirates! That team was such a juggernaut and Dejan misses covering such a powerhouse.

Look Cody, apparently you can't click on the repeated links that have proven your defensive analysis is flawed.

So let me spoon feed you some numbers:

MLB OF UZR LEADERS:
1) Franklin Gutierrez 29.1
2) Nyjer Morgan 27.8
3) Ryan Sweeney 24.0
4) Carl Crawford 17.6
5) Randy Winn 16.5
6) David DeJesus 15.1

2009 Gold Glove Winners
11) Ichiro Suzuki 10.5
14) Michael Bourn 8.6
21) Matt Kemp 2.6
31) Torri Hunter -1.1
37) Shane Victorino -4.1
38) Adam Jones -4.7

According to UZR, Franklin Gutierrez was the best defensive outfielder in baseball. Period.

And since you appear to be a casual fan like the baseball writers who vote for the gold glove award, UZR is the most trusted defensive statistic in baseball.

According to UZR, (real, quantifiable data - unlike the handful of diving plays and home runs Adam Jones has robbed) Ichiro is the most deserving gold glove winner by saving his team 10.5 runs.

And yours truly, Adam Jones is the least deserving of all gold glove winners by COSTING his team 4.7 runs. Also, I hope you were joking when you cited web gem points to justify Adam Jones winning the gold glove.

Here is the link if you don't trust me: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=of&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&season=2009&month=0

Decent sign for the M's, but I'm glad the dodger's didnt even get a chance to sign him.

So UZR means runs saved by a player or costed by a player, right? What does UZR/150 mean? does being in a bigger ballpark like the Rockies affect UZR in a negetive way like ERA, because I knowticed their outfielders had pretty bad UZR's. Sorry about all the questions, I've never even heard of UZR though...

The Mariners should trade for Derek Lowe. A contact/sinkerballer like Lowe would put up amazing numbers with Seattle's defense behind him. Plus, they have a lot of bad contracts coming off the books and could afford and greatly benefit bringing in a veteran of Lowe's caliber.

Glad that I exitted this series of comments.

It got really outlandish. Jones/ Markakis better than Ichiro/ Gutierrez?

Smart guy. Funny how the argument is: People are hating on Jones because they don't see him play all the time....yet this guy's clearly a)never seen Guitierrez play, b) is basing his opinion towards Jones solely on seeing him every night, thus catching every great play Jones made.

Check the highlights, Guitieriez was by far the best CF in baseball. Hunter shouldn't have even been in the conversation.

(Sodomojo, I think that Managers and Coaches vote on Gold Gloves, I actually think that writers would have voted Guti in a landslide, despite their lack of sophistication.)

Gutz is better with the leather than Jones for sure.....but Jones deserved a GG too, much more than Hunter who only played 2/3 of a season!

good sign. not great but good
