Some links to start off your weekend...
- Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe says the Red Sox are just doing their due diligence by touching base with John Lackey's agent, reminding us that they also spoke to CC Sabathia's and A.J. Burnett's representatives last offseason.
- WEEI.com's Alex Speier breaks down Joe Urbon's pitch for his client, free agent outfielder Jason Bay.
- Hideki Matsui acknowledged that he'd be disappointed if he didn't return to the Yankees, according to Anthony McCarron of The NY Daily News. Godzilla says that his agent Arn Tellem is taking care of the situation, but he doesn't think the two sides have had any discussions yet.
- ESPN's Rob Neyer says that Jack Wilson's defense is definitely worth the $10MM the Mariners gave him yesterday.
- Steve Slowinski at DRays Bay goes back and evaluates the deal that brought Mitch Talbot and Ben Zobrist to Tampa in exchange for Aubrey Huff.
- Edgardo Alfonzo still thinks he could be valuable utility player and has two or three years of baseball left, according to The NY Post's Kevin Kernan. The 36-year-old hasn't played in the big leagues since 2006.
I agree that the Red Sox will probably not be big players for Lackey. His numbers in Fenway aren't too pretty and Theo Epstein usually doesn't give big longterm contracts to pitchers in their 30's. I expect them to go after Chapman moreso, a young pitcher who could eventually turn into a dominant starter. I agree with a lot of you that there is a lot of risk involved in signing Chapman but they have a lot of trust in John Farrell and I think he could help Chapman develop his secondary pitches. Also that Jack Wilson contract was a very good signing for the Mariners. They get to keep one of the best defensive shortstops in the game around for only 5 million dollars a year. That is a very team friendly contract.

from what i've hear about chapman he doesn't seem worth the price he's asking for. I've heard he throws hard, but has no control of his pitches.

I don't think his price tag will go up as high as some are projecting but I get your point. As I said earlier he is a big risk but how often is a 21 year old lefty going to be on the free agent market who has the ability to hit 100 mph? I agree that he will need to develop more which is why I talked about the trust the Red Sox have with John Farrell. Overall, with the Red Sox payroll this is a risk they can afford to take. They don't have to worry about it as much as a team with a lower payroll does, I am not saying this is right but its simply the way it is. It just seems like the type of project Theo Epstein would love to get involved in.

that's true but i think teams are going to drive the prices up. For instance, if the red sox go after him, the yankees will, and probably 2 -3 more teams.

honestly i really want the yankees to pursue chapman; a lefty throwing 100 mph! enough said. control can be learned; raw talent cannot. Also a lefty to go back to back with Pettite in a 3 game series sounds nice. I just cant see the Yankees seriously pursing him because of the hard lesson they learned with kei igawa. 40+million wasted. Was projected to be a solid 3 starter in mlb. i cant see the yanks taking another big risk in an unpolished prospect

Yanks have to bring back Matsui. There is nobody available on the FA market who can replace his production and is as polished of a hitter that can be had on a one year deal.
The Yanks don't want to sign Bay or Holliday because they don't want to block Ajax or Montero for the future. But they still need to plug the gap until they are ready. Matsui needs to come back or the Yanks lineup will seriously suffer.

I see the Boston going after Harden he has a lot of promise and if they get him on the shoulder regiment that Dice-K was on he can become a strong No.3 guy and next year get one of Lee or Halladay and you have possibly the strongest pitching staffs in the league

Man I'm with you on that... but I don't know if Matsui will want only a 1-year deal. There lies the problem. More than likely... another team (most likely in the American league) will give him 2 or 3 years, and I don't see the Yankees going to those kind of heights for a DH only, with people like Posada that are going to be vying for time at DH in the coming couple years.

I doubt that package is strong enough for the Pads but something similar to that package COULD be enough to land Halladay.
