Quick Hits: Mets, Rockies, La Russa, Vizquel

Links for Sunday..

  • Mets lefties Pat Misch and Mike O'Connor declared minor league free agency, writes Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. O'Connor posted an ugly 5.22 ERA but strong 9.8 K/9 in 60 1/3 innings at Triple-A, while Misch posted a 4.00 ERA, 6.0 K/9, and 2.6 BB/9 in 141 2/3 innings.
  • The Rockies will look to bolster their rotation this winter, writes Jim Armstrong of The Denver Post.  General Manager Dan O'Dowd says that he'll especially be looking for an innings eater.
  • Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated (via Twitter) believes that Tony La Russa can have the White Sox job if he really wants it, though that is a big if.  Heyman also tweets that he doesn't see Francona coming to the South Side of Chicago.
  • Shortstop Omar Vizquel talked with Edgar Leal Suarez of La Verdad (Spanish link, translation provided by Nick Collias) about the 2011 campaign and his future plans.  The veteran reiterated that he hopes to continue playing next season and will evaluate his opportunities after the World Series.
  • David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter) expects the Braves to go target shortstops, corner outfielders, and utility infielders this winter.
  • Yankees left-hander C.C. Sabathia is expected to opt-out of his contract but earlier today he confessed that New York is the best place to play baseball, tweets David Waldstein of the New York Times.

  1. Would trade Lowe for Street!

    • Guest 4 years ago

i actually thought about that. wouldn’t be a straight up swap, but the rockies are trying to get rid street’s contract. its pretty unlikely, but if other pieces were involved, it could conceivably happen.

  2. NYBravosFan10 4 years ago

If we can somehow manage to drop some of Lowe’s contract along with McLouth’s and KK’s contracts gone then we can afford Jose Reyes

    • AtlantaBraves2210 4 years ago

Braves DO NOT need or want Jose Reyes. Im tired of seeing people post that. You are gonna give 5-6 years on an injury prone speed guy who will slow down soon? He is also a “Me First” guy, the Braves gave away an amazing talent in Yunel Escobar because he was a me first guy. Not how they operate. That money can be spent somewhere else.

      • Lunchbox45 4 years ago

okay boss, settle down.. its the guys flipping opinion, who are you to say the Braves DO NOT need or want Jose Reyes, you don’t know squat

        • Vmmercan 4 years ago

Funny how you reacted with just as much offense taken…

        • AtlantaBraves2210 4 years ago

How was it you said it? oh yes… okay boss settle down….its just my flipping opinion

        • Beauford 4 years ago

He can say the Braves don’t need or want Reyes because it’s his opinion just like the opinion from the guys who say the Braves could use Reyes. If the reason for the opinion bothers you, then attack the reason.

But you can’t defend one party by implying it’s their right to have an opinion then trash an opposing point of view because it’s just an opinion.

They’re both opinions…that’s what this forum is about …opinions. It’s how you back them up that counts.

          • Lunchbox45 4 years ago

I attacked his tone and demeanor not his right to share his opinion.

          • Beauford 4 years ago

“okay boss, settle down.. its the guys flipping opinion, who are you to say the Braves DO NOT need or want Jose Reyes, you don’t know squat”

And your statement doesn’t wreak from a condescending tone with an arrogant demeanor ?

          • Rabbitov 4 years ago

Its okay for Lunchbox to be arrogant when he is right.

          • Lunchbox45 4 years ago

maybe you shouldn’t use words you don’t quite understand.

      • Joveoak 4 years ago

Braves have a good shortstop in Gonzales and a good lead-off hitter in Bourn.  The Braves DO NOT need Reyes.  Btw, I don’t root for the Braves.

      • NYBravosFan10 4 years ago

and I’m tired of people constantly saying that their favorite doesn’t want  a certain player. What team doesn’t want Albert Pujols? or Carlos GOnzalez? or Justin Verlander? Is it worth it for a team like the Braves who have a bright future in the position to spend an unreal amount of money on Albert Pujols? No, of course it’s not. But it’s not like they don’t want them, they just don’t see a need.

    • BaseballLogic_Braves 4 years ago

      Well, McClouth isn’t a braves anymore anyway…

    • BaseballLogic_Braves 4 years ago

      And neither is KK. :3

  3. Smrtbusnisman04 4 years ago

Great! Maybe the Pirates can attempt a Ronny Cedeno for Mike Minor/Julio Teheran swap.

    • BaseballLogic_Braves 4 years ago

We don’t want another Alex Gonzalez at the plate. Especially one with less power.

  4. To anyone talking about Reyes to the Braves, whether you want it or not it’s not happening.  Our ownership’s idea of big spending is the Lowe/Uggla contract type of around 15mil for 4yrs.  After the Lowe debacle they’ll probably throw 10mil for 2yrs at Reyes and then wonder why he won’t sign.

  5. roberty 4 years ago

I’ve always wanted Omar Vizquel as the Braves utility infielder!

    • jwsox 4 years ago

coming from a sox fan..you can have him…there is little to nothing left in his tank..he may have passion but his playing days are very very close to being over. He wil get a job based on reputation not skill.

  6. Hermie13 4 years ago

Omar Vizquel back in Cleveland makes sense too.  Tribe has Donald as a utility infielder, but could use him as trade bait for a starting OF/1B (some bat) along with some prospects.

Omar would give them a vet presence and think he’d work very well with Asdrubal at SS who really needs work (makes some amazing plays but overall very below average).

Bringing Thome back this year was nice, but with Hafner around another year cant’ have two guys as DH onlys for a whole year.

Tribe also tried to get Omar before he went to the White Sox and he turned down the money for a shot at the playoffs…well, Cleveland could contend next year.

  7. the majors has a surprising lack of quality shortstops or even decent ones. the best fit for the braves would be jj hardy, but i doubt they could pry him away from the orioles.  reyes and rollins are viable options, but theyll probably be too expensive.  i know this s crazy, but what are your thoughts on han-ram? i know hes expensive, and just had surgery, and has make-up issues, and had an awful 2011, but he might be an option.

    • Beauford 4 years ago

“…he’s expensive, and just had surgery, and has make-up issues, and had an awful 2011…”

      You answered your own question.

  8. Jimbo504 4 years ago

step 1: let TLR go to the White Sox.
step 2: Bring Francona to the Cardinals.
    step 3: profit.

god have mercy on us!!!!!!! what are we going to  do without pat misch?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  10. Red_Line_9 4 years ago

I’d just love to see Tony LaRussa over manage the Sox bullpen.

  11. JestersDead86 4 years ago

Braves need power outfielders! End of story.

  12. Matt Talbert 4 years ago

I would like Jose Reyes but not at the length of the contract he is seeking.   There aren’t any knock down options on the FA market nor is there much on the trade market.   Maybe a Sox-Braves deal for  Lowrie for IDK maybe a JJ Hoover type.  I still don’t see that happening though.  Atlanta will probably go after Josh Willingham and maybe a player like Mark DeRosa (who can play some SS as well).  There just aren’t many good fit options.  I would have agreed on JJ Hardy, however the issue there is Baltimore just gave him a solid contract for both sides, they won’t move him. I doubt Boston will sign Reyes when they have Iglesias on their farm and that is pretty much the only position in need.  Kalish/Reddick probably man RF LF/CF/2b/1b studs, catcher covered with Lavarnway and Salty.  See.

  13. Matt Talbert 4 years ago

Josh Willingham is a possibility for the Braves and considering his recent second half prowess that is exactly what we need, someone who can hit in the 2nd half.

  14. NYBravosFan10 4 years ago

    he eats patience too

  15. Mike Pelfrey!

  16. Dylan 4 years ago

    Joe Blanton

  17. jwsox 4 years ago

actually wouldnt be that bad…besides the money he is a ground ball pitcher..which would help out on colorado and wouldnt take that much to get him i would assume

  18. BaseballLogic_Braves 4 years ago

But we need offense just as much as defense.

  19. BaseballLogic_Braves 4 years ago

    Alright then.

  20. bomberj11 4 years ago

…and that’s how Scott Boras markets his clients.

  21. 5_tool_MiLB_fool 4 years ago

he have a joe blanton in jason hammel

    PASS

  22. Phillies_Aces35 4 years ago

He’s a ground ball pitcher but he relies on movement. The thin air would hurt him wouldn’t it?

If Colorado wants Joe Blanton though, they can have him for a large coffee and a Boston Cream doughnut.

  23. myname_989 4 years ago

    SMH

  24. Joe Valenti 4 years ago

where are you gonna find a Boston Cream doughnut in Philly..maybe the sox should trade for him

  25. jwsox 4 years ago

    i was talking about lowe

  26. Phillies_Aces35 4 years ago

It was a reference to a fan video that was made right after Cliff Lee signed with the team. I wasn’t sure if anyone would get the reference.
