Twins Claim Pedro Florimon

By Tim Dierkes | December 5, 2011 at 1:22pm CDT

The Twins claimed shortstop Pedro Florimon off waivers from the Orioles, tweets MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.  Florimon, 24, hit .267/.344/.396 for the Orioles' Double-A club this year.  The switch-hitter is a flashy but erratic defender, wrote Baseball America prior to the season.  BA ranked him 29th among Orioles prospects at that point, questioning his ability to hit advanced pitching.

The Orioles also announced they've outrighted lefty Pedro Viola to Triple-A, leaving their 40-man roster at 39.

Are the Twins trying to hold a monopoly on all weak hitting middle infielders or something?

Weird that they’d take him. I wonder if this means Baltimore is going to get raided come Rule 5 time

He was my next pick to be removed from the roster. Completely overmatched in his call-up, and not very good in the minors, either. No loss here.

Here you have the Twins big off season acquisition. Payroll is at its maximum and this is a vintage Terry Ryan move.  They actually envision him as Cuddyer’s replacement in right field. The only drawback is now they have to raise ticket prices.

Let me guess. You’re mad at the Twins for not making the playoffs this past season.

And no, payroll is close, but not at its max yet. I think they still have about $10 mill to play with.

As for Cuddy’s replacement. Well, that is probably going to be Joe Benson or (if they really want to roll the dice defensively) Plouffe or Parmalee. This signing is a pure depth signing

I hope that the Twins make him stop switch hitting and only have him hit from the left side.  He would be much better off.

Doesn’t look too promising, but as a Twins fan I like the move. They need help at SS and it’s not like there are any teams out there willing to give proven major-league SS talent away for free.

Wait, that rings a bell…Baltimore…Short stop given away for free…(cries self to sleep)

Let’s make one thing clear: Florimon is not major league talent.

I have been told the Twins have their eyes on some other players as well and will be major players for Ben Sheets, Joe Crede, Kelvim Escobar, Jamie Moyer and were in on Pedro Martinez before he retired. They are interested in Nick Johnson as well as they envision him as Morneau’s replacement when he is injured the first week of April. (Twins beat writers will still give him MVP votes)  It does not end there as they plan to invite a number of players to Spring Training including Jose Offerman, Matt Stairs, David Wells, and Jessie Orosco.

Terry Ryan and Ron Gardenhoser have issued a mandate that with the expanded playoffs there is no reason they cannot once again make the playoffs and then be swept by their opponents.

And I have heard that the Yankees are interested in bringing back Brian McNamee as their trainer.

My sources are as credible as yours.

Depth signing. Probably going to be a Red Wing this season.

Still, maybe working with Bruno could help him. If only slightly.
