Marlins Notes: Cespedes, Sanchez, Oviedo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 2, 2012 at 3:22pm CDT

The Marlins’ offseason is nearing completion, but there’s business to attend to before Opening Day. Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel has the latest from team president David Samson…

  • Samson isn’t sure whether Yoenis Cespedes will visit the Miami area before deciding where to sign, but the sides continue to talk. “Our offseason is not dependent on signing Cespedes at all,” Samson said.
  • Samson ruled out an extension for Anibal Sanchez, at least for now. Sanchez’s arbitration hearing will take place tomorrow, so we’ll soon know whether he’ll earn $8MM or $6.9MM in 2012. I examined Sanchez as an extension candidate earlier this week.
  • Samson doesn’t expect Juan Carlos Oviedo to be on the Marlins’ Opening Day roster, but he said the 29-year-old right-hander will likely be in Spring Training. MLB may discipline Oviedo for falsifying his identity.
  • Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson are ready for the season, Samson said.

Come on Giants pull your head out and be the quiet sleeper team that comes out of nowhere and sign this guy! I know it will never happen but one can always wish…

“MLB may discipline Oviedo for falsifying his identity.”

Can’t wait to hear this… Anything over a slap on the wrist from Selig will have him shaking in his boots. He is terrified of everything, including the MLBPA and needs to grow a spine for a change. Here is the perfect opportunity to do something.

    Edit:

The Fish signed Buehrle to a way to much contract.. They had better find enough for Sanchez or find out the hard way what a legitimate #2 gets on the open market and also.. What their OWN #1 from last year is worth with the continual health of JJ always up in the air.

Letting Anibel walk would be a monumental blunder.

This just in Zambrano on the restricted list after a dugout altercation with Logan Morrison following Morrison watching a ball fly over the left field wall. Morrison took exception to Zambrano yelling at his team for poor play.

U know… I watch most of the Fish games and Lomo os the LAST person Z had better get onto when he is giving up hit after hit and then a fielder makes a mistake.. LoMo just might rearrange his dental work that should have been done years ago.

It is pretty crazy that the Tigers are still in on Cespedes. If they did sign him, he would basically take at bats away from Ryan Raburn in LF. They could let Delmon Young walk after the season and let Martinez DH.

I still can see the Marlins offering something stupid for Cespedes, though.

The fish need to sign Anibal. he has the tools to be amazing starter. he is a great number two and would help many teams…so i am sure other teams will snatch him up min free agency. They should at least try to sign him, he has injury history so they could try lowballing him to see what happens. try 4/38 and see what happens, that would be a steal if he accepted.
