Quick Hits: Dickey, Mariners, Byrd

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 13, 2012 at 4:20pm CDT

The Yankees signed right-hander Cory Wade on this date last year, just two days after the Rays released him. The 29-year-old has pitched 67 total innings for the Yankees in the past year and he owns a 2.28 ERA with 8.1 K/9 and 1.7 BB/9 in pinstripes. Here are today's links…

  • Mets right-hander R.A. Dickey told Newsday’s David Lennon that he hopes "to be the best pitcher in the big leagues." The 37-year-old knuckleballer has a 2.44 ERA with 8.7 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 81 innings heading into tonight's start against the Rays. The Mets figure to exercise his 2013 option after the season.
  • George Soto, the son of Dominican trainer Enrique Soto, presented himself as four years younger than he really was when he signed a $700K deal with the Mariners in 2007, Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. Soto was 21 when he signed, not 17, as he suggested.
  • There have been a number of inquiries on outfielder Marlon Byrd, but no deal is imminent, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports (on Twitter). The Red Sox released Byrd yesterday, making the ACES client a free agent.

Dickey is in his prime years for a knuckleballer. Hope he can have 2-3 more at least like he has had the last couple.

I’m sure Dickey and his agent are both praying that his dominance continues through next season.

I’m just hoping Byrd doesn’t sign with the Indians. It’d really screw up the chances of the Cubs moving Soriano.

I heard on the radio that the Indians are in on Byrd and there is talk locally that they are also interested in Youk and may try and make a deal for both Youk and Byrd .

The thought is Youk would take over at 1st base with Kotchman being cut a and Byrd would take over as the everyday LF and Damon and Lopez would be the DH until Hafner returns.

Then Cunningham would be cut to make room for Byrd on the 40 man roster the indians have held onto him because he is the only back up CF with Byrd able to play CF in a pinch this would make Cunningham expendable he would have to pass through waivers to be sent to AAA.

But that is the rumor I heard on local radio this afternoon.

No idea what players from the Indians would be in play to make the deal happen.
