Javy Guerra Drawing Trade Interest

By charliewilmoth | March 19, 2014 at 1:42pm CDT

Dodgers reliever Javy Guerra is drawing trade interest from several teams, a source tells MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo (via Twitter). The Dodgers designated Guerra for assignment last weekend.

It's not surprising that Guerra is attracting interest. He was a key part of the Dodgers' bullpens in both 2011 and 2012, serving as their closer in parts of both seasons. He spent much of 2013 in Triple-A Albuquerque, but he posted good numbers in a tough environment for pitchers, with a 3.66 ERA, 8.2 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 39 1/3 innings. He's also only 28 and is not yet arbitration-eligible. He is out of options, which limited the Dodgers' flexibility with him following an offseason in which they signed free-agent relievers Brian Wilson, Chris Perez and Jamey Wright.

Only problem is that we have a few BP pitchers who are out of options as well

Just make a flip flop with one of them for him, depending who it is

That makes absolutely no sense from the Dodgers point of view though. They DFA’d Guerra precisely because he was out of options, so why flop him for another of the same ilk?

Dodgers are looking for catching depth.

Well, you DFA him, so you aren’t going to be getting anything really for him. Ask for too much then teams will just wait till he’s on waivers or FA

Not necessarily. If two or three teams showed interest, then there’s a chance someone wants him bad enough to make a trade and make sure he doesn’t make it to FA.

You don’t think the Dodgers would explore that before designating him for assignment and letting every team know he will be free in 10 days if they don’t trade him?

Sure, but they needed a spot for Figgins (for some reason). I have no idea where they could be in negotiations, I’m just trying to come up with an idea why they would do this. Your guess is as good as mine.

LAD isn’t going to get an MLB ready catcher for a 28 year old RP who spent last year in the minors.

Make deal with Philly to secure Rosin’s rights (so he doesn’t have to stay on MLB roster if there is no room)
