Bobby Parnell Rumors
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 7, 2009 at 4:58pm CST]
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says Javier Vazquez has more value than any available hitter. Here are the details and the rest of Rosenthal's rumors: Not even Matt Holliday or Corey Hart would be fair value for Vazquez, so Rosenthal asks why the Braves would want to trade him at all. The Mets inquired on Scott Hairston, who could have been an affordable stopgap, but balked when the Padres asked for Bobby Parnell. The Marlins offered Gaby Sanchez for Manny Delcarmen, but the Red Sox weren't interested. The Mariners, Tigers and Rays weren't far from agreeing to a deal that...

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark asks some thoughtful baseball people why we're not greeting Manny Ramirez like the "team-wrecking, alibi-distorting, female-fertility-drug-popping scoundrel he is." And, of course, Stark has piles of rumors. Here they are: The Mets were never willing to move Bobby Parnell or other top young arms for Mark DeRosa, so they weren't as close to acquiring him as the Reds and Cubs were. The Phillies, Marlins and Giants were also in the mix. The Indians are more interested in dealing Rafael Bentancourt than Kerry Wood, whose contract ($15MM remaining) would be hard to move. The Royals will listen on...

We know the Mets have holes in the rotation, infield and outfield since many of their stars are on the DL. So what kind of resources do they have in the minor leagues? Yahoo's Gordon Edes takes a closer look at the Mets' minor league system to see which players might be appealing trade chips: The bottom line: the Mets don't have much to deal Washington asked about Bobby Parnell in a deal for Nick Johnson, but the Mets are reluctant to deal their young reliever. One scout said Jonathon Niese and Eddie Kunz are the most interesting pieces in...

In his latest blog post at ESPN.com, Peter Gammons writes that "unless someone comes up with a Justin Smoak, Matt LaPorta or Brett Wallace," the Red Sox will hold on to Brad Penny and enjoy the depth. He says no one will offer up a prospect like that for a few months of Penny. Here's the rest of Gammons' rumors: Takashi Saito is the pitcher on Boston's staff most likely to be traded. Jake Peavy and Erik Bedard "probably won't be tradeable before Aug. 1" because of their injuries. Jarrod Washburn could be had. The Red Sox have talked to...

It is a given that with the news today that J.J. Putz will miss upwards of the next three months, Jose Reyes out an undetermined length of time, and Carlos Delgado still far from resuming baseball activity, that the Mets will be at the center of any number of rumors. But what is unclear at this point is just how New York can make deals, with the depth an organization would trade now missing from the Mets. After all, it was assumed that any deal the Mets would make for either Nick Johnson of the Nationals or Aubrey Huff of...

8:10pm: David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on the Red Sox-Francoeur rumor: Talked to someone in Braves organization who sort of dismissed the Red Sox rumor. Said he hadn’t heard one thing about them having any serious interest in Francoeur or scouting him recently. 9:01am: Yahoo's Gordon Edes wrote about many different trade scenarios in his column last night. Edes seconds Ken Rosenthal's rumor that the Red Sox have been scouting Jeff Francoeur. The Nationals have been scouting the Mets' Triple and Double A teams, trying to figure out a possible return for Nick Johnson. Names of interest for Washington:...

ESPN.com's Tim Kurkjian takes a close look at the Nationals in his latest column and concludes that they have good baseball teams to look forward to. Along the way, he turns up some Nats rumors: Stephen Strasburg pulled an oblique muscle Wednesday, but acting GM Mike Rizzo says he's not concerned, repeating a line we've heard before: "If the draft was today, we would select Stephen Strasburg." Kurkjian hears that it will cost the Nationals between $25-50MM to sign Strasburg for six years. Since the Washington 'pen has struggled so much, there's a good chance the Nats will add a...

9:06pm: Ken Williams speaks. No Dye trade, but plenty of interest. 6:26pm: Dusty Baker spoke about the Dye trade talks today, saying he thought they were "kind of off because of economics and because everybody wants your young players." MONDAY, 4:24pm: McCoy talks more about the rumor he originated. He said a reliable White Sox insider told him the Dye deal was in place and wonders if Ken Williams changed his mind. SUNDAY, 10:06pm: Walt Jocketty on the report: "Wrong. It's not even close." The Reds haven't had talks with the Sox since before Thanksgiving. 9:32pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick adds...

Let's try to decipher the Mets' strategy for acquiring a new closer. Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post says the Mets will pursue a free agent out of the gate, perhaps with Brian Fuentes ranked above Francisco Rodriguez on their list. Still, K-Rod's agent noted that they're not "wedded" to a five-year deal, and he didn't toss the reported $15MM demand out there. Hubbuch believes the Mets will move on to trade targets such as Bobby Jenks and Huston Street if they fail to sign Fuentes or Rodriguez. Ken Davidoff and David Lennon mention J.J. Putz as well, while...

According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, White Sox GM and other front office members are evaluating talent at the Arizona Fall League for a possible Jermaine Dye trade. Dye can block trades to six teams, but Williams has a short list of suitors for him. He is set to earn $11.5MM in '09 and has a $12MM mutual option for '10 with a $1MM buyout. Dye, 35 in January, hit .292/.344/.541 in 645 plate appearances. He plays a below-average right field, according to the plus/minus system. The Rays, Angels, Braves, Mets, Phillies, and Reds could be in the...
