Including a couple of Giants prospects, catcher Buster Posey and right-hander Kevin Pucetas, San Francisco has invited 16 players to its Spring Training camp, Chris Haft of MLB.com reports. The rest of the list: third baseman Jesus Guzman; infielders Scott McClain and Ivan Ochoa; right-handers Francis Beltran, Brandon Medders and Justin Miller; catcher Eli Whiteside; first baseman-outfielder Josh Phelps; outfielder Andres Torres; catcher Todd Jennings; infielder Jake Wald; catcher Jackson Williams; right-hander Ronnie Ray; infielder Matt Downs. Pitchers and catchers report Feb. 14.

Nice move by the Giants today, as they signed first baseman Josh Phelps to a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Phelps, 30, hit .291/.373/.568 with 31 home runs in Triple A this year. He has an .815 OPS in his big league career, and could provide decent pop for the league minimum if given the opportunity.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals designated first baseman Josh Phelps for assignment today and claimed lefty reliever Charlie Manning off waivers from the Nationals. Phelps, 30, has been with seven organizations. Things looked promising when he came up in 2002 and snagged some ROY votes with .924 OPS in a half-season. He hit 31 home runs in Triple A this year, but it was his fourth extended stint at the level. Manning, 29, is also a minor league veteran. The Cards are his fourth organization; he debuted as a 29 year-old rookie with the Nationals this year....

Random rumors and links for your perusal... The Cardinals inked Josh Phelps to a minor league deal that could be worth up to $1MM. I always liked Phelps; he's a more than capable bench guy. The Red Sox bit the bullet and brought Doug Mirabelli back for another round. Tony Massarotti notes that the Red Sox may sign Jason Varitek to an extension this spring worth upward of $10MM annually.
