Latest On Yankees’ Pursuit Of Elite Relief Arms

By Steve Adams | July 31, 2015 at 9:05am CDT

The Yankees have already been connected to Craig Kimbrel this morning, and it’s becoming apparent that they’re in the mix for most of the top relief arms on the market at this point. We’ll keep track of that pursuit in this post…

  • The Yankees are waiting on the Padres in regards to Kimbrel but could turn to the Marlins’ Carter Capps, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Jayson Stark of ESPN takes it a step further, saying that the Yankees are tiring of waiting on San Diego and are already talking to Miami (Twitter link).

Earlier Updates

  • The Yankees are one of five teams that are “aggressively pursuing” a trade for Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today (on Twitter). Adding Chapman to the back of a bullpen that already includes Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances would give the Yankees perhaps the best late-inning relief trio in all of baseball. Adding a premium bullpen arm appears to be the focus for the Yankees now that a number of starting pitchers have already landed with other teams. New York, though, has been said to be unwilling to part with top prospects Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Greg Bird and Jorge Mateo in talks for Kimbrel, so it would stand to reason that they’re reluctant to do with Chapman as well, who comes with far less control. He can be a free agent after the 2016 season.

Get them both so CC only has to throw 3 innings a start.

not sure that would help, CC gave up 5 in three innings yesterday… they could use a starter more especially with all the injuries.

Yankees no way won’t get him asking price is too high judge or servino has to be apart of that deal and Mateo. Yanks don’t wanna offer up anything . it’d almost be like having Mariano Rivera back .

Kimbrel def has to close. He’s been the best closer in baseball over the past 5 years. Chapman idk.

Chapman has been every bit as good as Kimbrel. They are both in a league of their own.

Maybe it’s just me but I’m thinking the Yankees should be more concerned about their rotation for the stretch run. Pineda’s down for at least 3-4 weeks and is probably replaced by Warren. Sabathia is back to throwing stinkers and has left the game with his team trailing every start going back to the first week of June. Tanaka has looked very hittable the last few outings and his velocity was down a bit — could the elbow be acting up? The Yankees have to be on the hunt for a rotation piece if they want to hold onto the lead they’ve built up.

Reds need to hold firm for a top bat. No hurry for them to trade Chapman now, they cab wait until Winter.

I have no faith in cashmere that he will make a major move today to help this team. The red sox are in last and way out of the playoff race and they will probably do more then us.

I wonder if the Yankees would also take phillips if they insist on not giving up their top 4 prospects. Taking that contract off of Cincy’s books would help them reboot faster and allow the yankees to give up lower level prospects. Phillips could help them now with close to Gold Glove defense and can still hit a bit. Although the next few years he should continue to decline.

@jeffro , LOL, sorry but Judge and Severino aren’t being traded for closers. I doubt they will be traded at all. Word is Severino may come up very soon and join the rotation. Judge is the 13th best prospect in baseball. He isn’t going to a team that isn’t in need of one.

Why shouldn’t the Padres wait for what they want, they do not need to trade Kimbrel. The Padres have a very good 7th, 8th and 9th inning trio in their bullpen and I would like to see the keep them intact for next year. Unless the Yankee’s give up some quality, they are not getting Kimbrel and that would be a mistake. The Free Agent market for pitching is quite deep this year; therefore, giving up Severino would not be that big of a deal [Yankees can always buy a starter as good as Severino] in the long run for them and having an elite bullpen trio this season sure would give them a great shot at winning the World Series.

@MB923 then if I were the reds I’d stand Pat with Chapman. No way I’d let him go for some lower tier guys. You don’t wanna give up anything well hopefully you won’t see that 103 mph in the postseason maybe just maybe he’ll go to another contender and the yanks will face him in the ninth and be like damn shoulda made that move

@jeffro, Then stand pat. Either way, the Reds aren’t getting top 30 prospects for Chapman.

Why are they after relief arms? Starting pitching is the bigger need.
