D’Backs Designate Saul Rivera For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 8, 2010 at 6:13pm CDT

The D'Backs have designated Saul Rivera for assignment to make room for Blaine Boyer, according to the team. The D'Backs acquired Rivera from the Nationals for cash last month, but the right-hander wasn't the solution to Arizona's bullpen woes. Rivera, 32, appeared in four games for the D'Backs and allowed 11 hits and three walks in 3.2 innings, with one strikeout.

As a group, D'Backs relievers have a 7.19 ERA, so the team continues looking for bullpen arms. Boyer, 29 next month, was part of the problem for manager A.J. Hinch early in the season, when he posted a 7.82 ERA in 14 appearances. But the right-hander returned to the minors and pitched well. Boyer walked one and allowed five hits in six innings, striking out nine.

Blaine Boyer Clears Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | May 20, 2010 at 10:07pm CDT

THURSDAY, 10:07pm: Steve Gilbert of MLB.com tweets that Boyer has cleared waivers and will be reassigned to Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Reno tomorrow.

TUESDAY, 10:05am: The Diamondbacks designated reliever Blaine Boyer for assignment to make room for starter Billy Buckner, tweets MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez.  Buckner was recalled from Triple A to make today's start against the Marlins.

Boyer, 28, posted a 7.82 ERA, 4.3 K/9, and 7.8 BB/9 in 12.6 innings for the D'Backs this year.  This marks his third time being designated for assignment.  The Braves did it in April of '09 before sending him to the Cardinals for Brian Barton.  Boyer was designated again in June, at which point Arizona claimed him off waivers.

The Diamondbacks' bullpen shakeup began yesterday, as they released Bob Howry and acquired Saul Rivera.

Odds & Ends: Boyer, Chapman, Non-Tenders, Cubs

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2009 at 4:35pm CDT

Links for Friday…

  • The D'Backs agreed to a one-year deal with arbitration-eligible righty Blaine Boyer, tweets MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.
  • ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr. analyzes Aroldis Chapman's upcoming bullpen session – does it represent a loss of leverage?  Arangure Jr. notes that Chapman received one offer so far – $15.5MM – from the Red Sox back when he was represented by Edwin Mejia.
  • SI's Jon Heyman names his winners and losers of the Winter Meetings.
  • Royals GM Dayton Moore expects a bigger non-tender group than years past, writes Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.
  • Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald expects the Cubs to tender contracts to Mike Fontenot, Koyie Hill, Sean Marshall, Jeff Baker, and Angel Guzman, but not lefty Neal Cotts.  Cotts is coming back from Tommy John surgery, and the Cubs could re-sign him to a minor league deal.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post criticizes the New York Times for letting his good friend Jack Curry go.
  • MLB.com's Carrie Muskat says the Cubs acquired righty Arismendy Mota from the Nationals for cash considerations.  Mota was taken by the Nats from the White Sox with the first pick of the Triple A phase of the Rule 5 draft yesterday.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick believes that while the free agent dollars are flowing now, "the euphoria will fade after the New Year."
  • The Nationals officially announced their two-year deal for Ivan Rodriguez today.

D’Backs Claim Blaine Boyer Off Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 8, 2009 at 4:30pm CDT

According to the Arizona Republic the D'Backs claimed pitcher Blaine Boyer off waivers from the Cardinals, who designated him for assignment last week. The 27-year-old had a 4.41 ERA in 15 appearances with the Cards. It's been a hectic year for Boyer, who was traded from Atlanta to St. Louis back in April.

Odds & Ends: Nady, Doumit, Boyer

Links for Tuesday…

  • SI.com's Jon Heyman says Xavier Nady will not require elbow surgery and may return within a month.
  • Bad news for the Pirates: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says catcher Ryan Doumit will likely miss 8-10 weeks due to wrist surgery.

  • Wallace Matthews and Ken Davidoff of Newsday each write about Jason Giambi's time in New York.
  • With news that Demetri Martin will play Paul DePodesta in the Moneyball movie, Jon Weisman says not to judge the film before watching it.  Personally I am looking forward to the movie.  Martin is hilarious and Brad Pitt can be very good (12 Monkeys being the best example).
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post wonders why the Mets paid Fernando Tatis $1.7MM if they weren't committed to using him.
  • Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has quotes from Cardinals GM John Mozeliak about the Brian Barton–Blaine Boyer swap.

Cardinals Acquire Blaine Boyer For Brian Barton

By Tim Dierkes | April 20, 2009 at 3:46pm CDT

According to a press release, the Cardinals acquired reliever Blaine Boyer from the Braves for outfielder Brian Barton.

Boyer, 27, was designated for assignment on Saturday to make room for Jo-Jo Reyes.  When he's right, Boyer is able to get strikeouts and groundballs.  Last year he dealt with a sore knee.

Barton, 26, was taken by the Cardinals from the Indians in the 2007 Rule 5 draft.  He hit .268/.354/.392 in 179 plate appearances last year while playing mostly left field.  Barton, an aerospace engineering major in college, was a well-regarded five-tool player prior to a 2006 knee injury.  Atlanta's less-crowded outfield should present a better opportunity than St. Louis, though Barton will initially head to Triple A.

Why The Braves-Peavy Trade Fell Apart

By Tim Dierkes | December 14, 2008 at 9:53pm CDT

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune had an article yesterday involving a couple of failed Padres trades.

Krasovic says the Padres and Braves were discussing a 4-for-1 Jake Peavy deal in November.  Yunel Escobar and Gorkys Hernadez were agreed upon.  The conflict came as the Padres wanted Charlie Morton over Jo-Jo Reyes as well as Jeff Locke or Tyler Flowers over Blaine Boyer.  To me that gap looks pretty sizeable, so maybe the trade was never close.  At this point it seems like the Braves could end up with Javier Vazquez and Kenshin Kawakami as their rotation upgrades.  They’ve reportedly made Escobar unavailable, leading Dan Hayes of the North County Times to suggest the Braves would have to remove Tommy Hanson’s apparent "untouchable" tag to get Peavy.  Everything I’ve read about Hanson has said the Braves are adamant about keeping him.

Krasovic also says the Giants made a run at shortstop Khalil Greene before he was dealt to the Cardinals.

Braves, Cardinals Talk Ankiel

By Tim Dierkes | December 9, 2008 at 1:22am CDT

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Braves and Cardinals discussed a trade for outfielder Rick Ankiel.  However, the Braves did not want to give up Mike Gonzalez.  I’m surprised; one year of Gonzalez for one of Ankiel sounds like a good swap for the Braves.

Rosenthal says the two teams also talked about swapping Blaine Boyer for Joe Mather, but that didn’t pan out either.
