Brandon Webb

Odds & Ends: Webb, Feliz, Griffey

By Eddie Schmid | August 16, 2009 at 6:06pm CDT

A few links as the time ticks away before the August 17th signing deadline–just 30 hours left:

  • Steve Gilbert at MLB.com (via Twitter) heard this from Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes on a team broadcast about the possibility of picking up the injured Brandon Webb's $8.5MM option next year: "If it's close, he'll probably get the benefit of the doubt."
  • After watching the fireballing Neftali Feliz in person, John Beamer at the Hardball Times believes it's safe to declare the Mark Teixeira trade a victory for the Rangers.
  • Tyler Kepner at the New York Times has a neat historical piece about how the Mariners almost passed on Ken Griffey Jr. in the 1987 draft for pitcher Mike Harkey.
  • As the signing deadline approaches and the waiver deadline looms in just two weeks, be sure to keep up to speed by following MLB Trade Rumors on Twitter.

Olney On Rios, Upton, Davis, Smoltz, Webb

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 11, 2009 at 11:12am CDT

ESPN.com's Buster Olney suggests that Alex Rios would sign a deal worth $20MM over two years or $30MM over three if he were a free agent right now. That means the White Sox are paying more than market value for their new outfielder, but clubs can't often acquire talented players in their prime. Here are the rest of Olney's rumors:

  • The White Sox are better equipped to win this year and, even though they took on lots of money, they didn't give up a single player to acquire Rios.
  • Some talent evaluators are convinced the Rays will listen to offers for B.J. Upton this offseason.
  • Olney hears that Doug Davis is currently on waivers and John Smoltz cleared waivers.
  • If the D'Backs don't exercise Brandon Webb's $8.5MM option for 2010, he could become a gamble for big-market teams like the Yankees and Red Sox.

Odds And Ends: Webb, Tazawa, Morgan, Aurilia

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 11, 2009 at 10:11am CDT

A few links for the morning…

  • Today's chat starts at 2pm CST.
  • Brandon Webb says he'll pitch next year and he hopes it's with the D'Backs, according to Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic. The team has the option of paying Webb $8.5MM or buying him out for $2MM.
  • MLB.com's Jason Beck says the Tigers, who had interest in Junichi Tazawa last Winter, now have to face the righty as he makes his first MLB start.
  • How about this stat, from Tracee Hamilton of the Washington Post: The Nats were 21st in the majors in runs before Nyjer Morgan's arrival. Since trading for him, they're third.
  • MLB.com's Chris Haft wonders if the Giants may be about to release Rich Aurilia.
  • Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that the Red Sox agreed to sign 10th rounder Brandon Jacobs for $750k, which exceeds the recommended bonus by about $600k.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle hears that the A's have budgeted first round money for fourth rounder Max Stassi. However, there appears to be a 50% chance he accepts a scholarship at UCLA instead of going pro.

Brandon Webb To Undergo Surgery

By Steve Adams | August 2, 2009 at 2:45pm CDT

According to a report from Mark Maynard of Brandon Webb's hometown Ashland, Kentucky, the Diamondbacks injured ace will undergo surgery on Monday that will end any hopes of him pitching in 2009.

Webb had gone through two different periods of rest and strengthening with visions of pitching in September. However, the stiffness in his right shoulder has not improved. The recovery time from the procedure is not yet known.

The Diamondbacks have an $8.5MM option or a $2MM buyout on Webb after this season, which they must decide on within five days of the World Series. General manager Josh Byrnes commented on the situation:

“We’ve still got in the neighborhood of 100 days before we have to make that decision… He’s been tremendous pitcher for this organization and he’s obviously a tremendous person within the walls of the organization. We’re going to use all the information we can gather in the next 100 days or so to make the best decision.”

For a healthy Webb, the option would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately for Arizona, that's not the case. Should the D'Backs bring him back, regardless of health, or should they part ways with one of the faces of their franchise following the 2009 season?

Yankees Eyeing Corey Patterson, Josh Anderson

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 7:41am CDT

We already knew of the Yankees' interest in recently-designated outfielder Josh Anderson; Joel Sherman of the New York Post says to add the newly-released Corey Patterson to the list.  Sherman says the goal is to find a fill-in for Brett Gardner, who broke his thumb on Saturday.  Anderson and Patterson both have speed, at least.

In that same blog post, Sherman draws a connection between Chien-Ming Wang and Brandon Webb.  He wonders whether both pitchers could hit the free agent market after this season.  On a related note, we've heard that Webb will have shoulder surgery on Monday; hopefully just a clean-up.

Odds And Ends: Mariners, Webb, Donnelly

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 1, 2009 at 1:00pm CDT

Some links for the afternoon…

  • John McGrath of the Tacoma News Tribune says Greg Dobbs could be the answer for the Mariners at third base.
  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times considers the possibility that the Mariners could deal Erik Bedard or Jarrod Washburn and still contend. He concludes that the team needs both pitchers to make the playoffs.
  • Dayn Perry of FOX Sports looks at projected stats for a handful of trade candidates.
  • Brandon Webb won't have to undergo shoulder surgery, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. Instead, he'll aim for a September return.
  • Mike Aviles isn't so lucky. He'll miss the rest of the season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, according to MLB.com's Dick Kaegel
  • Diamond Leung reports that Brendan Donnelly left the Astros organization to become a free agent.
  • Tune in to 1570 WSCO in Green Bay at 5:05 CST as I'll be talking rumors.

Odds And Ends: Crisp, Benitez, Webb

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 24, 2009 at 10:26am CDT

On this day in MLBTR history, the Padres hadn't decided whether to be buyers or sellers. A lot's changed since last year, but many teams face a similar dilemma now. Here are some links for the morning…

  • Coco Crisp will miss the rest of the season with a torn labrum, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.
  • Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger reports that former MLB closer Armando Benitez is pitching for the Newark Bears, hoping for another shot in the big leagues.
  • Prospect Bryce Harper knows he's "not LeBron yet," according to the AP.
  • Mark Teixeira says he loved playing in Atlanta and still considers it a "home" of his, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.
  • D'Backs first rounder A.J. Pollock will begin his pro career in Class A South Bend, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez.
  • Jeff Wilson of the Dallas Morning News says the Rangers want to improve their 'pen.
  • A pair of starters may not pitch again this season. Nick Piecoro says Brandon Webb may need shoulder surgery and Mike DiGiovanna says Kelvim Escobar has a "deep ache" in his shoulder.

Odds & Ends: Webb, Padres, Corpas, Nationals

By Mike Axisa | June 19, 2009 at 8:38pm CDT

Some Friday evening linkage…

  • Nick Piecoro says that if Brandon Webb's latest setback requires surgery, it would give the club pause about picking up his $8.5MM option for 2010.
  • Paul DePodesta runs through all of the Padres' recent roster moves.
  • Rockies reliever Manny Corpas had an MRI on his right elbow today according to Patrick Saunders. Both the team and Corpas were surprised since he has pitched effectively of late. Depending on the severity of the injury, this may impact the Rockies' decision to trade closer Huston Street.
  • Thomas Boswell at The Washington Post says we "will see little or nothing for a long time" regarding negotiations with first overall pick Stephen Strasburg. Boswell also says the Nats have begun to discuss which free agents they will pursue next offseason, and the general assumption is that they will go after a reliever.
  • Alyson Footer tweets that the Astros have signed three draft picks, including third rounder Jonathan Meyer.
  • CBSsports.com's Scott Miller spoke to Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik, who indicated that they haven't decided to sell off movable pieces yet.
  • Dean Jones Jr. writes that the Orioles signed a pair of undrafted free agents out of Towson: infielder Gary Helmick and catcher Jason Stifler.

Odds And Ends: Webb, Doumit, Blanks

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 19, 2009 at 10:53am CDT

Links for Friday morning…

  • Bill Conlin of the Philadelphia Daily News argues the Phillies should declare prospect Michael Taylor off-limits.
  • Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post says the 2009 Rockies are nothing like the version that stunned us with a late-season surge two Septembers ago.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports argues the Nationals need to fire Manny Acta or assure him that he'll manage all season.
  • Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says Brandon Webb had a setback and could miss the entire year.
  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wonders whether the Pirates have considered moving Ryan Doumit to first base or right field when he returns.
  • The Padres called up their top prospect, Kyle Blanks, according to Baseball America's John Manuel.
  • Ben Klayman and Megan Davies of Reuters report that the Ricketts family has a rival in its bid to buy the Cubs, as an old bidder is again involved.

Stark On Peavy, Oswalt, Phillies, DeRosa, Giants

By Tim Dierkes | May 28, 2009 at 2:28pm CDT

Let's take a look at the latest Rumblings and Grumblings column from ESPN's Jayson Stark.

  • The Padres' recent winning streak has not changed their intention of trading Jake Peavy.  The Dodgers and Cubs are in Peavy's first tier of choices, follwed by the Giants, Cardinals, and Astros.  The Angels would be the one AL team he'd consider.  The East Coast is a long shot.  Also, Peavy will want his 2011-13 partial no-trade clause to become a full no-trade.  Peavy's friend Roy Oswalt has been unsuccessful in lobbying Astros owner Drayton McLane, as the 'Stros can't take on Peavy's contract.  As for the Dodgers, GM Ned Colletti told the L.A. Times he hasn't talked to the Padres about Peavy since the pitcher vetoed the White Sox deal.
  • Stark talked to scouts who believe Oswalt has "lost his edge" and needs a change of scenery.  The Phillies have inquired on him, but they've asked about everyone: Peavy, Brandon Webb, Roy Halladay, Doug Davis, Erik Bedard, Cliff Lee, Aaron Harang, Brad Penny, Chris Young and Jason Marquis.  Popular Phillies trade targets include Lou Marson, Jason Donald, Carlos Carrasco, Travis D'Arnaud, Freddy Galvis, Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown, and Antonio Bastardo.
  • The Braves are interested in bringing Mark DeRosa back to Atlanta.  He came up with them and was non-tendered in '04 after tearing his ACL.  But to deal young arms, the Braves would want an impact bat.  Stark says they're "mostly listening" rather than shopping Jeff Francoeur.  His trade value is difficult to gauge.
  • The Mets seem content to wait out the first base trade market.
  • The Giants seek a middle-of-the-order bat, and Jonathan Sanchez is being dangled.  Three targets they haven't had success on are Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu, and possibly Carlos Lee.  Lee, according to one Stark source, doesn't intend to waive his no-trade for anyone.
