KBO’s Samsung Lions Re-Sign Lewin Díaz, Denyi Reyes

By Darragh McDonald | November 25, 2024 at 4:00pm CDT

The Samsung Lions of the KBO League announced that they have re-signed first baseman Lewin Díaz and right-hander Denyi Reyes, per Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net and Jiheon Pae (X link). Díaz will get a $100K signing bonus, a $500K salary and $200K of incentives while Reyes gets a $200K signing bonus, $700K salary and $300K of incentives.

Díaz, now 28, was a very popular player during his time in North America, though without getting an extended big league opportunity. He started his major league career with the Marlins but only got limited looks in the three years from 2020 to 2022.

Having exhausted his options after that stretch, his grip on his roster spot became tenuous and he was designated for assignment by the Fish. Before the 2023 season started, he went to the Pirates, Orioles, Atlanta and Orioles again via waivers or cash trades. The O’s did eventually run him through waivers and didn’t call him up in 2023.

In general, Díaz has performed well everywhere except the majors. He hit .181/.227/.340 in his brief looks in the big leagues but had a much nicer line of .258/.340/.479 at the Triple-A level over the 2021-2023 seasons. He is also considered a strong defender at first base, so that made for an intriguing combination, likely why he kept getting so much attention.

He went to the Mexican League in 2024 and put up a huge slash of .376/.452/.647 in 75 games there. He then got a deal with the Lions in the middle of August, with a strong .282/.331/.518 line in 29 games in Korea, seemingly enough to convince the Lions to bring him back.

Reyes, now 28, was a similarly fringe roster player during his time in the affiliated ball. He got to make three appearances for the 2022 Orioles and then got into nine games for the 2023 Mets, posting a 6.26 earned run average in his 27 1/3 innings.

He posted some intriguing rate stats in the minors but was victimized by the long ball. From 2021 to 2023, he threw 209 1/3 innings on the farm with a 21.4% strikeout rate that was close to average and 5.7% walk rate that was quite strong. But thanks to 47 balls leaving the yard in that time, he had a 5.59 ERA.

Reyes signed with the Lions going into 2024 and went on to have a solid year, with the groundball-heavy league seeming to be a good fit for him. He logged 144 innings over 26 starts with a 3.81 ERA, 18.5% strikeout rate, 4.9% walk rate, 62.3% ground ball rate and 15 homers allowed. The Lions were evidently pleased with that performance and will bring him back for 2025.

Both players are still relatively young and could try to return to MLB in the future if they continue to have good results overseas, as players like Erick Fedde or Eric Thames have done. For now, they will lock in some decent money that’s in the vicinity of the MLB minimum, which will be $760K next year.

KBO’s Samsung Lions Sign Denyi Reyes

By Darragh McDonald | January 4, 2024 at 2:55pm CDT

The Samsung Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization have signed right-hander Denyi Reyes, per Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News. The deal is for $800K, including $200K of incentives.

Reyes, 27, has been a fringy major leaguer for the past few years. He was able to toss 7 2/3 innings for the Orioles in 2022 and 19 2/3 innings for the Mets in 2023. He has a combined 6.26 earned run average in that small sample of 27 1/3 frames. He was outrighted by the Mets at the beginning of the offseason and elected free agency.

A few years ago, he was a notable starting pitching prospect with the Red Sox. In 2018, he tossed 155 2/3 innings in the minors with a 1.97 ERA, split between Single-A and High-A. In 2019, he moved up to Double-A and threw 151 1/3 innings. His ERA jumped to 4.16 but he was still just 22 years old at the time.

The pandemic wiped out the minor leagues in 2020 and Reyes’s results have been on the tepid side since then. As mentioned, his small sample of major league work hasn’t been amazing and he also has a 6.30 ERA at the Triple-A level.

The Lions and Reyes will be hoping that a change of scenery can get him back on track. He will also lock in a salary figure higher than if he stayed in North America, where he likely would have been limited to minor league deals. If things go well overseas, Reyes is young enough that he could perhaps return to North America in a year or two, a path taken by players like Erick Fedde, Josh Lindblom, Merrill Kelly and others.

KBO teams are allowed a maximum of three foreign players and this will be the Lions’ third, as they already signed infielder David MacKinnon and right-hander Connor Seabold. As pointed out by Yoo, this means the Lions won’t be re-signing David Buchanan, who has spent the past four years pitching for the Lions with a 3.02 ERA in that time.

Mets Claim Zack Short From Tigers

By Leo Morgenstern | November 6, 2023 at 4:48pm CDT

Former Tigers infielder Zack Short has been claimed on waivers by the Mets, the Tigers announced. This comes amidst a flurry of roster moves for the Tigers, who needed to open up several spots on the 40-man ahead of the deadline to move players off of the 60-day injured list, as well as the deadline to add players to the 40-man before they can elect minor league free agency.

Drafted by the Cubs in 2016, Short was traded to the Tigers in 2020 in exchange for veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin. He made his big league debut the following season, appearing in 61 games for Detroit and struggling his way to a .141/.239/.282 batting line. The utility infielder spent almost all of the 2022 season at Triple-A, but he made his way back to the majors in April 2023 and never looked back. While no one could argue his bat was an asset, he posted a much-improved .204/.292/.339 slash line while showing off his defensive versatility all over the diamond. By the end of the year, he had appeared in 112 games, occasionally as a starter but just as often as a pinch runner or mid-game defensive replacement.

While his offense may never be a strength, Short draws walks well, and he can put his plus speed to work when he reaches base. Moreover, his defense might not stand out at any one position, but he is capable of covering second, third, and short, and even the outfield in a pinch. As long as he doesn’t regress at the plate, his flexibility could earn him another shot at MLB playing time next season, especially since he is out of minor league options.

In further Mets news, all six players the team placed on outright waivers last week have cleared, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Bryce Montes de Oca and Peyton Battenfield have been sent outright to Triple-A and will remain with the organization, while Tim Locastro, John Curtiss, Elieser Hernandez, and Denyi Reyes have elected free agency.

Mets Place Six Players On Outright Waivers

By Anthony Franco | November 2, 2023 at 7:37pm CDT

The Mets have put six players on outright waivers, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Outfielder Tim Locastro and pitchers Denyi Reyes, Bryce Montes de Oca, John Curtiss, Elieser Hernández and Peyton Battenfield are now available to other clubs.

Locastro, best known for his speed, got into 43 games. He hit .232/.338/.393 in 67 trips to the dish. Locastro has played for four major league clubs, compiling a .228/.327/.337 slash in 290 MLB contests. He has 45 stolen bases in 50 career attempts, including a perfect 6-6 showing this year.

Reyes and Hernández were expected to be depth starters for New York in 2023. The former pitched nine times (including three starts), turning in a 7.78 ERA across 19 2/3 innings. Hernández never pitched as a Met. Acquired in a trade with the Marlins last offseason, he spent almost the whole season on the injured list with shoulder and pectoral concerns.

Curtiss pitched 15 times for New York after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He posted a 4.58 ERA through 19 2/3 innings. His season ended a bit early when he underwent surgery to remove a loose body from his elbow, although he is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Montes de Oca lost the entire ’23 campaign after undergoing a Tommy John procedure in March. New York claimed Battenfield off waivers from the Guardians in the season’s final month, keeping him in Triple-A. Neither Montes de Oca nor Battenfield have the requisite service time to become free agents. They’d remain with the Mets as non-roster players if they clear waivers. The others will likely choose free agency unless another team places a claim.

Mets Designate Abraham Almonte For Assignment

By Mark Polishuk | August 12, 2023 at 4:36pm CDT

The Mets announced four roster moves in between games of their double-header with the Braves today, including the news that outfielder Abraham Almonte has been designated for assignment.  Right-hander Denyi Reyes was optioned to Triple-A, while righty Tyson Miller was called up from Triple-A and outfielder Tim Locastro was reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

Almonte signed a minor league deal with New York during the offseason, but he didn’t make his 2023 debut until four days ago, after the Mets selected his contract to the active roster.  With his appearance in the first game of the Atlanta double-header, Almonte’s tenure with the Mets could be over after four games, and one hit over 12 plate appearances.

The four-game cup of coffee at least ensured an 11th consecutive MLB season for Almonte, an Immaculate Grid favorite who has seen action with eight different Major League clubs.  The switch-hitter has a career .235/.302/.374 slash line over 1371 PA, as Almonte is known most for his outfield versatility than his prowess at the plate, though his glovework has allowed him to find backup or part-time roles for over a decade.

Assuming he clears waivers, Almonte has the right to elect free agency in the event an outright assignment, since he has been outrighed before in his career.  The Mets could also choose to release Almonte entirely, if they prefer to use younger players down the stretch rather than keep a veteran around at Triple-A.

Locastro returns after undergoing thumb surgery in May, and his thumb injury occurred during a rehab assignment when Locastro was already on the injured list recovering from back spasms.  The lengthy absence has limited Locastro to just 11 games, and he looks to get some outfield work while the Mets try to fill the void left by deadline trades and Starling Marte’s IL stint.

Mets Designate Jimmy Yacabonis For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | August 12, 2023 at 11:55am CDT

The Mets have announced to reporters, including Tim Britton of The Athletic, that right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis has been designated for assignment. His roster spot will go to Denyi Reyes, whose selection was reported yesterday.

Yacabonis, 31, began the year with the Mets on a minor league deal. This is the second time he has been designated for assignment by the club this year, as he was also on the roster from mid-April until late May, though he spent most of that time on the IL with a left quad strain. His first DFA resulted in him clearing waivers and accepting an outright assignment, which got him back onto the roster a week ago.

Between those two stints, he’s tossed 13 2/3 innings over seven outings, allowing 6.59 earned runs per nine frames. In last night’s 7-0 loss to Atlanta, he tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Tylor Megill, allowing one earned run. Though manager Buck Showalter was appreciative of that performance, it likely made him unavailable for today’s doubleheader. Since he’s out of options, he’s been squeezed off the roster and into DFA limbo for a second time this year.

The Mets will now have a week to put him on waivers. The last time this happened, he cleared and stuck around, which could perhaps play out again. Though it’s also possible some new job openings have opened up after various trades were made prior to the recent deadline. Yacabonis has a career ERA of 6.08 in 131 2/3 innings dating back to 2017. Though he’s out of options, he has less than two years of service time and could be theoretically retained for future seasons without a huge cost.

Mets To Select Denyi Reyes

By Anthony Franco | August 11, 2023 at 9:36pm CDT

The Mets will start right-hander Denyi Reyes in the first game of tomorrow’s doubleheader with Atlanta, the team informed reporters (including Tim Healey of Newsday). Since Reyes isn’t on the 40-man roster, New York will officially select his contract before the game.

Reyes made six appearances for New York earlier this season. An offseason minor league pickup, he made it to majors by the first week of the year. Reyes was on and off the active roster for the next couple months before being designated for assignment on July 4 and subsequently waived.

The 6’4″ hurler has allowed five runs in 7 1/3 innings over his big league work thus far. He has started 13 of 15 outings for Triple-A Syracuse, pitching to a 5.77 ERA through 64 innings. A sky-high 2.39 homers per nine innings has been the main culprit for the lackluster run prevention, although his 17.7% strikeout rate is a few points below average.

Reyes is a solid strike-thrower who’s capable of working multiple innings either out of the rotation or long relief. The Mets are headed into day two of a stretch of 14 games in 13 days. New York has a full 40-man roster, so they’ll need to make a corresponding transaction to accommodate his promotion.

Mets Outright Denyi Reyes

By Nick Deeds | July 9, 2023 at 2:26pm CDT

Per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, Mets reliever Denyi Reyes has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A. That leaves Reyes to remain in the Mets organization going forward. Reyes had been designated for assignment last week in order to make room for outfielder DJ Steward on the 40-man roster.

The 26-year-old righty made his major league debut with the Orioles last year, pitching to a 2.35 ERA in 7 2/3 innings of work before being outrighted off the 40-man roster following the 2022 campaign. Reyes elected free agency shortly thereafter and landed with the Mets on a minor league deal back in November.

While Reyes did not make the club’s initial Opening Day roster, he was added to the roster just days later after right-hander Tommy Hunter was placed on the injured list. In his first five appearances with the club this season, Reyes threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts against just two walks and three hits. Reyes’s impressive results led the club to option him down to Triple-A and attempt to stretch him out as a starter, but that plan quickly went off the rails. Reyes hasn’t had a scoreless appearance since being stretched out, allowing five runs in just one inning during his lone major league start of the season against the Braves. Since that disastrous start, Reyes owns a 6.81 ERA in 39 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level.

Given those struggles, it’s hardly a surprise that the Mets decided to pull the plug on Reyes as a member of the 40-man roster. Still, the right-hander could prove to be valuable depth for the club going forward if he can recapture the form he flashed earlier in the season out of the bullpen, given his status as an optionable relief arm in a Mets bullpen that ranks bottom ten in the majors with an ERA of 4.12.

Mets Select DJ Stewart, Designate Denyi Reyes For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | July 4, 2023 at 1:05pm CDT

The Mets made several roster moves today, as relayed by Tim Healey of Newsday. The club has activated right-hander Trevor Gott, whom they acquired from the Mariners in a trade yesterday, and selected the contract of outfielder DJ Stewart. To clear active roster space, they optioned right-hander Jeff Brigham and infielder Danny Mendick. To create a 40-man spot for Stewart, righty Denyi Reyes was designated for assignment.

Stewart, 29, spent the previous five seasons with the Orioles, mostly as a part-time player. He got into 195 games, hitting 26 home runs and walking in 13.2% of his plate appearances, though also striking out at a 26.8% rate. His overall .213/.327/.400 batting line in that time amounted to a wRC+ of 99, indicating he was just a hair below average. But since he was considered a poor defender in the outfield corners, that offense wasn’t enough to hold his roster spot.

He was outrighted by the O’s last year and later reached free agency, signing a minor league deal with the Mets. He’s been faring well in Triple-A Syracuse here in 2023, hitting 16 home runs so far and producing a .229/.362/.516 line for a 115 wRC+. The Mets will see if he can carry any of that production up with him to the big leagues. He still has an option and can be sent back down to the minors without being exposed to waivers.

In order to get Stewart onto the roster, the Mets have nudged Reyes off of it. He made his major league debut with the Orioles last year, tossing 7 2/3 innings with a 2.35 ERA in that small sample. He spent most of the year in Triple-A, posting a 7.17 ERA in 54 innings at that level. Like Stewart, he was outrighted off the Baltimore roster last year and signed a minor league deal with the Mets as a free agent.

Here in 2023, he was added to the club’s roster in the first week of the season but was later optioned with the club hoping to stretch him out for extra rotation depth. That plan hasn’t really worked out as Reyes has a 6.97 ERA in Triple-A this year, tossing 41 1/3 innings. The Mets will now have one week to trade Reyes or pass him through waivers. Despite his struggles this year, he still has an option remaining and is only 26 years old.

Mets Select Zach Muckenhirn

By Steve Adams | May 1, 2023 at 3:35pm CDT

3:35pm: Between games of today’s doubleheader, the Mets have now announced they’ve selected Muckenhirn to the roster. In a corresponding move, right-hander Stephen Ridings was transferred to the 60-day injured list. He’s been on the IL all year due to a lat strain and now won’t be eligible to return until late May at the earliest. The 60-day count goes from his initial IL placement, not today’s transfer. Additionally, righty Denyi Reyes was optioned between games of the twin bill while José Butto was recalled.

11:28am: The Mets are set to select the contract of left-handed reliever Zach Muckenhirn in advance of today’s doubleheader against the Braves, reports Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News (Twitter link). He’s not yet on the 40-man roster. The team has not formally announced the move, so it’s not yet clear whether Muckenhirn will be up for both games of the doubleheader or just the nightcap.

Muckenhirn, 28, inked a minor league deal with the Mets over the winter and has had a strong start in Triple-A Syracuse, where he’s held opponents to one run on 10 hits and four walks in 11 2/3 frames. The former 11th-round pick (2016, Orioles) also boasts a strong 51.3% ground-ball rate, but he’s punched out just four of his 47 opponents on the year so far (8.5%).

With Brooks Raley landing on the injured list due to elbow inflammation over the weekend and David Peterson being optioned to Syracuse as well, the Mets’ only lefty on the big league roster had been Joey Lucchesi, who’s currently working out of the rotation, Muckenhirn will give manager Buck Showalter an option in the bullpen for today’s twin bill and perhaps for the foreseeable future, depending on today’s bullpen usage.

Muckenhirn has spent the majority of his career in the Orioles organization, but he was with the White Sox organization in each of the past two seasons, generally pitching well with their Double-A and Triple-A clubs. In parts of three seasons at the Triple-A level, Muckenhirn has a 3.45 ERA with a 22.2% strikeout rate, 10.1% walk rate and a 44% ground-ball rate.
