Manny Ramirez

Latest Dodgers Info

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 8:03pm CDT

Alex Speier of WEEI has the latest Dodgers chatter, as GM Ned Colletti held court this evening.  Ned wasn’t in a very revealing mood.

  • Colletti reiterated that no offer has been made to Manny Ramirez.  He hasn’t met with Scott Boras yet.  Since the Dodgers have so many needs, Colletti would like to resolve the Manny situation quickly.  In Jerry Crasnick’s survey of 15 executives, 10 chose the Dodgers as Manny’s destination.  It’s unlikely that the Dodgers are able to sign Ramirez and C.C. Sabathia.
  • Those other needs include shortstop, third base, the bullpen, and the rotation.
  • Colletti was not sure whether Jeff Kent and/or Nomar Garciaparra will retire.

Odds and Ends: Pudge, Ohman, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 11:47am CDT

Rounding up linkage for Monday…

  • The Jays claimed two players off waivers: shortstop Angel Sanchez and pitcher Kelvin Jimenez.
  • The Cubs and Nationals swapped minor leaguers.  The Cubs sent pitcher Matt Avery to the Nats for another pitcher named Ryan Buchter.
  • Good stuff from ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick – he surveyed 15 front-office people on the top stories of the offseason.
  • One of a million conversations taking place at the GM meetings: Brian Cashman chatting with Walt Jocketty.
  • Tony Massarotti’s top five lies told during free agency.
  • Ken Davidoff names his top ten GMs.
  • Joe Posnanski on the Mike Jacobs–Leo Nunez trade.
  • River Ave. Blues explains why the Yankees should offer arbitration to Ivan Rodriguez.
  • The official list of the 191 players eligible for free agency.
  • The Braves hope to re-sign free agents Will Ohman, Greg Norton, and John Smoltz.  The Smoltz situation may not be resolved until January.
  • Tracy Ringolsby lists needs for every team.
  • The Tigers signed an independent league lefty named Kris Regas to a minor league deal.
  • John Shea says the Giants and A’s will consider the big-name free agent sluggers this winter.
  • Padres GM Kevin Towers doesn’t see Manny Ramirez signing until Christmas time.  He sees the New York and L.A. teams as suitors.
  • Joe Sheehan proposes five radical offseason moves.
  • The Cubs signed a couple of Korean players: catcher/outfielder Jae-hoon Ha and pitcher Soo-min Jung.

Phillies’ Offseason Agenda

By Tim Dierkes | November 3, 2008 at 11:13am CDT

12:47pm: Scott Lauber has the latest from the Amaro press conference.

  • Manny Ramirez seems unlikely as a left field solution.  Execs surveyed by Jerry Crasnick felt the same.
  • Burrell switched to a Philly-based agent, and talks will begin soon with the Phillies.
  • Pat Gillick will remain with the Phillies as a paid consultant.

11:13am: The Phillies locked up Ruben Amaro Jr. as their GM through 2011.  Items on his to-do list:

  • Left fielder Pat Burrell could be back if he accepts a two-year deal.  Otherwise, the Phils will kick the tires on Manny Ramirez, Matt Holliday, and Magglio Ordonez.  Jim Salisbury also notes that the Phillies have long liked Rocco Baldelli.  They’ve also been linked to Garrett Atkins.
  • Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard are in for large raises through arbitration; Amaro may attempt to sign them long-term.
  • Salisbury sees free agent lefties Jamie Moyer and Scott Eyre re-signing.  Scott Lauber suggests the Phils don’t want to go beyond one year for Moyer, though.
  • The team had a $104MM payroll in ’08, and that is expected to increase.
  • The Phillies (along with the Tigers and Nationals) have interest in free agent utility man Pete Orr.

Yankees Rumors: Teixeira, Manny, Mussina

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 1, 2008 at 11:18am CDT

According to Newsday’s Ken Davidoff, a Yankees insider thinks that Manny Ramirez is more likely than Mark Teixeira to sign with the club. Hank Steinbrenner and the Yankees haven’t ruled Manny out of their plans, but that doesn’t mean they’re likely to sign either Manny or Teixeira. The Yankees’ priority is starting pitching this offseason.

Davidoff wrote Thursday that “it would be a shocker” to see the Yankees offer Teixeira a contract of 10 years and $200MM.  Last year, Tex turned down an eight-year offer from the Rangers worth around $140MM.

According to Peter Abraham, Mike Mussina’s agent, Arn Tellem, arrived in Pennsylvania to talk with Mussina about his future. Abraham speculates that Mussina will announce his retirement "sometime soon." In September, Mussina said if he comes back he would play three more years to try and reach 300 wins.

Hank: Yanks Will Consider Manny

By Tim Dierkes | October 31, 2008 at 5:43pm CDT

The AP talked to Hank Steinbrenner today, who said the Yankees are looking at everything and will consider Manny Ramirez.  It’s not much of a story, as Ramirez is a questionable fit for the Yankees and their priority is starting pitching.  Plus, Hank said it.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Ordonez, Yankees, Red Sox

By Cork Gaines | October 31, 2008 at 11:31am CDT

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere…

  • MetsBlog says Magglio Ordonez may not be the best option but could be a good backup plan should other scenarios not play out (ie. Manny Ramirez).
  • Talking Chop thinks Ordonez is a good fit for the Braves noting that the team has significant money to spend this offseason.
  • River Ave. Blues is not excited about the possibility of Ordonez in the Yankees’ outfield, noting that it makes more sense to re-sign Bobby Abreu for less money.
  • Was Watching wonders if the Yankees would have to sign C.C. Sabathia in order to trade for Matt Holliday.  They feel it would be strange for the Yankees to go after Holliday one year after bowing out of the Johan Santana sweepstakes.
  • Over The Monster takes a look at whether the Red Sox should re-sign Jason Varitek and what other options are available.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Dodgers Rumors: Manny, Furcal, Peavy

By Tim Dierkes | October 30, 2008 at 9:36am CDT

Dodgers GM Ned Colletti talked to the media yesterday; here’s the latest.

  • Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News believes Colletti will pursue a competent backup catcher to allow more rest for Russell Martin.  A decision is due on Gary Bennett’s $900K option within seven days.
  • So far this offseason, Colletti and Scott Boras have exchanged two voicemails.  They’ll meet in person to discuss Manny Ramirez and other Boras clients (Derek Lowe, Greg Maddux, Andruw Jones, maybe Joe Crede) at next week’s GM meetings.  Colletti will not put the other team needs on hold to deal with Manny.
  • Colletti has had preliminary talks with the agents for Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, and Nomar Garciaparra, while Jeff Kent is expected to retire.
  • Colletti intends to acquire a top of the line starting pitcher, but Jake Peavy is unlikely (the Dodgers would have to pay extra due to the same-division factor).  Free agents Lowe and C.C. Sabathia may be considered.  The Dodgers have seven days to decide on Brad Penny’s $9.25MM option versus the $2MM buyout.
  • The Dodgers would love to have Takashi Saito back, but the situation with his elbow injury is unclear.
  • Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones have expressed a desire to be traded through the media, but not formally to the Dodgers.

Will Yankees Consider Manny?

By Tim Dierkes | October 30, 2008 at 9:09am CDT

From George King and Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post:

Several industry sources believe the Yankees will make a serious push for Manny Ramirez to play right field next year.

Those sources sound pretty vague, and keep in mind that Dodgers GM Ned Colletti called a previous King/Hubbuch report about a Manny offer "fiction."  On the other hand, Colletti said Saturday that the Dodgers hadn’t even had internal conversations about the length or amount of a possible Manny offer.  That seems like an odd topic to avoid for ten days.

Additionally, the Yankees have three corner outfielders and the idea of Manny in right field is dubious.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Sabathia, Teixeira, Peavy

By Tim Dierkes | October 30, 2008 at 9:00am CDT

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports posted a new column yesterday; let’s take a look.

  • Rosenthal says the "expectation in some baseball circles" is that the Brewers will offer a four-year, $100MM contract to C.C. Sabathia.  However, between the Yankees, Angels, and Dodgers he could probably do significantly better.
  • Mark Teixeira should draw interest from the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels.  Rosenthal adds that Mike Lowell does not have a no-trade clause (I believe I wrote earlier that he did).
  • The Padres and Braves are at an impasse in the Jake Peavy talks, with the Padres seeking five players.  The Braves don’t want to surrender Tommy Hanson, as Tom Krasovic reported Saturday.
  • Scott Boras is reportedly pitching Jason Varitek as the Tigers’ next catcher.
  • Rosenthal suggests that Manny Ramirez’s defense may keep NL teams away.

Orioles May Explore Free Agent Market

By Tim Dierkes | October 28, 2008 at 11:43am CDT

Steve Melewski of MASN Online recently spoke to Orioles president Andy MacPhail about the possibility of spending money in free agency.  MacPhail is open to a possible big dollar contract, but he leans toward youth:

Whatever the player and the investment, they have to fit into the strategy of what it is we are trying to achieve as an organization. The likelihood of us signing someone who is 35 is not great. If they are younger and can be helpful to us and their career will be longer with us that just a short-term fix, that’s a whole different story.

MacPhail said he wouldn’t rule out any player, but it’s fair to dismiss the recent Manny Ramirez rumor.  The Orioles may look to sign Mark Teixeira or A.J. Burnett, who both have local ties.  Tex will be 29 in April, and Burnett will be 32 in January.
